To start, I want to review my favourite producers of the year, the hottest mixtapes, and the reissues and collections that I am most thankful for.

MY FAVOURITE PRODUCERS OF 2010

I wanted to include this for the hit makers that don't always produce the amazing full lengths, but give us a steady stream of amazing singles and hot productions.
Alphabetical order!

Alias:  Ever since Alias stopped rapping and focused on the beats he and Ant have been the glue that kept Anticon so dope.  This year Alias did an incredible job on B. Dolan's "Fallen House Sunken City" and I flipped when I found that the instrumental version came out.  Because event when Dolan ever faltered on a rhyme, the beats were always brilliant.  I love how it's all so well put together, but at the same time it still has the aesthetic where you can close your eyes and see him performing live on an MPC2000.

Basti Grub:  Electronic music is SO DISPOSABLE, especially the likes of techno and house and such.  Normally there is just so much stuff out that you don't even bother with producers, since you're sifting 100 tracks to find one nugget.  But Basti Grub kept popping up in my "holy shit!" bin.  I took notice.  Perfectly lofi vocal ctups, a plodding rhythmatism that evokes Shackleton's crew, but all underpinned with crazy solid deep house essentials.

Claude VonStroke:  This man has been putting shit-eating grins on everyone subwoofer owning music afficionado for a few years now.  The way his bass just BOUNCES instead of slaps.  The way his groove is paramount.  He's on a level of his own.

Danny Byrd:  Danny Byrd is obviously a jungle afficionado with crates as deep as mine.  His productions span the history of jungle, from '91 hardcore to '94 ragga to '98 tech to the modern age of sidechain overload with dubstep bass swams.  It's all hear.   The rave pianos, the bass bubbles that are just veering North of splitting off to Happy Hardcore, the ragga choruses, the amen smashes, the floor-killing hoovers, the pills, the pants, the neon, omg omg omg omg *asplode*               ....I'll be over there in cuddle puddle.

Don Diablo:  So let's see.  Here we have this mastermind flipping the Moby rave classic into a modern D&B smasher.  Tweaking the new Chemical Brothers into a DaftPunkian ecstatic groove.  And beyond that, dropping a track which is probably my favourite Dragonette track since I Get Around?  This is on one trick pony.   The dance floors are getting it from all sides.

DZ:  Dubstep was declared dead early last year, but that was just because of the glut of shit producers.   DZ reminds us that the news of dubstep death has been exagerrated.  Not only has he been producing a constant stream of chart-topping bangers, but he did the unthinkable:  releasing "The Proliferation Sequence", an incredible 2 CDs of modern dubstep mastery.  Some context:  Producer albums are mostly garbage.  A few hot singles padded with B-side filler.  It's really fucking hard for a producer to create a captivating listening experince.  But here was a 2 CD set that kept keeping things hot and fresh.  Before the first disc was done, it was worth the price of admission.  The 2nd CD was just gravy.

El-P:  El Producto has been one of the hottest producers for over a decade.  What this person can do with an old organ, a drum kit and a sampler should, in a just world, meltdown every computer with Fruityloops installed for a few miles from his proximity.  Apparently he even had a new album and his HD fubared, and he didn't have it backed up?  OK, that was stupid of him.   But almost as if in an act of mourning, he gives us the hot beat tape Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3.  If these are toss offs from his studio playtime, the new album in 2011 is going to make me spasm in delight.

Nero:  Blending dubstep with garage and sex, I've been focused on Nero remixes for a while now.  There is no song he can't improve on.  And he doesn't just take a song, rip a few samples, and drop them in his template.  He seems to really love his source material and builds a structure that lets it shine.  Shine in a basspounding kind of way, of course.

Treasure Fingers:  Whenever I heard a Treasure Fingers production I totally think of people candy-flipping and spazzing out with glowsticks.  Not that there is anything really ravey going down, it's just the sheer joy and energy that floods from his tracks.    It's like what Kissy Sellout should have been.  I think of all the producers this year, Treasure Fingers is the one who most deserves to have an entire exercise program developed around their catalouge.

Chiddy Bang - Air Swell Mixtape
It is kind of awkward that Chiddy Bang's best works comes when he's riding on top of someone else's pop-culture gems.  Wait for a hit, jack a part for the beat, or jack the whole song and insert yourself remix style.  Ethical or not, his late-period Warholian take on party hiphop IS FUN.  That's why these are mixtapes, though.  Grab your favourite songs, stick 'em together, and add your own little flair.  Hella fun.

Four Tet - FACT Mix 182
After so much output in 2010, this mix is fabulous for the reason alone that it gives us insight in to Kieran's playlist.  The mixing isn't as tight as it could be, but there are some fabulously quirky bouncey tracks going on here.

James Holden - DJ Kicks
I always grit my teeth when entering a new DJ Kicks album since they tend to be such a mixed back, but James Holden renews my faith in the storied institution with the most shocking high-profile mix this year.  Focused on the mood more than on the dancefloor, al sorts of textures are in the works here.  The blips, the rock beats, the squiggly electro-light, the dubby electronics, etc.    I hereby declare this to be a fabulous mix to play strategy games by!

Justin Martin - Five Years Of Dirtybird
From the triple CD godsend available at http://www.dirtybirdrecords.com/5-years-of-dirtybird Justin Martin kills it, even though he's just riding the Dirtybird catalouge.  Total killer minimal bouncey tech house.  Oh so fucking good.

OK OK, let's get it over with.  It's fucking dense.  His favourite hiphop is full of bullshit assholes that deserve divine retribution.  His live shows are full of bullshit assholes that deserve comeuppins.  But there's no denying his total love of wheezy pop vomit, and he puts it together in a way that you don't even taste the neon.  Get it all at http://illegal-art.net/allday/

MY FAVOURITE REISSUES OF 2010

Elliott Smith - An Introduction to... Elliott Smith
FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW, ONLY:  Elliott Smith was the ultimate in emo folk in the 90s.  He was so fucking hardcore that in the end he killed himself...  BY STABBING HIMSELF IN THE HEART.  WTF???  Keep that in mind as you listen to his genius.  If you don't know Elliott Smith, you need this collection right now.

MF Doom - DOOM!
40 tracks of total DOOM?  77 minutes long though, so nothing sits around too long, and it turns out it's one of the best ways to really soak in the doom.  Let him flip the beats, screw the flow, and 2 minutes later we're back at it in a new way.  This is a collection of rarities and unreleased, but ends up being one of my favourite Doom CDs.

Pavement - Quarantine The Past
Pavement was the definition of indie rock in the 90s, and the worst of whom singlehandedly fueled Pitchfork, it seems.  I never got it.  THEY WEREN'T THAT GOOD!   They were good, maybe even great, but fuck, the worship of them drove me crazy.  Thank goodness for greatest hits collections!  This collects all of the goods.  For people like me who only really liked Brighten The Corners and Slanted & Enchanted as total album works, it's a sigh of relief and a totaly pleasure.  If you haven't heard Pavement yet, you are probably 25 years old or younger.  Now's a time to start.

Refused - The Shape Of Punk To Come
When this originally came out in 1998 I was out of punk rock.  Like most kids in the 90s in high school, there was much Fugazi, NOFX, Propagandhi and Dead Kennedys.  By the time 1998 came around I was mostly listening to IDM and noise and drone, but I am so happy I at least discovered this one 12 years after the fact.  Also includes a second disc of live versions, which is probably the best recorded punk show I've ever heard.  Like seriously, kudos to the live engineer and everyone on the boards and the mics.

CPI - Live at Once In A Blue Moon, Oakland CA, 2010-11-20

Previously if someone asked me what my dream setup would be I would always semi-seriously describe a room that was basically a huge speaker, filled with blankets and pillows, and that was basically this place Iwas in.  I was experiencing my favourite tracks in a way in which I never had before, and probably will never be able to replicate again.

I performed 2 sets, and I recorded them both.  I am not releasing them officially on my website, but they will be online until the end of 2010, so grab them now if you want them.
They contain some familiar songs, as I was hired by someone who was a fan of specific mixes.  I will often agree to perform in a different country if you are able to cover all expenses, so take note.

blog 2010/11/26 - we're going to buckle down and produce rainbows

I've got to get focused!  I had a blast in Oakland, and I recorded my sets there.  I'm in the process of mastering them and getting them online.  They will hopefully be up as limited edition special treats for the holidays.

My eyes are also on the calendar, with December fast approaching.  I have been listening to the last few albums in my "omg must hear this" box and my declaration of favourite albums of 2010 is forming organically.

So while all this spins around in my mind, I want to drop another post of new goodness.  Enjoy!


Autre Ne Veut - Two Days Of Rain:  I listen to this and I think of a masculine Annie Lennox.  Or a contemporary Human League.  Epic 80s pop for the 21st century.

Belleruche - Anything You Want (Not That) (Hint Remix):  Hint has been bopping out Mr. Scruff-esque downtempo bass music for years, and fit perfectly on top of the soulful Belleruche.  Probably my favourite thing off the dope new Liberty EP.

Crystal Castles - Baptism (Punks Jump Up Remix):  Punks Jump Up have always been one of my favourite remixes for giving something that raw indie rock flair that still pumps the dancefloor.  Taken from the Baptism single, this is probably my favourite Crystal Castle remix of the year.  And there's have been a number of good ones.

Deluka vs Mike Snow - OMFG Animal:  Two fabulous pop songs that fuse really well.  Mike Snow's piano riffs are some of the happiest out there.

Generationals - When They Fight They Fight:  With all of the golly-gee-whiz goodness of a 60s radio pop group!

GR†LLGR†LL - Utta:  Witch House is the stupidest genre name since Intelligent Dance Music came around.  It's neither witchy nor housey.  Discuss.  But if anyone asked for an example of witch house, I think GR†LLGR†LL would be the perfect example.  From the self-titled album, it's a fabulous trip through sluggy sample work, DJ Screwisms, lofi breaks.  DHR for the next generation, in the best and worst ways possible.

Jesse Rose - Well Now:  Oh come on, admit it, this makes you smile.

Kanye West - All Of The Lights
Kanye West - Lost In The World ft Bon Iver:  Well, it's here.  My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is out and you'll probably be hearing about it ad nauseaum for the next few months.  Most people are gaga for it.  I think it has 4 fabulous songs, really.  Skip to the winner:  POWER, All Of The Lights, Lost In The World, and Monster.
Bon Iver and Nicki Minaj for the win.  Seriously.

Lulu Rouge - Bless You (Mike Sheridan Pris Dig Lyk'lig mix):  Back in 2008, Bless You got an army of remixes.  I must have missed this one, because I love it's stripped done minimal world.

Max Tundra - Which Song (Silverlink Remix):  Speaking of discovering older remixes, here's a take on pretty much the best pop song in the world.  Which Song is the crowl jewel in Max Tundra cepter.  Those funky keyboard lines!  The heartfelt love musings of a touring musician!

Murcof - Memoria (Sutekh's Trisagion Mix):  And more with discovering old remixes!  The Utopia Remixes seldom really improved on the original Murcof genius, but this is a really functional rework that should hopefully ensure you will all PLAY MORE FUCKING MURCOF.  Seriously, people.  At least once per set.

Robyn - In My Eyes
Robyn - We Dance to the Beat:  After 2 amazing EPs of the same name, Body Talk is out!  It collects most of the songs from the EPs and adds a few more.  Oh music marketing in the 21st century!  you are so wacky.

Saycet - Daddy Walks Under the Snow
Saycet - Easy:  I had only recently discovered their fabulous 2006 album, and now new for 2010 they give us the absolutely gorgeous Through the Window.  If you were ever a fan of lush IDM in the late 90s, you know the joyous place this music is coming from.  Highly recommended, but pretty much essential for fans of Isan and the first 15 Morr Music releases.

Balam Acab - See Birds (moon):  2 highlights from the awesome "See Birds" EP, downpitched downtempo downer music that is really actually very lovely.

Baths - Aminals
Baths - Maximalist
Baths - Rain Smell:  I'm loving "Cerulean".  It mixes in flavours you might associate with Passion Pit, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone, and even some Morr Music fare.  Highly recommended for anyone who ever thought Mount Kimbe should make love songs.

Daft Punk - Derezzed (Tron Legacy OST)
Daft Punk - The Crash (Tron Legacy OST):  So much hype surrounding the new Tron movie, but the most exciting and insta-fawning aspect was signing Daft Punk to do the soundtrack!  And yes, here are some fabulous reasons as to why that was an awesome idea.

El May - Don't You:  From last year's self-titled album, super catchy folk pop.

Eluvium - The Motion Makes Me Last (Four Tet Remix):  Eluvium has been constantly surprising and delighting over the past few years, and joy of joy the new Leaves Eclipse The Light EP gets Four Tet on board.  OK, Four Tet in some ways has been phoning in the remixes, but it's more about the source material here.  You can't go wrong, and Four Tet does right and flips it in to a deep and beautiful ecstatic ride, never going off the rails.

Flevans - Mad Perks:  2009's 27 Devils LP had a few hot tracks on it, but this one is the sure fire boom bap standout for me.  For fans of Jon Kennedy and RJD2 for sure.

New Boyz ft Tyga - Cricketz:  Banger hiphop is a guilty pleasure, and oh I do love the cricket solos.

Sub Swara ft Stuart Bogie & Eric Biondo - Bird of Paradise:  Sub Swara always seems to impress, but here he comes with the innovation stick and does what I've always wanted, fuse the soulful jazzy with the dubstep bass in a way that isn't just isolating, but downright funky.  Taken from the new LP Triggers.

The Wedding Band - Susie:  From the new release "The First Dance EP", this song is SO traditional "piano bar" that I almost skipped right over it.  But it's a slow brooding folk ballad of love and loss and really rather stunning.   This makes me want to go out to a bar and drink and cry in to my drink and be all awkward.

White Ring - Suffocation (Los Campesinos! Remix):  A pleasant find on the Suffocation EP!  I hadn't heard any Los Campesinos! remixes before, and here they come to save the day, pulling this pop song that was drowning in it's own distortion, and bringing it in to perfect equilibrium.

Yoshihiro Hanno - Re-Platform (Aoki Takamasa Remix):  From the new Fractalized LP, this rework synthesizes some of my favourite things of a textural ambient orchestration:  The sparse piano, the low hums, the haunting horns, the creeping cello...  ahhh bliss.

blog 2010/11/18 - let's blow this popsicle stand

Big things are a-brewing!  Soon I will be off on a plane to the magical land of California, where I'll be spinning ambient and IDM at a private 48-hour long party, and I am incredibley psyched up for that.
Again, I'll often play in any country, providing you cover all expenses.  (Unless it's a big money event, in which case I'd want pay.)
Thanks to all of those that have taken me up on that offer!  It's always fun to visit new places, and drop some great music there.

When I get back I have to get deep in to sifting and rating to come up with the framework of my BEST OF 2010 list, which you should be anticipating.  :)



Baron Bane - Orchids:  A slightly electro take on Florence And The Machine styled pop.

Bill Frisell - Keep On The Sunny Side:  I saw Bill Frisell's Beautiful Dreamers ensemble over the summer (because I love Eyvind Kang's violin oh so much), and a bunch of the set was great.  I was annoyed by the pop standards a bit, EXCEPT for this one.  They did a much longer rendition live, but oh a classic like this does put a smile on my face.

Caribou - Sun (Midland Re-Edit):  So many remixes of this out there!  But I think this is my favourite.  I don't even love Caribou, but was so waiting for this track to go DEEP.

DeVotchKa - Along the Way:  Sometimes I just pine for some fabulous horns beneath my crooner pop.  Oh Beirut, what have you done to us?  From the album "A Mad and Faithful Telling".

Iron Shirt - I Gave You All My Love (Matt Shadetek's I Gave You All My Dub Remix):  Probably my favourite standout from the wishy washy "Uproot: The Ingredients" collection circa 2008, it incorporates all of the modern soul dub goodness of someone like Fat Freddy's Drop with that analog synth blurt we've come to love.

James Blackshaw - Cross:  I fell in love with James Blackshaw with the 2007 The Cloud of Unknowing and I have since gone and found more of his fantastic work!  This is from the 2009 album "The Glass Bead Game", lovingly and appropriately referencing Herman Hesse's masterful novel.  The intricacies woven without hint of exhaustion here are magical.

Marnie Stern - Gimme
Marnie Stern - Nothing Left:  New Marnie Stern!  After the mouthful of the last album title, this one's just self titled, but just as ass kicking.  Like Gang Gang Dance or Ponytail, there is a love of dischord that is the price of admission, but like those two other bands, if you are tall enough to ride, there are moments of great ecstasy within.  And of course if you loved the last album, this will be essential.

Max Richter - Infra 8
Max Richter - Journey 2:  Richter is back with "Infra" for 2010 and it continues his tradition of strong soundtrack-focused compositions, and probably even remember his work from the spectacular movie Waltz With Bashir (which you TOTALLY need to see).
There is a fine balance between string compositions and textured electronics that almost implies the scenes flippnig between each other.  For fans of contemporary classical, soundtrack music and ambient, highly recommended!

MGMT - Congratulations:  I didn't give the new LP too many listens, but thought I should promo the precious highlight here.  Remember when Ween sobered up and released heartfelt subdued songs that sound like a Sunday afternoon hangover?  Yeah, that.

MJ Cole & Wiley - From The Drop (L-Vis 1990 remix):  MC Cole rocks my booty!  And oh wait, L-Vis 1990!  He rocks my booty too!  OMG they are rocking it so hard I'm worried my booty will get cancelled out!  The stakes are high in this game of life.

Moremoney - All Those People:  The backbeat is total shades of Bjork's Medulla, but the vox are more mid 90s Garbage than anything.

Owen Pallett - Scandal At The Parkade:  Owen doesn't have the same track record for EPs as say, Antony Hegarty.  While Antony releases gems of perfectly compact EPs that are essential to the catalouge, you end up wanting to skip over Pallett's EP efforts.   The new EP is called "A Swedish Love Story" and there is a some goodness on it!  As a whole I'm not in love with it all, but OMG this song sounds like it could have been a single off of his masterpiece, Heartland.

Paris Wells - Let's Get It Started (Mat Cant Remix):  Cabaret-esque pop...  done Juke style?   Umm OK.  But it totally works.  Super addicrtive.

Parlovr - Hell, Heaven:  From the album "Hell / Heaven / Big / Love" something about this makes me nostalgic for that which we earnestly dubbed "alternative rock" in the mid 90s.

Prince Club - Love Jackson:  Some sweet pitched down soul deepness!

The Decemberists - Down By The Water:  Leaked everywhere already, this is the firs single from the forthcoming album "The King Is Dead".  LOOKING FORWARD TO IT!

The National - You Were A Kindness:  The stellar "High Violet" gets the deluxe treatment, and here's a taste of bonus track goodness that you're missing out on.

blog 2010/11/10 - a busy week, but take some solace in this update

I have to say, I love taking Tuesday and Thursday off!  Woot.  3 day work week!
And so before things get too nutty, here's another fabulous slab of (mostly) new releases.
PARTY!



Adam Arcuragi - She Comes To Me:  This one has a bit of that Beirut swagger, with a bit more "passed out at the bar" kind of feel.  From last year's "I Am Become Joy".

Annie - I Don't Like Your Band:  Annie is total cheese, but if you love Robyn, it almost goes without saying you have to love Annie.  And her songs are all so brutally honest, while being sunshine pop.  She has this earnestness that is focused solely on the shallow world of club culture, and her songs themselves are a cultural void, but still you have to smile at tracks like "I Don't Like Your Band", "Happy Without You", "I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me", "My Love Is Better".

Baths - Pop Song:  The whole thing, at first glance, seems kind of unassuming and downright "preset".  But there's a charming quality about this that just sucked me in.  Sometimes songwriting just trumps musical innovation.

Benga & Coki - Night (Geeneus Remix):  This tribal dubby number just slinks along delightfully, and then it's gone.  Gone fabulously.

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Heaven Can Wait (Nosaj Thing Remix):  I was never a big fan of the original, but this takes the overeager pop and subdues it appropriately and now it's smooth and cool and great.

Cornershop - Topknot ft Bubbly Kaur (Cavemen Mix ft M.I.A.):  It makes me so happy to have M.I.A. out on a good new track!  I love me some South Asian breakbeats, and I fucking LOVE Cavemen (where did they disappear to for so long?) so yay yay yay for this.

Crystal Castles - Not In Love ft Robert Smith:  WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?  How the hell did this happen?  I was in shock when I saw this.  Could it be true?  Could it be?
Yes, it is.  It's here and it's yours.  Everyone, MAKE OUT ON THE DANCE FLOOR!

Das Racist - All Tan Everything ft Jay-Z
Das Racist - People Are Strange
Das Racist - Sit Down, Man ft El-P:  I had heard some random tracks by Das Racist and wasn't impressed, so I slept on this album, and now I realize the error of my ways.  This album is great.  Fun lyrics, interesting flows, an army of great producers pushing some great new ideas around, and a good roster of guests as well.  I think the thing that really seals the deal is that the MCs are really intelligent and play around with ideas of racism and stereotyping in such a knowing way.
Oh and mad bonus points for riffing on MC Hammer's Addams Groove.
   
Discovery - I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend ft Angel Deradoorian:  Electro house meets Dirty Projectors?  Passion Pit dressed as Beyonce?

Don Diablo - Animale ft Dragonette:  Dragonette!  Kudos to you for making such amazing strides in 2010 with your collabs.  This isn't QUITE as super amazing as the last single I posted here, but still heads above the competition.

Eleanor Murray - Street To Ride:  From "Oh Thunder", I love the sense of foreboding and magnitude that is expressed here by what on the surface is just a subdued folk song.

Gyptian - Hold You (Shy FX & Benny Page Digital Soundboy Remix):  CHOOOOON!  Total ecstatic ragga anthem rework!  LIGHTAS UP!  This is the ish that gets the cuddle puddle rockin'.

John Zorn - Anxieties (The Treatment OST)
John Zorn - The Treatment (The Treatment OST):  I discovered John Zorn's Filmworks series way back when there was only 4 of them out.  Now there's like what, 23?   I have been working my way through the series and #18 (from 2006) has me stopped dead in my tracks.  For the film The Treatment (never seen it either), we have some of the most gorgeous ensemble pieces I've heard all year.

Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corses With Hector Zazou - Eramu in Campu:  This one goes back 1991!  Digging in the vaults, but alas no, I just recently discovered this gem.  Full of haunting chants, flute, tribal drums and a steady sense of wonder.  New agey in all of the right ways, but as demanding of your prescience as any Philip Glass album.
   
People You Know - Good Girls
People You Know - Virginia Gold:  Toronto rockers do right!  More gems from the Canadian invasion that will make their way to any mixtape you construct for your girlfriend.

The Tallest Man On Earth - The Dreamer:  Oh lordy lordy lord, what a dynamite track to end on!  Sometimes the Blues Is Just a Passing Bird is the gorgeous new EP from this artist who already gave us gold this year.  Kiss the fucking ring!

Amanda Palmer - Fake Plastic Trees (Radiohead cover)
Amanda Palmer - No Surprises (Radiohead cover):  These are from the new single "Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits Of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukulele".  Which pretty much sums it up nicely.

Belle and Sebastian - I Can See Your Future
Belle and Sebastian - Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet John
Belle and Sebastian - Write About Love:  These romantic troubadours are back with "Write About Love" and I'm a bit meh about the whole thing, but have fallen for a few songs on it.  I love love love their first 4 or 5 albums, but kind of drifted away from B&S for a while.  This is mostly a return to their most charming forms, and highly recommended for any fans of yore.  Def give it a chance.

Delphic - Counterpoint:  Total indie electro pop fun.

Gtronic - Iron Man:  Been a long time sing I posted some banging hard electro around here!  Reminds me of the joys of Stereoheroes.

Hop Along, Queen Ansleis - Bay Area Baby:  OK OK, you guys win for having the bestest band name ever.    And I love the exasperation in this woman's voice.

Jasper TX - Sleeping Rivers:  Last year's "Singing Stones" contains fabulous slabs of shimmering warm ambient blankets.   mmmmmmm

MF Doom - Bing Bong Bing:  It might be juvenile of me, but I'm oh so delighted to have that Borat sample flipped in to such a fun song.

Modern Superstitions - Visions of You:  Love the riotgrrrl tones with that barroom pop swagger.

Mowgli & Minimow - Bollyhouse:  Chunky yummy house!

Retribution Gospel Choir - Hide It Away:  Shades of Pearl Jam perhaps?

Rusko - Feels So Real (Savage Skulls & Douster Remix):   I just can't stay away from Rusko for long.   So good.

The Gaslight Anthem - American Slang
The Gaslight Anthem - Orphans
The Gaslight Anthem - The Queen of Lower Chelsea:  Who likes Bruce Springteen?  Have you EVER liked Bruce Springsteen?  If you answered YES, then you will love American Slang, the latest Gaslight Anthem album.
It fucking bleeds New Jersey expectations.  It rocks consistently, like an even poppier take on The Hold Steady, but consistently routed in the foundation of rockgod Bruce Springsteen.
The Boss is in control.  Even Titus Andronicus know this.  Best get on board.  This won't blow your world wide open, but it's still a damn good party.

Zola Jesus - I Can't Stand
Zola Jesus - Lightsick:  Stridulum II collects most of 2 earlier EPs, Stridulum and Valusia, for some reason dropping a single track off of Valusia.  Why not just combine the two?  They're BOTH GOLDEN.
And when they come together here, they work brilliantly as a full album effort.  If I didn't mention the EPs, you'd be none the wiser.
As far as the sound goes, imagine Bat For Lashes meets The Swans.  Mythic, ecstatic, dark and brooding.  I already posted my favourite track back in installment blog20101020, but I just had an EP then, and now that I have this full length, I am overflow with the giddy.
Highly recommended.

blog 2010/10/28 - one quick one before halloween!

Busy weekend coming up.

On Friday I am DJing in Aylmer after the Polaris-nominated band BEAST.

Then on Saturday I'll be headling the crazy jam Certain Sort: Halloween Edition over at Raw Sugar Cafe.
I'll be spinning from midnight until 2am.  And I am bringing along some extra speakers for reinforcement.  And it will be crazy.

November will be a good month too.  On November 9th I'll be playing at TED Talks event in Ottawa.  The event will have 3 talks and it all about introducing kids to parliament:  TEDxKids.
Then I got invited to California for a crazy ambient party, and so they were nice enough to fly me out for it, and of course I'm oh so looking forward to going.


Bat For Lashes - Daniel (Duke Dumont Remix):  And we kick things off with some Bat For Lashes and Duke Dumont!  2 people we haven't heard much of since last year.  I am bouncing to this total rework.  Sometimes I love the grandiose remixes that stick to the essence of the original, but this is a great job of just reworking some fragments in to something new.

Dust Junkys - Beatbox Wash (Joseph Martin Remix):  This is a fresh surprise.  A very new beat that is really bouncing and infectious, without being overbearing and assaulting.

Foals - Miami
Foals - Spanish Sahara:  The new album is "Total Life Forever" and file it amongst the "has some fabulous songs but I can't love it as a whole" aisle.  Recommended for fans of Yeasayer and The Morning Benders.

Gucci Mane - Photoshoot (Flying Lotus Remix):  Another flipped up Gucci joint!  Flying Lotus grinds through the verses here wonderfully.

Jay Haze - Never Gonna Stop:  Future R'n'B has never sounded so fucking good!  At the same time trippy and sexy, while never being gross or skeezy.

oOoOO - Burnout Eyess
oOoOO - Sedsumting:  From the new self titled EP!  I got a full length from them as well, but it just didn't compare to the perfect nugget size of the EP.  Dreamy hazey witch pop downtempo and awkard beats!  Not since DJ Screw has a tape made you want to drink cough syrup more.
Recommended!

Qoso - Jurassic Park:  Deep banging tribal goodness!  What else does it need??  oh I don't know... how about... MOTHER FUCKING DINOSAURS!  YEAH!

Swans - Jim
Swans - My Birth:  I hadn't been a long time fan of The Swans, so I don't quite have all of the perspective here.  But they are back after many many years.  Well, he's back, it's not quite the original lineup.  But who cares!  "My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky" is the new album and it's pretty damn remarkable.
Dark and gothy and swimming in its own brine.  I would think this album would appeal equally to fans of Nick Drake and Tom Waits as it would to fans of Nurse With Wound and Joy Division.
Highly recommended!  Give it a chance.  Or two.

Telephoned - O.N.E. (Yeasayer cover):  And speaking of Yeasayver, it's about time we got a cover of this great song!  A fabulous rendition at that, if only a bit too short!  But so much fun.

The Jezabels - Mace Spray:  There is a majesty and honesty that reminds me of early Arcade Fire, even if the sounds isn't anywhere close.  A touch of Bat For Lashes meets The National, as well.

The Walkmen - Victory:  This song follows the one above effortlessly.  I have to admit, I couldn't get in to all of the new album Lisbon, but this is the 2nd track on it that I do indeed love.  Just astonishingly good.

These Electric Lives - Called It Off:  A tingue of The Cure wrapped in a more contempoary synth pop sheath?   

U.S. Royalty - Equestrian:  With a sound like this, you'd half expect them to be Canadian, but oh the clever name asserts otherwise! 

Xiu Xiu - Sashay Away:  Off the brand new 7" Razor Scooter, this flipside curiousity has all of the melodrama and unrefined angst we've come to expect from Xiu Xiu.  A bit of joyousness to send you off for this Halloween weekend!

blog 2010/10/26 - and now we've really done it.  oh what hath been wrought???

so last year I began the series of "BEST OF 2009" posts at the end of November, and it all culminated around December 14th.
With those dates in mind, I've already started sorting, sifting, and seeing which albums might be declared the best of the year.  Not a small process, by any stretch!
Last year I did the top 10, then the next 15, then the next 25, for 50 albums in total.  I am not sure if I will bother with 50 albums this year, perhaps whiddle it down to the top 40?
Because on top of that I keep tabs of my favourite mixes, reissues, EPs, and of course the ever popular experimental category.  Oh, and let's not forget my rehash of amazing 2009 albums I didn't hear until 2010... 
So yeah, my work is cut out for me!



Atmosphere - Commodities
Atmosphere - The Best Day:  I'll admit I haven't had much Slug love over the last half decade or so, but the new album is "To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy: the Atmosphere ep's" and it has some redemptive steps for sure.
Def check out if you are a fan.  Hell, if you liked the last few albums, you'll probably be crazy for all of this.

Azealia Banks - Slow Hands:  Practically a Beyonce song, stripped totally, and giving a just-enough-slink groove in the background.  I like it.

Blamma Blamma - Beyond 17 (Mighty Mouse Remix):  Take a sunshiney softball beat and what's next?  Why, sample a joyous classic and slather on top.  Irresistible happiness.

Bryan Ferry - The In Crowd (West End Wolf Remix):  This kind of came out of nowhere.  Here I thought it was more digital sunshine pop and then...  David Byrne?  What?  Nope, not David Byrne, but just as awkwardly delicious.

Destry - Big Mouths:  Very Regina Spektor-ey pop, from last year's album It Goes On.  I love the flute on this one, especially.

Dirty Projectors - As I Went Out One Morning:  My favourite album of list year Bitte Orca gets a 2010 re-release with bonus tracks, and here's one for your pleasure.

Japandroids - Heavenward Grand Prix:  New Japandroids single!  Just as good as their last year's stuff.  Yum.

Laurie Anderson - Another Day In America
Laurie Anderson - The Beginning Of Memory:  Wow, here's another one that I can't believe I hadn't posted up already!  "Homeland" is the long anticipated new album, and wow it is a tour-de-force.
If you've ever lovied Anderson, she is in top form here and this is essential.  If you don't know her, it's a great time to get on board.  And of course joining you will be a mess of incredible collaborators, including Eyvind Kang, Antony Hegarty, and even John Zorn popping up on the guest list.
It is a dark, critical, almost mourning take on contemporary American culture, but it is a fabulous place to simmer, and soak, and think.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Little Comets - Isles:  Taking compositional pages from Owen Pallet and Supertramp, this song is just flamboyant enough.

Martin Solveig ft Dragonette - Hello:  What is it with all of the bundles of happiness in this update?  Is it all to sugar coat the Anderson tracks?
Regardless, Dragonette kicks some fucking ass on this track.  This is the pop dance jam of the fall so far.

Masada String Trio - Elimiel
Masada String Trio - Gergot:  I can barely keep up with John Zorn, but he keeps knocking out winners.  Let's not even consider that I have be re-listening to the first 21 Filmworks albums...
Anyways, "Haborym" is the 16th entry in Zorn's 2nd Masada Book, The Book Of Angels.  And it's huge and awesome and highly recommended. 
Masada has always been the premier Zorn project, and this is no exception.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Miami Horror - I Look To You (Memory Tapes Version):  More Miami Horror, and it's as good as ever.  Memory Tapes mellows it out just a tad, but it's still that happy electronic pop sound we've come to love here.

Rockapella - A-Punk (Vampire Weekend cover):  I think I burst out laughing when I first heard this track.  And it's OK to laugh, too.  But it's also deliciously wonderful.  Probably the most perfectly appropriate Vampire Weekend cover ever.  I love me some good ol' acapella beat.

The Heavy - That Kind Of Man (Apogee Version):  Hot bluesrocksoul release from the upcoming How You Like Me Now EP!

The Velvet Teen - Radiapathy:  From 2002's "Out Of The Fierce Parade" album.

Walter Sobcek - Je Me Souviens (Original ZHive Remix):  And why the hell not, let's close with another great little pop number.  that's it, that's all.

A Lull - Weapons For War:  The cross between a campfire round, Yeasayer, and gargling?  Trust me, it works!

Bedouin Soundclash - Brutal Hearts ft Coeur de Pirate:  Coeur de Pirate fits perfectly in this new single.  I'm not normally caring for this band at all, but this track has just enough sway and cute to pull it all off.

Best Coast - When I'm With You:  Garage rock girl pop that gets it all quite right.  From the much hyped new album "Crazy For You".  I'm not in to the whole thing, but I do like this one.

Chronomad - Shir:  I fricking love Chronomad.  I have such memories of their first EP on Alien Transistor, and I'm super happy they are back with the new EP "Sayeh".
Even more so than before, it's all Morr Music meets Muslimgauze.

EL-P - How To Serve Man (Stripped):  I dropped a track prior in blog20100916, but I've been enjoying the new beats record Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 so much I had to post another.
For the instrumental hiphop heads out there, this is one of the best of 2010 by far.

Esthero - Thank Heaven 4 You (Freddie Joachim Remix):  Totally downbeat and buried under claps, the vocals are sexy and just enough.

Herve - Blaze It:  Herve gets a btit cheeky with the 92 sounds!

Lusine - Two Dots:  Hypnotic and beautiful, this has to be the poppiest and ecstatic Lusine track ever.  And when the vocals hit full force, you're in a Sterolab-induced bliss coma.

Miami Horror - Holidays:  The funky electro birthchild of Prince and New Wave is here to groove as along. 

Oh Land - Son Of A Gun (Yuksek Remix):  The original of this track is pretty awesome too, but thought you'd all appreciate Yuksek showing some restraint and getting some electro pop grooves.

Osvaldo Golijov - Tetro (Tetro OST):  I did it again.  I got a soundtrack without even seeing the film.    Is it good?  It it bad?  I have no idea about the movie, but the soundtrack is fabulous.  Extremely evocative, in a rather traditional sense.

Salem - Asia (oOoOO Remix):  So brooding and plodding... almost spooky!  I'm loving this so much.  It's dark plodding beats that are optimistic and ecstatic at the same time.

Stars - Opinions Versus The Sun (Stars Vs. The Album Leaf):  Sweet light pop remix from The Séance E.P.

The Maccabees - William Powers:  From last year's Wall Of Arms, this seems like an obvious nod to Arcade Fire, but it comes across rather successfully and delightfully, with a bit of a Walkmen twist, if that makes any sense.

The Radio Dept. - The New Improved Hypocrisy:  Ala The Morning Benders, just some unassuming blissed echo pop.

The Sweet Hurt - Always Knew:  From the new self-titled album, this song is almost remorseful as it is lulling.

Vincent Gallo - I Wrote This Song For The Girl Paris Hilton:  This digs back to the 2001 album "When", but oh the gentle brass pulses and ain't-got-nowhere-else-to-go guitar makes it oh so stunning.  Yes, give it a good chance.

Warpaint - Undertow:  Is it just me or does the lyrical structure remind you of Nirvana?  Of course the music doesn't, it's just an appropriately seduced rock track.  Perfect for moodier fans of the Yeah Yeah Yeah.

Zola Jesus - Sea Talk:  Leaving you with another fabulous female vocalist track, from the album Valusia.  Perfect for fans of Bat For Lashes.

blog 2010/10/15 - WOOSH, off to Montreal!

Another quick dropship of musical goodness, and just in time because I'm off to Montreal for a super duper weekend adventure!


AC Slater - Calm Down (AC Slater Remix ft DJ Craze):  It says something about our times when Craze showing up on a remix is a breathe of fresh air.  OMG, someone doing something in real life!  Not just on a computer!
Seriously, it's SO refreshing to hear the cuts on top.

B.Lewis - The Downslope
B.Lewis - When the Wise Men Fall:  The new album (EP?) is La Semaine, and these two tracks were my favourite.  That smooth pulsing bass that we all love so much and soulfully chopped vocals to boot.
Definitely not out of place in a set of older school Ghostly International Eps.

Banner Pilot - Overwinter:  This reminds me of the simple joys of the early Fat Wreck Chords catalouge when I was in high school.

Botany - Feeling Today:  Dream pop pulses!

Daniel Higgs - Say God:  I listen to a lot of music.  My collection is almost 5000 albums.  And i've listened to at least 4 times that many in my short life.  Like, all the way through.
And I listen to a lot of weird stuff.  Field recordings.  Ragtime Jazz.  Prog metal.  Extreme noise.  Roots folk.  Women dressed up in dog costumes playing toy organs.  etc.
And so it is with excitement that I declare this album, "Say God", like nothing else I have heard before.  A total original.
While I'm not sure if it's the best album that'd I'd lump in the experimental category of 2010, it certainly is one of the most curious and fascinating.  I could see myself totally having fallen in deep committed loev to it by the time winter has taken full effect here.
Daniel Higgs is like a cross between Terry Riley and Joe Coleman.   Between Orsen Welles and Keiji Haino.  His mantric ramblings are part spiritual part naive radio art.  And it's all pretty darn remarkable.  Try and keep up with it here.

Fat Freddy's Drop - This Room:  New single from Fat Freddy's Drop has all the soulful and dubby smoothness that you'd expect.  Totally chill.

Gui Boratto - Notations (Dada Attack Remix):  I love Gui Boratto because he constantly shurgs off what other producers are unable to do:  throw off the shackles of their Beatport categories and produce som really intresting and innovative new music.
He easily could have stuck himself in that bin of tech-house/electro/minimal/electro artists that glut the shopping carts of boring ass djs, but he consistantly throws curveballs on the occassional EP that really startles and makes you smile.

Headlights - TV (Son Lux Remix):  When an indie pop group like the Headlights gets a remix album, you can't expect it all to be golden, but I do love this energetic rendition.  Also check blog20090731 for another remix and blog20080409 for another Headlights track.

Mano Le Tough - Baby, Lets Love:  Grooving on the light and joyous clicks of this one.  Lovely.

Motohiro Nakashima - A Few Minutes Before The Dawn
Motohiro Nakashima - Tragedy Of Our Field:  I'm still pretty new to Nakashima's work, but I love the delicate textures of last year's We Hum On The Way Home.
Gorgeous instrumental compositions that will appeal to fans of ambient music of all stripes.

School Of Seven Bells - I L U
School Of Seven Bells - Joviann
School Of Seven Bells - Windstorm:  I listened to it a few more times and the verdict is in:  "Disconnect From Desire" is a winner.  Very much recommended.

Scrubber Fox - 12 Volt Minge (Feldermelder Quantsize Remix):  I love how quirky and off kilter this all is.  It stumbles forward straight in to my heart!

The Shimmies - And The Radio Played On (The Delta Mirror cover):  And let's end things with this fabulous cover.

blog 2010/10/12 - Once more before the long weekend!

You know what?  Fuck it.  I'm just going to leave the title as-is.
I was going to try and get this out before the long weekend, but you know what happened?  THE LONG WEEKEND.
And it was incredible.
And things are incredible all around, and hopefully the incredibleness of your life allowed you to carry forward with the energy and genius of last week, all the way in to this week, because this is the week you are getting this update that you were supposed to get last week.
Or so it goes.


Blue Sky Black Death - Threats:  This comes from last year's The Indie Rock Essentials, and yeah, while not totally essential, there are some good downtempo bangers on there, if that makes sense.  I love the chopped gospel vox going on here.

Curren$y - Audio Dope II:  Pilot Talk is the new album, and shit if you are all smoked-out on a couch playing video games, this might be the perfect album for you.  I love this track, and love the totally chilled out steel drum action.  But the whole album is just TOO DAMN SLACKER FOR ME.

Danny Byrd - Sweet Harmony ft Liquid (Jungle Mix):  I've been in love with Danny Byrd for years, and this is another example of why.  All of my favourite classic sounds mix perfectly with the new school production aesthetics.
Total 93 rave piano.  Let's go!

Dom Mino' - Crochet
Dom Mino' - Jacopo:  I just recently got a listen to this album, "Time Lapse", from 2008.  While as a whole it didn't jive, there were a number of stellar tracks that really had that incredible classic IDM sound that I love oh so much.  Fabulous crunchy beats like clockwork.

Emika - Double Edge (Pinch Remix):  Slow slinky creeper beats!   Pinch beautiful works the boards on this one so it pulses and breathes in all the right ways.

Kathryn Calder - Slip Away:  From the new LP "Are You My Mother?", you are almost caught off-guard by the big splash of radio pop in the middle.  I thought it'd stay subtle and folky and whispery the whole way through, but still it's perfectly plotted pop.

Mastiksoul - Que Pasa ft Dakaneh:  Mastiksoul always delivers the goods and here we have some EXCELLENT straight-up house pounding.  There has been such an annoying trend of people putting horns in to their floor-filler tracks and just fucking it up, but we can of course rely on Mastiksoul to school the masses on how to do it proper.

Mowgli & Tara Mcdonald - Can't Stop Singing:  Jazz hands, everyone!  Get yer jazz hounds out for this garagey swinger!

Sea Oleena - Island Cottage
Sea Oleena - Swimming Story:  These are from the new self titled LP.  Folk pop for the 21st century!  Cheerful, hypnotic and just lovely.

The Acorn - Kindling To Cremation (Megafaun Remix):  The Acorn get an unlikely remix album out!  Make The Least of the Day has their tracks flipped and screwed, and I really love this ghostly chanting version here.
The remix album can be purchased directly from Paper Bag Records online, and apparently a version is coming down the pipes with the LP + Remix album together.

The Black Keys - Everlasting Light
The Black Keys - I'm Not the One
The Black Keys - Ten Cent Pistol:  The new album Brothers is slickly produced fuzzed out blues rock.  I didn't think I'd love it at first, but it's really grown on me.  It's totally just straight-forward blues grooves.  Definitely give it a good chance.

Themselves - ANTarctica
Themselves - BackIIburn (Themselves Remix):  Themselves have a bad track record with remix albums.  Their last one was a bit of a mess, and the new one, Crownsdown & Company, isn't very redemptive.  But there is an original track on it, and a handful of the remixes really work.

blog 2010/10/05 - the chills in the air stir my heart


Alpine - Icypoles (Star Slinger Dreamix):  Breathey, pulsing and cute at the same time.  Using compression for good, not evil.

Fol Chen - CU:  The vocals kind of remind me of gay vocal house.  Or Max Tundra...  but the curious instrumentation clunks along and it all kind of works.  The 2nd good track from the new album Part II: The New December, which I am not crazy about, but love a few nuggets from therein.

Fuji Kureta - Bonjour:  So like what are they saying?  Is this French? 
I kid!  I kid!  I love the bassy synth that just slips in through the back door.  It couples very well with the Sterolab allusions given from the vocals.  I mean really, if you love Stereolab, how could you not love this?

Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj and Bon Iver - Monster:  Unh hunh.   That's right.  The irony is, of course, that this single IS a monster.  The joy is slathered on slick by none other than the brilliant Nicki Minaj.  Take fucking NOTE.

Manusa - J'Fuck:  J'Fuck me?  J'FUCK YOU!

Moby - Feeling So Real (Don Diablo Remix):  aaaaaaaaaaaa the happy rave classic!  OMG I'm having glowstick flashbacks.
Don adds in some more modern synth and teases us with the ECSTASY that is that classic rave synth.
If you were partying like me in the 90s, by the time we hit the 70 second mark, your pants ARE OFF.

Mosca - Gold Bricks, I See You:  The snares and chopped vox are garage, but the soul of this jazzy number is deep all the way down.  Lovely.

Robot Koch - Brujeria (Robot Koch vs Graciela Maria) :  This track constantly seems to be tripping over itself, but it's got bongos and confidence.  It'll be ok.

Rosie and Me - Come Back:  Sunbeams and love?  This is total feel good pop love, but that's ok too.

Sam Amidon - I See The Sign
Sam Amidon - Relief
Sam Amidon - Way Go Lily:  OK people, this is the big store so PAY ATTENTION.  This new album is called "I See The Sign" and it's pretty much one of the best folk albums to come out all year.  Truly.
Sam Amidon combines Sufjan Stevens investigation of Christian heartland feelings with the trancing and minimal expressiveness of Bill Evans, both of whom are folk monsters of their own rights.
And the emotions teeter between the two, the more calm and all-knowing Evans and the wonder-at-all-life Stevens.  The delicate instrumentation alawys couples with the occassionally raspy voice in a way that is oh so right.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Skream - Finally:  Outside The Box is certainly a producers album, and we all know how I feel about a bucket of tracks:  sift mericlessly!  But Skream gets his Portishead on here, while still keeping up his synth stabs.
Crank the bass and shuffle along!

Skyzoo & !llmind - Speakers On Blast:  Oh silly little bangers, how I do love thee!  and when your lyrics aren't totally offensive bullshit?  Even better!
