MP3 blog 2011/03/30

blog 2011/03/30 - omg how did I bruise the top of my feet?

Yes, I bruised the top of my feet.  OWIE.
That means it hurts to wear shoes...
oi.

Airbird - Part Of The Game:  Slurpy chillwave loves you sooooooooo mmmmmuuuuuuuccchhhhh  and wants to give you a bit wet sloppy kiss in slow motion!

Angel Stoxx - The Sound of My Voice:  Yesssss my favourite clicky minimal sexiness!

Baby Dee - Yapapipi:  Always seemingly two bars away from becoming a MASSIVE power ballad, this Vangelis-inspired piano number from the album "Regifted Light" would fit perfectly over a montage of two lovers in separate cities making themselves tea and staring out the window waiting for fate to hear their desperate silent stares.

Bad Rabbits - Can't Back Down:  This kind of electro-squelch funk is the Prince copycatting that I always expected from bands like Chromeo.  Prince's tiny shoes are tough to fill, and yay, this song kicks the right grooves.

D&C - Raise It Right:  Has that barnroom stomp production that Sleigh Bells popularized, but whistful vocals that are part Concretes, part garage-fuzzed Florence.

Deaf Center - Divided
Deaf Center - Hunted Twice:  Owl Splinters features some gorgeous moods on it, and will be essential to anyone in to Richard Skelton or the Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto collabs.  i.e. a fabulous mix of acoustic instruments and sensuous digital treatments.

Devotionals - Chest Like Expansive Wings:  Shades of Dirty Three, but with a stronger roots/folk influence.  Taken from their self-titled album.

Enya - A Day Without Rain (Dntel Mix)
Enya - One By One (Dntel Mix)
Enya - To Go Beyond (Dntel Mix):  DNTEL release a bootleg remix album, with the requisite "OMG I LOVE YOU PLEASE DON'T SUE ME" boilerplate and all.  Enya fans will totally dig all there is to be had.  Dntel fans will find a number of loveable nuggets of electro-light.

Gianna Lauren - Become What You Can't Be:   Epically emotive folk from the album "Some Move Closer, Some Move On" with some of the most blissful lulling horns I've heard all month.

GodWrath - Heart vs. Mind:  hardcore/metal from Israel, from the album "Immersed In Flames".  I have a thing for hardcore female vocals.

Gregory And The Hawk - Over and Over:  Off the new album Leche, I do love the folk with the shouty vocal breakdowns, yay!

Inlets - In Which, I, Robert:  A little bit debonaire, a little bit empassioned, and all sorts of baroque rock goodness going on here.  From the album Inter Arbiter, for fans of Parenthetical Girls (see below) for sure.

Parenthetical Girls - The Pornographer:  From the EP "Privilege, pt. III: Mend & Make Do", a taste of baroque rock and grittier Patrick Wolf with a little taste of Grinderman for good measure.

Telonius - I Do:  Nice little deep plodder with some roots-folk vocals and sampled guitar on top.

The Dodos - Black Night
The Dodos - Don't Stop:  Woah, the new Dodos album is amazing!  So far so good.  And this is from someone who really didn't like their 2nd album.  Very much recommended.  I've only given it 2 listens, but am eagerly awaiting more.

MP3 blog 2011/03/25

blog 2011/03/25 - surviving the moment, savouring the rewards.

oh fuck yes, I so deserve this Friday!

My buns!  They ache!  From working them so hard!    Seriously folks, I've been burning the candle at all ends after dipping it in gasoline.

Oh, if you are in Ottawa this weekend, I will be doing the music at the Annie Sprinkle and Elizabeth Taylor wedding to the snow.
No shit!

I'm on a mission to work for all of the legendary porn stars, I guess.

Colin Stetson - A Dream of Water ft Laurie Anderson
Colin Stetson - Red Horse (Judges ll):  BEST ALBUM OF 2011 SO FAR.  HANDS DOWN.  BLOWS THE REST AWAY.
2011 hasn't had many OMGORGASM standouts so far, but this is the first one.  "New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges" is absolutely essential.  It's mindblowing.  Amazing.  Guh.  The things this guy does with just one saxophone makes my knees weak.

Dark Dark Dark - Daydreaming:  Harkens to the lush folk of Ohbijou, this song is just lovely and perfect "CBC radio" beauty.  From the 2010 album "Wild Go".

Delorean - Stay Close (RAC Mix):  Oh god this song makes me so frickin' happy.  AND THEY ADDED HAND CLAPS.  Total ecstasy right there.

Fever Ray - The Wolf:  Uhhh did someone say OMGORGASM????  This new Fever Ray gets me oh so hot and bothered.  And to think, it came from a new Twilight-esque movie Little Riding Hood.  such hoteness.

Jacques Greene - Tell Me (Kingdom Edit)
Jacques Greene - The Look (Koreless Remix):  I enthusiastically approve!  Tell Me, especially, fuses that post-dubsteppy sound with the deep house grooves we all love.  Goodness me.

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers (The Magician Remix)
Lykke Li - I Know Places:  I still haven't listened to the new LP "Wounded Rhymes" but here are some hot singles from it.  It's amazing how many BAD remixes of I Follow Rivers are out there...

Rainbow Arabia - Without You (Nguzunguzu Remix):  Love love love the percussion.  Totally needs some samples of M.I.A. saying "bang." on top of it.

Thao & Mirah - Eleven ft tUnE-YarDs:  Oh wow, what a powerhouse threeway.  Ladies represent!  From the new album "Thao & Mirah", which I haven't heard yet, but I am dying to get my grubby hands on.

The Echelon Effect - We Will Spin Forever:  The formula is post-rocky, but the beat-driven side of it conjures up epic Ulrich Schnauss idm tracks.

The Mountain Goats - Estate Sign Sale
The Mountain Goats - For Charles Bronson:  eeeeeeee new Mountain Goats!  All Eternals Deck, like all Mountain Goats albums, requires simmered repeated listenings, but the number of gems in Darnielle's massive songbook grows and grows.
And fuck, For Charles Bronson is such a brutal fuck you, it's awesome.
This is more more in line with last year's Extra Lens album, a strong rebuttal to the contemplative moods of the previous MG album.  Recommended for fans.

When Saints Go Machine - Fail Forever (Nicolas Jaar Remix):  Nicolas Jaar is a producer after my own heart.  Bless and your pitched-down low bpm blisses.

Young Galaxy - B.S.E.
Young Galaxy - We Have Everything:  At first sniff, Shapeshifting reminded me of other dance-pop albums and I was going to pass.  But I heard it twice and it really sunk in and there are some really amazing things going on here.  Subtley wins over heavy-handedness, and the whole effect is a tad sublime, but all pop glory.

MP3 blog 2011/03/17

blog 2011/03/17 - welcome to future you

Adele - If It Hadn't Been For Love
Adele - Rolling In The Deep (Cousin Cole Remix):  I am kind of shocked at just how enjoyable the new Adele tracks that have been floating around are.  And after the wonderful Jamie XX remix, Cousin Cole does a smashing job on the remix tip as well.  And hey, a love song about committing felonies?  Sure!

Alex Winston - Sister Wife:  After Big Love, this song is just oh so perfect.   I can just imagine the synchronized line-dance moves that you could do to this bouncey shiney song.

Cut Copy - Where I'm Going:  I'm not feeeling all the love going around for the new Cut Copy album, but I also don't care for the Toro Y Mori one either.  So meh.  But this song is fun and cute in a Beach Boys meets The Hidden Cameras meet MGMT kind of way.

Kinch - Once, I Was a Mainsail:  New track off the brand new Once, I Was a Mainsail LP.  Kind of straight-up radio rock, but I do really like it.  Maybe because I normally don't listen to stuff like it?

Lia Ices - Little Marriage
Lia Ices - Love Is Won:  There are some sparkly and glorious gems on the new LP Grown Unknown.  Check it for sure if these tug on your heart strings.  Somewhere between Nina Nastasia and early Tori...

Nicolas Jaar - Keep Me There:  Jaar takes on the funky stylings of Claude VonStroke and gives us this slowed down, pitched down total groover!

Parenthetical Girls - Unmentionables (Single Edit):  Fabulous and perfectly quirky baroque pop from the latest, "Untanglements".

Sean Carey - In The Dirt:  From the 2010 LP "All We Grow".

Solar Bears - Cub (Keep Shelly in Athens Remix):  While starting moody, this one gets all epic 80s on our asses.

Telepathic Teddy Bear - A Song To Let It Go:  Super touching musicbox pop, cute and sentimental.

The Barettas - Touche:  Totally rocking, like a slightly bluesier version of The Cliks.

The Gaslight Anthem
- She Loves You:  B-side of a new 7" rarity!  Another slow chanter anthem, like the beautiful album closer When We Were Young.

The New Pornographers - Moves:  Oh New Pornographers, you just make me smile some times.

The Strokes - Under Cover Of Darkness:  There is a new Strokes album out!  I'm sure you'll hear about it somewhere else.

These Are Powers - Easy Answers
These Are Powers - Life Of Birds:  All Aboard Future is the album from 2009, and reminds me a bit of Talk Normal but with more boom bass.   Not quite the epic masterpiece, but some great things going down here, especially the chopped Missy beat.

Tom Waits - Yesterday Is Here (Blockhead Remix):  HOW CAN YOU NOT JUST FUCKING SQUEE AT THIS LOVE CONNECTION?

Waking Life - Chirango:  End it all off with a dash of pop rock jangle goodness!

MP3 blog 2011/03/11

blog 2011/03/11 - it all just flows and flows and flows

OK, here's the deal.  We've been dealing with some flooding issues, and that is on top a crazy work schedule.
Also, Wisconsin Republican assholes have been union-busting and destroing their fucking state for the sake of corporate greed.
And Japan has a 8.9 magnitude earthquake.
And a coworker of mine was murdered this morning by what is (assumed to be) a spurned (ex?)husband.

As such, there will be no commentary today.

Not that the commentary matters at all, it's usually just me using the same adjectives in a pathetic manner.
This blog is always about the music.  Fuck music bloggers and their idea that they are somehow relevant.
And really, you should just trust me.

Have yourself a weekend.

MP3 blog 2011/03/03

blog 2011/03/03 - oh lordy lordy lordy

What a crazy week it has been!  Barely had time to put anything together, so here's a quickie for you all.

Ancient Astronauts - Peace in the East ft Entropik:  AA does the traditional downtempo bliss thingy, and are back with a new album, "Into Bass and Time", for the 2011.  Check it out, downtempo breakbeat fans!

Cloud Cult - Happy Hippo:  Happy little Neil Young homage here, from 2007's "Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus".

Crookers - Cooler Couleur (AC Slater Remix):  BANG!  BANG!  BANG!  BANG!

David Lynch - I Know (Jon Hopkins Remix):  Yes, THAT David Lynch, has been having fun in the studio for years.  He drops a wonderfully processed bluesy track, and it gets a few (perfectly) sick reworks.

Douster & Savage Skulls ft Robyn - Bad Gal:  Of course we are craving much more Robyn, and we'll take it in any form possible.

Everything Everything - MY KZ YR BF (James Rutledge Remix):  Ha!  Finally some post-dubstep ish with a bit of a sense of humour.

Hurray For The Riff Raff - Daniella
Hurray For The Riff Raff - Junebug Waltz:  I had been listening to 2008's LP "It Don't Mean I Don't Love You" a lot, and these two are staggering folk standouts.    Are we sure these people aren't Canadian?

LightGuides - The Lion And The Pocketwatch:  Total powerpop rock, from the album "Past & Present".

Mates Of State - Second Hand News (Fleetwood Mac cover)
Mates Of State - Sleep the Clock Around (Belle & Sebastian cover)
Mates Of State - True Love Will Find You in the End (Daniel Johnston cover):  Crushes is the new record and it's a ridiculously fun guilty pleasure.  and you can almost tell they feel the same way!
Such a fun album of covers, highly recommended.

Ø - Heijastuva:  This is such an incredible revelation for the artist.  He's done amazing work in the past, but the new album Heijastuva is at the top of my favourite albums of the year so far.  Stunning.  Gorgeous.  Captivating.  APPLAUD, DAMMIT!

Simon Hinter - Take Care (Aki Latvamaki Remix):  clicky and smooth and fabulous.

Tennis - Marathon:  Garage rock meets 60s girl group superstars.  Hand claps are a must!

The Go! Team - Buy Nothing Day
The Go! Team - The Running Range:  The new Go! Team record is AMAZING.  I was so apprehensive about it, but it won me over on the first listen.  BUCKETS OF FUN TO BE HAD WITHIN, PEOPLE.
