MP3 blog 2011/06/29

blog 2011/06/29 - the storms brew overhead and we run frantic, unaware

Austra - Lose It
Austra - Shoot The Water:  I can't yet pass judgement on the whole album, but I do love these two tracks.   Within the new album Feel It Break lays some fabulous synthpop that combines the lushness of Young Galaxy with vocals that maybe kinda sorta maybe remind you of The Knife.  Recommended!

Bon Iver - Beth / Rest:  The closing track of the fabulous new self-titled album, it is a vaseline-soaked pastel painting of mid-80s synth and bravado, new again for the 21st century.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Braids - Plath Heart:  The new album Native Speaker has been growing on me like a tree fungus.  I feel it has the seeds of a minor Joanna Newsom-type genius.  The songs are expansive like Newsom's latest efforts, and the vocals can sometimes hint at her most adorable of tendencies.  But the roots are more firmly in indie rock, and the closest analouge that comes to mind would be Zola Jesus, for the mood and scope alone.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Dum Dum Girls - Take Care Of My Baby
Dum Dum Girls - Wrong Feels Right:  I hadn't been feeling them much before, but I kind of love the new EP "He Gets Me High".  The best sounds of 60s girl bands and 90s rock fuse together in a great way here.  Highly recommended.

Ezra Koenig - Papa Hobo:  Yes, the guy from Vampire Weekend.

Funeral Party - Just Because:  Just something something rocknroll...

Hollywood Holt - The Show:  I for one salute the age of more anal-sex & bondage samples in my hiphop.

Joe Pug & Strand of Oaks - Hard Life (Bonnie Prince Billy cover):  I can't remember, is this even more lowkey than the original?

Labyrinth Ear - Walk on the Moon (Arthur Russell cover):  The classic gets an honest tribute to it.

Okkervil River - Hanging From A Hit
Okkervil River - Rider:  How many amazing albums are out now?  Oh well let me just say:  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  "I Am Very Far" is genius.  Sheer genius.  Fucking amazing.  Buy it now.  Yes.

Peacetreaty - Change (Flinch Remix):  I don't listen to much treble-attack dubstep, but I do love the synths in this one.  One of the few slam-it-all-on dubstep tracks that I've been loving.

Scott Hutchinson & Rod Jones - I Forgot the Fall:  YES!  That is the guy from Frightened Rabbit.  Why do you ask?

Shabazz Palaces - An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum:  Hotness from the new album Black Op.

Teen Daze - Surface:  Off of "A Silent Planet".

Wild Beasts - Burning
Wild Beasts - Invisible:  I didn't get in to the last Wild Beasts album, and I didn't really care for the new one (Smother) much either, but these two simmering tracks really struck a lovely chord with me.

Youth Lagoon - July:  Beautiful, new, and that is all for today.

JULY 8TH, ART SHOW + DANCE PARTY

MP3 blog 2011/06/23

blgo 2011/06/23 - wait what?  hmmmm...

Did we not do one of these already this week?  Well, actually, yes.  But I had a big backlog of amazing new stuff, so now you'll need to sprint to catch up.  It's for the best.

So does anyone still even get these on facebook now that I can't send messages?  Has readership plummeted?  Let me know if yr still around...

Oh and if you are in Ottawa for July 8th, I'm throwing a big 2-part event.  Art show from 8-11, dance party 11-2.  Get the details here, and please share everywhere:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=218140114883037

Balam Acab - Oh, Why:  New release is WANDER / WONDER and wow they've really taken the epic synth ballad to heart.

Cat People - Sorry:  Reminds me a bit of Whale mixed with Vampire Weekend, which is not a bad place to be.  New album is called Love Battle.

Engineers - What It's Worth (Helios Remix):  I am a big Helios fan, and it's about time they got more remixes out!   They are a bit like Ulrich Schnauss, but with less of a heavy foot on the fuzz pedal.

Friendly Fires - Blue Cassette
Friendly Fires - Live Those Days Tonight (Tim Green Remix):  Both from the new LP Pala, this is energetic synth pop at its best.

Geotic - Union:  Delicate idm resting on a basic plodding synth beat!

Germany Germany - Dance
Germany Germany - Natural ft Donne:  Last seen back in blog20110527, here are two more amazing Germany Germany tracks from the new album Adventures.

GS Boyz - Stanky Legg (Lunice Remix):  OK OK OK, how could I NOT???  FUCKING STANKY LEGG.

Headless Horseman - 1chrd (Blackbird Blackbird Remix):  With this and the Balam Acab, the worlds of dream pop and witch house just got closer.

jj - Ice
jj - No One Can Touch Us Tonight:  New album coming called No One Can Touch Us Tonight!  Very excited.  After rejuvenating themselves with their Kills mixtape, they are back in top pop form.

Niva - Ghost In My Head:  This track is like the last three songs, all added togther.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Transmat Memories (Hollagramz Spiral Edit):  Yeah totally did NOT expect to see OPN get a techhouse rework, but I'm not complaining.  After people remixing David Lynch's song and even Spider Pig, anything's possible.

Purity Ring - Lofticries:  flipside on the dopetastic Ungirthed 7"!  Grotesque beat mutation reveals seduction in the twisted machine.

Ryan Hemsworth - Laboratory Ruins:  chiptune style dramabreaks!

SebastiAn - Embody (DJ Premier 95 Break Remix):  It is great to see both SebastiAn and DJ Premier in top form here.  From the new Embody single.

Swarms - Ur Voice Shakes:  More with the sweet breakbeat smoothness, this time dubsteppy style!

The Antlers - Putting The Dog To Sleep:  OMG YAY MORE ANTLERS!!!

blog 2011/06/21 - It's just once a week, you can DO THIS.

SUPER FAST WRITING!  one sentence (fragmet) each.

Boyscout Discovery - February:  It's like the Books did a pop record awesome ok.

Holly Throsby - Here Is My Co Pilot:  Sweet pop blissout.

Imogen Heap - Aeroplane (Frou Frou Remix):  Total cheeseball I know but oh I love riding that subbass.

Jamie xx - Far Nearer:  Steel drums never sounded so hipster!

Jane Weaver, Demdike Stare & The Focus Group - Europium Alluminate:  Hipster never sound so drone!

Joanna Newsom - Peach, Plum, Pear (Blithe Field Remix):  Drone never sound so -- oh wait, this is Newsom and she is awesome and I am just eternally greatful for any track of hers with a breakbeat layered on top so I can mix it better.

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
PJ Harvey - The Words That Maketh Murder
PJ Harvey - Written on the Forehead:  Complex adventurous and bound to lose you on the first time through, Let England Shake is a major career re-defining breakthrough that should not be missed.

The Antlers - I Don't Want Love:  NEW ANTLERS BUY IT NOW OMG.

The Mountain Goats - Rotten Stinking Mouthpiece:  B-side from the All Eternals Deck companion, All Survivors Pack.

The Very Best - I Can Change ft LCD Soundsystem:  Fucking love you so much, Very Best, and thanks for only stealing from the best.

Thomalla - Gefilde:  always need some deep hednod love...

Typhoon - Summer Home:  Epicly affected or effectly epic?

Walter Meego - Starlight:  yes.

William Fitzsimmons - So This Is Goodbye (Pink Ganter Remix):  soulful electro house blissout and that is all goodnight!

MP3 blog 2011/06/14

blog 2011/06/14 - mid-week snacks for all yr areas.

We're back and knocking it out the box again with another top-notch selection of new sounds.

Astro Nautico - Obey City Version:  Tooooootally dope (pronounced TOOT-ally) chopped breaks from the Quiet Nights EP!  This really makes me wish for a new Kid Koala album...

Aurelio - Mayahuaba´
Aurelio - Wamada
Aurelio - Yurumei:  Woah.   Was NOT expecting this.  This album totally kills it.   This is full-on grin-inducing pop music and I have no idea what he's saying but hell, the joy comes through in the chords alone.  Laru Beya is the album, and it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Austra - Lose It (Diamond Rings Remix):  Austra is snake-like pop music that shares references to The Knife and Bat For Lashes, but Diamoned Rings tosses in a Duran Duran beat and massages it up a tad for the dancefloor.

Bag Raiders - Snake Charmer:  Super sexy house with fabulous flute!  Not enough of these ones.

Chase & Status - Heavy ft Dizzee Rascal
Clare Maguire - The Last Dance (Chase & Status Remix)
Clare Maguire - The Last Dance (Danny Byrd Remix):  Chase & Status give a workshop on awesome beatage.  And Danny Byrd gives a special guest lecture on flipping the same material in an entirely new way, working a pop song in to Happy Hardcore -esque vocals.

Cruel Cassette - Lion:  Another example of contemporary beats pulling the rug out from under you, the ragga loop is flipped in to something more resembling deep electro house and dream pop.  Fabulous

Dntel - Rather Be With You ft Reverb Junkie:  So what, they're sampling old lost 78 RPM records of Portishead?  New album out soon!

J Mascis - Not Enough:  Dinosaur Jr.'s brilliant frontman has pure rock n roll running through his beins.  Well, that and blood.  But he's kind enough to share and now he's doing some solo brilliance, and the new album is Several Shades of Why and I am so excited for it to come out!   *giddy*

Okkervil River - Walked Out On A Line:  Another b-side, from the Mermaid single, more fabulous new O.R. to check.

Snowblink - Ambergris:  From the album Long Live, Ambergris has to be the coolest thing in the world.  And this song is appropriately beautiful.  GOOGLE IT.

The Weeknd - High For This:  yeah yeah yeah.

Thurston Moore - Benediction
Thurston Moore - In Silver Rain With A Paper Key:  Demolished Thoughts is as challenging as it is beautiful.   There are no soaring guitar theatrics and walls of noise.  But there is a contemplativeness and stillness that shows Moore as a fully matured songwriter.  If you don't like it the first time through, listen 5 more times.  You can do it.

MP3 blog 2011/06/09

blog 2011/06/08 - that screeching sound tearing at your insides is progress!

Acid Pauli - Gefaellt Mir:  It's been a while since I dropped some sexy electro house, so here's a hot piano-riffing number from Smaul 11.  Wonderful progressive electro.

Alexi Murdoch - Blue Mind:  From Time Without Consequence in 2006, this song has a hypnotice roots folk that combines the wonderfully lush Iron & Wine with the plodding Bill Callahan, to great effect.

Baths - The Nothing:    Baths drop a new single!  And the crowds go wild!

Blue Sky Black Death - Our Hearts Of Ruin
Blue Sky Black Death - Where Do We Go:  Noir is the new album and it is quite amazing.  The quality levels have been cranked up and here is some downtempo to rival even the storied productions of Bonobo.  Kudos to them for sampling Windmills In Your Mind, but alas that doesn't pan our perfectly.  But the ones that do hit, hit oh so hard.  Highly recommended for downtempo and chillout fans worldwide.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & The Cairo Gang - Island Brothers:  Mr. Bonnie drops a new single of sing-a-long drinkin' twang on us!

Christian AIDS - Fever:  Dreampop meets witchhouse and returns home to electro pop.  From the Life Before Death EP.

Earth - Descent To The Zenith:  I never heard it last year, so here is my first exposure to 2010's Angels of Darkness, Demons Of Light 1.  This is the Earth I've come to expect, that salient cross between Dirty Three and a slightly perking Bohren Und Der House Of Gore.  Smooth chillin'.

Geographer - Kites:  Gleefully fae electro pop!  MY FAVES!

Grouper - Alien Observer:  Grouper are back with their most delightfully sing-songy album yet!  Song structure!  Vocals!  Not just piles o reverb!  New album is "A I A : Alien Observer"

Grouplove - Gold Coast:  Never heard this band before, but some great radio friendly poprock.

Junip - Always (Prefuse 73 Remix):  Jose Gonzalez gets an immaculate rework from Prefuse 73 that owes more to Amon Tobin's latest album than anything else.  I am lovely the new movement of delicately crafted artbass coming up.

Nicki Minaj - Roman's Revenge 2.0 ft Lil Wayne:  Ignore the mix of this that actually has Busta on it, this is banger right here.

Parov Stelar - Diamonds:  Saxophones and house.  4evah.  and evah.

Sgt. Sass - Bang Out
Sgt. Sass - Jerk ft Sugur Shane:  Hot tracks from the new Art Fggt/Fggt Art EP!  Rides a fine line between Beans-esque tonal MCing and enough sassy faggotry to make it all work.

Vladislav Delay Quartet - Des Abends
Vladislav Delay Quartet - Presentiment:  Time for a thought experiment, if you will.  Imagine Colin Stetson teaming up with Pan Sonic and special guests Bohren & Der Club Of Gore.  Now manifest that in the form of one of the world's most experienced veteran experimental dub producers.  OK, now go change your underwear.  This new self titled album is a fucking mindstorm of genius.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  One of my top 3 experimental albums of the year so far, by far, forever.
