MP3 blog 2012/01/30

blog 2012/01/30 - I'm going to turn around and everything will be like I left it.

Ana Caravelle - Avril 14 (Aphex Twin cover):  instrumental covers of Aphex Twin are always a must-listen.  But to make it so tender and sparse? Oh just perfect.

B. Dolan - Film The Police ft Toki Wright & Jasiri X:  The video is a MUST SEE, but here's a timely topical tale for the kiddies.

B.o.B - High Life
B.o.B - Play The Guitar ft Andre 3000:  Total poprap in the vein of Outkast, but devilishy addictive.

Cloud Nothings - Stay Useless:  New album Attack On Memory out now!  can't wait to hear the whole thing.

Drake - Over My Dead Body (Star Slinger Remix):  Not a Drake fun, but holyfuck am I ever a Star Slinger fan.  Yes!

Horsepower Productions - Rain:  Yes, let's all just pretend that that brostep thing never happened.  After 2008, dubstep split in to chill dubstep, post-dubstep, and Ponystep, and THAT'S IT.

Klimek - Rimani Tu ft Marta Collica:  Movies Is Magic (Extended Version) isn't actually an extended release of Movies Is Magic, it's a b/side remix album and it rather pales to the original.  But this song has some little magic working on it.

Pavel Dovgal - Document:  From the 2010 Cassiopeia, I need a steady diet of crisp-snared breakbeats.

Radiohead - Bloom (Objekt RMX)
Radiohead - Separator (Four Tet RMX):  It's OK, it's an open secret:  Most radiohead remixes really suck.  And there were a bajillion for the last album.  And most sucked.  Here are 2 that rose above the froth.

Rhythm & Sound - Let We Go (Villalobos Remix):  Speaking of sucking:  it is also something that Villabos seldom does.  Witness the awesome jazzy minimalism, the jangling framework, the crushing realization that every moment you've spent listening to electrohouse has been wasted...

Richard Buckner - Traitor:  I am still absorbing the new full length, Our Blood, but this single is so sweet.

Rockwell - Full Circle:  IDM clicks in a DnB framework, pretty slick.

The Photographic - Secure (Amtrac Remix):  This reminds me of those remixes of Steve Reich tracks.  Shades of Different Trains going on here?  Either way, uplifting electro.

The Temper Trap - Fader:  Closing off with some radiofriendly pop fun.  Good night!

MP3 blog 2012/01/25

blog 2012/01/25 - we have vague recollections about what just happened.

THIS WEEKEND, Q-BOUNCE BEGINS!  Exciting, right?
Well hey, I think so.  It will kinda sorta be all kinds of awesome.
You should come.  http://www.facebook.com/events/265886433468691/
Join us at http://q-bounce.ca

Chase & Status - Time (Paces Remix)
Diana Ross - Love Hangover (Paces Remix)
Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control (Paces Remix):  Ravey Chase & Status brought down to RnB sway.  Dianna Ross given a 21st century bass workout.  Gossip gone grindy.  I don't know this Paces person is, but I like their pixie juice.

Do Nascimiento - Bcicletta
Do Nascimiento - Cucchiaino:  Shockingly good.  Short sweet self-titled Spanish release, like a modern day Team Dresch meets Fugazi.  Highly recommended for fans of epicly good punk rock.

Jonwayne - Andrew:  Off the record simply titled Bowser, this is my favourite of the Nintendo influenced breaks.

Lou Canon - Close To Me (The Cure cover):  The karaoke classic gets another treatment, and yet I still want more.

Metermaids - Theory 77 ft Sage Francis & B. Dolan (Bad Things Remix):  Fabulous track off Strange Famous Records, featuring everything you'd want and expect.  Wonderful.

Nosaj Thing - Us (Dntel Remix):  Perfectly smooth.  From the Drift Remixed album.

SBTRKT - Trials Of The Past:  On the topic of SMOOOTH, sbtrkt kicks out the jams, and here even gets poppy.

School of Seven Bells - The Night:  New SOSB!  Love it, can't wait to hear the whole album.

Shugo Tokumaru - Rum Hee (Deerhoof Remix):  Blog favourite Tokumaru gets a rework that takes a great song and makes it even more fun.

Silver Dapple - Want To:  On the same list as Wild Flag for a reason!  This is that post Dresch/Kinney hangover that I always wanted to have.  From the new album English Girlfriend.

The Antlers - VCR (The xx cover):  A classic group of gents covering a classic track from a now classic album.  Thumbs up.

The Field - Arpeggiated Love:  I don't get the slathering love for The Field.  But each album does produce a few stellar tunes, and this is my fave from 2011's Looping State Of Mind.

The Silent Signals - Spark:  Something a bit American Idol about this one, but I love it all the same.  I hope the Glee cast covers it.

The White Stripes - In The Cold, Cold Night ft 2Pac, Biggie, Big L (Voodoo Farm Remix):  I am oh so wary of mashes but alas this one wins me over.

Ugly Casanova - 180 Degrees South:  Ahhh remember the Pixies?

Wild Flag
- Romance:  Ahhh remember the Sleater-Kinney?  Yeah, I do.  And Wild Flag just don't cut it for me.  Alas...

MP3 blog 2012/01/19

blog 2012/01/19 - because we're still on our holiday hangover

Yes, we have a massive backlog to sift through, so you get another dose of sweetness this week.

1,2,3 - Work:  It's a barrock sound, but a barrock sound with just enough hooks and slick.

Araabmuzik - Streetz Tonight:  I am kind of shocked how loved Electronic Dream was!  I think it's great, just not best-of material. But what do I know.  Here's some of the ravey hotness.

Beastie Boys - So Whatcha Want (Cheapshot Remix):  The Beasties have always kind of annoyed me because of their stinginess in releasing instrumentals.  WTF is up with that?  Don't want anyone using your sampled riffs?  ANYWAYS, the gap is lessened by the plethora of dope remixes.  Like this one, digging in that 90s vault.

Big Tree - Seattle Bound
Big Tree - The Concurrence of All Things:  From the new album This New Year comes a rock/twee/folk convergence of grinnitude levels.

Demdike Stare - Violetta:  The "Elemental - Parts 1 & 2: Crysanthe" is one of my favourite Demdike Stare releases because it feels expansive without being at all exhausting.  I love heavily textured and abstracted electronic music albums.  This one falls more towards the fence of post-raver-flameout than total-Mego-ness, and so ends up surprisingly approachable.  Recommended!

Enduser & Architect - Decision (Late)
Enduser & Karsten Pflum - A Little While:  Enduser's been doing the mutant D&B thing for years and has really put best feet forward with Even Weight.  Amazing production values, intruiging guests, lots of variation and great moods.   If you wished 90s Amon Tobin continued more with the mainstream D&B threads (without the blandness normally associated with a typical D&B record...), this record is for you.

Gigamesh - So Intense (Fare Soldi Enrico Pallazzo Remix):  Nu-disco is jiving all over the world.  JAZZ HANDS!

Jacaszek - Dare-Gale
Jacaszek - Evening Strains To Be Time's Vast:  Glimmer is mesmerizing and fabulous.  Had I heard it in 2011, it would have been on my best of lists.  Highly recommended.

Jen Titus - O'Death:  I first heard this song in the (amazing) doc Harlem County USA.  And it's respectabley reprised here.

Parenthetical Girls - Don't Give Up:  Fabulous little track from Demos for the Dreaming.

The Weeknd - Dirty Diana (Michael Jackson cover)
The Weeknd - Initiation:  THIS WAS MEANT TO HAPPEN.  I can't think of a better take on MJ.  And while I still find much of the Weeknd output too douchey for my ears, these 2 tracks are golden.

xxxy - Ordinary Things:  Just some sweet little groovebass.

Yelawolf - Hard White (Up In The Club) ft Lil' Jon:  Can't help it, just love that beat...

Zed Bias - Neighbourhood 09 ft McRumpus and Nicky Prince (Roska Remix):  And finish it off with some more groovebass goodness.  Shmexxy.

MP3 blog 2012/01/16

blog 2012/01/16 - stare forward and concentrate until you see the light

Action Bronson & Statik Selektah - Not Enough Words:  Always have more room on my plate for some Action Bronson ish.  From the new record Well-Done.

Baby Sol - No No:  So straightforward as to almost be adult contemporary, there are some simple pleasures to be had here.

Cuff The Duke - Always Looking (Dum Dum Girls cover):  I think I even like this more than the Dum Dum Girls version.  The twang suits it really well.

Esben And The Witch - Skeleton Swoon (Worriedaboutsatan Remix):  Woah there, some gorgeous heavy magic going on here twisting around with my libido...

Hidden Orchestra - Dust (Floex Remix)
Hidden Orchestra - Flight:  Lush and enchanting, these tracks fuse some of the favourite smoothjazz Ninja Tune sounds with Ulrich Schnauss production values.  So so so good.

Jerreau (of Fly Union) - Dreams BankReau Can Buy:  Fricking smooooooth.

John Zorn - Dance of Albion:  Zorn has been making some sweet straight-ahead pleasant jazz these days.  And by "some", I mean "mountains".  But considering his total output, there's still mountains of scronk for everyone else.  I seriously think he doesn't sleep.  Someone check on him, make sure he's ok...   At the Gates of Paradise is smoothjazz wonderful.

Junior Boys - Banana Ripple:  My main problem with Junior Boys is that the best parts of their songs could be reduced to a 4 minute track, but ah well.  They're output isn't mostly for me, but this one is hard to shrug at.  Go ahead, try.  See?  No shrugs.  You can't do it.  Unshruggable.  The pop, she is too epic.

Justice - On'n'on:  Yeah, I'm as shocked that I like a Justice pop song just as much as you are.  Let's never mention this again and move on.

Owl Service - Fine Horseman (full version)
Owl Service - When a Man's in Love:  I had been listening to The Pattern Beneath the Plow off and on for months.  It's a little bit WTF.  Dark and shimmering folk music that you expect to be delivered from darkage bards.  It's a sprawling double CD set that might even give Joanna Newsom fans pause.  But it's totally hypnotic and worth just letting yourself be at it's mercy.

Rich Aucoin - All You Cannot Live Without:  Aucoin gives us that refined ecstatic Canadian pop music that you know you love.  We're All Dying To Live is out now!

Star Slinger - Dumbin' ft Reggie B (Diplo Remix):  2 of my favourite beatsmiths drop another gem.  Classic.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - No One Is (As I Are Be):  I wasn't in to much of Malkmus' discordant solo material but oh he's winning me over here.  From the new album Mirror Traffic.

Thee American Revolution - Electric Flame:  The way the guitar is in the mix reminds me of both 90s grunge and 60s psych.

MP3 blog 2012/01/12

blog 2012/01/12 - AND WE ARE AT IT AGAIN!

Welcome back everyone, we're here with a brand new year and as always, more amazing music to neurotically sift through.

But first, some amazing upcoming events I am involved in:

On the 21st I'll be playing at
Pitch Black: an evening of noise & experimental music
and then headling....
Ceratin Sort

Then on the 27th I'll be dropping beats at Confederation Park as part of the NHL All-Star weekend.  No, seriously.
On the 28th, Q-BOUNCE premiers!  I'll be spinning before and after the always-amazing Rae Spoon.
Get the details here:

Now, on to the music!

A Tribe Called Red - Electric Pow Wow Drum:  The first of a number of tracks in this update representing some hotness from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  ATCR throws down some awesome parties, and here they drop this amazing beat.

Adam Saikaley - St. Andrews Church:  There was an interesting project called Polytectures where Ottawa buildings' architecture was discussed, and music set to them by various local musicians.  While the concept was often more interesting than the musical output, there were a number of gems in that project.  Local wunderkind Saikaley of course being one of those highlights.

Charles Bradley - Heartaches and Pain
Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band - Stay Away (Nirvana cover):  While dude kind of reminds us all of James Brown while being simultaneously uber-religious and hungover from PCP, he's got a glorious voice.  And covering Nirvana?  Woah.

CHLLNGR - Ask For (Cubic Zirconia Remix)
CHLLNGR - Haven :  Bouncing chill beautiful beats that are oh yes yes yes wonderful.

Heems - New York City Cops (The Strokes cover):  Yes, a Strokes cover, but oh Heems makes this his own.  One of my favourite things out of the Das Racist crew in a while.  Love the noisey El-P -ish beat.  Is it him/

Julianna Barwick - Vow (Diplo & Lunice remix):  Echoey ambient vocals!  Mixed by a beatmaster!  Yes it works.  And it works well.

Kool Krys - Let Me Play It
Philly Moves - Life Is Grand:  2 tracks taken from the 613 House Of Paint sampler!

Megafaun - Hope You Know
Megafaun - Real Slow:  2 otherworldly country/folk songs from the self-titled album.  I didn't like the whole thing, but these ones are gems.

Ólafur Arnalds - Lag Fyrir Ömmu
Ólafur Arnalds - Near Light:  Quiet piano-based IDM/ambient stuff is a huge weak-spot on my heart. From the new album Living Room Songs.

Sleeper Agent - Get Burned:  Totally rockin' driving music powerpop fun.

Sunn O))) meets Nurse With Wound - Ra At Dawn Part I {Rapture, At Last}:  The new collab album The Iron Soul Of Nothing isn't getting a huge wave of interest, but for fans of either it is pretty much a definitive purchase.  You know you want to.

Your Infamous Harp - Fading Star:  Probably my favourite track from 2010's Forever Transient.
