blog 2010/10/12 - Once more before the long weekend!

You know what?  Fuck it.  I'm just going to leave the title as-is.
I was going to try and get this out before the long weekend, but you know what happened?  THE LONG WEEKEND.
And it was incredible.
And things are incredible all around, and hopefully the incredibleness of your life allowed you to carry forward with the energy and genius of last week, all the way in to this week, because this is the week you are getting this update that you were supposed to get last week.
Or so it goes.


Blue Sky Black Death - Threats:  This comes from last year's The Indie Rock Essentials, and yeah, while not totally essential, there are some good downtempo bangers on there, if that makes sense.  I love the chopped gospel vox going on here.

Curren$y - Audio Dope II:  Pilot Talk is the new album, and shit if you are all smoked-out on a couch playing video games, this might be the perfect album for you.  I love this track, and love the totally chilled out steel drum action.  But the whole album is just TOO DAMN SLACKER FOR ME.

Danny Byrd - Sweet Harmony ft Liquid (Jungle Mix):  I've been in love with Danny Byrd for years, and this is another example of why.  All of my favourite classic sounds mix perfectly with the new school production aesthetics.
Total 93 rave piano.  Let's go!

Dom Mino' - Crochet
Dom Mino' - Jacopo:  I just recently got a listen to this album, "Time Lapse", from 2008.  While as a whole it didn't jive, there were a number of stellar tracks that really had that incredible classic IDM sound that I love oh so much.  Fabulous crunchy beats like clockwork.

Emika - Double Edge (Pinch Remix):  Slow slinky creeper beats!   Pinch beautiful works the boards on this one so it pulses and breathes in all the right ways.

Kathryn Calder - Slip Away:  From the new LP "Are You My Mother?", you are almost caught off-guard by the big splash of radio pop in the middle.  I thought it'd stay subtle and folky and whispery the whole way through, but still it's perfectly plotted pop.

Mastiksoul - Que Pasa ft Dakaneh:  Mastiksoul always delivers the goods and here we have some EXCELLENT straight-up house pounding.  There has been such an annoying trend of people putting horns in to their floor-filler tracks and just fucking it up, but we can of course rely on Mastiksoul to school the masses on how to do it proper.

Mowgli & Tara Mcdonald - Can't Stop Singing:  Jazz hands, everyone!  Get yer jazz hounds out for this garagey swinger!

Sea Oleena - Island Cottage
Sea Oleena - Swimming Story:  These are from the new self titled LP.  Folk pop for the 21st century!  Cheerful, hypnotic and just lovely.

The Acorn - Kindling To Cremation (Megafaun Remix):  The Acorn get an unlikely remix album out!  Make The Least of the Day has their tracks flipped and screwed, and I really love this ghostly chanting version here.
The remix album can be purchased directly from Paper Bag Records online, and apparently a version is coming down the pipes with the LP + Remix album together.

The Black Keys - Everlasting Light
The Black Keys - I'm Not the One
The Black Keys - Ten Cent Pistol:  The new album Brothers is slickly produced fuzzed out blues rock.  I didn't think I'd love it at first, but it's really grown on me.  It's totally just straight-forward blues grooves.  Definitely give it a good chance.

Themselves - ANTarctica
Themselves - BackIIburn (Themselves Remix):  Themselves have a bad track record with remix albums.  Their last one was a bit of a mess, and the new one, Crownsdown & Company, isn't very redemptive.  But there is an original track on it, and a handful of the remixes really work.

blog 2010/10/05 - the chills in the air stir my heart


Alpine - Icypoles (Star Slinger Dreamix):  Breathey, pulsing and cute at the same time.  Using compression for good, not evil.

Fol Chen - CU:  The vocals kind of remind me of gay vocal house.  Or Max Tundra...  but the curious instrumentation clunks along and it all kind of works.  The 2nd good track from the new album Part II: The New December, which I am not crazy about, but love a few nuggets from therein.

Fuji Kureta - Bonjour:  So like what are they saying?  Is this French? 
I kid!  I kid!  I love the bassy synth that just slips in through the back door.  It couples very well with the Sterolab allusions given from the vocals.  I mean really, if you love Stereolab, how could you not love this?

Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver - Monster:  Unh hunh.   That's right.  The irony is, of course, that this single IS a monster.  The joy is slathered on slick by none other than the brilliant Nicki Minaj.  Take fucking NOTE.

Manusa - J'Fuck:  J'Fuck me?  J'FUCK YOU!

Moby - Feeling So Real (Don Diablo Remix):  aaaaaaaaaaaa the happy rave classic!  OMG I'm having glowstick flashbacks.
Don adds in some more modern synth and teases us with the ECSTASY that is that classic rave synth.
If you were partying like me in the 90s, by the time we hit the 70 second mark, your pants ARE OFF.

Mosca - Gold Bricks, I See You:  The snares and chopped vox are garage, but the soul of this jazzy number is deep all the way down.  Lovely.

Robot Koch - Brujeria (Robot Koch vs Graciela Maria) :  This track constantly seems to be tripping over itself, but it's got bongos and confidence.  It'll be ok.

Rosie and Me - Come Back:  Sunbeams and love?  This is total feel good pop love, but that's ok too.

Sam Amidon - I See The Sign
Sam Amidon - Relief
Sam Amidon - Way Go Lily:  OK people, this is the big store so PAY ATTENTION.  This new album is called "I See The Sign" and it's pretty much one of the best folk albums to come out all year.  Truly.
Sam Amidon combines Sufjan Stevens investigation of Christian heartland feelings with the trancing and minimal expressiveness of Bill Evans, both of whom are folk monsters of their own rights.
And the emotions teeter between the two, the more calm and all-knowing Evans and the wonder-at-all-life Stevens.  The delicate instrumentation alawys couples with the occassionally raspy voice in a way that is oh so right.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Skream - Finally:  Outside The Box is certainly a producers album, and we all know how I feel about a bucket of tracks:  sift mericlessly!  But Skream gets his Portishead on here, while still keeping up his synth stabs.
Crank the bass and shuffle along!

Skyzoo & !llmind - Speakers On Blast:  Oh silly little bangers, how I do love thee!  and when your lyrics aren't totally offensive bullshit?  Even better!

Slow Dancing Society - ...and to the dust we shall return:  From the album also titled "...and to the dust we shall return", what we have here is a lovely piece of postrockian ambience that perfectly sits in the tub with you.

The Chemical Brothers - Dissolve (Bloody Beetroots Remix)
The Chemical Brothers - Swoon (Don Diablo Remix):  And finally, Chemical Brothers are back with some killer dancefloor electro.  They get some loving tweaks here, but the quality synth goodness is all classic Chemical.

Alex Winston - Pull My Heart Away (Jack Penate cover):  Super magically cute voices... AND HANDCLAPS?  Oh yes yes.  They should get together with Coco Rosie, and make out.

Celebration - I Will Not Fall
Celebration - Open Your Heart
Celebration - What's This Magical:  From the new album Hello Paradise, there is something so indescribable about these songs.   Everything seems familiar, but nothing feels cliched nor expected.  Recommended for fans of Bat For Lashes, Janis Joplin and Arcade Fire.  Somehow.

Datadebt - California Special (Eumig & Chinon Remix)
Datadebt - Moderator:  There's never a bad day for well done bouncey electro pop, all sliced up and ready to serve.  Total sunshine happiness, for fans of Rex The Dog.

Dub Kweli - Country Of Loving
Dub Kweli - Your Gospel:  After the "success" of Mos Dub, Kweli's vox get the treatment to some generally muted applause.  The whole project doesn't all work, but like it's predecessor, a few tracks really shine through.

Flight - When You Wake Up Feeling Old:  For the most part it's full of lame ducks, but I really liked this track off the album "Wisco: A Wisconsin Tribute To Wilco's Summerteeth".

Gunjack - Bring The Change:  THERE'S A FUCKING LOON IN MY JUNGLE TRACK!  Man, if only we could get some dog barks in there too.
A fabulous new track, mixing new school production aesthetics with that old school pads and sample set that we grew up loving.

Nina Simone - I Put A Spell On You (MiM0SA Remix):  The second you hear the strings come in, you just know this is going to be huge.   And it joyfully delivers.

Passion Pit - Tonight, Tonight (Smashing Pumpkins cover):  It is pretty appropriate that this pitch-perfect band of energetic glee should do such justice to one of the Smashing Pumpkin's high water mark tracks like this.  It doesn't sound like the fretted on it too much and spent too long redoing and overdubbing, but it does have a perfect blend of enthusiasm and fresh energy.

Rusko - Got Da Groove ft Gucci Mane:  That shout-out of "Gucci!!!" has been ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE, but this is probably my favourite --and arguably the most perfect-- home for it.  Rusko's LP is called OMG, and really, like all albums of this type, pick it up, rip the singles, and sell it.  Plenty of goodness, but it's still a producer album, tride and true.

Sufjan Stevens - I Walked:  We dropped a track of the EP, but here is something from the new full length LP "The Age of Adz".  I'm loving it so far.

The Chap - Nevertheless, The Chap:  This song is kind of the perfect theme song a band of this name.  As quirky as ever, the new LP "Well Done Europe" isn't quite what I wanted, but if you are a fan, def check it out.  This song still makes me smile, though.

The Society of Rockets - Lost in Dreams:  From the 2010 EP "The World Inside", this has an epic sea shanty feel.  Right before we all get eaten by a whale.  But we don't care, pass the grog, rummy.

Thomas Fehlmann - Berliner Luftikus
Thomas Fehlmann - Speeding:  There's no halfway about it, if you're in to "electronic music" you really need to check out this new album "Gute Luft".  It's kind of all over the place, it's kind of great, and it will probably appeal to most sensibilities out there.
The main target is the dub techno fans, but there's something here for the classical IDM fans, the vintage Kraftwerk fetishisists, the washed out Morr Music pop fans, the ambient heads, and even the minimal tech club people will be bumping this at the end of a hard evening.
I am not sure yet if it will have staying power, but do yourself a favour and look it up.

Yaaard - I Lit A Candle:  A little gem off their split with C Powers, a super sweet lullaby to say goodnight.

Antony and the Johnsons - Fletta ft Bjork
Antony and the Johnsons - The Great White Ocean:  the new album is Swanlights and it is as gorgeous as you'd expect.  It's filled with more rapturous emotion than the existential despair of the last LP.
It also seems a bit more muted and tender.  I still have to listen to it a few more times, but I'm already in love.

Baby Huey - Hard Times:  Baby Huey hits us with a funky soul rework.  Pretty great.

Barn Owl - Light From The Mesa:  From the new album Ancestral Star, Bawn Owl plug another entry in to the sludge/doom/drone/fuzz wall that is the last 2 years.
Soothing.

Buke & Gass - Your Face Left Before You:  Sure, it's pop, but there's something so quirky about it's structure that I'm still mulling it over.

Cee-Lo Green - I Like It
Cee-Lo Green & Soko - I'll Kill Her:  OK, Stray Bullets kind of sucks.  The single is terrible.  But I had to highlight these two tracks.  First, I love the "I Like It" sample, as it harkens back to De La on the HBMS album.
And I thought that Soko track was super great when my old roomie Adam introduced me to it, and so I think Cee-Lo's response on top of it is kind of hilariously sleazy.  but oh Soko's cute cute cute accent!

Cheating Sons - The Last Queen:  Just some more adorable pop/rock/folk goodness.

Dems - Jarndyce vs Jarndyce:  You kind of expect it to be a totally chopped remix at first, but it surprises you by being a totally straightforward pop song, kind of reminding me of Lemonade.
  
Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! - Test Crowd:  The garage-rockeyness kind of reminds me of the Japanese band Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her, which is always a good thing.  I haven't heard the full album yet, but Sea Priest is the name, and Sleater-Kinney is the game.

Like Pioneers - Gift from a Holiday:  Taken from the new album "Piecemeal", here we have that group sing-a-long power pop that I can't help but describe as "anthemic".  but shit, anthemic verses?  I thought that was just for choruses.  Obviously, I'm wrong.  Oh so horribley wrong.

Mimicking Birds - Home and Somewhere Else
Mimicking Birds - The Loop:  The self-titled new album is fricking gorgeous, and incredibley addictive.  It is meditative and tender.
Highly recommended for fans of Iron & Wine, Jose Gonzalez and Liz Durrett.

Monarchy - Love Get Out Of My Way (Treasure Fingers Remix):  Hey Treasure Fingers!  *HIGH-FIVE*  Keep being awesome.

Mr. Dibbs - The Warpigs Routinev:  The routine is an oldie-but-goodie, but it has shown up as a vignette on the new Inducing Panic EP, so it's a perfect time to introduce it the uninitiated.

NeonFlash - Free Tranlation (Alex Casanova Remix):  Electro-ecstatic should be a new genre name.   Seriously.  It's even punny.

Parades - Past Lives:  Remember when I said I loved pop songs with male and female duets?  Yeah.  That.  From the new album "Foreign Tapes".

Parov Stelar - The Phantom (1930 Version):  If you know me, you know I love love love 1930s party music, and so am easily in love with any truck that uses it well.

The Naked & Famous - Young Blood:  There is a huge Passion Pit influence going on here, but hell, we always need more.

Sept 24: Divergence Movie Night Relaunch @ Raw Sugar

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs:  I think I just assumed I had already posted it here...  but nope.  I missed talking about the new Arcade Fire album "The Suburbs".  It's pretty wonderful, not as amazing as their first, but will still resolve all of your major cravings.  Highly recommended.

Bonobo ft Andreya Triana - Stay The Same (Live):  Downtempo maven has a sexy sexy live band.  No fucking around here, ALL GOOD.

Cloud Cult - Today We Give Ourselves to the Fire:  It's like dorm-room hipsters took a break from their Wii to make a funny hair-metal tribute video.

Dan Mangan - Robots:  Oh I just needed to post one more thing from last year's "Nice, Nice, Very Nice".

Eternia And Moss - Any Man
Eternia And Moss - Day In The Life ft Tona And Maestro Fresh Wes:  To the shock of hiphop audiences everywhere, 2010 brings us a good Canadian hiphop album, and a good hiphop album by a female.  The intersection hasn't really been breached before, but here we are with Eternia's new album "At Last".  Highly recommended.

Fresh - Signal:  There's a lot of happiness going on here.  the muffled, processed vocal samples.  The synth pads that evoke the chintzy classics without sucking, the crazy snare runs, the killer bass, the Squarepusher sample nods, it's, once again,  ALL GOOD.

Gobble Gobble - End of Days
Gobble Gobble - Lawn Knives:  More from this genius!  I seriously can't get enough of this guy.  Taken from the Secret 7" and the Lawn Knives 7"s respectively, someone please give this man a kiss.

Hans Zimmer - Radical Notion (Inception OST)
Hans Zimmer - Waiting For A Train (Inception OST):  OK, so I was expecting a lot more complexity out of Inception, but bah, I should have never had faith in Nolan after Dark Knight was just a James Bond flick with some noir paint slapped on it.  Ah well.
As an action sci-fi flick, Inception was OK.  For those of us that wanted something involving a bit more brain straining, we were dissapointed.  Luckily the music was kind of awesome, and here are 2 great examples from the soundtrack.

Lia Ices - Grown Unknown:  The pulsing guitar really adds an intensity here that never quite delivers, but the precious folk whimsy is more than satisfying enough.

Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics - Electricone:  a smooth piece of organic and fluttering jazz, from the brand new self-titled album.

Menomena - TAOS:    New Menomena!  The album is Mines and I haven't heard it, but I love this band I really like this single.

RD - Half A Decade:  I dropped some RD remixes back in edition blog20100426, but here's another blissful bit of IDM beats from the new album "Love Up's".  So good.

Robyn - Criminal Intent
Robyn - Indestructible (Acoustic Version):  Body Talk Pt. 2 is out and rocking shit!  Not as good as the first one, it's still amazing.  I can't wait for #3.

blog 2010/09/16 - the weekend creeps in silently like a thief

Carter Burwell - A Serious Man:  A Serious Man was an incredible movie with only a single weak point.  Fabulous acting, lighting, direction, editing cinematography... and fabulous music!  Too bad the story was a pointless retelling of the book of Job.  Hey, at least they music is still here, and quite lovely.

Doña María - Plantita de alelí (Lulacruza Remix):  Totally ridiculously seductive.  Crank that bass up.  oh so good.

El-P - Meanstreak (In 3 Parts):  A little bit of love from our favourite curmudgeon's Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3, out now.

Forest City Lovers - If I Were A Tree:   Stop it.  You had me at "dendrophiliac".  Let's make out.

Fox In The Henhouse - Fears:  Fun rock pop with a zippy synth!  From the self-titled new album.

Frightened Rabbit - Son C:  OMG NEW FRIGHTENED RABBIT ON THE WAY!  I am vibrating in anticipation.

Funeral Party - Finale:  Is that Supertramp?   NO!  It's Funeral Party!  rock.

Gyptian - Hold Yuh (Chrome Edit):  Feel-good summer jam?  Yeah ok, just close your blinds and go for it.

I Am Robot And Proud - 401 Circuit (Shugo Tokumaru Remix):  Eeee Shugo Tokumaru makes me squeal a bit.  I heart his organic rework.  He's like a robot made of trees.

Jaguar Love - Evaline:  "Hologram Jams" is an amazing title for an album, and perfectly suited to this powerhouse pop.

Natural Snow Buildings - ... I Came Down Here
Natural Snow Buildings - Stuttering Probe:  First track is from "Ghost Folks", which is probably the most beautiful Natural Snow Buildings album I've heard.
I love this band, at least I love the 13 CDs/tapes that I have, which is oddly only 4 releases...
Anyways, the 2nd piece is far more droney and comes from the "The Centauri Agent" double album, which is also good in its own ways.  unh.

Sub Swara - Koli Stance (David Starfire Remix):  A great example of a killer bass that is restrained by a master.  Killer sub sounds without that bullshit gunfire intensity of poorly constructed dubstep.

The Books - Group Autogenics I
The Books - I Am Who I Am:  I am so damn excited to see The Books on their tour this year!  SO EXCITED!  They have put out some of my most cherished albums.
This album still has to grow on me, but there are many many delights tucket in to "The Way Out".  You should of course know their earlier albums, and thus you should really check this one.

The Extra Lens - Only Existing Footage:  HOLY SHIT, JOHN DARNIELLE???  Yes, yes it is!  Oh sweet nectar of the heavens!  I would have this man's (deeply disturbed) child, if I could.

The Infesticons - Plane Anthem:  Mike Ladd has been kind of awesomely kicking shit around in the underground for a long long long time.  He immediately gets immediate respect for me, even if I don't like all of his stuff.  DUDE WORKS HARD.    New album is Bedford Park and this is my favourite track.

Tokyo Police Club - Big Difference
Tokyo Police Club - Gone
Tokyo Police Club - Wait Up (Boots of Danger):  "Champ" is like the hot lovechild of The Weakerthans and Phoenix.
It's incredibly fun rock pop and really HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Black Mountain - Hair Song:  AWw yeah Black Mountain is back with some great bluesy rock that borrows liberally from 60s Zeppelin, but yet maintains it's own distinct sound, thanks in part to the female vocal parts with their joyous warbles.  The new album is Wilderness Heart, and I haven't heard it yet, but this track gets me excited.

Blaqstarr - Get Off (Jack Beats Remix) (Micro Genius Dubstep Edit):  Blaqstarr is taken slow and low, with the vocals pitched out just right.  A total banger.

Christina Martin - I Can Too:  From the new album of the same name!  OK, why would you name an album that?  But ah well, it's pretty fabulous singer-songwriter folk.

David Starfire - Shakti (Jef Stott Remix):  Love the vocal action, and I love the super sexy bass that isn't just pounding you on the head.  It's dancing with you, grabbing you at the hips.

Deekline - Party Party ft Top Cat (Jfb Mix):  Oh dear, we're all about the bass on this update, aren't we?  Deekline was rocking the house/breaks mix for a while, but like all producers, he eventually touches in on some steppy territory.  Or was that just the JFB touch?  I don't remember the original, but yay for a slamming bit of Top Cat that isn't just total cringe-worthy.

Deerhunter - Revival:  New single out from Deerhunter!  This comes from the 7".

Fatboy Slim - Weapon Of Choice (2010 Lazy Rich radio edit):  I was a bit shocked to find something so bouncey on the new Fatboy releases, truly. 

Fol Chen - In Ruins:  This new single is so ridiculously poppy and fun.  It's reminds me of the best of Architecture In Helsinki and the cleanest fun that Yeasayer can dish out.

Gramatik - A Bright Day
Gramatik - Indigo Child:  Street Bangerz Volume 2 continued where the first left off, but didn't go anywhere new.  It's all about tightly produced big-sound snappiness that just keeps on going and going.  If you love simple beats to play with, but want the top-drawer of beat production, definitely give Gramatik a spin.  Solid break beats for days.

Horse Feathers - The Widower:  They're back!  The new album "Thistled Spring" wasn't rubbing me entirely the right way, but OMG this song came out and it was crushingly beautiful.

Konono No.1 - Wumbanzanga:  The new releases are ceaseless!  The new record is "Assume Crash Position" and if you liked the first, it's pretty much just as good.  Some fab overdriven complex percussion freakout jams.

Sean Carey - In The Stream:  aaaaaaaaand we take things back to the mellow.  From the brand new "All We Grow" album, I just can't resist these precious little numbers.

Sleigh Bells - Riot Rhythm:  There's so much goodness in their album Treats, I'll just have to leave you with another banger.

The Tallest Man on Earth - Like the Wheel:  A new single?  Didn't he already release one of the best albums of 2010 with The Wild Hunt?  Fuck, who cares, if he wants to put out more genius music, by all means let him!  From the new release "Sometimes The Blues Is Just A Passing Bird".

The Walkmen - Stranded:  new album is called "Lisbon" and OMG how come there is so much beautiful new stuff around?

Zero 7 - Futures
Zero 7 - In The Waiting Line:  Not a new album, but "Record" is a decent best-of comp that collects a rather mediocre downtempo group.  But wait!  There are gems to be had!  gobble gobble gobble.  Ooo I even got some Gonzalez in that bite.

Balmorhea - NightSquall:  So is this like post-rock meets folk?  Or folk meets post-rock?  Anyways, 2 tracks from the album "Constellations" feature all the emotion, banjo and floor stompin' you'd ever want.

Gobble Gobble - Becoming Legion
Gobble Gobble - Cat Eggs
Gobble Gobble - Wrinklecarver:  What what what is this?  This is SO GOOD.  It totally reminds me of MUSCLES in it's balls-to-the-walls-fuck-you-I'm-awesome-ness. 
SO FRICKIN GOOD.

Guanaco - Sky Burial:  First off, sky burials are just an awesome idea.  It's when a body is placed out on a mountain to let the birds have at it, and spreads the love.  And there's not much folky plucking here, this comes in that standard post-rock slow build formula, and actually becomes really interesting when it DOESN'T climax in to wailing guitars.  Instead, it maintains itself like a long drone, and before you know it, it's gone.
Just like the dead.

Hannah Georgas - Chit Chat:  Great girlpop ala Kate Nash.

Kings of Convenience - I Don't Know What I Can Save You From (Royksopp Remix):  KOC are pretty much always allright by me, but yay for Royksopp fleshing out the minimal folk for even more palatable grooving.

Lissie - Bully:  Great endearing singer-songwriter folk from the new album "Catching a Tiger".

Los Rakas - Abrazame (Uproot Andy Mix):  I don't know any of the peeps involved here, I don't speak the language, either.  But I love the understated groove of it and the sexy sway.

Marnie Stern - For Ash:  New single from Marnie Stern leaked!  Always raw and always distinctive, I'm very much looking forward to a new album.  Her last song had a number of standouts on it.   Check out old blog entry blog20090108 for those.

Pinch - Get Up (Guido Mix):  Beat producers inevitabley go vocal after making a name for their productions in the underground world.  Sometimes it's totally embarassing, but this track doesn't skimp on the soul nor production values.

Savoir Adore - Bodies:  At first I was all about that background click-clack beat, but who am I kidding?  While the synth can go without being missed, I am a sucker for boy/girl back-and-forth songs.

Taylor Deupree - Shoals:  From the album of the same name, Deupree is back in strong form!  The new EP is called "Snow (Dusk, Dawn)" and ogther they are BY FAR some of the bestest ambient and experimental records of the year.  The textures are luscious and fascinating and I just get sucked in to the works.   HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Acorn - Kindling To Cremation:  I finally bought the new CD!  "No Ghost" is pretty rocking, and in the Canadian tradition, written and recorded in an isolated cabin in Quebec.  But of course!
I dropped the big single Restoration in the blog20100528 entry, but I just had to drop one other.  This is a beautiful way to close a beautiful album.  Be sure to catch this band live if you ever get a chance.

The Hold Steady - Rock Problems
The Hold Steady - The Sweet Part Of The City:  "Heaven Is Whenever" came and went, and I put off picking it up because I heard poor reviews.  You know what?  fuck the haters.  It's still a pretty damn good album.
Sure, it's not Separation Sunday, but it's still rising above the froth of other bar rock releases out there.

The Melvins - Electric Flower (MRK 1 Remix):  Ha!  And we'll close things off with 2 heavy hitters involved:  The Melvins kick a lot of butt, and MRK 1 programs a lot of robots to kick a lot of butt.  A good combo, and totally slamming.

Funeral Party - NYC Moves To The Sound Of LA:  Oooh yes, let's kick things off with some ass-whooping dance rock.  Just as much fun as Lions At Your Door and other dirty rock poppers.
Take that, New York City!

Ideals - Love Song:  So many years later and the waves of The Cure are still being felt and enjoyed by fresh new generations!  Fabulous.

Lille - Tall Shoulders (Todd Buchler Remix):  The heavy bass pounding acts as a sarcastic counterpoint to the angelic echoed out voice.  Hey, I'm at least amused.

Local Natives - Wide Eyes (Fool's Gold Remix ft Aristotle Pop A Bottle):  Finger snaps!  Yes, we need more finger snaps in indie rock!!!  The new Local Natives is hot, and this remix just cements things.

Loch Lomond - Wax and Wire:  This one goes back to the 2006 album "Night Bats", but come on people, I can't listen to everything the moment it comes out.  I'll always be discovering older stuff that is just as fresh and important today.
Well ok, this is more old-timey than bleeding edge, but really, you are the victims of my whims and whimsy.

Monarchy - Black The Colour Of My Heart
Monarchy - The Phoenix Alive:  woah woah woah, hold the phone!  These are kind of sort of awesome!  Perfectly-based morsels of disco pop genius, I do declare.  A bit happy, a bit mopey, and totally worth the indulgence.

Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers (Odd Year Remix):  wow, I haven't heard this classic in so many years!  thank goodness for crate-digging producers bringing us back the 80s gems for the kids these days.

Ra Cailum - Existence:  Sexy chopped vox and a plodding chill IDM beat?  Don't mind if I do. 

Sam Billen - To Kingdom Come (Passion Pit cover):  And it starts!  There is bound to be many more Passion Pit covers on the horizon, and oh I welcome them graciously.
Hard to hit with the same power as the original, but oh so fun.

Scorn - Take Someone's Eye Out:   New Scorn for 2010!!!  The album is "Refuse; Start Fires" and while I love Mick Harris with all of my heart, you know that with any Scorn release of the past decade you're just get sometimes amorphous darkcore breakbeats with a few standout tracks.
Well, this album is a bit beyond the previous one, and this track here for me is the take-home scorcher to be had.

Sleigh Bells - AB Machines (French Horn Rebellion Remix):  The funny thing is, this distorted remix  almost sounds like it cleans up the sound.
Either way, we can now take the distorted breaks goodness of scorn and move in to the totally fun pop realm!  yay!

Sufjan Stevens - All Delighted People (Classic Rock Version):  He's back!  It's what you've all been waiting for!  If last year's BQE album of contemporary classical didn't quite get your rocks off, and the Dark Was The Night track was just kind of annoying, take note!
Sufjan is back in strong form, with a new LP on the horizon.  But first, he has a new EP.  Well, it's SIXTY MINUTES, but it's still the "All Delighted People EP".  Hell, the main single is 12 minutes by itself.
Anyways, all that matters is that if you love Sufjan, time to get back on the wagon.  And he's even biting Simon & Garfunkel instead of Angelo Badalamenti, thank god!

Tanya Tagaq - Want ft Buck 65:  I only recently got this 2008 album, because I just recently saw her perform (inexplicably) at Folk Fest.  "Auk/Blood" is kind of all over the place, but a must if you are a fan of avant-garde vocalists.
If you love Yoko Ono and Mike Patton when they get textural, or Tzadik mainstays like Makigami Koichi or the gutteral side of Keiji Haino, you'll probably really be in to this.

Tomoko Kaneda - Warunai Fever:  OMG WTF IS THIS?  I have no idea how I stumbled upon this but it is insane.  And awesome.
Apparently it's the theme song from an anime titled "SOS TV Walpurgis Night Fever", which itself is a fabulous name.
But I'm over 30, I haven't watched anime in many many many years.  Glad to know it's still got some zany shit going down.

Two Door Cinema Club - Come Back Home (Radio Edit):  And let's end things with the new single from Two Door Cinema Club!  Perfect.

Antony and the Johnsons - You Are The Treasure:  Antony is back and as beautiful as ever.  Thank You for Your Love is the new EP, and like last year's Another World, and hell, all prior EPs, it is absolutely essential.
Just listening to these 2 songs fills my eyes with tears.
Whenever I have shakes or doubts, I can always listen to Antony and just be moved to the core, and come out feeling humble and loved.

Blackbird Blackbird - Hawaii (Niva Remix)
Blackbird Blackbird - Pure (Kohwi Remix):  At it's core it's fabulous low-key pop, but the glorious CHOP CHOP CHOP of the digital edits make it an addictive sugar-coated treat.

Buck 65 - Who By Fire (Leonard Cohen cover):  Buck is back, with a whole string of new EPs that will culminate in a collected album.  He starts with "20 Odd Years: Volume 1 - Avant EP".
As with pretty much all of his catalouge, there are gems hidden in the rough.  And this gem is obvious, sparking at the top of the pile:  WHY DID IT TAKE SO MANY YEARS FOR BUCK65 TO COVER LEONARD COHEN?
I mean holy shit, he's been trying to replicate the Cohen/Waits kind of spoken growl for years and years.  It's about time.
I hope to see some of the Tom Waits songbook on upcoming EPs.  Anyways, check it out if you've ever been a fan.  It's his strongest stuff since Talkin' Honky Blues.

David Lang - Wed:  I went out to Boomkat, one of my favourite music stores, and did a David Lang binge.  If you are a fan of glorious contemporary classical, wheterh it be Evan Ziporyn, Morton Feldman, Arvo Part or Rachel Grimes, you will love this man.
He even has a number of long compositions that have the blissful textural qualities of Terry Riley, Lamonte Young, or the best Feldman. 
This short track is from "Elevated", but dang people, get on top of this man.

Dirty Projectors & Bjork - No Embrace
Dirty Projectors & Bjork - On and Ever Onward:  These 2 avant-pop superheroes get together to save the whales!
Mount Wittenberg Orca was released as a fundraiser, and so you need to make things right in the world by going out and getting it.
If you like Dirty Projectors, you'll enjoy it.  If you like Medulla, you'll enjoy it. 
If you hate any vocals that are reminiscent of Jeff Buckley or Celine Dion, stay away.

Moloko - The Time Is Now (Sunshine) (Deadsteppas Boot):   Now here's a name I never thought I'd hear from again.  Moloko was always what news media meant when they said "electronica".  Total "Hackers" soundtrack fare.  But lo and behold, the ressurrection has twisted them into something evil and powerful!  RUN FOR THE HILLS!

The Pass - Trap Of Mirrors:  Super fun bouncey rock/pop.  For fans of The Rapture, Hot Chip, and all that mess.

The Rosebuds - Staying Alive (Bee Gees cover):  Taking disco all dark and moody?  sure thing!  Kind of creepy though, like a hungover stalker...

The Streets On Fire - Hard to Find:  From the new album "This Is Fancy", I just love the pounding drums here.  Fabulous energy and great grooves.

The XX - You Got The Love ft Candi Staton (John Roman Remix):  Follow along now children.  Florence And The Machine did the original, You've Got The Love.
The XX did a remix.  Then they covered it with Candi Staton.
And now John Roman is remixing it.
GOT IT?  THERE WILL BE A TEST.  BECAUSE IT'S FUCKING AWESOME AND YOU BEST PAY ATTENTION.

Typhoon - CPR, Claws Pt. 2
Typhoon - Starting Over:  "Hunger and Thirst" is the new album, and I can't wait to hear the whole thing.
The songs here given me that community-built singalong bush-bash feeling that I get from the likes of Bruce Peninsula, The Hidden Cameras, or The Acorn. 

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Peeling Off The Layers
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - The Course
Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Tiny Boles In This World:  The new LP "Rivers" collects the two prior 5-song EPs that differ in sound, but are united by the seemingly arcane weavings of this difficult-to-penetrate-yet-breathtakingly-rewarding dark folk ensemble.
Highly recommended for fans of Bjork, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic, Rachel's, Woven Hand, etc etc

blog 2010/08/20 - happy berfday to me!

OK, it's been a while.  There's a backlog.  So I am not pulling any punches here, it's time to get back in the swing of things!

Amari - Tiger:  The vocals reminds me of They Might Be Giants on codeine, with an accent.  And the composition isn't far off, but the funky riffs come in a tad lighter than the TMBG funk does normally.

Boris Smile - Aurora:  I admit, I was snookered!  I originally put this song on because I thought it was Japanese progsludge band Boris.  And Boris does make me smile.
But, NO RELATION.
Instead we get some fabulous folk with wonderful echoey guitar sitting in the background, an astute horns section, and hell EVEN A SING-AND-CLAP-ALONG SECTION, which is always welcome.

Die Antwoord - Beat Boy (The Bobby6Killers & Guerilla Speakerz Remix):  If there's ever a song that desperately needed an edit it was Beat Boy!  An incredible song, but it's like 8 minutes of Ninja talking about his penis.
This doesn't capture the majesty of the original's bassline and chorus, but it's a worthy and useful rework.

DZ - Nevah:  The hot DZ singles keep coming and coming...  Another notch in an already stellar catalouge.

El Sueño De La Casa Propia  - Voluntad De Oro:  The backwards vocals here are total goodness.

Emiliana Torrini - Jungle Drum (Jai Paul Remix):  I hadn't heard much Torrini I've loved since her innocent deubt LP, but the synth bass on this one makes me really happy.

Foxglove - Don't Tread On The Cracks (Analogik Remix):  Oooo sassy lounge music!

Glass Vaults - Forget Me Not:  Gorgeous and brooding, for fans of The National and mellow Frightened Rabit.

Gold Panda - You:  You you you you?  Me me me me! 

I Blame Coco - Self Machine (Chew Fu Robotix Fix):  I found this band because of the collab they did with Robyn.  Sounds like the great band The Sounds from 2 years ago, with that top drawer radio pop sitting on fully produced electronic beats that don't overwhelm the vocalist.  The kind of thing that just begs for a Rex The Dog remix.

La Roux - I'm Not Your Toy (Nero Remix):  There are so many remixers that can take La Roux's complex vocals and really just make them slam so perfectly on their bass, and assuredly this is one of them.  Sick.  I just love Nero's work.

Memphis Bleek - Still Ill:  Normally I wouldn't listen to rappers like Memphis Bleek because ick, who needs the bullshit posturing?  But every once in a while a track is just so hot that your brain glazes over all the fucked-up stupid shit they say and it just becomes a hot track.

Nuyorican Soul - Runaway (Mongoloids in Space):  It's not often I'll put up a full length house track like this, but ah well, why not?  Classic big-room deep house with a funky bassline coming in halfway through.

Telepath - The Chaotic:  Some straight ahead slinky downtempo.

The Panacea - State of Extasy:  Ahhh Panacea!  I used to have all of the 90s 12" singles, so I had to of course check out the Rare and Unreleased collection.  post-rave tech-step jungle cheese?  Oh yes please.

The vocals drip morning-after haze.  Total summer anthem blissout, from last year's album "Eating Us".

Blastronauts - Even the Score:  Sometimes it's best not to overanalyze rock and roll, and just enjoy the riffage, guilt free.  Movements?  Progeny?  Inspiration?  Who cares who came before, I'm rocking right now.

Chromatic Flights - Passagrille:  Marimba goes digital... electro-pop style!

Dirty Projectors - No Intention (Live on Sirius XMU):  It's always interesting for me to hear the Dirty Projectors, considering the complexity of their smash hit album last year.  It was so complex and intricate, you immediately wonder if it's studio wizardy.  But nope, you're just a cynical jerk, and they're just awesome.

Flying Lotus - Do The Astral Plane:  Of all the wheezy producers that I hate, I certainly hate Flying Lotus the least.  Boy has some skills on the bass.  And oh, nothing of his has made me smiles in years as much as this bouncey new single.  His production techniques were mostly taken from exagerated filter house in the first place, so it's about time we hear him knock back some straight beat goodness.

Guideo - Beautiful Complication
Guideo - Mad Sax:  Anidea is the name of the album, and hot sexy beats is the game afoot.  I listen to a LOT of electronic music, and mark my word, this album will put an ear-to-ear grin across your face.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  If you liked the latest offerings of Bonobo, Mount Kimbe and DZ, get this one ASAP.

Guy Klucevsek - The Gunks
Guy Klucevsek - Wave Hill:  I had a flash of insight, and suddenly realized I had never posted any Guy Klucevsek on this blog!  A tragedy!  Especially since his 1996 album "Stolen Memories" was heavily rotated in the car for most of last year.  Klucevsek is an accordian master, and fans of instrumental music and jazz should definitely develop a relationship with his body of work.

Hudson Mohawke - Fuse:  Is there wisdom in naming your band off a bad Bruce Willis flick that no one remembers?  Awww who cares, time for some more sexy beats.

Junip - Rope and Summit:  Junip is, quite obviously, a new outing from Jose Gonzalez.  The new EP isn't exactly earth-shatteringly new, but if you love the cycles of Gonzalez's guitar and hypnotic vocal cycles, you'll just be greatful for the extra dose.  Thank you sir, may I have one more?

Magneta Lane - September Came:  Just some pure pop goodness, from last year's album "Gambling With God".

Michael Santos - Alphaville
Michael Santos - Magenta Dayline:  2 tracks of spacey and crackling ambience from the new album Memory Maker.  For fans of Belong, Klimek, Mountains, and all of those usual suspects.

Mitten - Cavalcade:  I've posted 2 of their songs before, but damn they are addictive.  Like The XX instrumentation mixed with the best of Kim Gordon low-key singing.  Delicious.

Wye Oak - Emmylou:  From the new EP "My Neighbor / My Creator", the same release that gave us the fabulous I Hope You Die, this track is more straight forward rocking, but almost as entirely satisying.  The EP itself is really interesting, and you should check it out before they drop something even more fabulous.

CPI - Live for Original Plumbing & Toronto Pride, 2010-07-01

This is the set I played at the Original Plumbing party on July 1st, 2010 @ The Beaver in Toronto.  It also includes parts of the set I played at Toronto Pride on July 2nd.  (Thanks to Morgan for convincing me to putting it online.)
It is dedicated to the memory of Will Munro, whom I did not know as more than an aquaintance, but whom had always inspired me with his fusion of art, activism and celebration.

This is also a big thank-you to everyone that helped me celebrate (in whatever way) getting married!
Hopefully this will carry you all through the many summer BBQs.

While I love it when I am hired to play downtempo, idm, minimal, abstract hiphop, ambient and all that good stuff, those gigs are few and far between.  More often than not, I am hired to rock the party, and this set is a good example of how I currently rock it live.  It is very long, but most of my life sets are extended affairs, 2-4 hours or so, that span numerous genres and tempos.

IMPORTANT:
Since I will be off on a honeymoon for a while, I won't be able to promote this.

I'm happy to announce that I'm going to get hitched and then go travel for a bit.  This will of course mean that your slightly sexual fan mail will be even more scandalous.

I might drop a random update at the beginning of August, but no promises.
You'll note that this update is a bit longer than others.  I break my own rules because I'm a reberl that can't be held down!  Well, at least not without a diamond.


Bomb The Bass - Up The Mountain ft The Battle Of Land And Sea (Gui Boratto Remix):  Gui always does a slick job of taking a downtempo number and pulling it out into a mellow techy blissout track.  Subtle ecstasy!

Well fuck that shit, and give the new album "Dominant Curve" a helluva lot of love.  I know I know, you're scared.  It's OK to be scared.   But this album isn't a wall, it's not inaccessible to your rave-soaked mind.  You can do this.

Dan Mangan - Road Regrets:  From last year's "Nice, Nice, Very Nice",  it's about time we dropped some Dan on here.
Recently announced that this one is on the Polaris Prize short-list, so give it some love.  Since the Polaris assholes are too stupid to realize how awesome the new Crystal Castles and Basia Bulat albums are, this becomes one of the front-runners to win.

Gaggle - Hidden Army:  oh.  my.  god.  This is like Caitlyn catnip.  Like kitty heroin, but for people!
It's a custom synthesized drug specifically crafted to bop around through my synapses and illicit squeals and ooohs.
When Caitlyn has sexy dreams, this is the soundtrack.

Glass Ghost - Like a Diamond:  He has a soft voice a bit like Jeffrey Lewis, with a bit of Chris Garneau sullen emotion.

Jolea - Love Ruins All:  This one has a bit of a pop-producer kind of slick glaze on it, but it's hard to resist the oh-so-soaring vocals on top of a click-beat.

Nice Nice - See Waves:  Scored this great song from the Warp Records 2010 sampler, so I am waiting patiently for their full length album to come out.  Very much recommended for fans of Yeasayer and Animal Collective.

Rae Spoon - You Can Dance:  HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!  THERE IS NEW RAE SPOON COMING OUT THIS SUMMER!!! FUCK YES
I went and  listened to the new tracks on his myspace and I'm so damn excited.

Rusko - Got Da Groove ft Gucci Mane:  OK, Gucci has kind of been all over the internet these days.  He's like a meme, in rapper form.  So it was kind of inevitable that he'd find his way here.

Sebastian Lind - Stay (Janus Dyg Mix):  It's like a cross between an 80s hunk balladeer and Jose Gonzalez, with a bit of Postal Service.  And it's quite good.

Small Color - Hikari No Hana:  How the hell can you resist this?  The guitar!  The whispy click beats!  The gorgeous Japanese vocals you have no understanding of!  YOU CAN'T RESISTS NO MOAR!

The Black Keys - Girl Is On My Mind:  I am always rather cynical about modern blues rock, but dang.  Dang indeed.  This is from "Rubber Factory" and it's so undeniably sweet and satisfying.

The Morning Benders - Stitches:  The new album is "Big Echo" and why the hell is there not more craze around it?  It's a fabulous album.  If you love Phoenix, or Beach House, or Grizzly Bear, you will love this album.  Caitlyn certified.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone that appreciates a quality Brian Wilson-styled pop song.

The Roots - Right On ft Joanna Newsome, STS
The Roots - Walk Alone ft Truck North, P.O.R.N., Dice Raw:  Everyone keeps expecting them to falter, especially after the move to late-night TV, but nope.  Not going to happen.  "How I Got Over" is out now and every hater that loves to hate was lined up to hate.  And no hate.  Frowns turned upside down.  Cats kissing dogs.  Rivers of blood!
OK, it's not perfect, but it's a damn solid album.  And it sets the bar so much higher for rappers entering mid-life:  Age can bring maturity, and hiphop is not excluded.  Not any more.

The Twilight Sad - I Became A Prostitute (Acoustic Version):  Live from the Monolith Music Festival!  If you go back to blog20100404 you'll find another acoustic take as well, and really, it's worth the tiny amount of effort to do so.
When you have a wall-of-sound-orgasm postrock band like this, you strip away the pomp and fury.  You want to see the bones of it all.  And underneath it all their is brilliant and heartbreaking songwriting, and you love the big loud versions even more.

Young Galaxy - Queen Drum:  And we'll close it off with this cute rock number from the "Invisible Republic" album!

AC Slater - Take You (Doorly Remix):  Total 21st century rave-a-thon!  Super classic hardcore business, reworked for the 20-years-later crowd.

Buraka Som Sistema - IC19 (Toy Selectah Remix):  This is the first time I've really heard BSS stretched out and chilld down.  This track just plods in and makes for a sweet summer groove, instead of the antagonistic bounce we're normally used to from BSS tracks.

DJ Earworm - Like OMG, Baby (Capital FM Summertime Ball Mashup):  Speaking of summertime, here's all the summer cheese rammed together.  All the nutrition of a chicken nugget in this one!

Janelle Monáe - Mushrooms & Roses
Janelle Monáe - Tightrope ft Big Boi:  There's shitloads of hype swirling around "The ArchAndroid", but the best parts are the most surprising.
I sear, Mushrooms & Roses could have equally come from a new Ween album.  I swears it!
And tightrope is jazzy funky fun.

Mount Kimbie - Adriatic
Mount Kimbie - Before I Move Off
Mount Kimbie - Mayor:  After a string of ridiculously strong EPs, the new album "Crooks & Lovers" is here and knocking socks off.
Spanning a world between IDM, dubstep and minimal, Mount Kimbie has some of the most satisfying abstract beats of the year.  Highly recommended.

Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective Remix):  Of all the Phoenix songs, this one seems most appropriately attuned to that AC aesthetic, so the remix seems natural.

Sleigh Bells - Rill Rill:  So "Treats" is getting to be too awesome to resist.  So much over-loaded fun!

To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie - The Needle:  Lovingly brooding!  From last year's LP "Marlone", this band wins for best-band-name-ever.

Treasure Fingers & Jocelyn Brown - What Am I Supposed To Do:  Awwww shiiiiiit, Treasure Fingers is BACK WITH THE GLORIOUS SLAMMING PUMPING HOUSE!

Wavves - Post Acid:  I have to say, I really really hated all Wavves.  Up until now.  I don't have the full length, "King Of The Beach", yet, but fuck thank you for letting the pop joy seep through.
Fuck, I am really hoping we're over the lo-fi bullshit.  LET THAT POP FLAG FLY!  Thank you, Sleigh Bells, for teaching the scruffy kids of 2009's worst fad how to do it right.

Wisp - Hidebehind:  "The Shimmering Hour" rocks a part of me that is seldom rocked, outside of the classic Warp and Rephlex catalouges.
Scattershot RDJ beats, de-tuned BOC synths, Paradinas-lifted chord progressions and Machine Drum breakbeat-love.
If you are a fan of the classic IDM sound, defintely get this album.

You Say Party! We Say Die! - Lonely's Lunch:  I had mostly ignored the album "XXXX" when it came out last year, but these singles caught my ear.
They are much mellower indie pop than I was lead to believe they'd be, but they fit in perfectly with some Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
