A solid mix of piano and guitar loops, with backward masked drones rumbling through. The Coffee & Spectacles EP from 2008 is highly recommended. For fans of the Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto collabs and Isan.

Criminally, I had not listened to Vancougar's 2008 album Canadian Tuxedo until just recently. I flagellate myself nightly in repentance, as it is wickedly good. This quartet of women combine the wiles of Leslie Gore with some Team Dresch aggression and pop sensibilities of The Gossip.

I am going to start posting up some albums that I digitize from various sources. Most of these will be oddball or experimental things, but let's get the ball rolling with a classic:

I first posted this to my MP3 blog (thus the odd filename in the link) but it absolutely warrants the heraldry involved in inaugurating my dump of rare albums.

Is this rare? Well, rare enough! Everyone who owned this assuredly played the shit out of the cassette, and if you were cool enough to have the tape it probably scratched to hell from DJing every hot elementary school party you were at.
Mind you, the "Dance mix" series were a Canadian phenomenon. See that logo in the upper left? That's Much Music. That's the Canadian version of the old MTV that used to play music videos.
So for any non-Canucks out there, this might be a something entirely new. Dizzingly new. Pure ambrosia of new. BUCKETS FULL OF WIN. DO YOU UNDERSTAND???

My rip here is from an old cassette tape loaned to me by a beautiful gay man who kept this treasure for 17 long years. Steven, my gratitude!

The Japandroids are another winner. The vocals have that muted-hallway Fugazi and the production is thunderous like early 90s math-punk. Their 2009 album Post-Nothing is a winner. If you are or ever were a fan of Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, Archers of Loaf, or any of those intersections, I highly recommend you grab this album.

Jokers of the Scene - Annie Mac Show Mini Mix: a 5-minute minimix that shows off these Ottawa producers. Not a track unto itself, but a great piece of heat to add to your "at the gym" mix.

Kanji Kinetic - The Buffalo VIP: Some heavy-ass garage servings going on here, with cheeky sample usage that would even make a gabber producer smile. Goodness!

Little Boots - New In Town: I have to say I was disappointed with much of the Little Boots LP, especially after some crazy underground remixes. But this single is unavoidabley addictive. Give it a chance!

Major Lazer is a cheeky collab between Diplo and Switch and their 2009 LP "Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do" is getting a lot of hype. OK so I didn't think it was 100% solid, but I rarely ever take albums like this as a whole, instead just harvest some singles.
Mad props for auto-tuning the baby on the first track here. Much of the album is a bit harder, so I def wanted to include Can't Stop Now as a taste of the mellower grooves.
And then last but not least, Ottawa producer extraordinaire DZ turns in a massive remix of the first single, Hold The Line. With a billion remixes of this track available, this is one of the tightest out there.

Mr. Chop - Snob: It has been a long time since we posted up some organic funk breaks on here, so let me rectify that with this hot little number of live drum chopping and mad flute licks.

Nas - Hope (Beirut Remix): Is this the Beirut we all know and love? The baroque/folk wunderkind? I doubt it, but lucky for them the producer creds caught my attention, and while there are no Mexican horns on the track, it's a slick and poignant single.

Sarah Boothroyd - Some Sort of Dark Force: What's this? Another OTTAWA person? Yeegads, 3 in one post!
I had no idea this woman was from Ottawa, but hers was the strongest track from the Deep Wireless 3 compilation, a free release of contemporary radio art.
Highly recommended if you like the experimental sounds arts.

blog 2009/07/19 - What is David Byrne doing in my closet?

That guy is just everywhere. Whether slipping himself in to house music, busting shit up in indie venues, or hiding in fumigated storage lockers, David Byrne seems everywhere these days.
Let's not forget his amazing collab with Eno last year that gave us "Strange Overtones", an instant classic. And he's even been on The Simpsons!
This guy is just simply unavoidable. But he knew that. He knew he had me with his herky-jerky dancing in Once In A Lifetime. That bastard!

Well in this update we find him, lastly, on a track with X-Press 2.... and it works!
Firstly, he is part of the indie-god caucus that rules via the new compilation "Dark Was The Night". Take your indie-love-in-masturbatory-dream-list, collect all of the artists, and toss them on one album.
Make a few interact, just for fun.
I can't recommend this album enough: Dark Was The Night is a fantastic work of organizing, songwriting, and it even benefits an HIV/AIDS organization.

The tracks here from the comp are by Antony and Bryce Dessner, Buck 65 & Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti, Dirty Projectors and David Byrne, The Decemberists, and finally The National.
But you know what? This is only a small sliver of the awesome contained within. OK, Cat Power and Iron & Wine don't hit their full potential, but any minor dubs are quickly eclipsed by the immensity of WIN here.

2009 brings a new Ad•ver•sary album. Entitled "A Bright Cut Across Velvet Sky", it's mostly a remix album, but with a couple entirely new tidbits in there. Kind of like the odds-and-sods halo numbers that would come after any Nine Inch Nails LP. For those that like the cutting edge of industrial goodness, this is basically your Further Down The Spiral. Recommended.

Frightened Rabbit remind me of the lush songwriting and savoury cadences of The Twilight Sad. The big difference is that the post-rockisms are absent, leaving it just the heart-wrenching indie melancholy. A touch of the Damien Rice, a touch of the Twilight Sad, and probably a few perfect couple of songs for your next drinking-n-crying mixtape. "The Midnight Organ Fight" is the album. Highly recommended.

Kaki King - Life Being What It Is: I love delicate pop like this, and it helps that it reminds me a bit of Eric's Trip "deep in the bedroom" kind of an affair. OK, well at least until the wonderful background strings come in. That'd be one big bedroom. Who cares, we're in love.

Music of the Central African Pygmies - Men's Elephant-Hunting Song: This track is startlingly awesome. The complexity and hypnotic interplay of this chant is one thing. The building storm in the background just makes it that much more perfect. And to top it all off? It ends with the hugest thunderstorm crescendo! This is from the 1995 release "Music of the Central African Pygmies", collecting recordings from over 40 years of Pygmies of the Ituri rainforest in Central Africa.

What's been happening?
I've been busy!

Ottawa Bluesfest has been keeping me ridiculously busy, and that is even WITH me skimping on concerts.
The highlight was seeing Ornette Coleman live! He was 12 feet from me! eEEEEEE!
I also saw great performances by Iron & Wine, Okkervil River, Neko Case, and King Sunny Ade & his African Beats and so much more.
Good times!


I haven't been doing many "theme" postings as of late, but I noticed I had enough experimental stuff sitting in the "totally awesome must post" folder. To spare those of you that aren't too adventurous and are only here for the pop, this post will run the range from ambient, to metal, to experimental to IDM.
If you like interesting sounds, be sure to grab this post. If you only like the verse/chorus/verse or beat/breakdown/beat shiz, feel free to skip.

One of the most astounding finds recently has been Eluvium's Life Through Bombardment box set. Released as a massive and exquisite 7 LP set, this tome covers the entire recorded output of Eluvium. Much of it is rich hypnotic ambience, with lots of acoustic piano and atmospheric sound art to boot. One of the few times I can honestly say I have say down with a set longer than 3 CDs and been captivated the whole way through.

Gnaw Their Tongues - Rife With Deep Teeth Marks: Oooh this one kind of came at me out of nowhere. I am totally unfamiliar with the band, but this track perfectly blends drone textures with slow-grind metal and noisy screeching. A winner.

I stumbled on these Grey Gersten tracks by accident. He recently curated a month at The Stone, the artist focused performance space run by John Zorn in NYC. Think The Knitting Factory, only cooler.
He does some brilliant sound-art and is apparently also a filmmaker.

The first Grouper album was all the rage, but it didn't rise above the level of many similar albums that were released at the same time. The track here is from their 2009 album Way Their Crept and continues with what they do best: Spooky reverbed lofi washouts. I love the primitiveness of it. It's like recordings I used to make in my bedroom, except this person can actually sing.

Jacaszek's album "Treny" is from 2008 and was a stunning surprise. The first thing it establishes for itself is the sheer quality of it's sound and production. Fusing ambience with clicks-n-cuts and IDM, the album doesn't rest in any genre-specific conventions. It delights me like in that same way when you first heard Murcof. Highly recommended.

Moderat wins for the goofiest album cover of the year with their 2009 self-titled album, featuring a woman punching her own nose on the cover. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN??? A slick album with tight production credentials, only a few of the songs really jumped at me in terms of composition. Recommended for you to sift through online at places like Beatport and buy the gems. Moderat is still riding that high-water mark of IDM production, so best not miss this wave.

Peter Rehberg's "Work For GV 2004-2008" album is another delightful surprise. As you might guess from an album collecting works for film, the cinematic expanses and dramatic flairs in the tracks are high. Some seriously depressing/disturbed spoken word bits anchor the record with a narrative, but for me it is the textural rumbling tracks that truly shine. Highly recommended for fans of O.S.T., post-industrial soundscapes, and disturbing sounds to play at Halloween.

The internet just won't shut up about Sunn O))), but not without due reason. They have been kicking butt and chewing gum for years now with a heavy release schedule and lots of touring. Their 2009 LP Monoliths & Dimensions has been praised out the wazzoo, so really, why don't you have it yet? What is you dysfunction? If you have been put off by the metal-tude of them before, this record ups the "ecstatic reverb" knob and features chanting and some bliss-out chords. Same sort of song structure as previous records, but you can tell they have been listening to lots of Bohren & Der Club of Gore, and that's always a good thing.

Bassnectar - Art of Revolution: I always love it when a blog starts with a track like this. Pure dubstep cheeze perfection. Hard slamming bass, rad samples looped with just the right repetition, and a subbass squelch that could make it fit in to a chiller dubstep set or a streetbass party. It seems that Bassnectar, who once did more glitchy breaks-n-bass, have gone the same route as almost every single other beats producer: dancey dubstep. I guess go where the Beatport money is, right? At least it is quality, as there is more than enough poor dubstep out there.

Dada Life - Happy Hands & Happy Feet: We keep things popping at a steady butt-jiggle pace here. Dada Life is one of my favourite electrohouse producers, churning out a number of high quality dancefloor classics. They always go out of their way to make ridiculously happy songs too. This would be a gamble for a lesser producer, but they pull off this delirious feat with gurning glee. Glowsticks for everyone!

Dan Deacon - Build Voice: Dan Deacon is that post-rave hipsterism that has been the hallmark of every "hipster electronica" album, and marks that moment in their young lives where they discovered new places they could insert their glowsticks. After that, it was all downhill. They fell in to years of jadedness and snark. Only once they came to embrace that inner glowstick again were they able to come forth, beards and all, and shout "I'm here, I use glowsticks as a buttplug, and I wish it wasn't creepy someone my age to rave!" And huzzah, joyous hipster electronica came to the clubs. Now all of the kids that once raved no longer have good hookups for their drugs and just drink and wiggle to Dan Deacon et all. It's not a bad life, just don't expect him topping my best of 2009 list. Would you ever expect plaid at a rave?

Dead Prez vs Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks Of Hip Hop: The mashup fell out of popular favour once everyone realized that novelty alone wasn't enough to make 2 songs work together. Mind you, it wasn't rocket science: You just needed basic production skills, some musical and technical tastefulness, and voila. I am overjoyed that the deluge of mashups fell out of grace (and Soulwax went on to do something new and awesome) and now we just have occasional trickles. In this post Grey Album world, I point to mashups like this as examples of the bland process executed correctly. Take notes.

Don Diablo - Pussycat Too ft Example: This gets my vote as the most amusing hiphop song of 2009 so far. "Example" (uggh get a better MC name, please!) weaves a blurry metaphor of him vs women as dogs vs cats. The fuzzy lines between his metaphorical constructs and his furry fandom fantasies just make it that much more twisted and raw. Break out the fun-fur and get funky.

Grizzly Bear will be on almost every "best of 2009" list with their new LP Veckatimest. And you know what? So will Phoenix with their "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix".
Both albums are immediately accessible and catchy. Both have great song writing and production values.
Grizzly Bear has a bit more of an indie nod and veers slightly in to the Animal Collective style chord structures. Phoenix has more catchy vocals leaning towards Vampire Weekend style twee blissout, but mixed with a maturity that would appeal to any fan of The National or Peter Gabriel.
Both albums are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I have been listening to a lot of Morton Feldman lately. This 20th century composer was especially known for his minimalist constructions and sometimes enduringly long pieces, some 6 hours or more.
I haven't been listening to a specific album in particular, but a number of his albums simultaneously. Literally: Layering them on top of each other with multiple players going.
The piece here is from Crippled Symmetry, a wonderfully meditative work which, while not exactly game-changing in his oeuvre, is one of the most heralded examples.

Randy Newman - A Few Words In Defense Of Our Country: OK, I never would have expected to see this hear either. My only real reference to Randy Newman is the parody of him on Family Guy. (left foot right foot left foot right foot)
I was a bit shocked to see such glowing reviews of his 2008 album Harps and Angels, and so I had to check it out. While I can't get behind it as a whole, it was a surprise at how palatable his ramshackle rambling rants were. He has one song on it that is a total copy of Tom Waits "Picture In A Frame", which is actually a bit good, and the rest is a somewhat-awkward somewhat parodying slice of storyteller Americana. Not essential, but certainly curious.

Tarek Mansur - Destined: This is the kind of record that would get me all wet. You'd go in to your local record store and you'd dig through a crate of vinyl ambiguously titled "Electronic" and you'd find this odd EP at the back with an odd-yet-interestingly designed cover and an unknown name, on an unknown label. You'd take it up to the turntable and get floored. One side would be lush abstract soundscapes, and the other would be a dark mindfuck IDM revolution. This is the record that would make your day of vinyl buying complete, and would be the ultimate thing to get high to in your dark glowing basement. Highly recommended. Tarek Mansure is good times.

The Acorn - Good Enough (Cyndi Lauper cover): What a surprise this was! Another little treat from Ottawa's best band, and one the greatest exports Canada has to offer. They are touring with the likes of Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Calexico now. Hopefully this will calm our nerves until they return safe and sound.

"Thefreehoudini" is the new album from Themselves, and cleverly so, it is available free online. With a deep roster of guests (including bigger names like Slug and Aesop Rock), it is a must-have. The tracks I chose to include here have lesser-known MCs guesting, but to me they are the standouts. It is so good to hear Lionesque back in action, 11 years after first appearing on Dose One's Hemispheres.
Highly recommended for anyone in to abstract hiphop.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - There Is No Light: This organic duo pulses and swells. This is the most infectious throbbing music I have heard in a long time. With the orgiastic fever of Yoko Ono in her prime, but with quality song writing and DIY lust. Another perfect way to leave you.

We follow that up with a rather surreal rework of Lady Gaga... taking Poker Face and giving us... "Poker Her Face". WTF? What does that even mean?
I just picture Gaga all dolled up and stunned, having Kanye repeatedly stab his index finger in to her cheek and giggling each time.

But then I realize the track is pretty damn dope. A-Trak produces another winner, getting the GaGa line to sound like Amy Winehouse. Hot.

Let's jump ahead on the hip-top tip: the new Mos Def LP is "The Ecstatic" and it is hot. Highly recommended. We are now in the post-808s+heartbreak era of hiphop. Love him or hate 'em, Kanye changed the game. Witness: Mos Def on dual Taiko drums thundering out the bassline. Taiko resurgence? Hell yes. Love Lockdown's chorus brought it to the forefront.
But the LP is not post-Kanye, it's just pure Mos Def. Solidly innovative, if only suffering from being a little top-heavy in the singles. Whatever, you can delete the handful of weaker tracks. Buy this album now, or shamefully get it later when it makes all of the Best of 2009 charts.
It even features an incredible verse from Slick Rick and makes him cool again. If it can do that, what is remains impossible?

Z-Trip - M@sh Uptight: further in to the hiphop breakbeats, pioneer Z-Trip gives up a lot of goods on his website, and this is one of them. The glory of stadium rock combined with head-nodding goodness.

Boy Crisis - Dressed To Digress (Nero Remix): If you know me, you know I love when pop songs are given the dubstep treatment, and this one delivers in all of that assumed glory. OK OK, what the hell does "You can do me up like Woodrow Wilson" mean? When he says "You can do me like Bruce Springsteen / Ask the swim team / pass the string beans", I have a hard time believing this guy is talking to a woman. Luckily, I am more than happy to imagine him making out with other dirty dubstep boys.

This edition's flash-to-the-back, a special feature that I invented and noone else ever references, where-in we look backwards (in a flash) and see what is there in that cultural-temporal intersection that we somehow think is important.
Lo! It is Einstürzende Neubauten, love of my (childhood) life. I listened to Strategies Against Architecture and Tabula Rasa and Halber Mensch obsessively. I still get giddy shivers when I hear Blixa read from consumer catalogues!
Blume is a track from Tabula Rasa of staggering beauty that is often overlooked. Apart from the english version on my album, the single contained Japanese and French versions, as witness here. I love it when bands release alternate language versions. It reminds of Kraftwerk in it's goodness. The vocalist doesn't match the power my nostalgia holds on the English version, but I thought French-speaking people might enjoy.
And of course Ich Bin's is just a pure classic. Enjoy!

Halloween, Alaska - Champagne Downtown: While they are the winner of "Worst band name ever", this track scores points for pop-songsmithing. Then halfway through they do a "tribute to the angsty M83 songs" with their spoken word section. I can't tell if they are mocking M83 or are paying sincerely tribute. Oh those goofballs.

Handsome Furs - Cannot Get, Started: I wasn't entirely feeling the new LP Plague Park, but this track rocks. The vocals evoke my fondness for The National... except with synth drums and more Walkmen-esque guitars. Special award goes for awkward, sentence punctuation.

Iron And Wine - The Trapeze Swinger: As it turns out I have already posted a few tracks that are featured on "Around The Well", the new double CD from Iron & Wine. For fans of the band, it's a must. For those that are only casually acquainted, you can safely pass on this b-sides and rarities affair. The strongest of the bunch could easily have been distilled to a single 50 minute disc, but oh what a mind blowing disc that would be. Witness the spectacle of the hypnotic track "The Trapeze Swinger" here. *swoon*

Kraak & Smaak ft Ben Westbeech - Squeeze Me: Move over A-Skilzz, we have some new stars glowing in the world of "bubblegum breaks" production. These tracks are like eating sugar-filled breakfast cereal... although that analogy only works if you have dentures or a solid gold grill already. Delicious and sugary rich. Chances are if you are grooving, you have long since ODed on pop breaks and no longer care that you are gumming, on that you suckle on goodness.

M.I.A. & Annie Lennox - Paper Planes (B.Cause Party Break): This mashup dropped a while ago and fell right in to my heart. I love Annie Lennox to no end. I grew up with her, and her solo album "Diva" is one of my all-time favourite "not-so-secret shames". Lennox's vocals come from her single No More I Love Yous, and it reminds me just how awesome she is. This track is nothing mind blowing, but good fun.

Oh meow meow, we are back! Back in style, back on time, back in business.

Since I now will be posting these updates at http://djcpi.blogspot.com/ as well, I am going to try and be more web friendly and list URLs from artists here.
Please check out everyone you love. I am posting mostly new music, and so many of these bands will be on tour to a city near you!

Onwards and spinning....


I want to start near the end and talk about Terre Thaemlitz for a bit, who has revived their alias DJ Sprinkles for the new album "Midtown 120 Blues", which as it turns out is one of the most introspective and rewarding electronic/house music albums released since that really good 'cid was passed around in that Future Sound of London Lifeforms CD case way back when.
"Midtown 120 Intro" introduces the concept of the album, offering a brief deconstruction of house and a short history lesson as to what was lost and what truly birthed it.
That, coupled with Ball'r, combines wonderfully to give a sentimental glimpse back to a moment in time that was almost erased by Madonna and popular electronica markets. It all underscores how house was regional, and a moment in time, and how it was the sexual minorities, the gender minorities, the racial minorities that were all integral to the intersections from which 'house' arose as a movement, and was quickly co-opted and marketed. Well, marketed once they were able to cleanse it off any pesky 'gay'/undesirable associations.
"Ball'r (Madonna-Free Zone)" is a beautiful restrained minimal house track that slowly builds because it has nothing to prove to you or nobody; it knows the time. It feels sad, like a memorial for the ball scene of the 80s which Thaemlitz grew up around.
And it all perfectly underscores why as a DJ I seldom ever have any Madonna in my crate.

For more casual music fans, and people on casually involved with club culture, it's history, the struggles of the people that defined it, and the roots of the music that build it's foundations, this album might be a bit harder to get in to. It might not offer you the big pop rewards and sidechained basslines.
But if you know where this is coming from, this album is a bittersweet beauty.

Antony and The Johnsons - The Horror Has Gone: This beautiful b-side is from The Lake EP, circa '05. Stunning, palatable and sweet.

Bad Sector - Radial Body 2: The 2008 album "Storage Disk 2" is a bit too uneven for my tastes, but there were some glitchy/housey/minimal tracks like this on there that are super sweet. I love that swelly-choppy-housey sound. yum.

Common Market - Back Home (The Return): "I'm hollering at your feminist side" has to be the most pleasant opening line to a hiphop song I've heard in a while. A dope chill track, I wonder why if you kind of sound like Common in his heyday, do you name yourself Common Market? Ahh well, just enjoy the grooves. And Funkdoobiest scratch samples seal the deal.

I really don't know much about Cut Off Your Hands. It is another case of random MP3s falling in to my lap and them pop-rocking their way in to my heart. You keep rocking, rockers! 'lest my heart clog and sieze. They have that upbeat energy of The Wombats and a delightful accent that reminds me of The Futureheads.

Fever Ray - When I Grow Up (Dan Lissvik Version): Oh snap, the Fever Ray album is super hot and you damn well know it. I love how this remix pulls out the Ace Of Base/Architecture In Helsinki style low-key grooves, letting the vocal work take center stage.

Men - Off Our Backs: Men are the new band by the mustachioed member of Le Tigre and follow in that same vein that Le Tigre pioneered and Hercules Love Affair and DFA minted: The indie disco rock. They are currently on their first tour ever, and only had a 3-song EP available, but they can rock and write some deliciously catchy songs. For fans of Tegan & Sara, Le Tigre, Hercules & Love Affair, Juan Maclean, etc etc. Recommended!

Röyksopp - Happy Up Here (Breakbot Remix): As I said before, the new Royksopp just wasn't grooving me, but leave it to Breakbot to toss in some digital Parliament funk riffs and sass it up to perfection. And the greatest thing about Breakbot remixes? They are perfectly short. Delicious. Just right.

Saigon & Statik Selektah - Spit: I like the fusion of the old-school flute samples with that new school creeper funk bass with that after school scratch chorus.

The Temper Trap - Science Of Fear (Herve Dub): Herve is one hot mother houser, and a cheeky bugger too, so when you get the reversed guitar + shaker intros, and then the vocal lead-in... you're just waiting for the boom. There is supposed to be an earth SHATTERING KABOOM. And then oh shit, there it is. Kaboom. Yes! Herve takes a note from the dubstep bassheads and does a full frequency spectrum assload of bass for 30 seconds. Hot. (note: spellcheck does not recognize ‘assload’ as a valid English word. Fuck that!)

Timmy Vegas & Bad Lay-Dee - Another Dimension (Danny Byrd Dub Mix): Like Herve above, Danny Byrd is one of those people (Trevor Loveys another one) whom when you see their production credits on a remix, you have to flip to that single ASAP. There is a 50% change you might have gold, as opposed to the usual 1% chance in the quality-to-crap game that DJs play. We strike gold again, this time with time with some liquid tech-step awesome. Thank goodness Byrd had the foresight to release this dub version, because the full vocal version kind of sucks, even with Byrd behind the boards. No amount of awesome production could cover the cheese vocals. So what's the best solution? Ax the vocals altogether and get all ravey up in the place.

We have three hot new LPs to talk about this time, so let's get right in to it.

Aceyalone's new LP "The Lonely Ones" is his tribute to Doo-Wop and it is fun as hell. Doo-Wop's bubblegum sensibilities play really well in the tracks, producing some of the most digestible tracks since Cut Chemist's What The Altitude.
A super fun party, although a bit short, party album. Aww hell, who cares if it is a bit short. Definitely pick this one up.

I wasn't feeling much of the new Agf/Delay album "Symptoms", but this one track really got to me. I love haunted spoken vocals over minimal creeper beats.
I originally got in to AGF from their far more experimental soundscape albums of yore. It is kind of like she and Ellen Allien traded production directions and have met in the middle.

"My Maudlin Career" is the 2009 album from Camera Obscura and will be joining Antony And The Johnsons at the top of the "best of 2009" lists, mark my words.
A near perfect dream-pop album that avoids following the career slumps of Belle & Sebastian, their philosophical and stylistic peers. Recommended for fans of The Concretes, Belle & Sebastian, and dreamy summer folk music.
If French Navy doesn't make you want to dress up like a sailor and make-out with your best friends, there is something horribly wrong with you.
Highly recommended.

Curren$y - Scared of Monsters: Fuck yes, this track is so hot. I love the heavy goofy bass, and I can't stop thinking of the 1996 track "Hit 'Em High (The Monstars' Anthem)" when the chorus comes in. And we all know that's a good thing.

First Aid Kit - Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (Fleet Foxes cover): I have been enjoying First Aid Kit and was super happy to find this Fleet Foxes cover to share.

John Barry - Midnight Cowboy: I love this piece from the eponymous 1969 film. I first was exposed to it through the Faith No More cover, but the original is so much more heartbreaking.

Kenneth Bager - Fragment One (Style Of Eye Remix): A well programmed hot little bubble beat, and the adorable pop hook percolates from beneath. I love it.

Laura Marling - Ghosts: I haven't heard her 2008 full length "Alas, I Cannot Swim" yet, but this track is adorable, with it's chimes and guitar, and harmonies that remind me of 1970s Peter Paul & Mary.

Mr Miyagi - We Gonna Give You The Lesson: House can continue to astound after all these years. Witness the perfect slicing of chants, fidget bass, and salsa horns. Undeniably funky.

Ohbijou are from Canada, and you should know that we have been kicking butt for the last 15 years of indie music. "Beacons" is just another notch in the Soviet Canuckistan belt of awesomeness.
Be sure to catch this amazing band if you ever see them on a bill within a 4 hour drive. Highly recommended for anyone in to folk rock, rock folk, or beautiful music of any stripes.

Sebastien Tellier - Kilometer (A-Trak Dub): Somewhere along the line, A-trak went from being a wicka-wicka turntablist thuglet to being a half-decent producer. I'm not even typically a Sebastien Tellier fan, but A-Trak finds the pop groove admist the synth wizardry, and brings it to shine in the forefront. This is what Justice could sound like without the quadruple-distorted-kickdrum sidechaining. This track is confident in the fact that it is funky and sexy. Work it, girl!

Sigur Ros - Ti Ki: This track is a bit older, from the 2004 "Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do" EP. I love the minimal blips and the delicate piano that comes in to play. I like that there are no vocals. I like that there are no guitar swells and over-wrought dramatics. I like!

Tristan Gar - Cancun Paradise (Antoine Clamaran Remix Edit): We close things off with some more chanting electro house. S-E-X-X-Y.

Operating under the social radar of post-war Canada, Stone produced thousands of images of men—from Montreal bodybuilders to Pacific coast fishermen, from rodeo cowboys to the construction workers who built Expo 67. // Like his American contemporary, physique photographer Bob Mizer, Alan B. Stone was a cultural pioneer. Before the first wave of gay liberation, and long before Calvin Klein’s poster boys marched into public view, Stone was taking hundreds of erotic photos of men and running an international mail-order business from his Montreal basement.

Things start off wickeda hard here! The new Buraka Som Sistema album, "Black Diamond", is fucking AMAZING.
The perfect party album. Favela house and Baille funk and even some grime vocals from Virus Syndicate, continents away in the UK.
HIGHLY RECOMMENEDED.

I don't follow a tonne of metal/grindcore/screamo stuff. I am just not an angry person a need to vent cathartically. But on occasion I do enjoy sipping these genres like a fine glass of bourbon. Genghis Tron released "Board Up The House" in 2008 and as far as screamo alt metal goes, it didn't do much for me. (Mind you, little does in that area, so grab it if you are a metal fan.)
What really caught my attention though was the 5 EPs of remixes released, featuring an eclectic range of remixers. From the somewhat appropriate (Broadrick, Eluvium, Tobacco, Tim Hecker) to the surprising choices (DNTEL, Odd Nosdam, Subtle), as a series it is full of sonic surprises.
The first track I picked out here was the Justin K. Broadrick remix. Fuck all others, I skipped right to this track. Ex-Napalm Death drummer, he sucked me in to the Godflesh world with his 18 minute remix of Xnoybis in 1994. This act alone took post-industrial grind metal into the world of dubbed-out stonner experimentation. In my own little timeline, everyone from Sunn O))) to Lustmord to Tool owe their careers to that fateful Godflesh remix, and if you are interested in any of those musical veins, you should quickly track it down. Anyways, fast-forward 15 years and his remix here ressurects the same power.
Rob Crow delivers a remix thta reminds of the darker Patton-influenced Mr. Bungle jams. Top notch.

Here We Go Magic - Only Pieces: Here We Go Magic released their st album in 2009, but overall it didn't catch my ear beyond this initial single. This single though is a campfire-fun rounds singalong for anyone and everyone with an Animal Collective hipster beard. Grab a bongo and groom with pride!

Kj Sawka - Subconnectors (Press & Selfsimilar Remix): Sexy dubstep delves in to some moody 90s downtempo vibes. Top notch.

Loose Cannons - Why You: I dug this out of my old DJ crate! I had forgotten about this track. It's not too old, but sometimes the sands of culture fall through your fingers and you don't notice them until you are recovering from collapsing to the ground. (I love metaphors that don't really mean anything, because they end up meaning the MOST!) Electro funk groove sexiness.

Mount Kimbie - Maybes: Oh such beautiful IDM! From the 2009 Maybes EP, this gem should be on your alarm clock to wake you out of blissful slumbers each Sunday morning.

Royksopp - Vision One: Their 2009 album is Junior, and it's a quality outing. Problem is? Like Moby, it often sounds like prefab and perfectly produced electro pop ready for a TV commercial spot and/or fashion show montage. Recommended if you like their other stuff, but for me, I don't have the time to really devote to their album. This one track here catches me, with it's lovely saw wave grindsynth. Expect some hot remixes though.


After a few years of critical acclaim for his work with Alva Noto, pianist and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto releases a gem for 2009: "Out Of Noise". A solo outing, the years of collaboration have an obvious influence on his aesthetic with it's minimal constructions and focus on the beauties of each little sound. Always somewhat quiet, but a stylistic range that sweeps from Ekkehard Ehlers to Philip Glass to Windham Hill to his own works with Alva Noto, this album is recommended for any fans of quiet, beautiful ambient classical music.

Sukh Knight - Tricks Of Trade: Just another quality dubstep track!

V - Buried Behind the Church: Annoying titled "V" (yes, the quotations are part of their band name), We Are Crossing Fences Through Rocky Fields is a simple little 2008 post-rock ambient album. If you ever thought Godspeed You Black Emperor were good but didn't need the swells and should focus on the drone, this will be up your alley.

Waldeck - Defenceless (Thievery Corporation Remix): A throwback to finish things off, this is remix is from the 1999 album Balance Of The Force.

Z'ev - Opus 3 (CPI Edit)

This recording was created using Opus 3, performed by Z'ev, and released by Staalplat in 1990.
Opus 3 is a collection of five acts, each movement of which is a textured sound performance on a distinct medium.
While I loved the original recording, this edit captures how I liked to listen to it, and highlights my favourite portions.

This process arose from the liner note instructions "Oracular shuffle mode recommended":
The 13 most arrhythmic of the 20 track album were selected and underwent minor acoustical treatments.
3 random orders for the tracks were derived. One for the left, center and right channels.
The tracks were overlayed in their derived order in to each channel.
For audio clarity, minor EQ enhancements were utilized and compression was applied to the center track.
