MP3 blog 2010/03/30

blog 2010/03/30 - everything glitters if you breathe too hard.

Wow, such restraint! I actually waited 6 days since the last update!  OK, the travel and performances had something to do with that, but on the other hand, I'm slacking...

A Weather - No Big Hope
A Weather - Third Of Life:  Don't mind the awkward grammar of the band title, the new album "Everyday Balloons" is a great little entry in to the whisper-core rennaissance.  The album plays like a cross between The XX and Great Lake Swimmers, which the structure and harmonies of The XX, but with the subtlety and tenders of GLS.  Especially with songs like "Third Of Life", they build slow and pleasantly, but halfway through there is immense payoff.

Balkan Beat Box - Adir Adirim ft Victoria Hanna (Nickodemus Remix):  This comes courtesy of the Turntables On The Hudson 10 Year Anniversary collection, a brilliant little swathe of breakbeat descrutction.  I'll post more from it later, but holy shit, I can't sit on this track any longer.

Bon Iver - Woods (Starkey Remix):  Oh yes.  Oh yes yes yes.  Yes please!  This was a very good idea.  A very very good idea indeed.

Broken Social Scene - All to All:  More new Broken Social Scene leaked!  Some of it is meh, but I do love this track.

CocoRosie - Lemonade
CocoRosie - R.I.P. Burn Face
CocoRosie - The Moon Asked the Crow:  OK, I don't think this is actually coming out until May, but here's a sneak peak.  I have an intense love-hate relatinoship with CocoRosie, since the stuff I love of theirs I LOVE SO DAMN MUCH I WANT TO SQUISH IT BETWEEN MY BOOBS.  And then stuff I don't love, I just kind of wish it evaporated away.  "Grey Oceans" is the new album, so keep an eye out for it this spring.

Fagget Fairys - Oci:  Another one of these electic electronic pop bands that produces an album that goes entirely under the radar, but the remixes go wild online.  Well the full length Feed the Horse is prett frickin' cool, if you're down with fun eclectic pop albums, ala Chemical Brothers or Peaches or Basement Jaxx, etc.  This track here?  Who can resist that horn+bass beat?

Four Tet - Love Cry (Joy Orbison Remix):  Joy Orbison, chilled stepmaster extraordinaire, extracts the finest moments from Four Tet's epic single and works it down to a much more bite-size nugget of rolling dubstep goodness.

Fuqugi - Alleyway
Fuqugi - Nightingale:  For this, I just have to let the bio speak for itself:  "Fuqugi is a solo project by Daiki Sakae residing in the wilderness of far south of Japan, Kagoshima. The surrounding nature brought significant inspirations to create these 15 imaginative tracks on his 1st official album "Gransofa + Nightingale"."    If the idea of gentle guitar improv in the Japanese wilderness just makes your mouth water, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Lily Allen - The Fear (Doctor Rosen Remix):  This is pretty frickin' fantastic and surprising.  Instead of just slamming on a house beat, they instead add piano and strings.  Very cool.

Malente - I Like It (Riva Starr SNATCH! Mix):  ...and to make up for the face-smashing bass above, we have a track of NOTHING BUT disco bass.

Mexican Institute of Sound - Cumbia (Deathface Remix):  Cumbia goes dubsteppy?  Niiiiiice.

Sufjan Stevens - Chicago (Live at KCRW):  And we close things off with a bit of Sufjan magic, recorded live on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic 7/14/05.

Yael Naim - Toxic (Dubstep Remix):  From a bootleg 12" in 2008, Spears suddenly sounds good!  Downright sexxay.

MP3 blog 2010/03/24

blog 2010/03/24 - so long, suckas!

ZOOOM, I'm outta here! Off to Toronto, and I won't be back until Monday! ha ha, take THAT, Internet!
But I am not entirely callous, no. Here is one final offering, and may we meet again in that fabled realm... of next week.

Animal Collective - Daily Routine (Phaseone Remix): Phaseone's album White Collar Crime is a delight. Some of the ways he flips tracks is just so perfectly spiced and diced. His production is deep, but comes off as a less-harsh El-P behind the keys. This track is a gem amongst riches, providing the perfect bass pulse that Animal Collective now know they need.

B. Rich - We Ball Harder (DZ's Spy Harder Remix): Local boy does right. Now the hottest producer to emerge from Ottawa, he just keeps putting out the dubstep goodness. And really, B. Rich isn't exactly a producer that ever needs any help, so DZ really brings his A game to this one. I'm kind of sick of the pulsing+slamming dubstep as of late, so it's great to get back to the 70 bpm framework and re-engage the essentials of what makes a stepper break good.

Balmorhea - Bowsprit: A slow building instrumental from the 2009 album "Constellations".

Bent - Always: Bent have always kind of been on the periphery of the electronica bins, and occassionally produce some stupendously happy fun stuff. I had missed this first time around, but this fabulous track is taken from the Best Of Bent compilation, released 2009. For fans of Hint, Blockhead, Husky Rescue, Mowgli, etc.

Bibio - Jealous Of Roses (Pivot Remix): This is from the Warp: 2010 label sampler, which reveals a few exciting things for the hallowed label, and a few mis-starts too. I've been pretty hyper-critical of Bibio before, but I hope this remix is pointing to something a bit more exciting than their sophomore slump. This is organic-feeling downtempo pop the way I like it.

Broken Social Scene - World Sick: New BSS for 2010! The album is Forgiveness Rock Record. Yes, I'm excited. Please don't suck. Oh please oh please oh please.

Fanfarlo - Ghosts: Another fabulous track from their album Reservoir, stealing poppy bits of from Arcade Fire and oh who the fuck cares? It's a great song.

Felt - Ghost Dance Deluxe
Felt - Give It Up: Third time's a charm? No one really expected much from "Felt 3: A Tribute To Rosie Perez" but well, here it is, and there's some great stuff on it. Probably my favourite appearance from Slug in a while, but maybe it's just the lifted Human Beat Box sample tugging at my heart strings... But maybe I find love songs to ghost women kinda sexy.

Lemonade - Lifted: Wind up sounds? Check. "squick" sound? check. Child laughter? check. Wobble bass? check. Most adorable pop song of 2010? Right here, from the new Pure Moods EP.

Mumford And Sons - Little Lion Man: A great little bar-room folk stomper.

Ola Podrida - Dnkey
Ola Podrida - We All Radiant: Their 2009 album "Belly of the Lion" is subtle. So subtle I almost passed over it, even after a few listens. But it slowly sinks in to you. This is more reserved folk rock, focusing more on the standard structures instead of reinventing itself and trying to be overly clever. Highly recommended for fans of Iron & Wine, Bonny Prince Billy and Califone.

Thao with the Get Down Stay Down - Goodbye Good Luck: I've posted a bunch of Thao before, but oh Know Better Learn Faster is SUCH a grand album, and this song has just been ping-ponging in my head all day.

The Bird and the Bee - I Can't Go For That (Hall & Oates cover)
The Bird and the Bee - One On One (Hall & Oates cover): "Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall and John Oates" is a the most explicit title possible for this project. Did you just wet yourself or cringe? If it was the latter, just skip this. If it was the former, you're in luck! An entire album of Hall & Oates classics covered by the sultry The Bird And The Bee. Listening to it all, you truly realize that behind the mustaches, there was some truly powerful pop punch.

Themselves & Why - Canada: It starts slow, builds slow, the lyrics kind flowing out in a stagnant nursery-rhyme delivery. But it's building. The xylophone catches you a tad off guard. But by the time the chorus hits, it's all over and you're sucked in to a song that 60 seconds ago you were sure you were going to hate. Good job, hypothetical you.

Todd Edwards - Never Far From You: It's always good luck when we end on a bouncey note! I love some chopped vox, and oh those steppy garage snares delight. This should dance you through the weekend. Until next time.

Kazuo Ishiguro - When We Were Orphans (audiobook)

Kazuo Ishiguro - When We Were Orphans (audiobook)

When 9-year-old Christopher Banks's father--a British businessman involved in the opium trade--disappears from the family home in Shanghai, the boy and his friend Akira play at being detectives: "Until in the end, after the chases, fist-fights and gun-battles around the warren-like alleys of the Chinese districts, whatever our variations and elaborations, our narratives would always conclude with a magnificent ceremony held in Jessfield Park, a ceremony that would see us, one after another, step out onto a specially erected stage ... to greet the vast cheering crowds." But Christopher's mother also disappears, and he is sent to live in England, where he grows up in the years between the world wars to become, he claims, a famous detective. His family's fate continues to haunt him, however, and he sifts through his memories to try to make sense of his loss. Finally, in the late 1930s, he returns to Shanghai to solve the most important case of his life. But as Christopher pursues his investigation, the boundaries between fact and fantasy begin to evaporate. Is the Japanese soldier he meets really Akira? Are his parents really being held in a house in the Chinese district? And who is Mr. Grayson, the British official who seems to be planning an important celebration? "My first question, sir, before anything else, is if you're happy with the choice of Jessfield Park for the ceremony? We will, you see, require substantial space."

In When We Were Orphans Kazuo Ishiguro uses the conventions of crime fiction to create a moving portrait of a troubled mind, and of a man who cannot escape the long shadows cast by childhood trauma. Sherlock Holmes needed only fragments--a muddy shoe, cigarette ash on a sleeve--to make his deductions, but all Christopher has are fading recollections of long-ago events, and for him the truth is much harder to grasp. Ishiguro writes in the first person, but from the beginning there are cracks in Christopher's carefully restrained prose, suggestions that his version of the world may not be the most reliable. Faced with such a narrator, the reader is forced to become a detective too, chasing crumbs of truth through the labyrinth of Christopher's memory.

Ishiguro has never been one for verbal pyrotechnics, but the unruffled surface of this haunting novel only adds to its emotional power. When We Were Orphans is an extraordinary feat of sustained, perfectly controlled imagination, and in Christopher Banks the author has created one of his most memorable characters. --Simon Leake

DNA & RNA - Deciphering The Code Of Life (1974)

This will be the first post in a series for Grey Calx, writer of the fabulous blogs A Basement of Curiousities and A Closet of Curiousities.
The latter blog specializing in more experimental, rare world music, and contemporary classical.  The former specializing in obscure spoken word, sound recordings, and wacky puzzling detrius from the vinyl heydays.

I have been asked to post some of my offerings, and when someone who has posted up as much amazing stuff as this person asks, you are honored to oblige!

First up:
DNA & RNA - Deciphering The Code Of Life

This album is from a 1974 lecture series that is to accompany a slide show.  This is good for sciencey samples, or for people interested in what science was like 36 years ago.
This is disc 2 from the series.  Sorry, I don't have the others.

Same program on side A and B, except side A has beeps for when to change slides.  Both are included.
320 kbps vinyl rips, done by CPI.

Enjoy!  More coming soon.

MP3 blog 2010/03/21

blog 2010/03/21 - Let's just pop another one off for the weekend.

Man, I hate it when in my head I'm all "I'm just going to go bang on his door", but in real life my lips say "I'm going to go bang him".  Happens.
All.  The.  Time.
Embarassing, really.

There's a serious disconnect between the speed my thoughts go at and the speed they are released by my mouth.  A bottleneck occurs and certain words and concepts spill over and end up in my bra, the verbalised words often only approximating what I had hoped.

It's the same thing with this blog!  I don't know if you noticed, but I stopped spellchecking and previewing what I was writing in here.  Errors abound!  But fuckit, that's not what this is all about.
It's all about celebrating the fact that there is always always always tonnes of awesome new music for you to explore.

THE FUTURE IS EXCITING!  LET'S EXPLORE!

Arms - Tiger Tamer:  I kind of love the disaffected delivery of the vocalist here.  As soon as you think he's going atonal, he does a melodic swoop, and then plants firmly back into the smirky atonal goodness.

Die Antwoord - Enter The Ninja
Die Antwoord - Wat Pomp ft Jack Parow:  While totally self-aware hipster constructions, Die Antwoord do deliver so hot goods.  It's been said before, but the internet does offer this brand of false identities mutating pop culture structures, but no one really cares when it's done with such skill.  The new album is $O$ and there are some definite hot tracks off there.  And the videos are a must-see.  It's like Snow meets Fagget Fairies.

DJ Mujava - Mugwanti & Sgwejegweje (Schlachthofbronx Remix):  Finally a worthwhile followup to the madness of Township Funk!  South African funky bass goodness.

Emeralds - Alive In The Sea Of Information:  Every once in a while something bubbles up from the no-fi cassette culture underground and breaks through to the more popular consciousness, and The Emeralds' 2009 album What Happened seems to be there.  Glistening psych textures evolve along, never resting in one spot for more than 60 seconds.

Frightened Rabbit - Living In Colour
Frightened Rabbit - Swim Until You Can't See Land
Frightened Rabbit - The Wrestle:   EEEEEEE!!!!! New Frightened Rabbit!  So exciting.  The Winter Of Mixed Drinks is here in 2010 and follows their development beautifully.  Taking their folk roots, upping the rock-out quotient, and even sliding in to some Twilight Sad-esque post rockisms, this album just gels perfectly and delights.  Highly recommended.

Kammerflimmer Kollektief - Blind
Kammerflimmer Kollektief - In Translation (Version):  You know what you don't hear on these tracks?  Vocals.  I just couldn't get in to the vocals on their new albu, "Wildling".  I've been following this band since their '96 single on Payola, and it has always been the arrangements that drew me to them.  These tracks, especially the enchanting In Translation (Version), will keep me checking out anything new they work on.

Miles Bonny - Nothin' But Chu:  A quick slice of downtempo soul...

Mr. Gnome - Slow Side:  Joanna Newsom meets Courtney Love!  Who knew?

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Hanuman:  From the 2009 album "11:11", this guy just melts my face off.  Absolutely beautiful/incredible guitar work here.  And it's STILL a great song, not just some guitar wankery.

The Tallest Man on Earth - A Lion's Heart
The Tallest Man on Earth - King Of Spain:  Long anticipated and finally here, The Wild Hunt is thew new album.  This guy inerhits the Bob Dylan spirit and pays it forward.  Now, this album hasn't caught me as powerfully as Shallow Graves did, there are still some shining lights on it.  And I fully respect this guy enough to give it repeated listens and allows the rest to grow on me.  Recommended for all folk and Dylan fans.

The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition (Alan Wilkis Remix):  I love how this vocalist sounds almost like he's straight out of the 80s.  I could imagine a chorus like this coming from Human League or Men At Work, and I mean that as an enthusiastic compliment!  The core is a perfect little pop song.  The remix just chunks it up for the dance floor, the way it should be.

tUnE-YaRdS
- Youth:  And this little treat comes from the Real Live Flesh EP.  All hail bedroom recording geniuses!  See?  What did I tell you?  The future is good.

MP3 blog 2010/03/16

blog 2010/03/16 - oh right, there's your monkey.

Well hello hello!  You just can't stop the music.  Oh that's right, she stole that line from me.

Bonobo - Animals
Bonobo ft Andreya Triana - Eyesdown:  Hold on to your tush and whip out that "BEST OF 2010" list.  It's time to insert a new entry in the top 10 contenders!  Bonobo is back with Black Sands, and it absolutely fricking incredible.   Absolutely essential.  Downtempo, jazz, dubstep, jazz vocalist, atmospheric, and just gorgeous.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  This album is pure gold, non-stop.

Cardopusher - Travestieten Transsexuelen Over The Rainbow:  Cardopusher has consistently made the funnest and innovative beats, and his sexy Unity Means Power album ressurrects the glee that only early ADDICT 12"s could elicit in the 90s.  Like how ADDICT gave fun and sneers at DHR's cold sneering seriousness, Carodpusher mashes shit up in the rather chilly dubstep and junglist scene.  If you were ever a breakcore fan, you need this album.

Clorinde - Cecile And The Knights:  another great track from 2009's The Creative Listener.   Just cuz.

High Places - On a Hill in a Bed on a Road in a House:  The new album "High Places vs. Mankind" is getting some decent reviews in many disparate places, but it certainly didn't blow me away.  Their composition is tightened up, at the expense of the ethereal charm that really was the main attraction for me on the earlier stuff.  But I do love this song.

Lightning Dust - I Knew:  Super fun rock-pop, from the 2009 album Infinite Light.

Mamadou Diabate - Bolomabory
Mamadou Diabate - Douga Mansa:  Prepare to have your face melted off with Douga Mansa.  I pretty much will check out any peformer whose name ends in Diabate or Toure, and I have not been dissapointed yet.  WHAT AMAZING FAMILIES.

Moonface - Marimba and Shit-Drums:  Like, what am I supposed to say with a title like that?  It's perfect.  just perfect.

Motohiro Nakashima - A Few Minutes Before The Dawn:  Gentle piano and strings and guitar and horn.  This is a pretty good snapshot of the beautiful album "We Hum On The Way Home".  Recommended for fans of gorgeous gentle ambience.

Myd - Train to Bamako:  Oh you know me, I just love house tracks with chanting.

Parker - Where's My Monkey:  THE ULTIMATE DUBSTEP PARODY TRACK!  A pitch perfect hilarious reinterpretation of TC's Where's My Money.  Wierd Al Yankovic can sleep easy knowing that kids like this are out there.

Scott Matthew - Community
Scott Matthew - Ornament:  I first got in to Scott Matthew after his beautiful appearance in the film Shortbus.  His new album "There Is An Ocean That Divides" will tend to divide more audiences than oceans.  Like Chris Garneau, Damien Rice and Patrick Watson, Scott has an incredibly emotional and deeply wrought style.  This will either set you off or enchant you, depending on how much romanticism you can handle.  For me, I just love the gushy romance.

The Incredible Funk League - On & On ft Sadat X:  A funky little number with some short and sweet verses from Sadat X.

The Twilight Sad - The Room:  NEW TWILIGHT SAD FOR 2010!   I haven't heard the full length yet, but this is the first single off the LP.  It is not a radical departure, but still a pleasurable refinement of their craft and oh so good!

Trickform - Grain Plek:  Wow, it's been a while since I posted some straight-ahead IDM fare!  From Trickform's self-titled album in 2009, this track brings me back to all that late-90s Funkstorung joy.  So so so happy here.

Young Jeezy - I Got This (El-P Remix):  Close things down with this surprising remix!  It even ressurects El-P's "WHAT?" sample, last heard on Viagra with DJ Vadim 12 years back.  Pretty frickin' awesome.  FRICKIN!!!!

MP3 blog 2010/03/11

blog 2010/03/11 - Where were you on this fateful day, happening at this very moment?

Enough breathing time?  Yes?  No?  who cares!

23 Deluxe - Show Me Happiness (Radio Edit):  Want happiness?  Here is happiness!  Super pop garage fun 10000!  Love it.

Ben Frost - Leo Needs A New Pair Of Shoes
Ben Frost - Peter Venkman Part II:  The Ben Frost album is a delight and a must-have for any fans of cinematic sound-art works.  For fans of the narrative textures of Peter Rehberg, O.S.T., Terre Thaemlitz, some of Mika Vainio's collaborative efforts, and even reaching in to the fan-base of the Supersilent collabs.
Fabulous stuff.  And bonus points for the nerdiest of nerdy track titles.

Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore - Mitleid Lady:  from the Mitleid Lady EP, here comes another slow slab of dark jazz bliss.  There have been so many fucking imitators coming out of the sludge/doom metal scene that have tried to bite their style, but no one comes close to the sinister and sexy majesty of Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore.

Fang Island - Careful Crossers
Fang Island - Sideswiper:  Fang Island rule!  The album is short and sweet and a pitch perfect rock-gasm.  Sounding a bit like Holy Fuck, but with the fun of Man Or Asttroman tossed in to the instrumental rock.
But it's not all instrumental, with some dashes of heartfelt off-key vocals that make me reminisce about Cap'N'Jazz and that early 90s emo where screaming meant you were fucking happy and delighted and not entirely sad, but inspired to take on this big ole world of adversity.  Oh emo, what happened to you?  Fang Island will share their popsicle with you.

Lil Wayne - Kobe Bryant:  Probably the best explicity sports-theme song I've heard in a long time, maybe since The Sporting Life or the remixes of the Rocky Theme.

Mathhead - Terror Inc:  I have a softspot for this kind of sci-fi cheese dubstep.  I mean really, not since breakcore has there been such a perfect genre to bust out the badass movie samples and get all creepy-synth and smash-bassey on the populace.  Hey dubstep producers:  More songs with DOOM samples, please?

MJ Cole - Sincere (Nero Remix):  2 of my favourite producers are on the track!  Caitlyn is pleased.  Carry on with your day.

Mochipet - Spring ft Daedelus:  A highlight from Mochipet's Bunnies & Muffins album!  I can't really get in to the unfocussed noodling of Mochipet, but when you toss in Daedelus, who is PROFESSIONALLY UNFOCUSED, it all comes out on the other side 1 shade of perfect.

Natalia Lafourcade - Ella Es Bonita
Natalia Lafourcade - Hu Hu Hu:  After raving about the single Azul I posted in update blog20090928, I went and checked out the 2009 full length Hu Hu Hu.  I am happy to report there are at least 6 quite amazing songs on it, and you should check it out if you like these singles, Emilianna Torrini, and the like.

Pete Rock and CL Smooth - Straighten It Out (Remix):  Every once in a while I just like to toss in something older that I have been listening to.  This remix is from the Straighten It Out single, circa 1995.

Regina Spektor - Us:  I made no bones about my disatisfaction with Spektor's more recent works, but this track, taken from the (500) Days Of Summer soundtrack, finally strikes me in a good way.

Storsveit Nix Noltes - Nevestinko Horo
Storsveit Nix Noltes - Pajdusko:  What better way to end things than with 2009's Royal Family-Divorce LP?  Progressive klezmer jack rock for everyone!  So good.

MP3 blog 2010/03/08

blog 2010/03/08 - sweep the porch and chill the bubbley, spring is a-comin'

Alice Russell - Let Us Be Loving (Kidkanevil Remix):  Last years Pot Of Gold Remixes remixes album had some definite flavour, but like most similar remix comps, it got a bit bogged down in its own thoroughness.  Still, if you can go in there with a DJ's ear for pruning, there are tonnes of fantastic junky soul jams to be had.

Andrew Thomas - A Dream Of A Spider
Andrew Thomas - One Thousand Pinholes In A Black Paper Sky:  New Andrew Thomas album!  "Between Buildings & Trees" doesn't offer up much new if you are a veteran of the Kompakt Pop Ambient world, but if you have been hanging out with this crew for 10 years, new isn't what you want.  What you want is gentle waves of sound, lush pads, and the perfect soundtrack for your prescription meds come-down.

Annabel - People And Places:  Total poppy driving rock fun!

Anti-Pop Consortium - Volcano (Four Tet Remix):  Four Tet kicks it up with a fabulous remix of the hottest track the Anti-Pop crew has dropped in years.  Flavour!

Arve Henriksen - Children In My Garden:  From the 2001 album "Sakuteiki", this is an engrossing solo performance.  A mic so close you can hear the salive along the mouthpiece.

Asobi Seksu - Walk On The Moon:   This one starts of small and simple, but woah, it just catches you.  The female vocals drive the whole thing, guitar swells be damned.  More pop than post-rock, I like.

Cat Power - Dreams (Fleetwood Mac cover):  A fabulous rendition of this rock classic.

Colin Meloy - Cupid (Sam Cook cover):  Another cover, going even further back!  Meloy, of The Decemberists, puts a good spin on this bubblegum classic.

Dana Falconberry - The Possum Song (live on MOKB radio):  Some sweet and classic folk, akin to The Be Good Tanyas/

Dead Confederate
- Start Me Laughing:  Umm what?   This guy totally sounds like Kurt Cobain.  After 15 years where no one sounded like Kurt Cobain and no one was allowed to sound like Kurt Cobain...  Here comes this guy.  And it kind of rocks.

Dub Fiend - Tetris Dubstep Remix:  And the torch is passed.   Not 3 years go by when the kids of the day reinterpret the Tetris theme with the popular genre of the day.  Once it was Breakbeat, once Happy Hardcore, once hard house, once techno....  NOW DUBSTEP CARRIES ON THE GRAND TRADITION!   But things are breaking the mold here.  I distinctly detect some Super Mario Bros 3, Pac Man, a vocal clip from Mario 64, and Street Fighter 2.  Not sure where the "Come on!" sample is from, though.  I guess you have to branch out a bit to keep things intersting over full duration.

Edu K - Jumpin n Pumpin:  Finally, we get back to some club ish!

El Guincho - Kalise (Round Table Knights Remix):  Love the chants, love the bass!  Round Table Knights do up a solid remix with just some simple bouncing bass.

John Zorn - Uzziel:  Get this:  This is from the the 13th entry in Zorn's 2nd book of Masada tunes.  The first Book Of Masada was 10 discs of jazz quartet bliss.  Volume 2, The Book Of Angels, is now at 13 and I don't know where it ends.  Titled "Mycale", this edition is fucking fantastic.  The entire record is a quartet of women singing acapella, and it is incredibley good.  Highly recommended.

Land of Talk - Sixteen Asterisk:  Land of Talk, oh how I'd missed you!  Hi, how are you doing?  Grab a chair, the tea is almost ready.

Lhasa De Sela - Fool's Gold:  This reminds me of Anne Murray.  YES, IN A GOOD WAY.  SHEESH, you people...

Mike Snow - Animal (Mark Ronson Remix):  Now this is good.  In the age of endless remixes, Mark Ronson takes the fabulous song by Mike Snow and redoes it completely, rendering it a dubby chiller.  Wonderful.

Oh No - Concentrate
Oh No - Fuego Tribe:   We close things off with 2 hot beats from Dr. No's Ethiopium.  Fans of Flying Lotus and Beans should already know this.  See you next week, kiddies!

MP3 blog 2010/03/02

blog 2010/03/02 - the only thing better than sleep is you.

Another super-quick update of hotness for you all.  Mind my brevity, but rest assured that this is a golden bundle for good.

13th Floor Elevators - Your Gonna Miss You (Blastto Edit):  Great guitar rock sound, with a well placed beat on top.  Super useful, super fun.  But you might want to just skip the final minute.

Aischa & Coultrain - Edge Of:  Some smooth sexy downtempo soul.  Total lovers groove.

Alcoholic Faith Mission - We All Have Our Shortcomings:  So like what's this?  an AA meeting?

Atami - Nightingale (Yamantaka Eye X-mas Mix):  Plucked from 2008's "Re... Remix?" collection, psychedelic frontman from the Boredoms delivers some incredible jams on that LP.  Here is one more accessible, kinda like AGF, but holy shit what a glorious bucket of wow this album is.  Highly recommended for fans of leftfield electronics and psych.

Broken Bells - The High Road:  brand new for 2010, just some fabulous radio-friendly singalong pop.

Bullion - Say Goodbye To What:  Uhhh what?  What's up there cute fairy princess from the 60s.  This is like Tranquility Bass for the next decade.  Awesome.

Damian Marley - Welcome to Jamrock (Savoy Remix):  Awwww shiiiiit!  This is such a perfect little track.  It even builds on it's goodness for 3 minutes, and blows you away dropping the Damien Marley vox.   So slamming.

Efterklang - Modern Drift:  The new 2010 album is "Magic Chairs", and while it's not everything you really wanted it to be, this track is aces.  Efterklang's debut LP seems like it will never be matched, let alone surpassed.  If only this track was 45 minutes long.

Emily Wells - Juicy:  Dope tribute-to-Cocorosie vocals and good beat.  If you can get over the magazine article about Cocorosie crew hanging out at underground hiphop parties for middleclass white kids, it's an enjoyable track.

Get Busy Committee - Chillin Out Maxin:  FUCKING FRESH PRINCE OF BELAIR!

Immuzikation - Sleepydream:  More great beat jacking, this time flipping the oft-remixed Sleepy Head by Passion Pit and dropping rhymes on top.  Ever since Kanye did Stronger, MCs have been ripping indie beats like crazy.  And it's not a bad thing.

Skyence - Precious Time:  Always always always need the sexy liquid stepper action!

Skyzoo - Ghetto America (Astronote Remix):  I guess hiphop is the predominate genre of this here update, so here's another solid track.

Sneaky - Beduija:  The solid beats just keep a-comin'!

South Rakkas Crew & Deerhoof - Choo Choo Beep (+81):  OK, it's all a bit absurd, but fuck it, it's still fun.  Leftfield indie rock crew Deerhoof hook up with cheeseball party monsters South Rakkas Crew?  OK, whatevs.  Next thing you know we'll have Yoshimi P-We jamming with Justin Timberlake.

Special Ed - Dreadlock (Soundphreakers Remix):  How long has it since we put up some new ragga jungle?  Probably too long.  Just to be safe, take upon this smoking Soundphreakers remix and offer forgiven upon me.

The Field - Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime:  The Field are awesome, but suffer from critical overhyping ala Pitchfork.  Fuck it, people, they're OK, but not the Gods of minimal techno.  Yeesh.  Anyways, I have a softspot for the original (?) Beck version of this song, so had to pass this slowtempo slumper along.  And yes, Yesterday And Today is a fabulous album for all minimal techno heads, very much recommended, but best of the year?  nuh uh.

Zero 7 ft Mf Doom - Summersalt:  Zero 7 have always underwhelmed me on the downtempo side, but here they get it right with some soul and smash, and then get MF doom of all cats to come in and drop some bliss.  A perfect way to send off this update.
