MP3 blog 2013/10/01

blog 2013/10/01 - there is pain in it all

This week, and forever at the top:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131001.zip

Arcade Fire - Reflektor ft David Bowie:  Arcade Fire's back and the Talking Heads are once again king.  Kick out the cocaine disco grooves.  Oh and hey, David Bowie?  Woah.

Bat For Lashes - We Found Love (Rihanna cover):  Finally, the breathy drama of it can be fully realized!

Bill Callahan - Javelin Unlanding (Expanding Dub)
Bill Callahan - Winter Road (Highs in the Mid-40's Dub):  This is how Callahan serenades you on your way to the afterworld.

Cassie - Me & You (CRNKN Remix):  So many remixes of this classic, and this is my favourite one yet.

Elvis Costello and The Roots - Sugar Won't Work:  2 great tastes you never thought would go together!  Wise Up Ghost And Other Songs out now.

Guided By Voices - Class Clown Spots A UFO:  Ecstatic pop where the opening lines take me right to TMBG's John Henry album, and that sets the bar right high.

Lucas Hicks - Greenest Summer:  This is from the album Slower, and has that Wavvers fuzz with the Girls emotional package, I guess like a modern Eric's Trip sound?

Maxxi Soundsystem - Regrets We Have No Use For ft Name One (Matthew Herbert Remix):  I'll immediately dive in to anything Herbert has touched, but oh my the song title was truly what brought me here and hey there are blankets and I have decided to stay.

Ms Mr - Hurricane (CHVRCHES Remix)
Ms Mr - Think Of You (RAC Remix):  Insanely good pop.  Textbook great.  All of your favourite sonds with a voice reminiscent of The Gossip.  It's just great.  Highly recommended.

Murcof & Philippe Petit - Pegasus:  Pieces like this give me such shivers. I love gurgled electronics sitting on par with melodic chamber instrumentals, swirling together in a psychedelic incantation.  I haven't heard the new album "First Chapter" yet but if this is the masthead for it, I'm in.

Nine Inch Nails - Copy of a:  So apparently there was this guy named Trent Reznor and he was like, THERE, at the start of the internet and made some famous usenet postings or something?  Anyways, he wallowed in obscurity for a few decades, did some awesome background work for Aaron Sorkin dialogue, and has an album out now.  We wish him well and hope he can make a name for himself, he sounds very promising!

Scott Walker - 'See You Don't Bump His Head'
Scott Walker - Tar:  Bish Bosch is a singular musical world untouched by any reality you have known before.  It is all the mythology and symbolic density of The Swans rennaissance, if instead of an industrial blues background he had a baroque opera opera, then fell in a vat of mutagen.  This will not be for everyone, for the adventurous it is an untouchable work of capital A Art.

Sleigh Bells - Bitter Rivals:  New single tones down the crunch, ups the pop, and I love it all the same.

The Julie Ruin - Cookie Road:  Run Fast, out now.  Welcome back.
