A Hawk And A Hacksaw - Lazslo Lassú:  Was the big band sound of the last Beirut album making you drool?  You will probably love the new album Cervantine by A Hawk And A Hacksaw.  I wasn't in to the whole thing, but it does come at you with some incredible instrumental music.  These two tracks here are a delight.

Adrian Lux - Teenage Crime:  Yessssssss!  This song reminds me of my friend Adam.

Bombaman - Mmeelloo Ssttaarr:  From the new EP of the same name, a devastatingly sexy little stepper.  The pitched-all-over up breathey samples make it just irresistible.

Cloud Nothings - Should Have:  It's lo-fi, but more Eric's Trip and twee pop fun than Vivian Girls.  From the self-titled new album!

Crystal Fighters - At Home (Disclosure Mix):  The bloghousey wackiness is put in line for this great deep club killer.

Ghostface Killah - Mighty Deadly (4di Remix):  BEAT SO HOT!

Gil Scott-Heron And Jamie XX - I'm New Here

Jamie xx - Rolling in the Deep (Remix ft Childish Gambino):  Jamie's been busy!  His remix album of Gil Scott-Heron ended up being better in theory, but still worth a listen.  When Jamie hits, it's golden.  That's why Yog Soggoth gave you a next track button.

Jenny and Johnny - Big Wave:  In the tradition of Metric and Beach House, off the new album I'm Having Fun Now.

Jenny O. - Won't Let You Leave (Spirit Animal Remix):  Sweet pop with sword of +2 bass beat.

Kathryn Calder - Arrow:  Calder's folk is wistful and romantic and oh keep singing for me fire pixie!

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper - Penny Licks:  All of the plucky go-getter attitude of Tune-Yards with the surefire indie revelry of Yellow OStrich.  Delicious.

Love Axe - Never:  From last year's album Phenomenomenons.

Police Academy 6 - Wanting Something:  More of that merging of post-dubby Mount Kimbe clicks-a-lot with that down-pitched slowed out witchy business.  And a perfect tribute to a fabulous movie, to boot.

Pomplamoose - Hail Mary:  Reminds me of my favourite parts of My Brightest Diamond with a dash of Florence & The Machine.  Nice nice nice.

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Mill Theme (Robotaki Remix):  Yeah, I wasn't expecting such a straight-up Bonobo-tribute downtempo number either, but there you have it.

Tim Hecker - Hatred Of Music II
Tim Hecker - In The Air II:    Man, I was so ready to snark.  I got really bored of Tim Hecker over the years.  A number of his albums just left me super flat.  And not like Murakami superflat either.  I was so ready to be all *yawn* next?
But no, the new album "Ravedeath, 1972" does not skimp, does not bore, and does not let anyone down.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Yosemite Jack & Afrojack - Double Rainbow Replica (Cave Cake Edit):  Yes yes, just had to end it with this.  YOU ARE WELCOME.

Wow, what a crazy week for you all! 
New Akron/Family, new Iron & Wine, new Okkervil River, new Go! Team, new Mountain Goats...  *phew*
2011 is revving up!  Let's get right to it.

Akron Family - Another Sky
Akron Family - Canopy:  "S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT" is a fucking fabulous record.  It's the record you wished Flaming Lips made 2 years ago instead of that silly mess.
Highly recommended for fans of Flaming Lips, Yeasayer, Animal Collective and all that neckbeard ish.  Expect to see indie kids spontaneously ejaculating.

Alan Pownall - Colourful Day (Seams Remix):   Delicate and emotive and wonderful.

Damien Jurado & Richard Swift - Be Not So Fearful (Bill Fay cover):  Ahhh the haunting choral organ sample, how I love thee.  I haven't heard you since that Monopuff album!

Delphic - Counterpoint (Doorly Remix):  Doorly gives the fabulous bouncey beat, Delphic hits us with that perfect pop bliss.  mmmmmm!

Garfunkel and Oates - Gay Boyfriend:  Hurray!  The tracks have been floating around and on youtube for a while, but All Over Your Face collects all of the favourites, recorded studio-crisp!  And yes, these songs helped land that woman a role on the show Raising Hope, and goddamn she deserves it.

High Highs - Open Season:  Pretty standard, but also pretty darn good.

Home Video - Every Love That Ever Was (You You're Awesome Remix):  Best name for a producer... EVER???

Hurts - Wonderful Life (Mantronix Remix):  HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME.  First off, 80s synth beat superstar Mantronix ressurects all of the best of the electro beat groove for this remix, and on top of that the underlying song is brilliant to boot.

Iron & Wine - Rabbit Will Run:  This one is a tragedy...  Kiss Each Other Clean just isn't a good album.  There, I said it!
The Walking Far From Home EP had a triple threat of tantalizing biblically epic jams and it was GREAT.  This album?  A lot of meh.  Except this song is pretty good as well.  Le *sigh*

Okkervil River - Mermaid:  OH MY GOD NEW OKKERVIL RIVER!  I AM EXPLODING IN SLOW MOTION!!!!

Patrick Wolf - The City (Richard X Remix):  Glamour god Patrick Wolf sounds so sweet in remixes.  I've never been a huge fan of his original material, but every once in a while a good remixer will just make him perfect to my ear.

Piroth - Feelings (Harald Bjork Remix):  The sparse strings is what really does it for me here.  Truly under-utilized in minimal techno forms!

The Go! Team - Apollo Throwdown (Star Slinger Remix)
The Go! Team - Voice Yr Choice:  I have yet to grab the new CD Rolling Blackouts, but if these two tracks are any indicaiton, I am super psyched for it!

The Mountain Goats - Damn These Vampires:  DID I MENTION THAT I AM EXPLODING IN SLOW MOTION?????  So excited for All Eternals Deck to come out.

The Naked And Famous - Girls Like You:  Electro pop goodness!  That's it, that's all!

MP3 blog 2011/02/11

blog 2011/02/10 - SPECIAL POST of golden oldies for the ages!  Another dip in to the vault

DID YOU KNOW???
They actually made music in the 20th century?  Yes, it's true!
They had gizmos and watchamacallits and pots and pans and metal wires of whoosh and zing and it all came together and made the primitive sounds that helped define our modern culture.
Amazing, I know!  FUN FACTS ABOUND!

So to pay homage to the dusty ages of the 1990s and the times that came before then (And as well to demonstrate that I indeed do not just listen to "new music"...) let's dip in to some classic 20th century eclectica that has been tickling my toosh as of late.

This is a MEGA POST!  Over 2 hours of goodness.  Many years.  Some smash hits, some crate-digger rarities, some 78-rpm transfers, some timeless underground classics.

I have sorted the playlist based on year, so be sure to use the M3U file if you wish to proceed chronologically.



Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe McCoy - I Called You This Morning (1931):  Let's start with a fabulous roots blues duet, taken from the Last Kind Words collection.  It's the tried and true tradition of deliberating your relationship issues through song!

The Evening Breezes Sextet - The Coal Loading Machine (1933):  Hey, do you enjoy your weekends?  Then thank the labour movement, who struggled against bloody retribution to get the working conditions we have today.  The struggle also produced some absolute classics of Western folk music, too.

Leadbelly - Bottle Up And Go; Polly Polly Wee (Frog Song) (1948)
Leadbelly - Nobody Knows When Your Down And Out; Bully Of The Town (1948):  I download lots of random out-of-print albums to check out at later times, and was just floored when on came a rip of the old Folkways 4 LP set "Leadbelly's Last Sessions".  It was beautifully presented, with mostly just the raw tapes, giving you all the talking between songs.   These are from the end of his life, and he is recounting all of the classics for the magnetic tape of the ages.  What a blessing it is.

Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - Dream A Little Dream Of Me (1950):  This piece intersects in the right way.  Imagine a Venn Diagram, one set of "top 10 Ella songs", "top 5 Armstrong songs", and "top 2 renditions of Dream A Little Dream"  and you'll find this classic.

Brother Willie Blue - I'm Pressing On (1950s):  Another root of Western music is the storied gospel traditions, and the compilation "Fire In My Bones: Raw + Rare + Other-Worldly African-American Gospel" gives a satisfying cross-section.  This song however just jumped out at me for it's fabulous delivery that transcends the simple melody by far.

Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come (1964):  Classic classic Cooke.

The Monkees - Shades Of Gray (1967):  As a kid, The Monkees re-runs were on constantly after school.  On their 3rd album, The Monkees actually started doing their own thing and tried to shed their manufactured image.  It was a friend in school who turned me on to this track, one of my first melancholic loves.

Zombies - This Will Be Our Year (1967):  Covered so often, I had to dig back to the original because I love it oh so so much.  Probably my most loved of earnest love songs, truly.

Mary Jane Hooper - I've Got Reasons (1969):  Sing it, sister!

Randy Newman - Let's Burn Down The Cornfield (1970):  If your only exposure to Randy Newman was the parody on Family Guy, oh man, there's a whole world of goofy sass to unearth.

Adriano Celentano - Prisencolinensinainciusol (1972):  All of the words are gibberish, sung in a quasi-American style and Elvis-heavy swagger.  I don't know much about Italy, but this is one of my top 5 favourite imports.

Aphrodite's Child - Four Horsemen (1972):  This is one of those songs that found my way all on it's own.  I don't know the band, don't know how big their hairdos are, but damn this is allllll bout what 70s rock did so right.

Liza Minelli - Cabaret (Cabaret OST) (1972):  DOESN'T MY BODY DRIVE YOU WILD WITH DESIRE?

Sun Ra and His Astro Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra - Rocket Number Nine (1972):  Space Is The Place is one of my favourite artefacts of the 70s, and the future jazz really shines here.

Temptations - Ain't No Sunshine (1972):  Classic extended funk jams!  Oh so delicious.

Celia Cruz & Johnny Pacheco - Quimbara (1974):  Another one where I have no idea about it, but oh I love.

Dolly Parton - Jolene (1974):  Gah, total gushing classic.  No, you can't do it at karaoke.  A few more rounds of drinks first, please.

Billy Squier - The Big Beat (1980):  oh gee, where have I heard this before?  Yeah that's right, Mr. Dizzee Rascal basically sampled the entire song for his Fix Up, Look Sharp hit.  How did like 25 years pass with no one doing the exact same thing before?

Bow Wow Wow - C30, C60, C90, Go (1980):   You want candy?  YOU WANT SOME FUCKING CANDY?  Bow Wow Wow were not just a one-hit wonder, people!  They had some fabulous grooves.  Like Whale, 20 years beforehand.  And we all know candy meant cocaine.  So shove it.

The Normal - Warm Leatherette (1980):  A perfect follow-up to the above is probably my favourite true one-hit-wonder, and ultimate proto-industrial dancefloor single ever.  And it's about Ballard's Crash to boot!

Barnes & Barnes - Fish Heads (1982):  YOUR HEAD IS NOW EXPLODING!  A favourite song from the early days of Much Music, back when there weren't actually that many music videos, is this oddball favourite.  It even came on a fishhead shaped vinyl.

Vangelis - Rachael's Song (Blade Runner OST) (1982):  Pretty much the best thing Vangelis ever did, and he's done a lot of good work.  But see, in the 90s the melodies here were orgasm enducing as they got sampled wholesale on one of the decades greatest electronica records.  Then when people went digging for the Blade Runner soundtrack, they were all WHAT THE FUCK because this song was somehow LEFT OFF OF IT.  Subsequent fan-built compilations cprrected those grave injustices.

Talk Talk - It's My Life (1984):  80s synth pop... with an edge of awesome!

Martin Galway - Arkanoid; Title (C64) (1986):  Did someone say proto-industrial?  Here, check the badass deep synths renched from the bowels of a Commodore 64 computer for one of the most popular games of 1980s.  Fire up those fruityloops, kiddos.

The Art Of Noise - Paranomia (1986)
The Art Of Noise - Peter Gunn ft Duane Eddy (1986):  Continuing with the electronic revolution, I point to In Visible Silence as one of the timeless records of the 1980s.  The songs are so amazingly constructed that they are innovative beyond the days people will ever spend slaving over their Ableton Live effects chains.  The subtlety and imagination at play is enormous.  In the way that Kraftwerk's art transcended their peers in the 70s, the Art Of Noise did likewise here in the 80s.

The Pogues - The Body of an American (1986):  We now interrupt this blog posting to get right drunk.

Jim Henson & Ladysmith Black Mambazo - African Alphabet (1987):  Oh this is so beautiful it almost moves me to tears.  Kermit, as portrayed by Henson, in the classic piece LBM.  sooooo goooood

unknown composer - Shadowgate; Ending (NES) (1987):  The 2nd slice of videogame history, the ecstatic ending to Shadowgate!  Really, when this comes on, shit has been so tense and deep that it's like a baptism.   A baptism of awesome.

Jessica Rabbit - Why Don't You Do Right (1988):  Are we stuck on my childhood?  Sure.

The Thrown Ups - Traffic Accident Sex (1989):  After Warm Leatherette, this is just kinda perfect, k?

Yoshihiro Sakaguchi - Duck Tales; The Moon (NES) (1989):  We have here one of the great compositions coming out of the 8-bit video game era.  One of the greatest NES games, Duck Tales, surprised everyone with just how intelligent and fun it was.  Top it all off with loads of secrets, non-linear play, and a killer soundtrack and you have crack for children.

Genesis - Jesus He Knows Me (1991):  Growing up, I think song marked the first time for me when I really became aware of sarcasm, namely political sarcasm.  It is not quite Land Of Confusion in terms of classics, but shit, it's one damn fine Genesis song.

Built To Spill - Reasons (1994):  Awww man, over all ready?  So close to the end...  OK, here's a sweet little number from "There's Nothing Wrong With Love".

Cap'n Jazz - Oh Messy Life (1995):  And goodbye and so long for now.  I leave you with the greatest emo hardcore song of the 1990s, in my increasingly irrelevant opinion.  Time for some Thai food and gender theory.

Das Racist - You Oughta Know:  I had forgotten to pass some love to Das Racist's first mixtape of 2010, so here are some hot hot hot tracks from "Shut Up, Dude".  Just dope dope dope.

Dom - Living In America (Remix ft Gucci Mane):  ZOMG!  Dream wave chillout witch business gets a total hiphop groove and Guccccccciiiiii slides in on top.  The future is awesome.  Wish you were here.

Early to Bed - Weathervane:  Brand new single be distributed, some adorable dreamy pop here.

Henrik Schwarz - Once Again (Kuniyuki Takahashi Version):  I've been on a huge Schwarz kick in the past month, and this is far and away one of my favourites.  Groovey piano samples, soulful house vocals that don't make me want to stab my eyes out, and a solid deep groove that is just delicious.

Hold Tight! - Virginia Is Beautiful, Wish You Were Here:  I don't listen to lots of punk, but every once in a while I find something that captures my childhood and synthesizes my favourite bits of NOFX and Fugazi and puts it in to a 90 second package.  From the new album Can't Take This Away.

Jacques Greene - The Look (Koreless Remix):  Smooth clicky Mount Kimbe-esque dubstep grooves!  A little more stripped down that MK, but should slot itself perfectly in the mix.

James Blake - Measurements
James Blake - To Care (Like You):  First, let me be the first to say it:  Pitchfork is bullshit and James Blake wasn't the genius of 2010 everyone there claims him to be.  He had a few good tracks, yes, but so did many equally great producers.  That said, the new self titled album has a few revelations on it that deserve your attention.   What's happening here is a maturation and development of an electronic artist not seen since Jamie Lidell in 2009.  When the soul takes the forefront, genius rises to the top.  Can't wait to hear these two tracks in the clubs.

Kid Sister - Right Hand Hi (Caspa Remix)
Kid Sister - Work Them:  The new album Stoney Roads is perfect for your next dance party.  It's even built up like a DJ mix and the energy never wavers.  Get naked, get funky.  Get this CD.

Laura Peek - Stay Sharp:  Shades of Florence & The Machine, but with a few more handclaps for good measure.  From the new LP "Key".

Lee Webster - Just About Bread:  While a parody of deep house, also an amazing deep house track.  It takes mad talent to both excel at and poke fun at the same thing, at the exact same time.  Mad props.

Purity Ring - Ungirthed:  It's like The Sundays were ressurected in to the age of mutant bass beat awesomeness.  You, please go touch yourself while watching Gobble Gobble and Baths make out.  Oooooo hot.

Ryan Hemsworth - Benny Lava:  Solid overload breaks that rip some bollywood goodness and lay it out with just enough distortion.  So good.

White Sea - Mountaineer:  Off the 2010 "This Frontier EP", it reminds me of a more "indie rock" take on Bat For Lashes.  In the best possible way.

Who Knew - Sharpen The Knife:  From 2010's "Bits and pieces of a major spectacle", they totally remind me of Wolf Parade meets Walkmen, and are super duper satisfying.

Yellow Ostrich - Hold On
Yellow Ostrich - I'll Run:  Their EP made my "best of 2010" list, and here is their full length "The Mistress"!  It features the two hot tracks from the 7", Whale and Mary, and so much more.  The sound is uber indie, maybe to the point of turning some people off, but really if you like the organic sounds of High Places and Animal Collective, but want a bit more of a Modest Mouse framework, this band is for you.  Recommended!

Andy Shauf - You Remind Me:  I just recently discovered 2009's Darker Days album, and it has some fabulous folk if you are in to earnest flavours of Elliott Smith, Great Lake Swimmers or Sarah Harmer.

Annabel - The Forgetting of Names and Faces:  Can't deny the unwavering energy of this power pop.  From "Here We Are Tomorrow". 

Blackbird Blackbird - Lasthopesgone:  Another BB track that I love!  Woot.  I hope this is a sign of things to come.  The dream-pop has faded to the Gatekeeper-esque synth lines, and the crowd rejoices!

Gui Borratto - Beautiful Life:  I first heard this on the soundtrack for the short film "I'm Here", and WOW is this some epic storytelling electro.  It's like the epic chug of Ulrich Schnauss, wrapped in an inspirational electro house wrapper.

Guido - Korg Back:  I found this gem on the collection of originals for the "Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space" album.  I haven't heard the Scientist verisons yet, but this track reminds me why I spent so much fo 2010 praising Guido.  Bring it!

Meligrove Band - Bones Attack!!
Meligrove Band - Halflight:  Off 2010's "Shimmering Lights", these tracks are what Los Campensinos would be like if they weren't always sounding like they were fighting, and had a big ole drunk-a-thon with Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Pawn - Morning Tone:  The compilation "Forma. 3.10" is full of revelations that give you inspiring evidence that IDM is still a powerful force to be reckoned with.  The stark beauty of this track is argument enough for it's salvation.

Portland Cello Project - Denmark
Portland Cello Project - Take Five (Dave Brubeck cover):  First, kudos for the straight-forward name.  No mucking around there.  The new album is "Thousand Words" and while I couldn't jive with the whole thing, I just love the gusto of it all.  And hey, who doesn't love some classic Brubeck... done CELLO style???

Sunday Girl - Self Control (Laura Branigan cover):  This is one of those songs where you go "holy shit!  I totally forgot about that song!" until you hear someone cover it.

The Rest - Walk On Water (Auspicious Beginnings):  Epic pop ala Broken Social Scene, from the 2009 album "Everyone All At Once".

Unkown Sh?pes - If I Should Die
Unkown Sh?pes - Used To Give A FK:  The new "If I Should Die EP" is hot shit!  don't be confused by the clever name referencing the shapes in the name, this owes more to dubstep than it does to witch house.  But fuck, who cares, it's super bouncey and easily the most dancefloor-ready witchy shit out there.

White Denim - Light Light Light:  Off the 2009 "Last Day Of Summer" (oh what a saccarine title!), we end with a bit of dense jazz that just swishes through it's dense little clusters and leaves your brain beaming and clean.

blog 2011/01/25 - oh owe my hands hurt.



Console - A Homeless Ghost
Console - Cutting Time.:  The latest album is Herself and does a pretty good job synthesizing all of the disparate Consoles audiences have loved them for over the past few years.  The smooth electro that got you grooving on Fourteen Zero Zero is here, the contemporary vocal pop is here, as is the IDM-ey emotional electronic soundscapes.
It all doesn't come together in a perfect way, but definitely worth checking out for fans of Console, Styrofoam, Ladytron, and modern synth music in general.

Fol Chen - In Ruins (Baths Remix):  The original was so over-the-top bouncey pop, the Baths are like a bucket of ice slid down it's back.  The original zest is all still there, but now buried under some chill-wave mid-range pumping distortion.  For 2011, I hope Yeasayer go Witch House.

Make The Girl Dance - Wall Of Death ft Solange La Frange (Sawagii Remix):  No no, not Beyonce's sister, a different Solange.  But still super awesome!  Love the yelping.  I love that the verses are all just yelping.  And it's always really good to explicitly state that this is indeed music for animals.

MGMT - Congratulations (Erol Alkan Rework):  This works perfectly.  The original was a somber Ween-esque meditation on aged success, but the tone fits oh so perfectly with this Todd Terje-styled beat.  Groove it.

Phoenecia - As Pergillus:  wow wow wow.  I am not sure how I missed it, but the 2009 album Echelon Mall is fucking mind blowing.
Remember when Xela made tear-inducing beautiful IDM, but then went all sound-art wank and now produces lofi noise tapes?  So many of the old IDM kiddos have gone that way, or in to vocal electro pop.
Phoenecia goes towards the Xela route, except the meticulous sound-art compositions here never waver in quality and depth.  These kick Ben Frost's shiny bum.  This album is so good, it is up there with O.S.T.'s masterpiece Seimlste.  Highly recommended for fans of dark soundscapes.

Radio Slave - I Don't Need a Cure For This (Kenny Larkin Remix):  Perennial favourite around here, Radio Slave has one of the highest ratios of killer to filler than any other Beatport-friendly artist I know of.  I have to say, I love the last few years of including random piano riffs sparsely in these deep house tracks.

Rusko - Hold On (Them Jeans Remix):  When Them Jeans are on the track, I always expect things to be a tad goofier, but they keep a straight face here and deliver a solid and deep bass track for this perfect pop track.  In my perfect world, this is what top 40 radio would play.

Scanners - Baby Blue (Egon Brainparts of Bossasaurus Remix):  Another nugget of epic pop brilliance, wrapped in a bass prosciutto.

The Dø - Dust It Off
The Dø - Too Insistent:  While I am not crazy about the new full length, the single Dust It Off EP is pretty pitch perfect.  Having discovered The DØ from the great Wildlilife remix I put on one of my mixes, I will definitely keep my ears pointed in their direction.  For fans of Metric and Säkert! and New Pornographers, for sure.

The Head and The Heart - Winter Song:  Gorgeous folk pop that is right up there with The Tallest Man On Earth and Iron & Wine, both for it's earnestness and it's melodic joys.

The Shins - Sleeping Lessons (RAC Mix):  Sometimes all you need is to take an indie song and slap on a better bass beat....

World Inferno Friendship Society - Tattoos Fade:  There is a rollicking parlor rock feel to this song, but oh how I love the sentiment of the chorus even more.  Like Nick Drake meets Idiot Flesh.

Yuck - Georgia
Yuck - Holing Out
Yuck - Operation:  Their new self-titled album is bound to be one of the highlights of 2011, so get this album ASAP!
There is much entirely NEW here, but they mix in some of your fvaourites in new and exciting ways.  Dinosaur Jr., The Morning Benders, Best Coast and 90s grunge-era Sonic Youth are all referenced lovingly.  Highly recommended!

Another quick update before the weekend!  Lots of new music has been tickling my ears.
I've mostly been listening to György Ligeti and Harry Belafonte, but these ones are good too.  Promise.



Barbara Morgenstern - Blackbird
Barbara Morgenstern - Come To Berlin:  Barbara Morgenstern has always had a untouchable perch in the realms of electro pop and IDM.  Ceaselessly interesting and criminally overlooked, the new collection "Fan No 2" is a double CD of BM goodness, featuring the fun euro dance pop that will appeal to any fans of Kompakt, as well as the lush instrumentals that outdid most of Morr Music releases from the same period.  And hell, Annie Lennox (Eurtyhmics era) fans, too.

Body Language - Sandwiches (Alaska in Winter Remix):  The goofy 90s electro classic gets a mellow 21st rework.  Lovely.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - God Only Knows (Brian Wilson cover)
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - Vocal Chords:  The Horse Power EP is full of great pop fun!  We dropped a remix of a track from it earlier, but here are 2 more lovely nuggets, including an irresistible Beach Boys cover.

Freelance Whales - Hannah:  From the 2009 release Weathervanes, pop that is almost too saccarine, but just rides that edge ok, leaving that whisp of delight.  Oh yes, I went there.

Helios - The Evening Walk:  Helios always walked that path that Arovane first laid out, combining IDM with a few acoustic samples and a good wash of ambience.  From the 2009 album Unleft.

Lazydisco - On (Aphex Twin cover):  Ha!  It's always great when people cover Aphex Twin, and here's a great rendition on probably one of his best tracks ever.

LoveLikeFire - Stand In Your Shoes:  Reminds me of The Balconies, in a few ways.  Soaring rockin' girl pop!

Mi Ami - Harmonics (Genius Of Love):  New album, Steal Your Face!  Might immediately appeal to those that like Marnie Stern, but also for anyone in to Wolf Eyes or Ponytail.  A total aggro noisey mess of goodness.

Pretty Lights - I Can See It In Your Face:  sample-dense breakbeat that nicely straddles both the RJD2 and Bassnectar worlds.

Run Toto Run - This Is A Lull:  Epic electro-pop ala Bats For Lashes, except with the energy levels of The Gossip.

SL - Year Dot:  From the new album Kaleide.  One pile of bones?  WTF, what is this Blair Witch?

Starkey - Paradise ft Anneka
Starkey - Playing With Fire (Ital Tek Remix):  Space Traitor EP Vol.1 is craaaaaaazy good.  Starkey steps it up a notch and delivers some amazing tracks, and has some hot remixers in tow.

Sunday Girl - Four Floors (Diplo Remix):  Diplo mixes up the dubstep with some downtempo for this wonderful slinky groover.

Wick-it the Instigator - Follow The One:  The Black Keys get sampled and looped in short time, with this track off the new The Brothers of Chico Dusty.  It DOES make a fricking incredible beat...

Yellow Swans - Foiled
Yellow Swans - Limited Space:  The new album Going Places is totally intruiging.  It will appeal to fans of the indie noise cassette culture, post rock, sludge metal, and ambient drone.  It's like those, but even better.  Highly recommended.

Quincy & Zen Cuts Allstars - I Hear The Drummer (Tunng Edit):  Each time it gets bigger and better.  Ninja Tune XX was released as a deluxe 6 CD box set.  It's like unwrapping the bestest xmas present ever.  I grew up on the first Ninja Tune sampler Funkjazztical Tricknology, and oh how far they've come!
Here are some of my faves from the massive collection.  Timber is one of my favourite ninja cuts ever, and I love the rework.  Same with Summer's Gonna Hurt You.  Before Diplo went all dirty club, he did a few soulful downtempo cuts, and this was the bestest.  The Emika cut is awesomely deep, but we all know I just love it because it samples Metroid.
And of course the mega mix I Hear The Drummer, which sums up all of the label's brilliant karma and meshes it all together in Reader's Digest fashion.  As a music fan, you should be able to ID at least 60% of the songs within.  If you can't, get digging through the Ninja Tunes crates.

2.3 Children - Drunk In The Afternoon:  Uhhh yeah I just figured everyone neeeded to hear this.

DID - Another Pusher (These New Puritans Remix):  The first of two tastes of These New Puritans.  This one feels all slimey and gross and belching, but oddly irresistible.

Dirty Projectors - Ascending Melody:  Another great cut from the Expanded Edition of Bitte Orca, the 2009 classic.

Feist - Limit To Your Love (Live):  From the CD of the DVD document, "Look At What The Light Did Now".

jj - New Work
jj - Still:  From their new Kills mixtape, some of their funnest stuff since their No. 2 album.  Who can resist dreamwave vox over a Dre beat?

Lykke Li - Get Some (Beck Remix):  So excited for new Lykke Li this year!  This track just killlllls it.  Mike D also did a remix that's out there.  It's like Jon Spencer's Orange days all over again!  hell yeah.

Mogwai - Letters To The Metro
Mogwai - Rano Pano:  New Mogwai!   The album is "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will" and it's fresh for 2011.  Fans of the band will love it.  Fans of GY!BE will finally be able to cross over.  Fabulous instrumental musics.

Of Montreal - Famine Affair (Leonidas & Hobbes's Aftermath Remix):  Really unassuming, but this is a totally great plodder of a remix.

Sleigh Bells - Run The Heart (RUN With DRUGS) (Ensemble Economique REMIX):  Slowed down and mellowed out really works for Sleigh Bells.  They should totally have a dub remix album.  RELEASE THE STEMS!

The Rural Alberta Advantage - Stamp:  Rollicking pop off the brand new album Departing.

These New Puritans - Attack Music:  Filthy stomping goodness!   Eeeee love the dark reeds.

Toro Y Moi - Low Shoulder:  And we'll close on something a bit more bubbley and happy!  From the new album "Causers Of This".

µ-Ziq - Ease Up:  We're kicking things off with 2 blasts from the past!  2005's Ease Up was a classic for Paradinas, but he's always given us some jungley surprises of goodness over the years.

Bikini Kill - Reject All American:  The classic from the album of the same title!  Never go to a riot without it.

Congrorock - Babylon (Peodepitte ft Chronz) (RD Remix):  R/D is back with another incredible remix!  Not content with the mind-warping IDM stylee, he now mashes it up for this dancefloor killer.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. - Nothing But Our Love (Prussia Remix):  Something so perfectly 1980s lounge about that synth.  You could totally picture Phill Collins singing this after a PCP bender.  Crooning to the jello mold.  From the new album My Love Is Easy: Remixes Pt. 1.

Diamond Rings - All Yr Songs (GOBBLE GOBBLE's Wings for Eyeliner):  I wanted oh so hard to love Diamond Rings, but it took the real saviour of Canadian music, Gobble Gobble, to highlight all the right parts with pink and yellow.  From the remix collection GOBBL'd Volume 1 Tape.

Feed Me - Jodie (Radio Edit):  I was thinking to myself... What is the perfect way to transition from the nightclub to a Trecartin themed artstar party where we pour paint and sauces all over ourselves and stutter around on the floor?  Oh this'll do for now.

Gatekeeper - Storm Column:  GATEKEEEEEPER!  He used to do more generic dubstep stuff.  It was solid, but not quite as unique.  Now he's bakc with Giza, having watched one too many Italian horror films that he finally broke his brain and took his dubstep samples back and applied it to a dark cinematic electro framework. 
Whether it's 21st century Goblin or the best video game music ever, it's all awesome.

Gregory and the Hawk - Boats and Birds (Protohype Remix):  Cute and freezepoppish, and totally bouncey fun.

Raz Mesinai - Resurrections For Goatskin II:  Resurrections For Goatskin cameout on Tzadik (*swoon*) back in 2003, but I am just discovering it now.  Long recovered from his mediocre illbient days, Raz Mesinai has ended up as one of my favourite textural composers, mixing classic percussion with drones and other sounds.

The Decemberists - Dear Avery
The Decemberists - Don't Carry It All
The Decemberists - This Is Why We Fight:  HURRAY!  NEW DECEMBERISTS!  The King Is Dead is a pretty fabulous album.  Much more lowkey and straightforward than 2009's Hazards Of Love, many fans will applaud the return to form.  I really loved Hazards, and was hoping this would continue that thread, but it's still an incredibley satisfying Decemberists album, twangy slide guitar and all.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Mynabirds - This Will Be Our Year (Zombies cover)
The Mynabirds - Ways of Looking
The Mynabirds - What We Gained in the Fire:  The cover is of probably one of my favourite sentimental pop songs EVER.  It's not on the album, but the other 2 tracks are indeed from the brand new "What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood", which is low key fabulous.  A bit of rootsy folksy charm ala Be Good Tanyas or Sarah Harmer, or even some Cowboy Junkies vibes there, but it's tempered by some Neko Case style freshness and defintely deserves a good listen.

The New Pornographers - We End Up Together:  From 2010's album Together, oh I do love the bombast.  They are starting to remind me of that super sweet first Fiercy Furnaces album.

The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter (Zeds Dead Remix):  Ha!  Take that, zombie jagger!

Wye Oak - Civilian:  After their 2010 EP rocked my socks off and then back on again, I am super hyped for their new album Civilian.  The title single is leaked and sounds amazing.

Breakbot - Baby I'm Yours (Color Blaster Rmx):  Breakbot is always good for the elecro funk styleeeee

Dessa - Dixon's Girl:  Any track that starts with an oboe is well on its way to getting my panties off.  The structure here is at once wholly familiar, but every aspect is flipped in a playful way making this the funnest bit of contemporary R&B in a while.

Eliza Doolittle - I'll Be Your Pillow:  From the 2010 album "Pack Up", this sound ends up as a cross between Lily Allen and more traditional singer/songwriter stuff like Be Good Tanyas.  And who the hell doesn't want to be someone's pillow?

Errors - A Rumour In Africa (Gold Panda Remix):  Gold Panda hits us with another cold metal electroklink rework.

Friends Electric - Golden Blood (The Dirty Tees Rework):  Ecstatic, epic electro reworks!  About time we got back to these.

Goth-Trad - Sunbeam:  Some dubstep from the "OMG I really love Shackleton" world of things where we do just enough and not a handclap more.

Hauschka - Kamogawa
Hauschka - Sunny Mission:  I was really looking forward to the new album, "Foreign Landscapes", as I'd loved their prior album to death.  These two songs pulled me in, but the album as a whole didn't gel for me.

Horse Feathers - Drain You (Nirvana cover):  I have to admit I love sappy and romantic takes on Nirvana songs.  My childhood is ok with this!

Josh Ritter - Change of Time:  blah blah blah nothing to say!~

Mariage Blanc - Whatever You Say I Am:  A bit on the radio-friendly side, but it has the classic pop chops down pat.

Marty Party - BeBa:  Beba.  What is says on the tin.

MRK1 - Digital Orient:  has that good dubstep grind without getting obnoxious, and that sexy dubness without stumbling over it's own feet.

Painted Palms - All of Us:  I swear this is what Panda Bear would sound like if he wasn't singing with a fishtank on his head.  From the new Canopy EP.

Ramadanman - Don't Change For Me:  Anyone remember illbient?  Drum & Bass got so fucking boring that it spawned that short lived genre.  Looks like someone dusted off the old sample packs and is giving the goodness another spin.  No longer a frenetic pace, we of the post-dubstep world nod with approval.

Rubik - It's Not Really You:  What was I saying about slowed down DnB?  Oh yeah, things get sexier and sexier.

Siberian Railway - Host ft Nuria Tamayo
Siberian Railway - Naoko:  Clicky yummy IDM, for fans of Saycet, CocoRosie and MuM.

Sub Swara - Bend You:  From the new release Triggers, Sub Swara shows why they are on of the most exciting dubby sounds on the dancefloor.  Almost a bit of garage action on the bass synths there.

The Belle Stars - Clapping Song (Rat Salad Re-Edit):  I'd always been a fan of the original chant, so it's fabulous and a bit odd to have it sneak it's way in like this.

Tokyo Police Club - Favorite Coulour (PUNCHES Remix):  YEAH!  One of the best TPC songs finally gets a dancefloor rework.

Two Fingers - Keman Rhythm:  We'll finish things off with a dope track from none other than Two Fingers!

Admiral Fallow - Squealing Pigs:  The accent is oh so lovely, but it's wrapped up in a perfect little sing-a-long pop song, so it's all perfect.

Angus & Julia Stone - Hold On:  Shades of Lykke Li here, with a string section used to great effect.

April Smith and the Great Picture Show - Movie Loves A Screen:  A bit adult contemporary listening perhaps, but there is a fun little Kate Nash kind of groove going on here, or a goofier Emmy The Great thing.

ARP & Anthony Moore - Wild Grass I (for Arthur Russel):  a stunningly subtle chamber piece from the album Frkwys Vol. 3.

Don Johnson Big Band - Cocoa Cacao:  This heralds back to 2006, but I just discovered now.  Total ecstasy on that chorus, and great flute grooves.

Gobble Gobble - Nikki (I Am Not The-Dream cover):  Mmmmmm Gobble Gobble!  My favourite new find of 2010!  They kick off 2011 with a new single, the Secret 7", and we're all weak in the knees.

Heike Has The Giggles - Robot:  Bikini Kill sounds for the 2011 world!    An oddly titled band, with a track from the oddly titled album "Sh!"

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - River Like Spine:  Drone ambient off the new album Love Is A Stream.

Los Chicharrons - Ma Do Nar:  No no, not the Josh Martinez side project.  This one's even doper.

Mansions on the Moon - This Life (DJA  Mad Decent Remix):  The Paradise Falls albums was kind of a bust, but this track bumps in all the ways you'd expect a Mad Decent track to bounce.

Mar - Mar Variation, 1st Session:  From the 2010 album Mar Variations, a smooth slice of down-and-out soul.

Martian Gang ft Insight & Dagha - Got Skills Galore (Groovemanspot Remix):  This is from 2005, but I only recently heard the 12" that had this rare remixes on it, and I just loved it.

Meursault - Crank Resolutions
Meursault - William Henry Miller Part 1:  I haven't heard the full album, "All Creatures Will Make Merry", but these songs are amazing, giving me impressions of The Twilight Sad, but with more of an acoustic dingy cabin sort of feel to them.  OK, some Frightened Rabbit too.  And no, it's not just the accent!

Nosaj Thing - Light #1 (Take Remix):  2 of my favourite producers make out and give us this little groover as a memento!

Peter Wolf Crier - Untitled 101:  Not much to say here, quaint little folk pop.

Priors - What You Need (Hey Champ Remix):  I love the light discey synth and the bubblebass on display here.  Perfect pop achieved with great restraint and just having enough of everything, like an 70s pop funk groove.

Säkert! - Dansa, fastän
Säkert! - Riot:  From the 2010 album Facit.  Wow, lots of music in this update where I have no idea what they are saying.  But good music often transcends language boundaries, and these songs are truly awesome.

Sky Larkin - Kaleide:  Radio friendly grrl pop fun, ala The Pipettes.

The Big Pink - Velvet (Mount Kimbie Remix):  I never thought The Big Pink would get a slick bass remix like this, but leave it to the magic of Mount Kimbie to take something so poppy and fun and make it mysterious and alluring.

blog 2011/01/05 - and I awake and rub my eyes... and I have travelled in to the future!

It is truly a miracle!  The future!  Here it is, upon us!
Not moments ago you were in a drunken stupor, it being the innocent age of 2010, and lo', I say lo', you have awoken to the madness that is 2011.
Stockpile rations and arms yourself with zombie-stompin' boots, because the future waits for no one.

I have been doing my part.  Don't think that all of December I was merely working on the BEST OF 2010 lists and the holiday music post.  Oh no, there was still a regular operation of sifting sieving and scavenging for the best new sounds.
So much so, that there is a ridiculous backlog.
What this means is that you are getting a triple wammy of oversized updates.  Today, tomorrow, and probably again on Monday, I will be posting updates that flagrantly exceed my self-imposed "80 minutes only so they can like, burn it to one of those CD-R things for the car" rule. 
I can't be held down.

The future is swell, and not nearly as zombie-filled as we once feared!


A Band Called Quinn - Letting Your Light Shine:  Super sweet loungey pop from the new album Advent Calendar.  Totally takes me back to 90s-style pop ala Bran Van 3000.  A simpler era where rap stoners like Len could suddenly have a bubble-gum pop and music videos played on tv.  A time when children could laugh and play and "trip hop" wasn't a dirty word. 

Alessandro Bosetti - Laida and Mikel looking for rhymes.:  A totally seductive little number for voices and upright bass from the new album Zwölfzungen.  I have no idea what they are saying but oh my it kind of gets me all hot and bothered.

Amiina - Over and Again:  Like a hippier take on a MuM song!  From the album Puzzle.

Blackbird Blackbird - Little Respect:  OUt of the slightly seasick woozy-core scene comes Blackbirdx2, and I think this is the first track of theirs that I like as it is.  All of my other favourite tracks by them had remix work from someone else

Bossasaurus - Light Pollution:  This is a fun electro breaks song, and it's terribley disorienting since it includes a sample that sounds like I am getting a call on my bluetooth headphones.  Remember when people first started inserting default cell phone rings in to songs?  The future is a horribley cruel place feeled with lots of feelgood breakbeats.

Danny Byrd - Ill Behaviour ft I-Kay
Danny Byrd - Planet Earth:  Rave Digger is my favourite TOTAL jungle album since Venetian Snares dropped that proto-ragga madness.  Byrd has all the best parts of the big rave sound, the ragga samples, the '92 oldschool breakbeat joys, and the contemporary techstep compressor stack to make it all bust your fucking skull until rainbows bleed everywhere.

El Tigre - Quien Como Yo:   no no no, not "LE", it's "EL Tigre"!  Totally dope and bouncey.

Forest Swords - Rattling Cage:  When that witchhousey aesthetic bleeds in to indie rock, we get glorious little tracks like this.  It's like when IDM was mulling about, and people first decided to mix it with some live guitar.  Goodness abounds.

Frail Limb Purity - Ghostface Killah v. The Shirelles:  You all know my strict rules on mashups.  Must be TIGHT.  Must be in key.  Must be greater than the sum of the parts.  And most importantly, must MAKE ME SMILE.  Yesssss.

Fullness - Butterfish (Marlow Remix):  Butterfish is often billed as white tuna, but it's real name is escolar.  It is the most delicious thing in the ocean, and will make you excrete an indigestible waxy ester if you eat too much.  THAT IS AWESOME.

Japandroids - Younger Us:  Fabulous new single from Japandroids!  Again on the themes of being totally awesome party rockers dealing with their suddenly realized mortality.  A perfect lament for days slipping by far too quickly.

MJ Cole & Wiley - From The Drop:  MJ Cole gets so much friggin' right on this track, and Wiley manages not to sound like a total asshole, and keeps a dope flow just underneath the snappy beat.  A wicked wicked track.

Producer Snafu - Bowser's Cock:  Oh come on, don't tell me you never thought about it before.  I'm SURE there's some of it on deviantart...

Salem - Asia (Jokers Of The Scene Remix):  Ottawa boys who were doing the bloghouse thing and then the meh electro thing now try their hands at the witchhouse thing and end up sounding like epic prog rock monsters.

Shugo Tokumaru - Lahaha:  EEEEEEEEEEEEE!  I am soooo excited for the new Shugo Tokumaru album!  It will be called Port Entropy and this is a leaked preview track and omg omg omg omg!

Stephen Francis - All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover):  A fabulous take on my favourite LCD Soundsystem song ever.  oh so yummy.

Stupid Bastard - Hype Up:  1999 breakbeat madness!!!  And then it all falls deep in to mashy house business that sounds almost retro.

Styrofoam - Looking Glass Two Zero:  I didn't love the new album "Disco Synthesizers & Daily Tranquilizers" as much as I had hoped for, but I do like this track.

Sub Compression - When It All Comes Back (Vladimir Corbin & Peddy's Sunshine RMX):  I love tracks like this.  Totally enchanting creeper beats, downpitched vocals that aren't pretentious and trance you right out.  WIN.

The Bug - Catch A Fire ft Hitomi:  Released late in 2010, The Bug's Infected EP has some friggin' cold ass dopeness on it.  How did early 90s Tricky get ressurrected in to modern bass boogaloo?  Who knows, who cares.  We gots it good.

Young Circles - Lightning:  A great way to end off!   Like a somewhat bassier Yesayer, perhaps?  All gooood.

1) Music and art are essential for a developing society.
2) There is an ever-increasing amount of amazing new music to discover.
3) There is far too much good music for anyone to listen to mediocre music.
4) My friends are far too busy being beautifully brilliant forces in society.
Therefore, I will research and gather all of the greatest new music for them and share it with them in the most convenient ways possible.
Everyone else is more than welcome to come along for the ride.
