Bouncer Crew - Smokesum ft Frank-N-Dank: From the 2007 album Xtasy for Ladies, this is the single standout to be found. The album is OK, but in an album that is all party and no studying, you often end up with one jam and then 11 or so hangovers.

Calvin Harris - Flashback: The new LP is Ready For The Weekend, and while the sophomore effort doesn't come to matching his debut, if you are a fan already you'll probably be super in to this. Me, I like some of it and worry he's heading in to Moby territory, releasing "generic electronica for white college kids". For Flashback here, I can appreciate him channeling that early 90s pop dancefloor. So sugary sweet, you don't even bother to worry if it's bad for you.

Down The Lees - Talk is Not Cheap: What starts off as a paint-by-numbers indie pop song sticks to it's structural roots and builds and builds upwards, adding more drums, more organ, more chants and OMG the bliss of the indie song because a mantra of ecstasy.

Jihae - Hide: I haven't heard the full-length Elvis Is Still Alive, but I can really appreciate the fusion of freakfolk swells and slide-guitar whine. But in the end, it makes me crave more Elizabeth Anka Vajagic, which takes this kind of music to it's sinister conclusions.

This is from their 2008 album A Thousand Shark's Teeth, and actually acts as a stylist precursor for this years album by The Decemberists! The Only Tune: Starting delicate and small, the vocal lines proves to be an unbreakable mantra that powers through treacherous and sentimental musical memories seeping here and there. We get to the end and nothing is accomplished, nothing has changed, but we made it and are better for it, surprisingly uplifted.

Red - I Should Tell Ya Momma On You (Chops Remix): Could this be the best single of 2009? Check youtube for the origin video of this guy, who walked up to the gates of (I think) Jay-Z's place and starts beatboxing and rapping for the guards while someone films him through the bars. The acapella beatbox is remarkable, but here Chops lays on some more melody and tightens things up, but dayyam good fun to be had here.

I have to listen to the new Mountain Goats LP The Life Of The World To Come a bit more before I deliver my own verdict on it. It doesn't conjure up the same emotional and narrative ride of the last 2 albums, but I haven't given up hope.
The two tracks here are the most engaging on the album, so expect much more mellow after these.
Each song is titled after a biblical passage, and the entire work has a much more straightforward and subdued tone to it. I haven't read the backstory, but there has probably been a funeral or two between this album and the last.

Chris Schlarb - I: aaaaand we slow things right down with this quaint textural classical/ambient piece from the 2007 album Twilight & Ghost Stories. Pieces like this sit like jazz on my brain. A smattering of somewhat disconnected-yet-interworking layers of guitar, piano, radio organ static, reverbed strings, wind chimes and field recordings sit perfectly on my weary head.

Discuss - One Thing In Its Right Place: Dope downtempo/IDM from the 2008 LP "Aeration Swells". The beat hooks you right from the get-go, the subdued background voice tries to work it's way to the forefront, and finally comes to attention but still lacks coherence.

Emmy The Great - We Almost Had A Baby: I was initially head-over-heels for this band based on the first few leaked singles. Their full length was a disappointment, I'll admit it. But when I take this song, and built a playlist with this, "Hold On" and "24", I get butterflies in my stomach and want to dance and cry at the same time. Keep your ears affixed, Emmy The Great are potentially poised for some miraculous.

Esso & Woody - Don't Stop: The MJ estate is working on high-profile massive budget reworks, but in the meantime the underground has reworked and sampled MJ a million times over, and here we are again, this time sampling some horns riffs from the disco era and laying lyrics on top.
Filastine - Blung: Always one worth checking out, the latest Filastine LP "Dirty Bomb" didn't grab me as a whole. But fret not, as this track has just the amount of innovation and swagger, ironically seemingly effecting some hypnotic swirls that are almost Muslimgauze-ish. Good stuff.
There's a certain naive bliss that is often missing from electronic music. The feelgood innocence found abstractly between the likes of Bran Van 3000, Pizzicato Five, and early 90s stabs at electro pop. That joy is honored hear on the Fol Chen album "The Longer U Wait".
A collection of remixes and reworks, it's not entirely consistent, but the joy of joys on here more than makes up for the few toss-offs. Sufjan Steven's label Asthmatic Kitty has put this out, and I think you can even download the whole thing from their web site.

Immortal Technique - The 3rd World: This is from the "The 3rd World" and I just love that super bass slam on every 4th beat. Political songs are always a contentious topic, but this avoids most of the common pitfalls that make most tracks like this embarrassingly unlistenable a year later.

I can't properly express my joy that the new Antlers album "Hospice" is finally here. It is to 2009 what Okkervil River's Black Sheep Boy was to 2005: An emotional, mature, engrossing work that will dominate melancholy mixtapes for the next decade.
We originally posted up some of The Antlers here back in January, then another in August, and here are two more. The song Shiva is especially brilliant, with it's creepy mysticism of the narrator transforming in to the victim, and them departing, leaving one abandoned. I must have dreamt with that metaphor at least once before because it resonates so damn strongly.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. One of the best albums of the year. A classic.

The Big Pink - Dominos: This is the kind of music that sounds "straight ahead" these days, radio-friendly pop rock but with enough of an edge that it immediately catches your ear.

"My Shit is Perfect" is the 2009 album from Mr. Bob Log the third, but only the 2nd song here is from that album. The first track, Boob Scotch, is from the 2003 album My Shit is Perfect. All of the maturity and refinement of early 90s Ween mixed with R.L. Burnside churning A-for-effort bluesy goodness.
And I think the idea of putting my breast into a scotch is kind of exciting. But that's just me.

Still good stuff, and it only goes to remind us we can never underestimate this man.

Steven R. Smith - Paths In The Bower: I found this album, "The Anchorite", almost by accident, and I had to do an audio double-take because I was just ready to move on. But something snagged me and anchored me inwards, and a beautiful sound-world unfolded. Sitting in the realm of stunning soundtrack composition with the likes of Jonathan Bepler and Max Richter, he mixes up avant soundscapes with ambient textures, all with an epic sense of scale and imagery. Highly recommended, if the preceeding sentence doesn't sound terrifying to you.

"My Shit is Perfect" is the 2009 album from Mr. Bob Log the third, but only the 2nd song here is from that album. The first track, Boob Scotch, is from the 2003 album My Shit is Perfect. All of the maturity and refinement of early 90s Ween mixed with R.L. Burnside churning A-for-effort bluesy goodness.
And I think the idea of putting my breast into a scotch is kind of exciting. But that's just me.

Final Fantasy - Blue Imelda: This is from last year's "Spectrum, 14th Century" EP release. 2008 was a quizzical change of gears for Owen Pallett fans, but I'm sticking with him. I of course wanted the strings, but here we find steel drums and horns sounding like they are straight from a Beirut album. Still good stuff, and it only goes to remind us we can never underestimate this man.

Steven R. Smith - Paths In The Bower: I found this album, "The Anchorite", almost by accident, and I had to do an audio double-take because I was just ready to move on. But something snagged me and anchored me inwards, and a beautiful sound-world unfolded. Sitting in the realm of stunning soundtrack composition with the likes of Jonathan Bepler and Max Richter, he mixes up avant soundscapes with ambient textures, all with an epic sense of scale and imagery. Highly recommended, if the preceeding sentence doesn't sound terrifying to you.

blog 2009/08/24 - An ipecac or a smorgasbord. MP3s for your face.
Bibio have been stacking great reviews for their 2009 album Ambivalence Avenue and it's got some next-level shit on it. But it's also a bit of a snoozer. I'll level with you, it's not close to Boards Of Canada in terms of beatsmithing, and not even near Flying Lotus, who barely output a cohesive listen.
Definitely an interesting LP to dig for beatheads, but like Prefuse-73 and Machine Drum, it doesn't hold up as a solidified sonic world and will be remembered for a single or two come 2012. Fire Ant here is the standout for me, with seductive cutups and talkbox distortion.

Cortney Tidwell is representing here with 2 tracks from her 2009 album "Boys". The production here is wonderful, taking a great singer-songwriter aesthetic and filtering through a Morr Music rackmount in one track, and borrowing the St. Vincent mastering studio for others.
The album as a whole didn't melt my world, but I just know that I will be enjoying it on and off for the next 6 months. If these 2 tracks speak to you, definitely track down the album and get rewarded.

Eskmo - Agnus Dei: Eskmo (formerly Eskimo; hurray for Googleable names!) is here to kick our collective asses with the subwoofer. Up in the leagues of subheavy production that is only resided in by the likes of Rusko, Various Productions and DZ, Eskmo has one of the most original dubstep voices out there. (OK, most original next to Various Productions, who are currently top of tops. see below) Eskmo has a tonne of tracks up for purchase at Beatport.com, so go buy everything he's done. And at least the angels will have something awesome to bump when the apocalypse reigns down on us all.

I hadn't heard James Blackshaw before, and his 2007 LP "The Cloud Of Unknowing" just has me floored. Classical 12-string guitar wunderwalls of sounds and depth swirl over you. With a sense of delicateness borrowed from Loren Mazzacane Connors and stamina that would make Terry Riley applaud, this album is a remarkable instrumental work. Highly recommended.
If I had a magic wand that shot out fairy dust and performed non-consensual magical modification on you, the "shooting fairy dust" soundtrack would be James Blackshaw. (the dust would move slowly, k?)

I have always thought the world of Mexican electronic musician Murcof, ever since I first bought his debut LP Martes.
In a smart move, a producer finally hired him for soundtrack work, doing the entire score for Enlightened Blood (La Sangre Iluminada).

Murcof's soundtrack work follows the similar orchestral glitch of the past 7 years, but included here is a special remix included on the soundtrack release that is just divine. Highly recommended: both the soundtrack, and the movie.

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Starsmith Remix ft Ellie Goulding): OK, I know there have been a bajillion Passion Pit remixes on here, but I keep getting surprised. History has shown that most invigorating thing to do for both your fans and your career is to release all of the components of your song and let everyone and anyone remix them. This results in a glut of shitty remixes, but results in a few choice ones too. But woah there lassie, what we have here is the most radical result of that experiment yet: A total vocal reworking of Sleepyhead with the falsetto being replaced with a woman, and the detuned bass chorus being replaced with a man.

Radiohead - Harry Patch (In Memory Of): Partch died like 25 years ago come September 3rd, so time for another memorial. Radiohead continues with their online trends, releasing this on their website for pay-what-you-can, so go get a higher quality copy there if you want. Bred of Skull Disco mutations, Rusko basslines and Funkstorung edges, I have been so amazed by their output in the last year. Top drawer, all the way. Oh wait a sec, let's toss Cat Power in to a song and make you wet your pants. This is as awe-inducing as when Karmacoma was first released.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Everlasting Gobstopper: I am an avid collector of 50s/60s/early 70s electro-acoustic music, and the 1971 release date of this film marks it perfectly for my interests. The sounds of the Everlasting Gobstoppers machine are a delightful concrete wonder, mixing traditional foley work with a Warner Bros 1940s aesthetic. It is joyous complexities like this that we don't perhaps notice as youth, but are super fun to rediscover later on.

I had been looking for an opportunity to post this, and what better time to do so then for my birthday?
A special album, a delectabley stinky cheese mix from the past.
You got Dance Mix '92 back here, but now it is time for...

Released by Much Music in 1990, this cassette will be a rare find for anyone that didn't grow up in Canada in the late 80s/early 90s.
Sure, it was also available on CD, but you need that cassette fuzz for the true party rocking experience.

blog 2009/08/18 - The aching fingers should never be placed in the ears!
Hello! I wanted to get this out sooner, but my life is incredibly busy, so they fall as they may.
I was happy to get a message from Ana Pettinari, whose stirring sone "El ciclo" was featured in the 2009/08/05 edition here. I loved loved loved the song (if you haven't listened to it a million times, do so now!) but didn't understand the words.
She is from Argentina, and of the song she writes a concise explanation: "It talks about some feelings or ideas that come over and over, taking away the calm."
And now, on to the new music...
Arms - Kids Aflame: Arms is intelligently written and delightfully stripped down in it's execution. The core aspects of a good pop song are refined, polished, and then warbled for good measure. No attempts are made to overproduce, just to let the craft speak for itself.

Basement Jaxx - Get Me Off (Elected 2009 Remix): This will get noted as probably the most interesting dubstep remix I have ever heard. It incorporates Jaxx samples from a few places, and weaves them almost like a megamix, but crafting something whole and intriguing. This Elected person is snazzy. I want more.

Boat Beam - The Rain Pauly: From the 2009 album "Puzzles Shapes", this catchy and quaint number is an understated pleaser.

Copeland - The Grey Man: Sitting in that somewhat vague post-Coldplay space, Copeland occupies a similar space that Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun did in the early 90s: If you have a THIS shaped whole inside you, you will love it dearly. If not, you might just not be able to let yourself fall for emo-tinged crooning.

Crush Buildings - Ghoul Pounds: This one is just beautiful. Intricate percussion comes from a few sources and helps weaves a hypnotic click-track for the reaching and understated vocals that really pull everything together. Is that flute on there, too? Wow and apparently these people are from Ottawa. Top notch.

Dom & Black Sun Empire - Sparta: I just couldn't resist. I am loving Dom's latest album Through The Looking Glass and what do I choose? Some of the cheesier techstep. But oh forgive me, for the sheer necessity of meme propagation was too great. Pour some out for Sparta. And get the 2007 Dom album, it’s super fun.

Late of the Pier - Bathroom Gurgle (Breakbot Remix): I was a bit shocked to hear how true to the original this Breakbot remix is, especially considering their other staggeringly awesome reworks. But all the right tweaks are in all the right places, equaling a big awesome rocking track.

Marina & The Diamonds - Obsessions: I am in love with this CD. It sounds like something written by Regina Spektor, sung by Kate Nash, and with confidence boosting drugs provided by Amanda Palmer. This is almost a guilty obsession because you just know it will blow-up once it is discovered and be bought up for some cell-phone commercial. Enjoy it while you can!

But don't be fooled: Gui has always been at the forefront of the electro world, giving us more unique and ground-breaking tracks than any AliveGoo5 approximation could ever muster. Another track of blissout tech.

Harlem Shakes sit on the tip of your tongue. They remind you of so many other great rock bands with a strong pop lean, but you get apprehensive naming similarities. So many things fit, and so many of those so many fits don't fit quite too well. They don't do it justice.
Recommended for fans of Pavement, The National, They Might Be Giants, The Mountain Goats, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. uggh whatever. "Technicolor Health" is the new album. And it's good.

They also raise the bar by covering Aphex Twin's Bucephalus Bouncing Ball! I double-dare Sunn O))) to cover any of Come To Daddy. Aphex Twin hasn't sounded this good since Dillinger Escape Plan covered
him. Well, or since the 90s.
Recommended for all fans of post-rock and instrumental prog rock.

"So Far Gone" is Drake's new LP and it's pretty chill. I'm pretty picky with hiphop (can you guess?) and so a bunch of it came off as juvenile and unrefined, but there are a few sweetspots.
Obviously Kanye-influenced, but in a good way, he even inserts himself in with Lykke Li. And don't worry, he pulls it off. Well played, sir!

Well after an appropriate number of years, he re-emerges! And lo', he has some dompe remixes in tow on the Dancehall Of The Dead album.
Cardopusher hits us with some darkstep bassy monster movie fun. Mr. Wobble's Nightmare parodies the classic 4 Hero track from about 18 years ago, but cranking up the BPM and squelching out the breaks'n'bass.

Phatcat & DZ - Shadows: Ottawa-based DZ turns in another scorcher. Appropriately following the Mr. Kird do-over above, this track digs back to the early 90s hardcore classic Valley of The Shadows by Origin Unknown and reworks it for the 21st century dubstep heads. Solid.

St. Vincent - Actor Out Of Work: I hadn't loved the new St. Vincent as much as everyone else, but I thought I'd toss you another one of their gems since I listened to this one again, this time from their 7" EP release. This tracks captures some of the magic of their earlier LP, but in slightly noisier form.

I found this book at a local library. It was in German, so I didn't really understand it, but was filled with large pages of triangles and warped squares, all overlayed. Hurray for avant-garde geometric scores!
The 10" was insert in the back sleeve of the book and features some wild music. And believe me, I own many many records of 60s/early-70s synth music, and the compositions here are in legion with the wildest. One of the most satisfying releases of all my 60s/70s contemporary electronics.

Dance Mix 1992 baaaaayyyyybeeeee!
I am going to start posting up some albums that I digitize from various sources. Most of these will be oddball or experimental things, but let's get the ball rolling with a classic:
Dance Mix '92!
I first posted this to my MP3 blog (thus the odd filename in the link) but it absolutely warrants the heraldry involved in inaugurating my dump of rare albums.
Is this rare? Well, rare enough! Everyone who owned this assuredly played the shit out of the cassette, and if you were cool enough to have the tape it probably scratched to hell from DJing every hot elementary school party you were at.
Mind you, the "Dance mix" series were a Canadian phenomenon. See that logo in the upper left? That's Much Music. That's the Canadian version of the old MTV that used to play music videos.
So for any non-Canucks out there, this might be a something entirely new. Dizzingly new. Pure ambrosia of new. BUCKETS FULL OF WIN. DO YOU UNDERSTAND???
My rip here is from an old cassette tape loaned to me by a beautiful gay man who kept this treasure for 17 long years. Steven, my gratitude!

Let's get to it quickly now. I have been listening to a lot of music and not posting enough to quell the flow. The result is a high-pressure backlog of awesomesauce. Ready?
Get your best of 2009 lists ready, because there certainly needs to be a place for Bitte Orca on it. The new album by the Dirty Projectors is remarkable and a joy.
Totally innovative and eclectic, but also accessible and readily addictive. Highly recommended!

Dringe Augh is from Korea, and while I hate to get all "oooo neato" because of point-of-origin, I admittedly have little Korean music. This track is from his 2009 EP Individually Wrapped, and is delicate and charming.

Gossip - Heavy Cross (Burns Remix): Remix of a single from the new album Music For Men. Expect more tracks up here from that LP, but I thought I'd kick off with this subdued-yet-divine remix.

The Japandroids are another winner. The vocals have that muted-hallway Fugazi and the production is thunderous like early 90s math-punk. Their 2009 album Post-Nothing is a winner. If you are or ever were a fan of Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, Archers of Loaf, or any of those intersections, I highly recommend you grab this album.

JDP - I Was On It: I've never heard this guy before, but it's some tight production, inoffensive verses and good flow.

Jokers of the Scene - Annie Mac Show Mini Mix: a 5-minute minimix that shows off these Ottawa producers. Not a track unto itself, but a great piece of heat to add to your "at the gym" mix.

Kanji Kinetic - The Buffalo VIP: Some heavy-ass garage servings going on here, with cheeky sample usage that would even make a gabber producer smile. Goodness!

Little Boots - New In Town: I have to say I was disappointed with much of the Little Boots LP, especially after some crazy underground remixes. But this single is unavoidabley addictive. Give it a chance!

Major Lazer is a cheeky collab between Diplo and Switch and their 2009 LP "Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do" is getting a lot of hype. OK so I didn't think it was 100% solid, but I rarely ever take albums like this as a whole, instead just harvest some singles.
Mad props for auto-tuning the baby on the first track here. Much of the album is a bit harder, so I def wanted to include Can't Stop Now as a taste of the mellower grooves.
And then last but not least, Ottawa producer extraordinaire DZ turns in a massive remix of the first single, Hold The Line. With a billion remixes of this track available, this is one of the tightest out there.

Mr. Chop - Snob: It has been a long time since we posted up some organic funk breaks on here, so let me rectify that with this hot little number of live drum chopping and mad flute licks.

Nas - Hope (Beirut Remix): Is this the Beirut we all know and love? The baroque/folk wunderkind? I doubt it, but lucky for them the producer creds caught my attention, and while there are no Mexican horns on the track, it's a slick and poignant single.
Sarah Boothroyd - Some Sort of Dark Force: What's this? Another OTTAWA person? Yeegads, 3 in one post!
I had no idea this woman was from Ottawa, but hers was the strongest track from the Deep Wireless 3 compilation, a free release of contemporary radio art.
Highly recommended if you like the experimental sounds arts.

blog 2009/07/19 - What is David Byrne doing in my closet?
That guy is just everywhere. Whether slipping himself in to house music, busting shit up in indie venues, or hiding in fumigated storage lockers, David Byrne seems everywhere these days.
Let's not forget his amazing collab with Eno last year that gave us "Strange Overtones", an instant classic. And he's even been on The Simpsons!
This guy is just simply unavoidable. But he knew that. He knew he had me with his herky-jerky dancing in Once In A Lifetime. That bastard!
Well in this update we find him, lastly, on a track with X-Press 2.... and it works!
Firstly, he is part of the indie-god caucus that rules via the new compilation "Dark Was The Night". Take your indie-love-in-masturbatory-dream-list, collect all of the artists, and toss them on one album.
Make a few interact, just for fun.
I can't recommend this album enough: Dark Was The Night is a fantastic work of organizing, songwriting, and it even benefits an HIV/AIDS organization.
The tracks here from the comp are by Antony and Bryce Dessner, Buck 65 & Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti, Dirty Projectors and David Byrne, The Decemberists, and finally The National.
But you know what? This is only a small sliver of the awesome contained within. OK, Cat Power and Iron & Wine don't hit their full potential, but any minor dubs are quickly eclipsed by the immensity of WIN here.

2009 brings a new Ad•ver•sary album. Entitled "A Bright Cut Across Velvet Sky", it's mostly a remix album, but with a couple entirely new tidbits in there. Kind of like the odds-and-sods halo numbers that would come after any Nine Inch Nails LP. For those that like the cutting edge of industrial goodness, this is basically your Further Down The Spiral. Recommended.

Ellie Goulding is by-and-far the delicious pop jewel of the moment. I can't get enough of these two tracks. Just as good or even better than the genius of La Roux, these tracks will be on my singles of the summer list. So incredibly addictive!

Frightened Rabbit remind me of the lush songwriting and savoury cadences of The Twilight Sad. The big difference is that the post-rockisms are absent, leaving it just the heart-wrenching indie melancholy. A touch of the Damien Rice, a touch of the Twilight Sad, and probably a few perfect couple of songs for your next drinking-n-crying mixtape. "The Midnight Organ Fight" is the album. Highly recommended.

Kaki King - Life Being What It Is: I love delicate pop like this, and it helps that it reminds me a bit of Eric's Trip "deep in the bedroom" kind of an affair. OK, well at least until the wonderful background strings come in. That'd be one big bedroom. Who cares, we're in love.

Music of the Central African Pygmies - Men's Elephant-Hunting Song: This track is startlingly awesome. The complexity and hypnotic interplay of this chant is one thing. The building storm in the background just makes it that much more perfect. And to top it all off? It ends with the hugest thunderstorm crescendo! This is from the 1995 release "Music of the Central African Pygmies", collecting recordings from over 40 years of Pygmies of the Ituri rainforest in Central Africa.

Sam Amidon - Little Johnny Brown: I love the feeling of this, like it's one long sinister roots-n-whisky chant. An exorcism in a divebar? who knew!

blog 2009/07/16 - A little something special for that special spot deep inside special you.
What's been happening?
I've been busy!
Ottawa Bluesfest has been keeping me ridiculously busy, and that is even WITH me skimping on concerts.
The highlight was seeing Ornette Coleman live! He was 12 feet from me! eEEEEEE!
I also saw great performances by Iron & Wine, Okkervil River, Neko Case, and King Sunny Ade & his African Beats and so much more.
Good times!
I haven't been doing many "theme" postings as of late, but I noticed I had enough experimental stuff sitting in the "totally awesome must post" folder. To spare those of you that aren't too adventurous and are only here for the pop, this post will run the range from ambient, to metal, to experimental to IDM.
If you like interesting sounds, be sure to grab this post. If you only like the verse/chorus/verse or beat/breakdown/beat shiz, feel free to skip.

DJ Sega - Dig: While it might tarnish the image of "hardness", there is something so goofy and silly fun about metal electro. Putting a booty-clap under a death metal scream? GENIUS!

One of the most astounding finds recently has been Eluvium's Life Through Bombardment box set. Released as a massive and exquisite 7 LP set, this tome covers the entire recorded output of Eluvium. Much of it is rich hypnotic ambience, with lots of acoustic piano and atmospheric sound art to boot. One of the few times I can honestly say I have say down with a set longer than 3 CDs and been captivated the whole way through.
Highly recommended.

Gnaw Their Tongues - Rife With Deep Teeth Marks: Oooh this one kind of came at me out of nowhere. I am totally unfamiliar with the band, but this track perfectly blends drone textures with slow-grind metal and noisy screeching. A winner.

I stumbled on these Grey Gersten tracks by accident. He recently curated a month at The Stone, the artist focused performance space run by John Zorn in NYC. Think The Knitting Factory, only cooler.
He does some brilliant sound-art and is apparently also a filmmaker.

The first Grouper album was all the rage, but it didn't rise above the level of many similar albums that were released at the same time. The track here is from their 2009 album Way Their Crept and continues with what they do best: Spooky reverbed lofi washouts. I love the primitiveness of it. It's like recordings I used to make in my bedroom, except this person can actually sing.

Jacaszek's album "Treny" is from 2008 and was a stunning surprise. The first thing it establishes for itself is the sheer quality of it's sound and production. Fusing ambience with clicks-n-cuts and IDM, the album doesn't rest in any genre-specific conventions. It delights me like in that same way when you first heard Murcof. Highly recommended.

Moderat wins for the goofiest album cover of the year with their 2009 self-titled album, featuring a woman punching her own nose on the cover. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN??? A slick album with tight production credentials, only a few of the songs really jumped at me in terms of composition. Recommended for you to sift through online at places like Beatport and buy the gems. Moderat is still riding that high-water mark of IDM production, so best not miss this wave.

Peter Rehberg's "Work For GV 2004-2008" album is another delightful surprise. As you might guess from an album collecting works for film, the cinematic expanses and dramatic flairs in the tracks are high. Some seriously depressing/disturbed spoken word bits anchor the record with a narrative, but for me it is the textural rumbling tracks that truly shine. Highly recommended for fans of O.S.T., post-industrial soundscapes, and disturbing sounds to play at Halloween.

The internet just won't shut up about Sunn O))), but not without due reason. They have been kicking butt and chewing gum for years now with a heavy release schedule and lots of touring. Their 2009 LP Monoliths & Dimensions has been praised out the wazzoo, so really, why don't you have it yet? What is you dysfunction? If you have been put off by the metal-tude of them before, this record ups the "ecstatic reverb" knob and features chanting and some bliss-out chords. Same sort of song structure as previous records, but you can tell they have been listening to lots of Bohren & Der Club of Gore, and that's always a good thing.

I just wanted to throw some mad shoutouts to Hintonburg: The ultimate place for NGO hipsters to raise children. You rock!

Bassnectar - Art of Revolution: I always love it when a blog starts with a track like this. Pure dubstep cheeze perfection. Hard slamming bass, rad samples looped with just the right repetition, and a subbass squelch that could make it fit in to a chiller dubstep set or a streetbass party. It seems that Bassnectar, who once did more glitchy breaks-n-bass, have gone the same route as almost every single other beats producer: dancey dubstep. I guess go where the Beatport money is, right? At least it is quality, as there is more than enough poor dubstep out there.

Dada Life - Happy Hands & Happy Feet: We keep things popping at a steady butt-jiggle pace here. Dada Life is one of my favourite electrohouse producers, churning out a number of high quality dancefloor classics. They always go out of their way to make ridiculously happy songs too. This would be a gamble for a lesser producer, but they pull off this delirious feat with gurning glee. Glowsticks for everyone!

Dan Deacon - Build Voice: Dan Deacon is that post-rave hipsterism that has been the hallmark of every "hipster electronica" album, and marks that moment in their young lives where they discovered new places they could insert their glowsticks. After that, it was all downhill. They fell in to years of jadedness and snark. Only once they came to embrace that inner glowstick again were they able to come forth, beards and all, and shout "I'm here, I use glowsticks as a buttplug, and I wish it wasn't creepy someone my age to rave!" And huzzah, joyous hipster electronica came to the clubs. Now all of the kids that once raved no longer have good hookups for their drugs and just drink and wiggle to Dan Deacon et all. It's not a bad life, just don't expect him topping my best of 2009 list. Would you ever expect plaid at a rave?

Dead Prez vs Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks Of Hip Hop: The mashup fell out of popular favour once everyone realized that novelty alone wasn't enough to make 2 songs work together. Mind you, it wasn't rocket science: You just needed basic production skills, some musical and technical tastefulness, and voila. I am overjoyed that the deluge of mashups fell out of grace (and Soulwax went on to do something new and awesome) and now we just have occasional trickles. In this post Grey Album world, I point to mashups like this as examples of the bland process executed correctly. Take notes.
Don Diablo - Pussycat Too ft Example: This gets my vote as the most amusing hiphop song of 2009 so far. "Example" (uggh get a better MC name, please!) weaves a blurry metaphor of him vs women as dogs vs cats. The fuzzy lines between his metaphorical constructs and his furry fandom fantasies just make it that much more twisted and raw. Break out the fun-fur and get funky.

Grizzly Bear will be on almost every "best of 2009" list with their new LP Veckatimest. And you know what? So will Phoenix with their "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix".
Both albums are immediately accessible and catchy. Both have great song writing and production values.
Grizzly Bear has a bit more of an indie nod and veers slightly in to the Animal Collective style chord structures. Phoenix has more catchy vocals leaning towards Vampire Weekend style twee blissout, but mixed with a maturity that would appeal to any fan of The National or Peter Gabriel.
Both albums are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I have been listening to a lot of Morton Feldman lately. This 20th century composer was especially known for his minimalist constructions and sometimes enduringly long pieces, some 6 hours or more.
I haven't been listening to a specific album in particular, but a number of his albums simultaneously. Literally: Layering them on top of each other with multiple players going.
The piece here is from Crippled Symmetry, a wonderfully meditative work which, while not exactly game-changing in his oeuvre, is one of the most heralded examples.

Randy Newman - A Few Words In Defense Of Our Country: OK, I never would have expected to see this hear either. My only real reference to Randy Newman is the parody of him on Family Guy. (left foot right foot left foot right foot)
I was a bit shocked to see such glowing reviews of his 2008 album Harps and Angels, and so I had to check it out. While I can't get behind it as a whole, it was a surprise at how palatable his ramshackle rambling rants were. He has one song on it that is a total copy of Tom Waits "Picture In A Frame", which is actually a bit good, and the rest is a somewhat-awkward somewhat parodying slice of storyteller Americana. Not essential, but certainly curious.

Tarek Mansur - Destined: This is the kind of record that would get me all wet. You'd go in to your local record store and you'd dig through a crate of vinyl ambiguously titled "Electronic" and you'd find this odd EP at the back with an odd-yet-interestingly designed cover and an unknown name, on an unknown label. You'd take it up to the turntable and get floored. One side would be lush abstract soundscapes, and the other would be a dark mindfuck IDM revolution. This is the record that would make your day of vinyl buying complete, and would be the ultimate thing to get high to in your dark glowing basement. Highly recommended. Tarek Mansure is good times.

The Acorn - Good Enough (Cyndi Lauper cover): What a surprise this was! Another little treat from Ottawa's best band, and one the greatest exports Canada has to offer. They are touring with the likes of Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Calexico now. Hopefully this will calm our nerves until they return safe and sound.

"Thefreehoudini" is the new album from Themselves, and cleverly so, it is available free online. With a deep roster of guests (including bigger names like Slug and Aesop Rock), it is a must-have. The tracks I chose to include here have lesser-known MCs guesting, but to me they are the standouts. It is so good to hear Lionesque back in action, 11 years after first appearing on Dose One's Hemispheres.
Highly recommended for anyone in to abstract hiphop.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - There Is No Light: This organic duo pulses and swells. This is the most infectious throbbing music I have heard in a long time. With the orgiastic fever of Yoko Ono in her prime, but with quality song writing and DIY lust. Another perfect way to leave you.
