MP3 blog 2014/04/29

blog 2014/04/29 - Float yourself away

Anchors up:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140429.zip

Aphex Twin - Lichen (Reworked by Wisp):  These Wisp remixes don't offer much new, but sometimes there is good to be had in simplifying things and getting everything smoothed out to a level that makes it that much more accessible for the DJs.

Deadbeat - Melbourne Round Midnight
Deadbeat - Where Has My Love Gone:  I was digging back to 2007's Journeyman's Annual and these dub tech tracks were highlights for me, but really the whole album is pretty darn great.

Drake ft James Fauntleroy - Girls Love Beyonce (YOGI Refix):  Great deep bass breakage.

Elbow - Charge
Elbow - Real Life (Angel)
Elbow - The Take Off And Landing Of Everything:  Everyone gots your Best Of 2014 lists ready to start drafting?  Holy hell, The Take Off And Landing Of Everything is a top contender already.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  GET IT NOW.

Four Tet - As Serious As Your Life (Jay Dee Remix):  And the award for the goofiest of Four Tet remixes ever goes to…

Franz Ferdinand - Ulysses (Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve Re-animation):  Ahem, I meant to say, the award for the goofiest remix ever goes to…

Gold Panda - Mountain:  Singe from 2012, don't forget this was before trap was like totally over.

Slow Machete - Evening Dust Choir
Slow Machete - Santiago:  Evening Dust Choir is an album that evokes so much in me.  It would be a powerful statement if it was just an instrumental record, but my godthe smooth and smokey and soulful vocals give you shivers in all the right places.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Spider Bags - Keys to the City
Spider Bags - Shape I Was In:  Shake My Head has a numbers of touchstones.  Rancid circa 1991.  Psychobilly.  Barroom indie grunge.  OK so while I connect this to the 90s mostly, it totally sounds like a modern album, just wearing it's fabulous influences on its jacket vest.

The Mouthbreathers - Quicksand:  If I don't include something I can proudly describe as dorky in my updates, I feel a bit of shame.

Thief - Closer (Weird Together Remix):  A great pop song needs a great plod, and so let's plod onward!

Trésors - White Beast (Lonely Walk Remix):  Some times your pop remixes take a dark edge and you think fuck it, rock over london.

MP3 blog 2014/04/23

blog 2014/04/23 - I'm never surprised when it ends this way

We're bored so we fall in to it again:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140423.zip

2NE1 - MTBD (CL Solo):  "Member" is the new chorus?  OK, whatevs.

Ages And Ages - Divisionary (Do The Right Thing):  I always need an melancholic edge to my sing-along songs.

Alex Coulton - Pointe Noire:  This is some perfectly stripped minimal ish, from the album War Games.

Alexander von Schlippenbach - Light Blue:  I have been grooving on this one all week.  A bit of a throwback, from the 1997 album Schlippenbach Plays Monk.

Denim Snakes - Party Hard:  More barrock singalong indeed!

Evil Analog - Sweet Poison ft Anna Krista:  I love this sexy little number, how it remains restrained without resorting to crazy drops, and knows it is perfect just the way it is.

FaltyDL - She Sleeps (Gang Gang Dance Remix):  This GGD version is even better than the original.  All gravy.

Hundred Waters - Boreal:
Hundred Waters - Down From the Rafters:  2 tracks here, one from the self-titled album, and one from Down From the Rafters, and both are great.

Laura Stevenson - L-Dopa:  Swooning on those horns, lifting up the epic folk to the heavens.

Luminox - Dynamite:  DY-NA-MITE!  BOOOOOOM

Nick Leng - Walking Home:  Beautiful little bit of electro pop bliss.

Pearls Negras - Pensando em Voce:  This shit is just banging.

Pheo - Real Old Cigar (Joe Kay's Slowed & Roll One Edit):  Lovin' that pitched down rap.

Phox - Espeon:  More glorious folk from the Confetti EP.

Suntrapp - New Morning:  A wonderful song from the album New Morning.

Sylvan Esso - Hey Mami:  Love the acapella folk intro and the perfect tinges of the deep bass.

Temples - A Question Isn't Answered:  Spacey and fuzzed out, the way mom used to make it.  From the new album Sun Structures.

The Lighthouse and The Whaler - Venice:  Close it on the cheery chirping chimes!

MP3 blog 2014/04/16

blog 2014/04/16 - I'm not fine but that's all right

For the love of Francis Bacon we will get to thee:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140416.zip

Alex Wiley - Vibration:  Has all of my favourite things about Chance on this flow, totally fabulous.

Daktyl - 244:  Love this stompy wonk bass.

DJ Chus - Vuela Paloma:  Ahhh every once in a while you need to indulge in some jazzy deep house.

E.E.K. - Live Jam at The Cairo High Cinema Institute:  OK I have no idea who these people are or what the setup is.  All I know is that this mp3 stumbled in to my computer one day and I've been ALL ABOUT this killer jam session.  And really, on a normal day the words  "jam session" is enough to provoke a mild gag reflex in the back of my throat, but holy hell this is strict tearing up of shit for 17 minutes solid.

Eliot Lipp - Yeah (Big Gigantic Remix):  I haven't been feeling much Lipp as of late, but this is some happy-infused West Coast breakbeat goodness.

Emika - 3 Hours:  Another totally killer track from Emika, the total queen of dark atmospherics.  I feel about this the same way about Ellen Allien's breakout album.  So hot.

Feel No Other - Winter Is All Over You (First-Aid Kit cover):  Sure I don't think this surpasses the original, the song has such depth that any new take on it is apprecaited.

Glass Animals - Psylla:  Is this some darkcore barroom dfimension or what?

Hurray For The Riff Raff - The Body Electric:  Unf!  A big blow of emotional goodness from the new album Small Town Heroes.

Jason Isbell - Cover Me Up:  There is a solemn heaviness on Southeastern, as Isbell emerges in to sobriety with new eyes and soulful humbleness.

Rokia Traoré - Ka Moun Kè
Rokia Traoré - Kouma:  The first half of Beautiful Africa is absolutely stunning.  I think it drags a bit, before the stellar closer, but if you like these grooves the album is totally worth checking out.

The Welcome Wagon - High
The Welcome Wagon - I'm Not Fine
The Welcome Wagon - My Best Days, Parts 1 & 2:  The other week I was all "time to go unironically listen to some Xtian folk music."  Seriously people, just because the guy is a minister is no reason to skip this gem.  Yes, it sounds similar to Sufjan Stevens and is out on his record label, but how many holy holy holy enunciations have you cried along on Stevens' records, and for some reason you're skipping this one just because it's a bit to Jesusy?  Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices comes highly recommended, even if you have to pretend it's another soft folk concept album from Steven's pre-overture catalogue.

Tinashe - Ecstasy (Remix) ft Chance the Rapper:  Total ecstatic smooth bass with some great RnB vocals and a dash of Chance to close it out perfectly.

MP3 blog 2014/04/08

blog 2014/04/08 - it's a process

and the result is you:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140408.zip

Carter Juncal - Tapes:  All that bliss-n-bass shit yesssss.

Conner Youngblood - Amelia:  Oh sing me off to sweet sweet rumptuous slumber!

Depone - Test Me:  Tear it up!  Tear up the classic sample junglist sample set and slam that shit up.

Disrupt - Hail The Robots:  Robobreakbeat is oh so delicious.

Emynd x Future - $hit (clean):  The breaks are hot, but aww man the vocal rambles make it perfect.

Fat Tony - Hood Party ft Kool A.D. & Despot:  I love the flows of Kool and Despot oh so frickin much.  They could be rhyming over a chime box for all I care.

Haerts - Wings:  This is the glorious redemption the 80s has been waiting for.

Hayley Reardon - Booze And Blueberries (For Betsy):  OK, this is some quiver-at-the-knees kind of stuff.,

Hominidae - Aloe:  Over the top snap bass production that just becomes a joy.

Jeremiah Jae - Survival ft Oliver the 2nd:  Loving this track.  Really understated beat that works really well and harkens back to the days of restraint.

Lists - Autumn:  Gorgeous energy that pulses somewhere between Bon Iver and Belle & Sebastien.

NO - Leave The Door Wide Open:  These guys are STILL NOT THE NATIONAL, and are still great.

Pharrell - Happy (Robots With Rayguns Remix):  Does what it says on the tin.

Phoenix - SOS In Bel Air (Ariel Pink's Krystal Bamboo Remix):  Not normally an AP fan, but oh the charm of this one!

Sean Dee - Bow and Arrows ft Anna Yvette:  It kind of gushes positivity, but I can still groove at it thanks to the flute trill.

Toronto Homicide Squad - Cold Eggs
Toronto Homicide Squad - Coyote Killer:  Oh god yes some great grind sludge out from the album Nein Bullets.

Washed Out - Don't Give Up:  Sweet post-Beck pop washes from the album Paracosm.

Wye Oak - Mary Is Mary:  New Wye Oak, The Knot!  More brooding!  More emotions!  MORE!

Yellow Ostrich - Neon Fists:  Oh and swoon Yellow Ostrich named their new album after my favourite place to be: Cosmos.

Y/2/K - Not Sad:  Close out on the smooth basslines that yes, are totally sad, and just not admitting to it.

MP3 blog 2014/04/01

blog 2014/04/01 - to hell with this noise

You have every reason to doubt me:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140401.zip

Boddika & Joy Orbison - Dun Dun:  unnnf great pounding minimal tech

Bombay Bicycle Club - Leave It (Acoustic):  Great little folk from the EP of the same name.

Bonobo - Brace Brace
Bonobo - Know You
Bonobo - The Keeper (Banks Remix):  You'd be right to be sceptical.  Remix albums are seldom a must-have, and are most often turid trudges through boilerplate reworks.  But Black Sands Remixed bucks that trend.  OK the remixes aren't ALL the best, but then there's the whole other disc of b-sides which are often as good or better than the main album's material!  Seriously, there are so many winners on here.  Recommended for anyone that loved Black Sands.

Burial - Stolen Dog:  Sometimes Burial's mellow stuff is just too boring for me, but the plods in this one have a certain tenderness I can't escape.

Cloud Nothings - I'm Not Part Of Me:  New Cloud Nothings!  Can't wait to hear all of Here And Nowhere Else.

Da Poet - Other Side ft Ince Sarj:  Like Toxic redux on the trap tip!

Ed Schrader's Music Beat - Pantomime Jack:  SCREAM SCREAM SCMEAM!

EMA - Satellites:  I am SO EXCITED for new EMA Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!  The Future's Void, out now!

Jeremih - F. U. All The Time ft Lil Wayne (Illo Remix):  Ottawa boys does right, does it again.

Mimicking Birds - Bloodlines:  Lush folk from the new album Eons

Mr. Gnome - The Way:  hnnngg 2014 is a great year so far, and some new Mr. Gnome as well?  I'm overjoyed to hear all of Softly Mad.

Museum of Love - Monotronic (Secret Circuit Remix):  Like a slightly more dour Owen Pallet, then wrapped in to the looper and ejected in to an epic pop plodder.  And all of the best.

Samaris - Goda Tungl:  This is sexy and smart and I'll all about it.

Schoolboy Q - Collard Greens ft Kendrick Lamar:  Anticipated collab from the new Oxymoron.

The Black Arrow - The Chase (Jimmy Pe remix):  Slickbass all over the slickplace.  The end.
