MP3 blog 2011/10/27

blog 2011/10/27 - and these are the days we live in

Ash Black Bufflo - Misery Is The Pilgrim's Pasture:  Pulsing Glassian synths?   oh yes!  From the 2010 album Andasol.

Cut Hands - Backlash:  Holy shit awesome.  If you loved Konono, Cut Hands tosses in more tribal ala The Boredoms and revs up the dronenoise on Afro Noise 1.

Dan Mangan - Jeopardy
Dan Mangan - Post-War Blues
Dan Mangan - Starts With Them, Ends With Us:  I didn't love a lot of his prior stuff, save a few songs, but Oh Fortune is new and super strong and recommended.

Elbow - Open Arms (Live from St. Paul's Cathedral):  GORGEOUS.  From the Lippy Kids single.

Giraffage - Polar Bear:  Pumping IDM-esque bass music always get a thumbs up over here.

Hearts Revolution - Teenage Teardrops (Who Killed JR's Black Flash Remix):  80s handclaps and glitter dances all over your fucking face.

Jeffrey Lewis - Cult Boyfriend:  So fucking injokey, but oh it pulls all my heartstrings.  *le swoon*   I love this crazy little dork.  From the new album A Turn In The Dream-Songs.

Katie Herzig - Free My Mind:  Just some more addictive pop from the new album The Waking Sleep.

Moon Boots - Off My Mind (Rogue Vogue Remix):  Jazzy/soulful house is on the comeback, and about time!

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush (Live In Chicago 1992):  Probably my favourite version of this song I've heard, off the brand new live album.  From 1992.  Yeah.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal (Voice by Antony):  I'll listen to anything with Antony, and this mournful piece is perfect.  Can you have imagined this ever happening?  Yeah, and Fennesz is on the b-side.  FUCKING AWESOME.

Soley - Dance:  The new album We Sink is full of that quirky indie sound.  Definitely check it out if you like Emily Wells and Yellow Ostrich.

Song Of Return - Trajectory:  Epic emo post-U2 sound from the new album Limits.

Static Radio NJ - Marc:  I don't listen to much harder rock stuff, but this track is amazing.  From the 2008 An Evening of Bad Decisions...

Tube & Berger & Oliver Klein - Trip To Togo:  Another total banger in the bunch, from the comp "It Began In Africa Volume 2".

Youth Lagoon - Seventeen:  OK, so I'm not gaga for the new selt-titled album, but this song fits right between my ears.

MP3 blog 2011/10/21

blog 2011/10/21 - I am ready for this all over and again and again and yes

Apparat - Goodbye
Apparat - Song Of Los:  The Devil's Walk isn't perfect, but you're in to the moodier lulling electronic of the 2nd half of Apparat's career, it does a great job of continuing in that vein.  There are a number of really great standouts for fans of pop-era Morr Music.

Automotive - Khapoor
Automotive - Klezmer:  Solid productions from the Khapoor EP, returns us to an error where the instruments and mood of a piece can really shine, like early Xploding Plastix and Amon Tobin.

Awesome Force - Priglashenya (live)
Deadbeatblast - Chiptunes In Toronto Track 1 (live):  I really wasn't expecting much.  I sift through a tonne of muisc that I don't expect much from.  But holy shit, Chiptunes In Toronto blew me away.  This album has sets by these two artists and 8-bit synthesis is just beyond compare.  Seriously addictive and highly recommended.

Class Actress - Love Me Like You Used To
Class Actress - Weekend:  Who likes pop?  Who likes synths?  Who likes a sweet chanteuse?  Yes, Rapprocher is indeed for you.  The album is bursting with pop goodness that will sound like a about-fricking-time Ladytron revival.  Recommend for:  bread baking kitchen dance parties.

Daniel Sex Jr. - Debbie Zen:  I love the clunking beats that remind me of my favourite Freescha tracks.

Danny Brown - Brown Eyes:  There's something kind of just messy about this track that is really appealing.

Eskmo - Cloudlight:  More post-Tobin cinematic clunky bass.  Crank up that sub and get queasy!

John Denver - Country Roads (Pretty Lights Remix):  Little known fact:  I am a big John Denver fan!  Dude was sweet.  While this song could do with being half the length, I'll take what I can get.  Get down get busy.

Labyrinth Ear - Amber:  Lovely chilled out pop, drenched in layers of twinklesynth.  Love love love.

St. Vincent - Cruel:  Another great single from Strange Mercy.  I really have to go listen to the full thing one day soon...

The Belle Comedians - Fewer Lights:  From the whirled intro synth you know this will be earnest and ecstatic fun.  From the new album Autumn Ought To...

The Horrors - Changing The Rain
The Horrors - Still Life:  Remember when I was kind of simultaneously blown away and overwhelmed by the last The Horrors album?  No?  Well I was.  But this time they've toned down the edge and put out an incredible rock/pop record that still has some grit and flourish, but is totally digestible and should cross over in a big way.  "Skying" will appeal to mopey brit rock fans and Canadian indieheads alike.  Recommended!

Young Galaxy - We Have Everything (Blue Hawaii Buh Buh Remix):  Did I mention I loved Young Galaxy and their fabulous new album Shapeshifting?  Well it's true, and lucky for me there is a number of excellent remixes out there.

MP3 blog 2011/10/17

blog 2011/10/17 - raining and glazing and flowers beneath it all

Basti Grub - African Gift:  Groovey slowed down house beat with mellow horns and wonderful chants!

Carbon Based Lifeforms - Arecibo:  Who remembers Instinct Ambient back in the 90s?  It was the druggged out technophile black sheep to the proggy and newage FAX Records CDs, and Carbon Based Lifeforms made some great sounds there.  They are back with a new album, Twentythree!

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Memoir
Charlotte Gainsbourg - Terrible Angels:  The Terrible Angels EP is short and sweet with 2 great new tracks, 2 live ones.

Holy Other - Touch (Blood Diamonds Remix):  Chopped + screwed chillwave is the bestest!

James Blake - Once We All Agree
James Blake & Bon Iver - Fall Creek Boys Choir:  The new Enough Thunder EP is a bit meh, but I like these 2 tracks.  First one is all subbass and piano.  2nd one is Bon Iver.  Good enough.

Male Bonding - Tame the Sun:  I'm not a huge Male Bonding fan, but this track off the new Endless Now reminds of the more naive DGC-grunge era of the 90s and that makes me happy.

Mates Of State - Maracas:  After their awesome CRUSHES cover album earlier this year, it looks like the new full length Mountaintops should be here soon!  This sounds great, and I'm excited for the album.

Midnight Conspiracy - Discord (The Chaotic Good Remix):  Harder electro house for that Daft Punky set.

Noah and the Whale - Life Is Life
Noah and the Whale - The Line
Noah and the Whale - Tonight's the Kind of Night:  The emotional roller coast ride in band form is back!  Last Night on Earth doesn't blow me away, but it is certainly much more than I expected.  I listened in to find the one song that I would love surrounded by some rubbish, but oh there are a handful of winners here.

The Drum - Omar:  Love the moody weezey beats!  From the Heavy Liquid EP.

The Good Natured - Wolves (Crystal Fighters Remix):  This leads in well from the above track, then busts out with all sorts of Architecture In Helsinki-styled pop goodness.  Love the pitched-up vox and the Hawaiin kitsch pads.

The Weather Station - Everything I Saw:  From the new album All Of It Was Mine, this is some dark traditional campfire folk for reals.

Unsub - Afterglow
Unsub - Silk Button:  Let's finish up with 2 very traditional dubstep tracks from the new Afterglow EP.  Traditional in their structure and composition, but expertly executed, and given the tripe that has been busting up everywhere lately, this is totally refreshing.

MP3 blog 2011/10/13

blog 2011/10/13 - off to Vermont tomorrow hurray!!

A double-update week!   Please excuse me but there was just a backlog of awesome to get to.

AFX - Quex-RD
Autechre - Skin Up You're Already Dead:  Who would expect a split EP between these 2 appearning in 2011?  And it being AWESOME?   Fabulous.

Austra - Lose It (Young Galaxy Remix):  I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really think Young Galaxy should have got the Polaris shortlist over Austra.  Blah.  Anyways, kiss kiss and makeup, because you sound oh so beautiful together.

Brown Shoe - Late Nights:  From The Gift Horse, just let it build and get all good and epicy at the end.

Chromeo - When The Night Falls (Hercules And Love Affair Remix):  Hercules & Love Affair have had some misses, but they have some top-notch production funk going on here, and I'm not even a Chromeo fan.

Cults & Superhuman Happiness - Um Canto de Afoxé para o Bloco d'Ilê:  Cute little collab from Red Hot + Rio 2.  Totally infectious.  You just try and frown, Mr. Grumpsalot.

Drop Life - Moon Shine:  Beatsmiths are a dime-a-dozen in this laptop studio word, but I keep digging for the gems like this track.

Girls - Vomit:  New Girls!  I wasn't a huge fan of the earlier stuff, but it seems like someone had a dark year.  Like more morose Dinosaur Jr.

Kathryn Calder - Who Are You:  More fantastic pop, from the new album Bright And Vivid.

Magic Arm - Outdoor Games:  Sweet and lulling pop, from 2009's Make Lists Do Something.

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire - Huzzah! (Remix FT Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown & El-P):  Oh this is just so goofy.  Hilarious and perfect.

Ohbijou - Anser
Ohbijou - Sligo:  New album Metal Meets is out now and it's as sweet and beautiful as you expected.  Recommended!

RxRy - Aertigo Lapsees:  Off the Aertgo Lapsees single that apparently came out last year, but I just snagged it now.  RxRy is an electronic music producer in fine form.  Serve with the AFX/Autechre singles above....

St. Vincent - Surgeon:  I'm the first to admit I haven't loved anything she's done quite as much as her brilliant debut album, but I'm enjoying this new single from Strange Mercy, out now.

Star Slinger - Dutchie Courage:  And we close off with a sunshine bouncey bit of awesomeness, doing a fairly straight-ahead all-guns-bounce flip of the classic samples.

MP3 blog 2011/10/11

blog 2011/10/11 - hide yourself there is a stillness coming

14th - Hide Yourself:  Smooth dnb liquid vocals, back at the 1992 tempos.

Bjork - Crystalline (Omar Souleyman version)
Bjork - Mawal (Omar Souleyman version):  These interpretations are just gorgeous.  Souleyman's work inside a top-class studio really shines.  Thank you Bjork for making this happen.  I highly recommend getting this EP.

Born Gold - Alabaster Bodyworlds
Born Gold - Decimate Everything:  What was once GOBBLE GOBBLE is now Born Gold!  Get used to it, get on board.  It is awesome.

Dominique Young Unique - Tick Tick Boom:  boom boom bouncey yes

Domo Genesis - Boss' Life:  From the new LP Under The Influence, Domo's got the slick jazzy beats and this is probably the best thing to come out of the Odd Future crew.  Hope more comes like this.

FAT32 - Hard Drive:  Saw these cats on tour with Secret Chiefs 3 and their stop-start glee is infectious and powerful.  Think of The Ruins with a Devo sense of humour.

Health - Goth Star (Pictureplane cover):  It's like darker electro got swarmed by 80s synthpop.

James Vincent Mc Morrow - Higher Love (Steve Winwood cover):  awww how can you not like it???

MRTN GRWN - Angmaren
MRTN GRWN - Sauvignon Blanc (Deep Into Your Eyes):  Buckle up and get ready for the slow burn. 2 tracks, almost 20 minutes of epic electro satisfaction.  This is post-Kraftwerk chill ish that proves expertise can come with restraint and beauty can come with aww fuck I don't know where I am going with this but can someone please just bludgeon Skrillex?  k thx.

Quintron - Ring The Alarm:  Sucre Du Sauvage is amazing and everything you'd want from Quintron and Ms. Pussycat.  Phat organs ring out with energy that hasn't jangled you so much as when you first heard JSBX's Orange in 1994.  Drum Buddy solos!  Pussycat artfiction!  Area recordings that tantalize the fangirl that just loved the old frogs tape.  And did I mention this wall all created as part as a live-in installation at an art museum?  No album is weirder and more perfect for this day and age.

Sleepy Kitty - Gimme A Chantz!
Sleepy Kitty - Speaking Politely:  Oh this sleepy kitty just needs to dance an adorable little jig before curling up and taking a nap.

The Cool Kids - Penny Hardaway ft Ghostface:  I didn't dig When Fish Ride Bicycles as much as I wanted to, but it's hard to sleep on this Ghostface appearance.  Everything just goes right.

Tonedeff - What Part of Forever (Cee-Lo Green cover):  Again!  Another guilty pleasure cover here.

MP3 blog 2011/10/04

blog 2011/10/04 - if you just wait longer it all disappears and you are alone again

Beastie Boys - Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win ft Santigold (Major Lazer Remix):  Just enough extra flavour to get this bumping.

Beyonce - Run The World (MRC Riddims Remix):  Best Beyonce remix.... EVER???  Love the bouncing pulsing bass.

Feist - Graveyard
Feist - How Come You Never Go There
Feist - The Undiscovered First:  THE NEW FEIST ALBUM IS AWESOME.   Taking notes from both Cat Power and Arcade Fire, this album meets and exceeds my expectations.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Freescha - Babies In Yor Body (Version)
Freescha - Heartbreak Attack:  zomg!  Remember them?  I loved Freescha because back in the 90s they put out a slow IDM track on a 12"...at 45 rpm!  That meant you could play it at 33 rpm and it was monolithically awesome.  Well they are back in fine form with a new set of singles that earnestly represents the glowing electronica that modern producers are only mimicking.

Frightened Rabbit - Fuck This Place
Frightened Rabbit - Scottish Winds:  From the brand new self titled EP, I hope this means there is a full length out soon.

Lil Wayne - Nightmares of the Bottom:  From the Tha Carter IV, an album I otherwise pass over.  Smoooooth.

Meleka - Go (Crazy Cousinz Remix):  If this doesn't groove you, you have no booty in your soul.  That, or you are officially allergic to Destiny's Child.

Omar Souleyman - Haram (Forbidden - I Signal, You Deny):  Haflat Gharbia is out now!  Documenting live performances from last year, this album is rollicking fun for Dabtke bounce fans.  I was so happy to see him last year, highly recommended.  And this live album even sounds better than some of his other CDs, so don't let the negative preconceptions about "live album" dampen your enthusiasm.

Synkro - Viewpoint:  True to the Synkro sound, melodic chords and vocal chops that are unapologetically dramtic, and very well produced

The Field - Then It's White:  The Field are imho one of the most over-Pitchforked electronic bands out there.  Give it a rest, you pitchfork doofuses!  But, this track is awesome, and so I am at least eaglery awaiting for the new album Looping State Of Mind.

The Rest - Always On My Mind
The Rest - The Last Day:  Not sure what to say here.  I like it!

Tom Waits - Bad As Me:  New Tom Waits single.  What more do you need?

U.S. Girls - If These Walls Could Talk:  Badass 60s girlpop sounds?

Zeds Dead - Coffee Break:  Backing down from the bro-step pissing contest, we get some sexier and smooth beats.
