MP3 blog 2009/10/07

blog 2009/10/07 - Caitlyn's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.  MP3 blog version.

Owie.  I hurt.  I woke with a terrible charlie-horse and now my back is sore.  So, I might be a tad grumpy for this blog!

But that shouldn't spoil the fun, because there is some simply delicious work here.

Bat For Lashes - Use Somebody (Kings of Leon cover):  A beautiful and seductive pop number, as performed on BBC radio.

Bell - Magic Tape:  This track has a great cacophonous logic that just comes across as alluring and delicious.  Like CocoRosie mixing it up with Feadz, with Sufjan Stevens at the boards.  Great stuff.

Calvin Harris - Ready For The Weekend (Dave Spoon Remix):  Total party cheese, but undeniably good.  Dave Spoon does a good job of limiting the vocal presence, accentuating the glam-house drop.  As predicted, the mediocre album will have a few juicey remixes.

Dusk & Blackdown - Confusion:  Dusk & Blackdown have released a flurry of great singles in the past 2 years, and this is one of my favourites.  Sweet tablas programmed on dubstep bass, mixed in with loose Hindi vox.

Gnaw - Feelers:  As someone who doesn't really listen to metal, but listens to a lot of Japanese noise, it is rare tracks like this that have the texture and energy and total atmosphere to really suck me in.  Drama-queen noise metal at it's best.

Hey Rosetta! - A Thousand Suns:  These are from the Polaris short-listed Into Your Lungs, from 2008.   Great straight-up CBC-radio-friendly Can-con pop-rock hyphenated-words-goodness!
Hey Rosetta! - I've Been Asleep For A Long, Long Time:  There was much outrage among fans that they didn't win, but short-listed seems appropriate for sure.

jj - Ecstasy:  The 2009 album is "jj n° 2", and it has that lofi electropop aesthetic that Telepathe tried to capitalize on, but the songs here are much more coherent.
jj - My Love:  There is a bit of a sleepytime stoner vibe on here, but it all comes together quite tightly.   Recommended for fans of Beirut, Telepathe and Masha Qrella.

Kyza - Go (Bar 9 Remix):  An incredible remix work here, Bar 9 has been cleaning house in 2009.  Some grinding dubstep that doesn't move your hand to turn the volume down just a nudge.  Slamming.

Lusine - Baffle:  The new Lusine LP is "A Certain Distance" and it is quite remarkable.  Like the new Modeselektor, I wasn't in to the whole thing, but I am a DJ and have a hard time not just cherrypicking the highlights.
Lusine - Gravity  Wonderful IDM/minimal/electro, with a number of great guest vocalists on it.  Very much recommended, if you're a fan of Modeselektor, Morr Music, Styrofoam, etc.

Martina Topley Bird - Lying:  Another great track from the Quixotic album

Sufjan Stevens - Movement I, In The Countenance Of Kings:  The BQE is a modern-day Vangelis masterpiece, delivered by one of indie-rock's most surprising composers.
Sufjan Stevens - Movement III, Linear Tableau With Intersecting Surprise:  Lush and flamboyant orchestration and tight playing, but not the fun and stirring evocation Sufjan fans might be craving.  Either way, this album is the best contemporary classical roadway tribute album yet!

The Weather Station - March:  For some reason I think of Annie Lennox doing gothic barn-raising revivalist music.  Don't ask.
