blog 2013/10/30 - the world spits in your eyes and you think it's paying attention to you
Go to bed, internet. You're drunk: http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131030.zip
AU - Old Friend
AU - Solid Gold: I first heard AU with a crazy remix somene did of Solid Gold. And I've now confirmed that I realy love Both Lights, the proper full length, as well. It is bombastic and frenetic and quiet and meditative and all of that, all crammed in to one space. It comes at you like a giant concept album that willl appeal to anyone who puts on a Owen Pallet or Sufjan Stevens album and listens from beginning to end.
Bill Callahan - Small Plane (NPR garden version): Yes, this is Bill, in a garden, playing. Communing. Ascending.
Eskmo - 1996
Eskmo - I Just Want: The Language EP is just freaking BOSS.
Jackal - Bubblegum ft CRNKN: bubble gum BOOOOOOM
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - PonPonPon: The video made it famous, but the song itself stands alone. MASH THE PLACE UP!
Los Campesinos! - By Your Hand: This band is one of those where I always get the sense that people are fed up with them, and I'm not sure where that image comes from, but they just keep saying UFCK YOU and releasing brilliance on brilliance. I've always thought that these guys and Vampire Weekend should be forced to swap fame levels. For justice.
Menomena - Capsule
Menomena - One Horse: Is there irony that the album Moms reminds me of the band Girls?
Shearwater - Fucked Up Life: Another intruiging track from the new album Fellow Travelers.
Sun Glitters - Only You: There is a lulling simplicity to this so let it wash all over.
Team Doyobi - Art of Memorex
Team Doyobi - Definition: A bit more accessible than there works of a decade past, this is like the best parts of Daft Punk slowed down and made relevant again.
There Will Be Fireworks - Roots: Shimmering folk from The Dark, Dark Bright.
Times Neue Roman - So Many Females: Just ride that Cali Bass!
Toro Y Moi - Fax Shadow (Shlohmo Remix): I'm not a huge Moi fan, but oh HAI GUESS WHAT, I kinda sorta LOVE Shlohmo.
Victor Niglio - Jiggy ft Mr. Man: Holy hell jig man, all over the place, clean up that mess.
Yassou Benedict - Last Cicada: Send you to bed with this beautiful track from In Fits In Dreams.

MP3 blog 2013/10/22
blog 20134/10/22 - there is a secret entrance
if only you can believe in it: http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131022.zip
Aleksi Perälä - Magnetic Shield: From the album, Mental Union, I love this minimalist gong excursion.
Badawi - Evocation (Cex remix): A slightly older one, but my god I love when Badawi gets all Muslimgauze on the place.
Big Wave Riders - Waiting In The Wings: You and your friends like sing-a-long songs.
Bing And Ruth - And Then It Rained: Pulsing and breathey and it's that epic scene late at night from Backward Music Vol.1
Bjork - Mutual Core (These New Puritans Remix ft Solomon Islands Song): There always a lot to sift through when a new round of Bjork remixes swarms out, but the chanting + subbass win over on this one.
Claire - Games (Abby Rmx): It's a fabulous pop song, but oh it's chill bass would fit it in so many places. Dang lovely, AND 2 vocalists!
Crystal Castles - Untrust Us (Pause Music Mix): Strip out the intensity and rattle and give us the pounding communique we all deserve.
DJ Cutman - Marblemadnass
DJ Cutman - Red Soil
DJ Cutman - The Moon: BOOM, 3 of the greatest game soundtracks flipped and smoothed. Marble Madness, Super Metroid, Duck Tales, represent!
Fire Through The Window - Hey!: Waaaaay to short but so much fun while it lasts.
Glenn Jones - Going Back to East Montgomery
Glenn Jones - The Vernal Pool: My Garden State is an acoustic guitar opus that, if you find the right frame to engage with it, opens up expanses for you.
Jon Kennedy - A Sure Thing
Jon Kennedy - Drive By
Jon Kennedy - Organised Crime ft Kate Rogers: Filled with classic singles and great remixes, Strengthen The Roses is essential for downtempo fans of all stripes. Some great slices on there for breakbeat lovers.
Kelpe - Answered (Jon Phonics Remix): bass
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Homeless ft Sarah Mclachlan
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Shosholoza ft Lucky Dube, Bhekumuzi Luthuli, Hugh Masekela: ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo god, how can you say no to a 2012 redux of Homeless? Oh hells yes. A few shining standouts on the Ladysmith Black Mambazo & Friends album for sure.

MP3 blog 2013/10/15
blog 2013/10/15 - some times there is a cloud of terrible just crashing around
invested in the moment for too long: http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131015.zip
Battles - Sundome (EYE Remix): Since my formative years in the early 90s, I've been a total EYE fangirl. Even with a release with as mystifing purpose as a Battles remix album, I can always wash away the detreius and just chill with EYE and obliterate all structure.
Buck 65 - Dolores: Rich takes vocoder lessons from Bon Iver and produces this lovely little fusion jam for 20 Odd Years: Volume 4 - Ostranenie.
Chance The Rapper - Good Ass Intro ft BJ The Chicago Kid, Lili K., Kiara Lanier, Peter Cottontail: Acid Rap is refreshing in so many ways. It's got GREAT stuff going on, but then it also has a few dalliances in to hiphop assholery, dropping slurs against gays and women just as casual banter and yeah, some great stuff, but fuck you for that, Chance.
Charli XCX - You're the One (Blood Orange Remix): Dear lord, this is total pop ecstasy right here. Everything going on is just essential.
Chiddy Bang - Mind Your Manners ft Icona Pop: I guess it's Chiddy's thing, loop up a ridiculous pop hook and just go from there. Whatevs, it totally works here.
Chihei Hatakeyama - Algenib: Another drone slab from CH, this time from Norma.
DJ Hype - Dub Plate Fever: So there I was sifting through the entire Suburban Bass back catalogue and this one pops out to me and my god it's been YEARS, but oh that "jungle jungle" sample was all it took and boom you're back and it's almost 2 decades ago.
Gaslight Anthem - Hold You Up: Gaslight Anthem - Hold You Up
Gaslight Anthem - Skinny Love (Bon Iver cover): From a 10" released on Record Store Day, Gaslight Anthem show off their meditative calming side to great effect.
Helios - Every Hair on Your Head (Ben Boysen Remix)
Helios - Halving The Compass (Rhian Sheehan Remix): Here is a remix album I can dig in to, extended works for electronics and piano+guitar are always up my alley.
Joey Bada$$ - My Yout
Joey Bada$$ - World Domination: Like Chance, Joey is part of a crop of young rappers who have tonnes of astonishing talent and are really excitiing, if you can work around the daliances in to douchery.
LOL Boys - Changes (Anenon One Take Cover)
LOL Boys - Changes ft Heart Streets: I rarely put up 2 mixes of the same song, but Anenon stripped-to-the-horns version is so great not to pass on, and the original so lovely that what am I to do?
Shearwater - I Luv the Valley Oh: The new album is Fellow Travelers and while I am not in love with all Shearwater albums, there are always parts of it that are incredible and have to dive in regardless.
The Pink Mountaintops - Rock n Roll Fantasy: This goes back to 2004, and YES, it is the guy from Black Mountain and that is why it's so awesome.
Tic Tic Boom! - These Motions: There is a Matt & Kim level of cheerleader exuberance going on here.
Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party - Danger Love: With a name like that you're probably expecting some more radical speedbass type excursions, but nope, you get straight-up fabulous soaring pop.

MP3 blog 2013/10/08
blog 2013/10/08 - there's a bell ringing, signifying the end
shake that laffy taffy: http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131008.zip
Basia Bulat - It Can't Be You
Basia Bulat - Never Let Me Go: I have been a fan of BB since her first album, and I recently saw her a 4th time. She brought Evening Hymans and Rolf of The Acorn up on stage for backup vocals and it all created a transcendent few minutes. It was a "you had to be there" kind of thing. Her album Tall Tall Shadow is a fabulous folk whirlwind which strives to capture her live magic and is oh so close at achieving it. Highly recommended.
Hop Along - Laments
Hop Along - Get Disowned
Hop Along - Some Grace: Another track from Get Disowned appears wayback in this blog, but I listened to that post again and realized I had to get the full length album, and within discovered so much other great slow-burn emoangst fury. Recommended!
Janelle Monáe - Givin Em What They Love ft Prince
Janelle Monáe - I Want You Back (Jackson 5 cover): Oh hey we need a guest for this track. How about… PRINCE??? Oh my god amazing. The Electric Lady is out now to massive praise. I like Janelle a whole lot, but I want to love her even more. I love many of her songs and many things about her, but I just can't get in to any of her albums as a whole. It was the same thing with Frank Ocean: lots of mindblowing cuts, totally in love with the individual, but I keep skipping over tracks that I just can't groove on.
Joy O - Knock Knock
Joy O - Sicko Cell: Using a clever SUPER SECRET alias, Joy Orbison serves up some of my favourite bouncy bangers.
Julia Holter - Goddess Eyes II: Hot tip producers: Check these ecstasy-inducing vocals and remix this shit for 15 minutes.
Le1f - Airbending
Le1f - Pocahontas ft Kitty Pryde: Fly Zone is a bit all over the place, but it's got a tonne of fun in it.
Punch - The Chase: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand before you know it, it's GONE!
Rhye - One Of Those Summer Days (Felix! Edit): a moist summer morning jam stretched out as things start to evaporate
Sandro Perri - Romeo Heart (Slight Return): Digging in to Perri's catalogue, I scooped out the great little gem of Plays Polmo Polpo, where he revisits his old electronica project tracks with new eyes.
Shigeto - Detroit Part 1: Dope downtempo from the new album No Better Time Than Now.
Trim - Album Skits
Trim - Thoughts: I only recently sifted through Monkey Features but oh fuck there is some SLAMMING grime ish here. Love love love the playful beats.
Tsunami Bomb - Planet, Schmanet, Janet: The cutest of all renditions from the Rocky Horror Punk Rock Show compilation. I'm not the hugest RHPS fan but oh the re-interpretations!

MP3 blog 2013/10/01
blog 2013/10/01 - there is pain in it all
This week, and forever at the top: http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131001.zip
Arcade Fire - Reflektor ft David Bowie: Arcade Fire's back and the Talking Heads are once again king. Kick out the cocaine disco grooves. Oh and hey, David Bowie? Woah.
Bat For Lashes - We Found Love (Rihanna cover): Finally, the breathy drama of it can be fully realized!
Bill Callahan - Javelin Unlanding (Expanding Dub)
Bill Callahan - Winter Road (Highs in the Mid-40's Dub): This is how Callahan serenades you on your way to the afterworld.
Cassie - Me & You (CRNKN Remix): So many remixes of this classic, and this is my favourite one yet.
Elvis Costello and The Roots - Sugar Won't Work: 2 great tastes you never thought would go together! Wise Up Ghost And Other Songs out now.
Guided By Voices - Class Clown Spots A UFO: Ecstatic pop where the opening lines take me right to TMBG's John Henry album, and that sets the bar right high.
Lucas Hicks - Greenest Summer: This is from the album Slower, and has that Wavvers fuzz with the Girls emotional package, I guess like a modern Eric's Trip sound?
Maxxi Soundsystem - Regrets We Have No Use For ft Name One (Matthew Herbert Remix): I'll immediately dive in to anything Herbert has touched, but oh my the song title was truly what brought me here and hey there are blankets and I have decided to stay.
Ms Mr - Hurricane (CHVRCHES Remix)
Ms Mr - Think Of You (RAC Remix): Insanely good pop. Textbook great. All of your favourite sonds with a voice reminiscent of The Gossip. It's just great. Highly recommended.
Murcof & Philippe Petit - Pegasus: Pieces like this give me such shivers. I love gurgled electronics sitting on par with melodic chamber instrumentals, swirling together in a psychedelic incantation. I haven't heard the new album "First Chapter" yet but if this is the masthead for it, I'm in.
Nine Inch Nails - Copy of a: So apparently there was this guy named Trent Reznor and he was like, THERE, at the start of the internet and made some famous usenet postings or something? Anyways, he wallowed in obscurity for a few decades, did some awesome background work for Aaron Sorkin dialogue, and has an album out now. We wish him well and hope he can make a name for himself, he sounds very promising!
Scott Walker - 'See You Don't Bump His Head'
Scott Walker - Tar: Bish Bosch is a singular musical world untouched by any reality you have known before. It is all the mythology and symbolic density of The Swans rennaissance, if instead of an industrial blues background he had a baroque opera opera, then fell in a vat of mutagen. This will not be for everyone, for the adventurous it is an untouchable work of capital A Art.
Sleigh Bells - Bitter Rivals: New single tones down the crunch, ups the pop, and I love it all the same.
The Julie Ruin - Cookie Road: Run Fast, out now. Welcome back.
