MP3 blog 2012/02/28

blog 2012/02/28 - crawling to the starting line, just barely

IT IS ON.  Q-BOUNCE IS RETURNING.
OMG WHAT.

Alcoholic Faith Mission - Dancing Fools
Alcoholic Faith Mission - Running With Insanity:  New EP And The Running With Insanity is a glorious mash of totally satisfying rock trends and it goes down quite well.  Reommended.

Andrea Belfi - Wege B:  Wege is a stripped down mood album of instrumental inflection that would coo a fan of Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Deaf Center or Jim O'rourke.  Really intriguing stuff, and comes recommended.

David's Lyre  - We Found Love (Rihanna cover):  Yeah, how can you go wrong?

Essáy & CoMa - Deceptive:  The instrumentation has some great influence from The XX, and the vocals borrow from Emika.  So a winner all around.

Fred Frith & Evelyn Glennie - Walls Are Loosening:  Another long experimentally track in this post!  I highly recommend the film Touch The Sound about Glenni, whom is a deaf percussionist and sound artist.  Her collaborations with Frith, which are documented in the film, were released in 2007 on Tzadik as the album The Sugar Factory, and it's quite good for all you avant/improv fans out there.

Halina Larsson - Fires And French Horns (Alf Tumble Remix):  Totally blissful electro pop done so perfectly.

Jenn Grant - Baby's Been Away
Jenn Grant - Oh My Heart:  New album Honeymoon Punch is out now and will fill a void CBC-shaped void in your heart.  For fans of singer-songwriter indie pop with just a touch of twand.  Not quite Jessica Lea Mayfield, but few are...

Labyrinth Ear - Humble Bones:  Smokey AND bouncey?  Sure, but it works.  From the new Apparitions EP.

Ladyhawke - Black, White And Blue (The Big Pink Remix):  Just imagine it as ABBA for the 21st century, and it's all good.

Rustie - All Nite:  Bust out the E-soaked glowsticks, this just just went KANDISTEP.

Self Evident - Fierce Fears
Self Evident - Oh Baby Baby ft Chadio (Yan Zombie Remix):  Seductive pounding slams, then smooth as silk bass wash jammie.  These tracks are amazing.

MP3 blog 2012/02/23

blog 2012/02/23 - you know this is forever

First up:  Big announcement for Spotify users!
Someone has graciously offered to convert my blog entries in to Spotify playlists.
The transition is not perfect, about 30-40% of the songs I post aren't on Spotify, but if that's your main way of listening you might be down.

I'm not running this, it's all being done by a person named J.K., and so I take no responsibility if they suddenly up and vanish.
I can't get Spotify up here in Canada, so I'll have no way to do it myself or verify or any of that.  So buyer beware and all that, but he seems chill and I don't think he'll go crazy and suddenly start spamming you with Justin Bieber tracks.

Alias - Boom Boom Boom
Alias - Wrap:  If you've followed the arc of my DJ career, you'll notice a distinct love for the works of Alias, going back to the late 90s.  Fever Dream is another solid slab of wonderful breaks with a techy edge and is a must-have for breaks lovers out there.

Buraka Som Sistema - (We Stay) Up All Night (Botnek Remix):  After my disappointment in the album, this pretty much makes up for EVERYTHING.

Die Antwoord - I Fink U Freeky:  Haven't heard the whole album, but I can't help but love this song.  I wonder if I'd like it less if I hadn't seen the video first?

Dirty Three - Rising Below:  OMG NEW DIRTY THREE!  Haven't heard the new record Toward the Low Sun yet but I am so hyped for it.  Can't wait.

Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know (Rey & Kjavik Repaint):  This was one of those songs where you liked it the first time you heard it, but on the 2nd time through you thought "hmmm still good, but I could see myself hating this really fast if I heard it more than once a week..."  Yeah fastforward a week and everyone's vomiting on cue.  I like this remix a lot because it doesn't over-indulge in the sweet pop hooks, but still includes them all there in the necessary manner.

Grimes - Genesis
Grimes - Skin:  I wasn't digging the full length as much as everyone else seems to be, but ahh these songs are nice.

Illuha - Aikou:  The new album Shizuku is filled with stunning, shimmering glorious ambient textures.  If I had heard this last year, it most certainly would have been high atop my list of best instrumental albums of the year.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Jill Barber - Mischeivous Moon
Jill Barber - Tell Me:  She's pretty much the ultimate romance crooner.  Saw her live last month and she and her band were spot-on, even better than on record.  Corny romance music for corny romance lovers.  Dress up in your finest gown, go out for a night on the town with your beau, and fingerbang while drunkenly in the bathroom.

MDEINHEIGHTS - Wildflowers (Exhale Efreet):  Screw you and your wacky punctuation, but there's some nice pop chops under that mess of periods and colons.

Pete And The Pirates - Winter 1:  ahhh these guys always have such concise little pop rock songs.  Always a pleasure.

The Caretaker - In The Deep And Dark Hours Of The Night:  "Patience (After Sebald)" doesn't really add much beyond "An Empty Bliss..." but it has a few tracks that kind of work.  I am unsure as to why this guy gets the heaps of praise out there, but ahh well I've never been one to have taste.  Much of it seems so much less confident than say, Ekkehard Ehlers.  But as I said, a few useful gems in it all.

The Joy Formidable - I Don't Want To See You Like This (Steve Nieve piano version):  Ahh this follows up nicely!  The oft noisey JF do some great reworks, and I love it all.  Had I listened to them more last year, they most likely would have ended up on my top 40 list.  Apologies, Joy Formidable!

Trailer Trash Tracys - Dies In 55:  It's like all yr fvourite dreampop is mushed together and you don't care because it tastes so good.

MP3 blog 2012/02/14

blog 2012/02/14 - my heart skips a beat at the thought of you.  OMG call an ambul-

Alexander - A Million Years:  I'm oh so heartened toknow that Paul Simon is back in style!

Cobra & Vulture - Station Agent of Change:  From the new record Seer, it's like an idie-rocker version of Charming Hostess', which is ALL FINE BY ME.

Fantastic Mr. Fox - Fool Me
Fantastic Mr. Fox - Over:  I just heard the Evelyn EP and am oh so blown away by it.  A few sounds borrowed from the long-gone heyday of IDM moulded in to fabulous contemporary bass compositions.  Highly recommended.

Gold Panda - An Iceberg Hurled Northward Through Clouds:  I find a lot of GP stuff a tad cluttered, which is probably why I dig the simple plodding going on here so much, all wrapped up in their signature production.

James Blake - At Birth:  Blake has kind of had a precipitous stumble from the scary hype-fueled peaks, but at least track really shines from Love What Happened Here.

Little Roy - Lithium (Nirvana cover):  Yes, I'm still a bit stunned by this as well.

Machinedrum - U Don't Survive:  Another little boom-bip-skronk from the new LP Room(S).

Marissa Nadler - In Your Lair, Bear:  stunning and arcane folk from the self-titled 2011 album.

Mugison - To The Bone:  Smooth barroom blues-rock from their 2007 selftitled album.

Oliver Tank - Last Night I Heard Everything in Slow Motion:  And people said autotune couldn't be beautiful!

Optimus Gryme - Mezzanine:  From the album Eclipse, I love dubstep basslines that are tradtional to the techstep routes.  Slam those snares!

The Rapture - It Takes Time To Be A Man:  With an intro that is sure to be sampled and looped for a hiphop instrumental by this time next year, I'm kind of taken aback that I really enjoy this track from In The Grace Of Your Love.

Thyladomid & Adriatique - Deep In The Three:  DEEP HOUSE AROUND FEIST SONGS IS A GOOD IDEA.

Two Door Cinema Club & Wiz Khalifa - What You Want When I'm Gone (The Two Friends Mashup):  These two go together like peanutbutter and chocolate.  That is, with a high-powered machine that squirts delicious every-which-way.

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - Queens (Remix):  Wish I knew who did this drugged out mix, but it was just sent to me with this title.  Ahhh well.  YT//ST are one of the hottest things in Canada right now, and that says a lot when you consider all the gems we produce for you.  Hot hot hot hot shit right here.  So good.

MP3 blog 2012/02/07

blog 2012/02/07 -  the word is that yes I will be there and so will you and it will be glorious

16-Bit - Le Hanwell Hustle:  BOOM BOOM BOOM GROWL SCREEEEAM BOOM@!

BBU - Please, No Pictures ft Das Racist:  Dug in to the Unreleased, Remixes, Collaborations Das Racist collection, and while lots of meh going on, I loved this track.  Yes, get kids to do your rap choruses.

Braids - Peach Wedding:  Off the 7'' split with Purity Ring!

Buraka Som Sistema - Hypnotized:  The new album Komba didn't do much for me, but this awesomely goofy track is... ummm..  goofily awesome?  yes.

Find The Others - In Time:  spirit-lifting beautiful folk music from the self-titled album

Gramatik & Brale - New Generation:  hot breaks from the b-side comp Official & Bootleg Remixes, Colabs & Rare Tracks.

Haruka Nakamura - Graf:  gentle pulses and dreamytime snuggle music from Afterglow.

Hayzee - Press Start:  Oh it's on, drop that quarter and the shit is gonna fly.

How To Dress Well - Suicide Dream 1 (Orchestral Version):  The choral presentation reminds us all that we live in a post-Bjork world.

James Ferraro - Earth Minutes:  Ferraro caused a firestorm for his topping of Wire magazine's best-of lists.  I see the divisiveness.  But he has a magic that falls somewhere between Max Tundra's early stuff and the outsider-art Americana of The Residents.  Not exactly the most populous of critical cross-sections.

Jeffrey Foucault - Northbound 35:  Totally earnest!  Totally folk!  from 2004's Stripping Cane.

Ljones - Autumn Groove
Ljones - To The Groove:  Yes, there is groove here.  Some slick downtempo for the 2012 crowd from Soul Below.

Nujabes - Fellows:  I don't know how it happens, but some days I'm just all about the BREAKS.

Pepe Deluxé - Lying Peacefully (radio edit):  break-a-break-a-breaky-break-breaks!

Skylar Grey - Dance Withou You:  Then we'll take the bangs and move on to even more pop!

Teen Daze - Wet Hair (Japandroids cover):  Ahhh the Vancouver classic done all drippy with synth and love.

The Good Natured - Skeleton:  Sure they sound like many other female-fronted rock bands, but oh they do that Metric thing oh so well.

Tycho - Coastal Brake:  Ummm yeah so lots of chill going on this update I guess!  This time in that lovely Ulrich Schnauss vein.

MP3 blog 2012/02/03

blog 2012/02/03 - in before I'm gone

Action Bronson & Statik Selektah - Keep Off The Grass:  Well-Done has some hot shit on it, but the beats aren't as good as Dr. Lecter, and Bronson drops some even douchier lines.  Watched an interview with him online and he says he has like 5 albums recorded, so I can guilt-free skip the down-notes on this one.

Active Child - Hanging On:  Modern RnB makes a big comeback in 2012!

Baba Yaga - Circe
Baba Yaga - Tell:  I love this mutant world we live in.

DJ Madd - When I First Met You:  Saw this filed under "dubstep".  Oh kids these days are so stupid.  And oh this track is so hot.

Fotoshop - Becoming Zen:  Woah, psychedelic libido wash.

Jhameel - Pursuit of Glory:  Surprising to have a tender acoustic song, and also shocking at how good it is.

Killer Mike - Ready Set Go:  This guy is a despicable human being, but the beat is hot.  Dude, shut up and just give me your instrumental.

Kouta - Sakura:  Lush and glorious, IDM taken from the Orinda EP.

Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers (Lost Session version)
Lykke Li - Jerome (Lost Session version):  Loving the lower-fi stripped-down versions from The Lost Sessions Vol 1.

M+A - Liko Lene Lisa
M+A - Yes.pop:  things.yes?  Grammar.no!

Mia Doi Todd - Norwegian Wood (The Beatles cover)
Mia Doi Todd - What If We Do (Nobody Remix):  How can you say no?

Rae Spoon - Crash Landing
Rae Spoon - When I Said There Was An End To Love I Was Lying:  I Can't Keep All Of Our Secrets is much more electropoppy than prior albums, but underneath the production we still have one of Canada's best songwriters at the heart of it.  Highly recommended.

Richard Bucker - Hindsight:  In my car I had the Buckner album cued up right after the Rae Spoon one and I barely noticed the transition between the two.  Both have fantastic voices and rich songwriting.    Buckner's Our Blood is more straightup folkrock, and comes recommended.

Sigur Rós - Saeglopur (ENiGMA Remix):  Iceland always needs more bass.  TRUE STORY.
