Daedelus - My Beau ft Erika Rose and Paperboy:  Shocking, simply shocking!  Daedelus, producing something so damn smooth and slick and almost... dancefloor friendly?  Woah.  King of the quirky beats still maintains some odd bass squelch, but the RnB here is ready for the primetime.

Debbie Neigher - Home:  I don't normally go for typical jazz vocals, which this reminds me of at first, but then it gets all folksy and whimsical and then BAM, that chorus swoops in like a sip of a wine you've never quite tasted before.    From the self-titled new album.

DJ Rob 3 - Township Funk:  The CLASSIC South-African dance stormer gets my favourite re-flip.    No muss, no fuss, no nonsense.

Emmy The Great - A Woman, A Woman, A Century Of Sleep:  Emmy's songs are the diaries of a drama-rich life and certainly not everyone's cup of tea.  The new album is Virtue and slide this song alongside 24 and We Almost Had a Baby for my favourite little bits emotional tourism.

ill.Gates - Eggplantation (Knowa Knowone's Playa Sunrise Remix)
ill.Gates - That Look ft Niko:  ill.Gates has been blowing shit up left and right, sometimes being the modern day pinch-hitter for the likes of Amon Tobin, other time dipping in to his rich history of funky breaks.  First track here is off Autopirate Remixed and the second from the Schmunday School EP.  Tonnes of new stuff always seem to be coming down the pipe, so keep an eye open for this guy.

Jay-Z & Kanye West - Gotta Have It:  Another hit from Watch The Throne, short and sweet.

Jihae - Best Thing:  From 2008's Elvis Is Still Alive, smokey and reminiscent of Aimee Mann.  Super sweet.

Kastle - I Know:  Sexy stepper bass for all!

M83 - Midnight City (Alcala Remix):  New M83 album out soon!  In the meantime, let's enjoy the synthpop excess of the new remixes single.

Nguzunguzu - Wake Sleep:  I've been hyping Nguzunguzu for a while now, and oh look, he rocks it hard again.  Anyone remember that vocal sample?  Maybe sound kind of like a particular 80s house tracks?   HMMMMMMM?  So good.

Possimiste - The Flight of Lulu:  Musicbox IDM is a pleasure that everyone needs to enjoy. 

RAC - Double Dragon Stage 1 (RAC Karl Kling Mix)
RAC - Duck Huntin' (Terrible Shot) (RAC Karl Kling Mix)
RAC - Mario Kart 64, Koopa Troopa Beach (RAC Mix):  RAC, the undisputed gods of remixing pretty much everything, blow shit up on the new Nintendo Vs Sega 2 album.  please give these people money.

Radiohead - Reckoner (Julianna Barwick Remix):  Barwick loads up on echo fx and looper pedals, and takes her gear rack to this Radiohead track which ends up sound more like a cover than a remix.

Stricken City - Some Say:  An oh so very British take on Vampire Weekend, perhaps?  From the new album Losing Colour.

The Morning Benders - Last Night (The Strokes cover):  Meh, what are you gonna do?  How can you even think to hate on this???

TV On The Radio - Will Do
TV On The Radio - You:  I thought the last TVOTR album was a bit 'meh', and I was shocked it got all the accolade that it did.  At least with these 2 new tracks from Nine Types Of Light, I can assuredly say "yes indeedy, I do like this."

Wu Tang & Jimi Hendrix - House Of Flying Daggers :  TAKE A SOUND!  TAKE WU-TANG!  COMBINE!  There have been a massive amount of projects like this coming out.  They are simultaneously love letters to the source material and to the Wu-Tang acapella ouvre.  This album is great for any one that loves Hendrix and Wu-Tang.  Seriously.  I'm not being saracastic...  I'm just Wu-tang-ed out.  *le sigh*  A gal needs some space, I can only handle so much wu in one year.

Björk - Virus (Them Jeans Remix):  Any DJ in the 90s will tell you, Bjork changed the game.  No other artist sought out remixes more ferociously than the Icelandic one, everything from downtempo to breakcore to house to ambient to techno etc etc etc it was all there in the million+1 limited edition 12"s.  So of course now is the time, as happens before all new Bjork albums officially come out, that the remixes flood over our naked bodies!

Blanck Mass - Chernobyl
Blanck Mass - Weakling Flier:  "Wall Of Casios" was often used to describe Wyndham Hill records, but the aesthetic has been giving voluminous chorus and reverb pedals, some lowend filters, and a "fuck you I'm the real Goblin" attitude.  I wasn't in to the album as a whole, but the new self titled record is a must for fans of Vangelis, arpeggiator psych, and new-age-with-attitude.

Coss - Burn It Down:  From the new 'Before I Awoke', this guy isn't opening up new territory, but more retreading familiar sounds in style.  For fans of that Rawkus sound.

Dillon Francis - Beautician 2.0:  Synths-ahoy!  This is the way I like my electro.  Clean, exceptionally produced, and full exposition of what one can do with a DAW.  These are the lessons of 8-bit video game music brought to fruition.

Eleanor Friedberger - My Mistakes
Eleanor Friedberger - Owl's Head Park:  Yes, the voice does sound familiar!  IT IS INDEED the woman from Fiery Furnaces, and she's still as quirky as ever.  Like this year's PJ Harvey album, you might not instinctively be drawn to it, but yields a pile of awesome.  OK, this is not quite as good as the Harvey album, but "Last Summer" is an achievement in modern oddball pop music.

Holy Other - Touch:  Dubstep slowed down a tad!

Icona Pop - Manners:  Hmmm sounds remarkably like Alex Winston! 

Lil B - Game
Lil B - Unchain Me:  So yeah, guy pisses off hiphop world by titling new album I'm Gay.  That's kind of funny.  And the response, of course, terrifying.  Dear angry hiphoppers:  fuck you douchebags.

Mexicans With Guns - Jaguar:  We dropped some MWG before, but besides that time this is my next favourite track off of Ceremony.  If you're a Buraka Som Siesta fan, this will definitely be up your alley.  Lots of electro, some great verses, a big hodge-podge of party-time.

Porcelain Raft - Talk To Me (Pierce & Pierce's Epilogue Remix):  Low and subtle, the way to go!

Sea Oleena - Southbound:  Gorgeous restrained pop.

The Jezabels - Endless Summer:  OMG total ecstatic indie rock.  From the new album Prisoner.

The Weeknd - Rolling Stone
The Weeknd - The Zone:  This group is really hit and miss.  Thursday is a bit more hit, but still I am only in to half the tracks.  Kudos for bringing something new to the table though.

Washed Out - Before:  Within And Without didn't really grab me except for a few tracks, and this is definitely one of my faves.

blog 2011/08/30 - the exhaustion creeps in and you know you've done OK


Well, I did it!  I finally managed to catch Colin Stetson live, and it was awesome, and I now have a signed copy of his amazing new album on my record wall.
All it took was having an excruciatingly exhausting 15 hour day of Ottawa Pride activities and that included me performing twice. 
Totally worth it.

Check him out while you can.  The pieces are very difficult, the physically massive, and the strain on his (well-toned) body quite evident.  I don't think he'll be able to perform like this in 5 years from now, so enjoy his current work while you can.

Anyways, 'tis a new week, 'tis a new update!



Air France - It Feels Good To Be Around You:  Super sweet pop music mixed with the best of modern hipster beats and chillwavey production.  Amazing.

Archie Pelago - Prospect Dub:  SAXOPHONE & DUBSTEP, 4-EVA!

Barn Owl - Turiya:  An amazing pulsing instrumental rendering from the new album Lost in the Glare.

Earth - Old Black:  We dropped another track from Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light I way back at blog20110609, but here's another slowed down instrumental cowboy soundtrack wondertune.

Girls In Trouble - We Are Androgynous:  The vocal range here is astounding and delightful.

Gramatik - Like You Do
Gramatik - While I Was Playin' Fair:  Grammatik does full-spectrum productions that are produced like a brick house, and he does them well.  Album after album of solid banger beats, and now Beatz & Pieces Vol. 1 gives us more of the same:  quality snappy production, like the antithesis to mid-90s Madlib.

Inmontauk - Piroxilina
Inmontauk - Uno:  This goes back to 2008, but here are 2 great shimmering examples of peak ambient idm wonderfullness.  From the Isla EP.

Intimate Stranger - Nighttime:  Like a cross between 90s girl punk and Lily Allen.  For reals.  From the album Under.

James Blake - Lindisfarne:  The video single, combines parts 1 and 2 from the LP together.

James Vincent McMorrow - We Don't Eat:  I love the epic size of the emotions in this song.  From the album Early In The Morning.

Muslimgauze - North Africa Is Not So Far Away:  This digs back to 1997, but pretty much everything modern being done with bass can be unearthed in this guys post-mortem archive of releases.

Salem - Till The World Ends (Britney Spears cover):  Does it count as a cover if you're sampling the whole song and just kinda slowing it down?  Ahh whatever, it's still awesome and has the glib sort of childishness that you expect from Witch House.

Southerly - Suffer:  I really dig the structure of this track, it really draws me in.  From the new album Youth.

Thao & Mirah - Little Cup
Thao & Mirah - Squareneck:  I wanted this album to be total pure bliss, but alas it is only REALLY GOOD.  Of course it opens with an amazing collab featuring Tune-Yards, and really how can you maintain energy after that?  But it is filled with magic and anyone in to Thao or Mirah or Tune-Yards will really love this.

The Wild Flowers - Parchman Farm:  Such jolly good fun!  After sitting in my folder for months unlabeled, I finally found the title.  Smile, motherfuckers, summer's over.

Jay-Z & Kanye West - Otis:  Brand new single from the hot new collab album.  Of course you knew this was going to happen.

Knowing Looks - Abandoned Skip:  Hot steppa action!  Get yer hot steppa action here!  Extra clicks and wooshes!

Mondkopf - The Song Of Shadows:  The new album is Rising Doom and here we have a dense slab of churning beats with a high pitch sound that really reminds me of Digital Underground.

Nexus Petrol - Le Mantra Des Fourmis:  Finally, we are seeing the IDM and post-dubstep aesthetics merge in to a concrete whole.

Paul Simon - Rewrite
Paul Simon - The Afterlife:  First, let's remember this dude is probably in his 70s.  And he's amazing.  The album, So Beautiful Or So What, isn't a perfect gem, but there are more than a few glorious moments on it.  Primarily, Simon's ridiculous guitar playing.  Man can this guy pluck.

I keep my albums sorted in to 33 different genre folders.  Some are somewhat specific ("IDM"), some are catch-alls, vaguer... ("Rock - Harder").

The latest genre folder to be created? "Early 20th century"

Abigail Washburn - City Of Refuge:  From the new album City of Refuge, I love the energy and urgency of this track.

Black Eagle Child - Families Get Together
Black Eagle Child - The River's Course:  The new album Lobelia is full of down-home instrumentals and wonderful arrangements.  If you used to be all sludge rock and post-rock and then discovered how awesome Earth are, then this would be your next logical progession in life.  And if you're already there, well, this band won't replace your hard-on for The Dirty Three, but it's still a darn good album.

Black Fabio - Black Fabio ft J. Moore:  Sick sick beat, great flow, total package.

Dark Mean - Smoke Lake:  Contemporary indie rock from the self-titled album, for fans of Sloan... and fun.

DJ Fresh - Louder ft Sian Evans (Flux Pavilion & Doctor P Remix):  Oh so anthemic, I couldn't reist.

Ohbijou - Niagara:  New track from the upcoming Metal Meets!  OMG I AM SO EXCITED NEW OHBIJOU THIS IS THE SOUND OF ME GOING SQUEE:   SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

The Barettas - Black Sheep:  We last dropped some Barettas back in blog20110317, and here's another track of rawkus bar-brawl music.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Heart In Your Heartbreak:  The new album Belong didn't groove me too much, but I liked it more than their debut.  But here is the real killer track on it.  Totally indulgent 80s pop grooves.

Björk - Crystalline:  New Bjork single.  NUFF SAID.  New album soon...

Bright Archer - Hidden Systems:  Classic singer/songwriter pop from the long-tread tradition, expertly accomplished and perfectly delightful. 

Frida Sundemo - I Was Surrounded:  More amazing female pop bliss.

Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard - Slogans:  "'Em Are I" (ooo clever I see what you did there) came out in 2009, but I just found this now.  This is the same guy that put out the brilliant cover of End Result, and it has a similar hypnotically enchanting quality.  A certain niavete that you can't help but go with, like Daniel Johnson.

John Lamonica - Wolf Protestor:  Whispy multi-tracked folk goodness.

Nguzunguzu - Mirage (Brenmar Remix):  Nguzunguzu is fast becoming one of my favourite producers of 2011.

Nicolas Jaar - Hage Chahine ft sax by Will Epstein
Nicolas Jaar - Materials:  SPEAKING OF AMAZING PRODUCERS OF 2011, GUHHHHHHHHH....

Noah and the Whale - Blue Skies (The Twelves Remix):  The Twelves hit it on the head again.  They have consistently put out the best pop remixes for a few years and are the shiny happy face of the joy that electronic music can bring. 

Painted Palms - I Will Truck (Dirty Projectors cover):  People get points for even TRYING to cover The Dirty Projecttors, triple bonus points for doing such a damn good job.

Papercutz - Do Outro Lado Do Espelho (Taylor Deupree Remix):  Papercutz first found there way around here on the blog20090809 update, but LO'!  A Taylor Deupree remix.  What?  My microtonal ambient superstar crush is remixing?  It's a shock I know, but it is totally lovely.

Patrick Wolf - The City:  I posted a remix of this way back when, but the remix is just so darn good.

Substance B - Dora Au Collège Fou Fou Fou:    HEY WHO REMEMBERS DRILL N BASS?  Well fuck you, I do and those were damn good times.  Soooo goooood.

Action Bronson - The Madness:  Did you ever think "I love Ghostface, he's oh so skilled, but he is SUCH a doucebag.  Why can't he rhyme about something awesome, like food?"  Then ACtion Bronson is your dream come true.  He's ace on the mic, and apparently saving up for gourmet cooking classes.  Dude likes food, and I think that's fucking awesome.   The beats are so fun, the rhymes are so tight, it makes it easy enough to glide past any ignorant ish he says.  One of the best hiphop releases of 2011.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Arcade Fire - Culture War
Arcade Fire - Speaking in Tongues ft David Byrne:  New Arcade Fire single!  And thank goodness they unlocked the secret achievement:  Get drunk, wake up naked in studio, find David Byrne there for some reason.  Pro skills, baby.  Pro skills.

Babe Rainbow - Greed ft Yung Clova of G-Side
Babe Rainbow - Set Loose:  The witch-house roots sounds continue to diminish in the world of dark electronica, and that is a good thing.  Producers find their footing and are blowing me away with an excitement that reminds me of the dawn of Ninja Tune.  Great stuff here, check the brand new Endless Path EP for moody electronica goodness.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich - Don't Go Slow:  After all the sweaty action above, let's get down to some lovely folk, from the new wonderfully evocative album titled "Last Smoke Before The Snowstorm".

Bogatzke - So This Is Distance:  Soothing synthy IDM from the Ulrich Schnauss school of long attacks and progessive developments.

Butterflies On Strings - What Did John Stuart Mill Say Again:  Phil Collins?  When did you start an indiepop band?  Good on you!

Flux Pavilion - I Can't Stop:  Back to some crazy dubstep with some of the fresest synth tweaking this side of 2011.

Grimes - Vanessa:  This track coverse so many stylistic bases, there has to be something for you to love!  The squeaky voices, the dark synths, the lulling pop, chugging electropop beat...  come on!

Kina Grannis - White Winter Hymnal (Fleet Foxes cover):  The classic track gets a faithful female rework.

Little Scream - Boatman
Little Scream - Cannons:  I heard many good things about "The Golden Record", but in the end I couldn't get in to it entirely.  I like these tracks, but check the whole thing out if you're a Veda Hille fan, for reals.  Quiky indie fun.

Macklemore - Vipassana (Ryan Lewis Remix):  Earnest raps don't hold up too well on repeated listens.  Macklemore has tight flow and good writ, but often lacks the humour and twists of his idols (Sage Francis and Amosphere obviously) to keep you coming back.   So maybe not for every day listening, but on occassion The VS. Redux will be the perfect record to go back to.  Beats based off riffs from Beirut and Antony & The Johnsons?  Solid.  Rhymes and flow?  Definitely.  Everyone wishing he would drink again?  yup.

Making Friendz - Situation:  Spunk from 60s girl-bands with the pop formlaties of modern garage, pulled off very well.

Mazes - Vampire Jive:  From "A Thousand Heys", this one is short, fun and a near perfect pop distillation.

Ryan Francis - Etudes For Piano, I. Digital Sustain
Ryan Francis - Moonlight Fantasy, VII. Reverie
Ryan Francis - Wind-Up Bird Preludes, I. Overture:  SOLO PIANO YO, IT'S THE NEXT HOTTEST BIGGEST THING EVARRRRRRRRRR.  CHECK THE BLOGS FOR THE LATEST AND GREATEST PHAT SOUNDS OF.... yeah ok I don't listen to a lot of solo piano.  But I near religiously give everything I see from Tzadik a quick sift.  And wow.  Just wow.  The piano WORK on "Works For Piano" here seems barely human.  And not in a "oh I'm grumpy Stockhausen and I hate my pianists so I will force them to grow a third hand to play atonal chords" garbage.  But in a way that melds gorgeous dramatic playing with the uncanny voice in the back of your mind that doubts if this is done by a human.  *checks liner notes*  Yup, only one pianist, Vicki Chow, is listed.  Recommended for fans of classical and contemporary music.

The Flaming Lips with Neon India - Is David Bowie Dying:  I haven't really been an ethused fan of Flaming Lips since the 90s, what with their devoid-of-critical-analysis & politics-free safe-for-straight-white-people psychedelia (redundant much?).  But I like this release.  There, I said it.  I feel dirty.  The Flaming Lips with Neon Indian is a mishmash of sound-building sessions that come together for me.  Check it.

Toro Y Moi - Freak Love (Freddie Joachim Remix):  Toro gets drowned down by the crushing waves of beats, but tis a worthy sacrifice for the good of the crew.  yar.

MP3 blog 2011/08/05

blog 2011/08/05 - because I've never really been one for procedure and measure.


First, a massive thanks goes out to: James B from Tokyo who sent me a wonderful little book by Maurizio Cattelan. 
If you don't know him, he's an Italian artist who creates some of the most hilarious artworks and can boast the craziest of accomplishments.
His career is basically a biting piss-take of the art world itself, but without the bitter cynicism and disdain of someone like Damien Hirst.
He has the diligence, practice and humour of Tom friedman with a flaunting merry prankster attitude. 
He is responsible for sculpting many dead horses, ana elephant under a blanket, forcing galleries to dig up their floors to display his work, forcing curators to dress up in bunny outfits to display his work, having meteorites hit the pope (and dude it Italian, yo), etc.
My favourite was when he hijacked the big-wigs from the Venice Bienalle and drove them to a garbage dump where he set up a full-size HOLLYWOOD sign above it, and then served a decadent feast of champagne and caviar. 
It even surpasses those guys in the 80s that did an exhibit that was basically racist and douchey, and then announced their return to the art world with a large sculpture that was just a large mirror covered in cocaine.
Cattelan.  You should all definitely check him out.

Anyways, back to the music.   And really, I think I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to release things on a Friday, but fuckit, yr on my time now.


Alex Winston - Locomotive (Jaybird Remix):  It might seem goofy, but I've been dropping SisterWife wherever I can, and it delights me to find more of her stuff getting the 21st century bass flip.

Andy Stott - Execution
Andy Stott - North To South:  CRANK THAT SUBWOOFER.  Holy shit people, I am not sure if it's an album or an EP, but the release "Passed Me By" is blowing my mind.
Gone are the days of abstract dub where you could just poop reverb on a click track.  This here is precise and gloriously dark and spooky.  Highly recommended.

Bellows - Handcut 05:  Remember back when you were making out in the basement and Denzel + Huhn's Time Is A Good Thing was on the hi-fi?  Those were good times, and you can dive in to that fuzzy nostalgia with this here new LP "Handcut".  Perfectly subtle in a way that will never bust its illusions, and wonderfully hypnotic.  Recommended for ambient and soundart fans.

Dirty Gold - Overboard
Dirty Gold - Quiet Life:  The Roar EP is a near-perfect nugget of pleasant indie rock.  I can't wait until a full length.

E-Dubble - Be A King:  MPC2000s are long gone, and now you can immediately hear when people are slapping default Beat Repeats on a track in Ableton, but still this track is hot.  And on PJ Harvey, no less!

Elite Gymnastics - Here, In Heaven 2
Elite Gymnastics - Omamori 2:  No, I won't write your stupid name with the extra stupid spaces.  Stupidface.
These are from the chopped and screwed version of the EP, same tracks, more fuckery.

Finley Quaye - Even After All:  This goes back like a decade and a half, but I just stumbled on it randomly.  So very subtle and ingeniously smooth.

Ghostface Killah & Max Tannone - Danger 500
Ghostface Killah & Max Tannone - Make It N.Y.:  Yes yes, Ghostface is a bit of a dick.   But he spits tight and the premise here really works.  Tannone flips Afro-Funk classics for a rambunctiously fun album.  Highly recommended if you like Wu-tang stylings and/or afro funk.

Iròi - Usual Pop Line (Populous Remix):  Electro pop needs more finger snaps~~!!!

J Mascis - Is It Done:  I STILL have not heard the new LP "Several Shades of Why", but I was passed this other track from the Dinosaur Jr. frontman and again, I am very impressed.  This guy will go on to be the next Neil Young.

J Rabbit - aMorejo:  Again, no idea what is going on here, but it's fucking beautiful.  The whole experience of it reminds me of the most heartfelt tracks from Pizzicato Five.

Phil Cook and His Feat - Ballad Of A Hungry Mother:  Nothing but smooth and gorgeous insturmental pickins....

Phoenecia - Frendano:  I barely remember Demissions...  but hey, we have an obvious trend.  If you were a turn-of-the-century IDM musician you either A)  gave up and had children  B)  started singing  or C)  started doing abstract sound scapes.
These are all rather awesome choices.

Seekae - Gnor:  Speaking of turn-of-the-century IDM...

Taylor Deupree - Journal:  And we'll leave you with someone who was never a turn-of-the-century IDM musician, and who has only ever given us the most blissful of soundscapes!  From the amazing new EP Journal.

YOU HEARD?  SO FUCKING GOOD.  GET IT NOW.

Breakbot - Fantasy ft Ruckazoid (Video Village Remix):  Stripped down Michael Jackson pop grooves.  Surprising restraint for ultimate seduction effect.

Cass McCombs - The Lonely Doll:  Sedate campfire folk, "Wit's End" stays true to 70s melodic folk.  It's not quite grabbing me, but this track is a winner.

Friends - Friend Crush (Phone Tag Mix):  The vocalist reminds me of the woman from The Concrets, but with some more uptempo sleepy beats.

Hospital Ships - Love or Death:  This track reminds me of the old 90s "Alternative" comps on DGC.  It's dripping with nostalgia of that era where Weezer were emerging and Flaming Lips went pop, and perfectly done.

Jill Barber - A Wish Under My Pillow:  It's hard to hear ukulele without thinking "hipster cliche", but oh when that oboe comes in you know she is totally sincere and fully committed to the astute charms of a century ago.  New album is "Mischievous Moon", but I haven't heard it all yet.

Jürgen Müller - Sea Bed Meditation:  From the new album "Science of the Sea", we have so lo-fi computer xylophone ambience action.

Man Man - Dark Arts
Man Man - Knuckle Down:  Life Fantastic is no Six Demon Bag, but hey, nothing else is and will ever be again, so let's get over it.  It doesn't grab me entirely, but 50% of it is exactly what you are looking for, so def pick it up if you are a fan.

Mitten - All That I've Got:  Bouncy electro pop from "See You Bye".

Octane & DLR ft TMT - Red Tape:  Hot on the heels of the crunchy bass of Eskmo and Amon Tobin, we have a new wave of mutant dubstep I hereby dub: bassfetish.

O'Death - Howling Through
O'Death - Pushing Out:  With a name like O'Death, you'd expect pure and traditional folk.  It covers some of that territory, but slips in to some slightly more frenetic and poppy sounds ala The Dodos as well.  The new album Outside is pretty darn swell.

Pusha T - Trouble On My Mind ft Tyler, The Creator:  I am just waiting for Tyler to come out with the dopest album of 2012 just called "Cocksucker", with his mug smiling on the cover and all like "WHAT!"

Rhys Chatham - Outdoor Spell:  The new album Outdoor Spell is hypnotic and enchanting, but in a totally beguiling way that is a vast departure from the Branca-ian guitars of past.  Highly recommended for fans of avant jazz and Terry Riley.

Sleep 8 Over - Casual Diamond:  Whispy nighttime lullaby sleeptown pop grind.

The Irrepressibles - Forget The Past:  OK, for certain this is for fans of Antony & The Johnsons.  And I like to think the lyrics are "Nomi!  Nomi!".

Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed:  Indie dreampop, from the new LP "Within and Without".

Of Monsters And Men - Little Talks:  yes.

The Horrors - Still Life:  The new album is Skying and it sounds cleaner than before.  Also, Morrissey.

The Very Best & Cee-Lo - What Part Of Forever
The Very Best & Rusko ft Vocal Slender & African Boy - Africa To California Anthem:  SUPER MOM.  Seriously, that's the name of the new album dropped on mother's day.  so awesome.  And yes, it's amazing.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, because you can't beat the price of free.

The Wailin' Jennys - All The Stars
The Wailin' Jennys - Storm Comin':  Much of the new album "Bright Morning Stars" is a bit too adult-contemporary folk for me, but if you like your folk smooth and earnest, it might be for you.  But I love these 2 songs.

Wugazi - Last Chance For The Clientele Kid:  Wu mashups abound!  Wu-Tang meets Fugazi.  Sound like it doesn't work?  Well, it doesn't quite.  A for effort, but only a few standouts on it.  Go grab it for free and sift yourself.  Maybe if I hadn't heard the Ghostfunk album first...?

Black Mountain - Lucy Brown
Black Mountain - Shelter:  So I recently discovered this 7" from 2008 that I hadn't heard before.  Turns out, this is some of my favourite Black Mountain stuff ever.  I fucking love it.   And who can't relate to their parents finding their stash?

Florence & The Machine vs Carbon Based Lifeforms - Cosmic Lifeforms:  A surprisingly good mash!  90s techno-lite ambience mixed with Florence for a smooth-yet-epic late night chiller.

Half Japanese - Firecracker
Half Japanese - This Could Be The Night
Jad Fair - Dead Men Walks:  Epic.   Simply epic.  The new 3 CD collection "Beautiful Songs: The Best Of Jad Fair" is a history lesson and challenge and total indulgence.  So so so good for those of us that grew up with atonal avant jangley outsider rock.  A total oddball classic.

Horse Feathers - Belly of June
Horse Feathers - Thistled Spring:  Don't immediately dismiss it because of the earnestness, because that becomes part of it's charm!  From "Thistled Spring", the production is lush and rollicking and tender.

Kodak to Graph - I Keep Holding On:  Sugar coated Jackson 5 chopped and looped for your ecstasy.

Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer - Reannounce
Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer - Recat:  The new album is "Re:ECM" and I have to admit, I feel like I am supposed to be loving it much more than I am.  I like these tracks.  I like a few other tracks on here too, but the thought of Villalobos digging my holy grail ECM catalouge and reworking it is an IDEA that I love moreso than the execution.   I feel like it is my duty to gush over this album, but in truth I find a lot of it leaves me really cold.  Sift for the gems.

STS - STSisGOLD:  Uhhh yeah total hotness here.

Sunosis - Bleeder:  Slick, if not standard, IDM from the 2007 album Warmed.

The Naked & The Famous - Young Blood (Futurecop! Remix):    I posted the original back in post blog20100923, but if there was an ecstatic pop snog just begging for a ecstatic housey rework, well you know the rest.

Vanessa Carlton - Carousel:  It might be weird to say, but the melodic structure of this song kind of reminds me of They Might Be Giants.  They should really cover this song.  From the new album "Rabbits on the Run".

Atlas Genius - Trojans:  Feel good pop in a world that has come to grips with Vampire Weekend.

Cults - Bad Things:  Another great new Cults track, mining the cuteness of 60s girlpop.  I wish we could get this album without the needless indulgences of actually putting in cult-leader quotes.  What's the point?

Darq E Freaker - Waka x Cherryade (Sinden Edit):  Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh HOLY BANGER.  Fucking sweet.

Death Grips - Lord of the Game ft Mexican Girl:  Take the hardcore beats above and UP THAT ANTE.  Another banging track from the new LP Exmilitary.  I like a few of the tracks, but like comparable efforts ala Brotherhood Of The Bomb, some Antipop, etc, get the album, sift for the gems.

Die & Interface ft William Cartwright - Bright Lights (Rockers Mix):  This stuff is like the perky cheerleader version of D&B.

Eskmo - Moving Glowstream (Amon Tobin Remix)
Eskmo - We Got More (Video Edit):  Tobin and Eskmo have been sharing aesthetics in the past few years, but Amon Tobin's newfound soundart love shows up in this remix in full force.  And yes, the Eskmo video edit is better than the full length track.  Just enough of the stompa-stompa-stomp,.

Gatekeeper - Rawtones:  Speaking of stompy business, Gatekeeper gives us the refined videogame aestetic of that hard dubsteppy love.

Gramatik - So Much For Love:  Top track of solid downtempo breakbeat off the new Beatz & Pieces Vol 1.

Hackney Colliery Band - Africa (Chrome's Yum Yum Version) (Toto cover):  yeah, it's even better as an instrumental.

Jamie Woon - Lady Luck
Jamie Woon - Middle
Jamie Woon - Spirits:  Jamie Woon is pop exemplified.  With a bit of slinkiness coming from the James Blake/Weeknd electro-rnb world, it's all pop glory for this guy.  Like Jimmy Tenor meets Weeknd.

Jhameel - I Am The Silhouette:  Speaking of pop beats, here's another glittery Jhameel track for you to paste to your ceiling and stare at dreamily.

Kangding Ray - Leavaila Scheme:  New album is "OR", and I am digging this dark IDMey track on it.

Lisbeth Scott & Nathan Barr - Sancto Erico (True Blood OST):  Ha ok so I had to pull something from the True Blood soundtrack.  :)

Big K.R.I.T. - R4 Theme Song:  The Return of 4Eva is the best hiphop album of 2011 so far.  It's long and strong all the way through.  This guy has all the bases (basses?) covered and holy shit I never thought I'd see the day where a 85 minute hiphop album would keep me entranced the whole way through.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Broken Bells - Meyrin Fields:  The whole Meyrin Fields EP is a bit meh, but this song is great in a we-love-Yeasayer way.

Cults - Abducted
Cults - Oh My God:  OK OK, the band is super douchey, but the some of the songs are pretty good.   From the new self-titled album.

Free Agents Brass Band - We Made It Through That Water (Treme OST)
Rebirth Brass Band - Feel Like Funkin' It Up (Treme OST)
Soul Rebels Brass Band - Drinka Little Poison (4 U Die) (Treme OST):  Uhh yeah the Treme soundtrack is kind of awesome.  Kinda sorta amazing awesome.

Jhameel - Foundation
Jhameel - Love Me Twice:  The new EP is just titled "Dance".  Pretty straightforward.  Yup, great little dance pop songs with judicious autotune, but it's kind of perfect in its own way, like an even more poppy Passion Pit.  Get the EP!

Keren Ann - My Name Is Trouble (Walter Sobcek Remix):  Uhhhh the singing here kind of makes me wet myself in a way I haven't been since Marina And The Diamonds came along.

Maggie Eckford - For What It's Worth:  Fabulous pop from the 2010 album "For What It's Worth".

Marsen Jules - A Moment of Grace
Marsen Jules - Sleep My Brother, Sleep:  Like the Pop Ambient records, a new Marsen Jules record is like clockwork.  Pleasing pulses and washes of strings and reverb, as per usual.  Nostalgia doesn't really break any new ground, but if you're a Marsen Jules fan like me, you like ground nice and cozy and not going anywhere but sleeeeeeeeeeep.

Radian - Git Cut Noise:  From the 2009 album Chimeric, I love the texture and development of this piece.

SBTRKT - Wildfire:  Soulful steppy bass!

The Mountain Goats - High Hawk Season:  Oh I just love the acapella goodness here.

The National - Exile Vilify:  So apparently this is from the Portal 2 videogame?  What the hell!  That's rad.  Videogame companies, commission more fabulous music!

Young Galaxy - Firestruck:  I went back to their 2009 album Invisible Republic and it's fabulous.  But then the end comes with this song and it's all tears and wobbly knees goodness.

A.M. Architect - Upon:  2 tracks of smooth downtempo from 2009's The Road To The Sun.

Acid House Kings - Would You Say Stop (Perfect Nines Remix):  One of the most wildly mis-named bands delivers some textbook pop precision.

Barn Owl - Shadowland:  Title track of moody post-rock guitar atmospherics from the new LP.

Batwings Catwings - Endless Summer (Jacob Safari Remix):  Like taking Yeah Yeah Yeahs in to a sampler, tossing on some distortion, and cranking the gain.

Blackbird Blackbird - Euphoria:  The most straightforward and IDM-lite track from the yet, gets all the claps and clutter just right.

Chad VanGaalen - Sara:  From the new album Diaper Island, I like this track a bunch.  And that's the thing, there are always VanGaalen tracks I like a bunch, but I never really want to listen to any of his albums more than twice.  Booo on me.

Chocolate MC - (unknown track):  Don't know the name, but here's some random hot ish from Cuba for you.

Chrissy Murderbot - Break U Off
Chrissy Murderbot - The Vibe Is So Right ft MC Zulu:  This guy proved to the world that he has digested pretty much every dance style known to the world via his weekly mix series that went from Quebec late 70s disco to ragga jungle to deep techno.  His new album Women's Studies is the result of his research, that the pinnacle of music can be found in juke and booty.  WTF.  Some seriously good beats on this cultural anomaly.

Clams Casino - Gorilla
Clams Casino - Natural:  2 tracks of dreamy-witchy downtempo from the brand new Rainforest EP.

Gang Gang Dance - Chinese High
Gang Gang Dance - Glass Jar:    HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME.  It's like if the woman from The Sundays got inspired to make music again after going to a The Boredoms concert.  SO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  Just listen to the epic build of Glass Jar!!!

Left Lane Cruiser - Giving Tree:  I love the bluesy recordings where the FUZZ BOX alone is constantly threatening to entirely overtake the vocals... AND the guitars.  all hail the whirling organ.  From the perfectly titled LP Junkyard Speed Ball.

Saigon - Clap ft Faith Evans:  Epic.  This could have been a hot 150 second single, but nooooooo...

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - The Diamond Sea (Sonic Youth cover):  PERFECT ENDING HERE.  Classic.

blog 2011/06/29 - the storms brew overhead and we run frantic, unaware

Austra - Lose It
Austra - Shoot The Water:  I can't yet pass judgement on the whole album, but I do love these two tracks.   Within the new album Feel It Break lays some fabulous synthpop that combines the lushness of Young Galaxy with vocals that maybe kinda sorta maybe remind you of The Knife.  Recommended!

Bon Iver - Beth / Rest:  The closing track of the fabulous new self-titled album, it is a vaseline-soaked pastel painting of mid-80s synth and bravado, new again for the 21st century.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Braids - Plath Heart:  The new album Native Speaker has been growing on me like a tree fungus.  I feel it has the seeds of a minor Joanna Newsom-type genius.  The songs are expansive like Newsom's latest efforts, and the vocals can sometimes hint at her most adorable of tendencies.  But the roots are more firmly in indie rock, and the closest analouge that comes to mind would be Zola Jesus, for the mood and scope alone.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Dum Dum Girls - Take Care Of My Baby
Dum Dum Girls - Wrong Feels Right:  I hadn't been feeling them much before, but I kind of love the new EP "He Gets Me High".  The best sounds of 60s girl bands and 90s rock fuse together in a great way here.  Highly recommended.

Ezra Koenig - Papa Hobo:  Yes, the guy from Vampire Weekend.

Funeral Party - Just Because:  Just something something rocknroll...

Hollywood Holt - The Show:  I for one salute the age of more anal-sex & bondage samples in my hiphop.

Joe Pug & Strand of Oaks - Hard Life (Bonnie Prince Billy cover):  I can't remember, is this even more lowkey than the original?

Labyrinth Ear - Walk on the Moon (Arthur Russell cover):  The classic gets an honest tribute to it.

Okkervil River - Hanging From A Hit
Okkervil River - Rider:  How many amazing albums are out now?  Oh well let me just say:  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  "I Am Very Far" is genius.  Sheer genius.  Fucking amazing.  Buy it now.  Yes.

Peacetreaty - Change (Flinch Remix):  I don't listen to much treble-attack dubstep, but I do love the synths in this one.  One of the few slam-it-all-on dubstep tracks that I've been loving.

Scott Hutchinson & Rod Jones - I Forgot the Fall:  YES!  That is the guy from Frightened Rabbit.  Why do you ask?

Shabazz Palaces - An Echo From The Hosts That Profess Infinitum:  Hotness from the new album Black Op.

Teen Daze - Surface:  Off of "A Silent Planet".

Wild Beasts - Burning
Wild Beasts - Invisible:  I didn't get in to the last Wild Beasts album, and I didn't really care for the new one (Smother) much either, but these two simmering tracks really struck a lovely chord with me.

Cat People - Sorry:  Reminds me a bit of Whale mixed with Vampire Weekend, which is not a bad place to be.  New album is called Love Battle.

Engineers - What It's Worth (Helios Remix):  I am a big Helios fan, and it's about time they got more remixes out!   They are a bit like Ulrich Schnauss, but with less of a heavy foot on the fuzz pedal.

Friendly Fires - Blue Cassette
Friendly Fires - Live Those Days Tonight (Tim Green Remix):  Both from the new LP Pala, this is energetic synth pop at its best.

Geotic - Union:  Delicate idm resting on a basic plodding synth beat!
