MP3 blog 2013/11/26

blog 2013/11/26 - the last chance to prove them wrong

going to keep it all running:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131126.zip

Arcade Fire - Here Comes The Night Time
Arcade Fire - Normal Person:  It's kind of done.  This will be best album of the year and at least be in everyone's top 5.  Sneer as much as you want, you can't deny it.  Reflektor is golden.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A-Trak - Disco Nap ft Oliver (Q-Bert's RocketCockPet Mix):  Quack it all up on the dance floor, Q-Bert's humour still shines after what, 2 decades?  Love it.

Bambu - Upset The Setup ft Killer Mike:  Great little track from ...one rifle per family.

Bon Iver - Towers (I, Aeronaut Remix):  aaaaand always with the sleepytown Bon Iver remixes!

Brother Ali - Letter To My Countrymen:  I wasn't feeling a lot of Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color, but this somber track really flows well and is quite poignant.

CFCF - Gamelan 1:  Like Four Tet, but much more snuggly.

Clams Casino - Crystals:  Getting witchy on shit shit.

Ellie Goulding - Hanging On (Illo Bootleg):  Illo gets the goods.

Flume - Insane (Fishing Remix):  Great electro bass beat with a perfect flow on top.

Giraffage - Close 2 Me
Giraffage - Feels:  What's with the trend of taking some dope chill bass and slowing the BPM at the end?  Hmmmm?

Gregory Alan Isakov - Amsterdam:  And now we break for some soaring adult-contemporary folk.  Get your scarves out.

Jasper TX - A New Language:  An Index Of Failure gives up the goods mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmrrrrrrrrroooooooooooo

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - We No Who U R
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Wide Lovely Eyes:  Not time was spent with Push The Sky Away, but these two takeaways stayed along for my ride.

No Joy - Hare Tarot Lies
No Joy - Lunar Phobia:  This is dream pop that gives me shivers and lusts.

Wet - Dreams:  So many feelings, OK?

MP3 blog 2013/11/12

blog 2013/11/12 - again again again

Nothing is as easy as right now:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131112.zip

AU - OJ:  OK just one more.  Another track from the highly recommended album Both Lights.

Björk - Sacrifice (Death Grips Remix):  The funny thing is that I already took my Death Grips dolls and made them make out with my Bjork doll, which now seems kind of prophetic.

Chance The Rapper - Everybody's Something ft Saba & BJ The Chicago Kid:  Total chillout good vibes track from the almost-perfect Acid Rap LP.

Death Coast - Crying:  Mulholland Drive, slowed down x 10000%!!!!

Four Tet - Unicorn:  Stunning little fiary twinkles from Beautiful Rewind.

Grimes - Vanessa (Nico Pusch Bootleg Remix):  Grimes was always meant to be some dancefloor funk chiller.

Grouper - Vital:  While I can't say The Man Who Died In His Boat is essential listening, has any Grouper album ever been that mush-have?  Still, a few really lovely tracks in the bunch, and when you spend time with the ones you love, you fall for them comletely.

Guilty Simpson - Ode to the Ghetto (Machinedrum Remix):  Any time machinedrum gets back to a straight up hiphop beat I am so all over it.

Justin Timberlake - Drink You Away:  The epic grandeur that is The 20/20 Experience has 2 peaks for me, and this is the other one.  JT does exactly what needs to be done.

Kendrick Lamar - M.A.A.D. City (Eprom Remix)
Kendrick Lamar ft Dr. Dre - The Recipe (Trapback Remix):  Fuuuuuuk yes, Kendrick rocks so perfectly as chiptune trapcore.  The kids are all right.

Le1f - Pocahontas ft Kitty Pryde:  Oh hai, speaking of making my dolls make out with each other as a form of prophetic divination.

Lido Pimienta - Humano (Self Evident Remix):  The beat alone is seductive but oh when those vocals slip in there you know you've found something good.

Machinedrum - Gunshotta:  This just spills out everywhere and yes that's ok.

Rae Spoon - I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton cover):  Yes, I totally imagine them singing this to Burt Reynolds.  As is only appropriate.

Shlohmo - Don't Say No ft How To Dress Well:  DID I MENTION I HAVE MAGICAL DOLLS OF MY FAVOURITE ARTISTS AND I MAKE THEM KISS?

Son Lux - Easy:  A perfect little nugget from Lanterns.

The Second Hand Marching Band - We Will Convince You:  First single from the upcoming album A Hurricane, A Thunderstorm and it's a total party.

MP3 blog 2013/11/05

blog 2013/11/05 - better still we turn it off to not burn out the night

HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS, ROB FORD…  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131105.zip

B.T. Express - Everything Good To You (Jim Sharp Northern Touch Edit):  Always love these funk edits.

Calexico - Algiers:  My favourite track from last year's album Algiers, this is total spaghetti-Western soundtrack music.

Captain Murphy - Gloe:  Storming bass upfront take notice.

Danny Byrd - New Day ft Xavier:  Byrd gets some funky bounce all up in here.

Decades - Tonight Again:  Oh god I love the emotional devastation in his tearing voice.

Dfrnt - El Spirito:  The vocals sound like Kate Bush, and I'm not sure they are, but it still gets me wet.

Kenny Graham And His Satellites - Sunday:  We've had our spaghetti western, now let's get some film noir hardboiled detective scenes all up in this place.

Kool A.D. - Future Primitive Culinary School ft Chippy Nonstop
Kool A.D. - Jenny Holzer ft Chippy Nonstop
Kool A.D. - Question Jam Answer ft Busdriver & Beans:  Selections from the free "63" mixtape, I love the Chippy Nonstop bits in here, and word up to Holzer!

Maximilian Hecker - Help Me:  Oh I love the organ sustain sitting contently in the back just there.

Miley Cyrus vs Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares To Wrecking Ball:  While I am not sure I will ever listen to this again, I am so glad that it's out there.  Stop the slut-shaming and make nice!

O for Odetta - Traffic:  Smooth downtempo from the ol' Rubber Beats 2 copilation. Love the flutter above the strings.

Odesza - If There's Time
Odesza - My Friends Never Die
Odesza - Without You:  Stunning beats from the new releases My Friends Never Die. Highly recommended.

Pearl Jam - Infallible:  OK yes this almost here as a joke but ummmmm I kind of actually like this new song from Lightning Bolt.

Phosphorescent - Can I Sleep In Your Arms (Willie Nelson cover):  Oh yes! #hnnngg

Radiohead - The Daily Mail:  This is a little single that snuck out a few years back and I really love it so much.

Statskcartsa - April 21st (Greg Haines' Reprise Remix):  Leave you on a whisp of drone.  Nighty night!

MP3 blog 2013/10/30

blog 2013/10/30 - the world spits in your eyes and you think it's paying attention to you

Go to bed, internet.  You're drunk:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131030.zip

AU - Old Friend
AU - Solid Gold:  I first heard AU with a crazy remix somene did of Solid Gold.  And I've now confirmed that I realy love Both Lights, the proper full length, as well.  It is bombastic and frenetic and quiet and meditative and all of that, all crammed in to one space.  It comes at you like a giant concept album that willl appeal to anyone who puts on a Owen Pallet or Sufjan Stevens album and listens from beginning to end.

Bill Callahan - Small Plane (NPR garden version):  Yes, this is Bill, in a garden, playing.  Communing.  Ascending.

Eskmo - 1996
Eskmo - I Just Want:  The Language EP is just freaking BOSS.

Jackal - Bubblegum ft CRNKN:  bubble gum BOOOOOOM

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - PonPonPon:  The video made it famous, but the song itself stands alone.  MASH THE PLACE UP!

Los Campesinos! - By Your Hand:  This band is one of those where I always get the sense that people are fed up with them, and I'm not sure where that image comes from, but they just keep saying UFCK YOU and releasing brilliance on brilliance.  I've always thought that these guys and Vampire Weekend should be forced to swap fame levels.  For justice.

Menomena - Capsule
Menomena - One Horse:  Is there irony that the album Moms reminds me of the band Girls?

Shearwater - Fucked Up Life:  Another intruiging track from the new album Fellow Travelers.

Sun Glitters - Only You:  There is a lulling simplicity to this so let it wash all over.

Team Doyobi - Art of Memorex
Team Doyobi - Definition:  A bit more accessible than there works of a decade past, this is like the best parts of Daft Punk slowed down and made relevant again.

There Will Be Fireworks - Roots:  Shimmering folk from The Dark, Dark Bright.

Times Neue Roman - So Many Females:  Just ride that Cali Bass!

Toro Y Moi - Fax Shadow (Shlohmo Remix):  I'm not a huge Moi fan, but oh HAI GUESS WHAT, I kinda sorta LOVE Shlohmo.

Victor Niglio - Jiggy ft Mr. Man:  Holy hell jig man, all over the place, clean up that mess.

Yassou Benedict - Last Cicada:  Send you to bed with this beautiful track from In Fits In Dreams.

MP3 blog 2013/10/22

blog 20134/10/22 - there is a secret entrance

if only you can believe in it:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131022.zip

Aleksi Perälä - Magnetic Shield:  From the album, Mental Union, I love this minimalist gong excursion.

Badawi - Evocation (Cex remix):  A slightly older one, but my god I love when Badawi gets all Muslimgauze on the place.

Big Wave Riders - Waiting In The Wings:  You and your friends like sing-a-long songs.

Bing And Ruth - And Then It Rained:  Pulsing and breathey and it's that epic scene late at night from Backward Music Vol.1

Bjork - Mutual Core (These New Puritans Remix ft Solomon Islands Song):  There always a lot to sift through when a new round of Bjork remixes swarms out, but the chanting + subbass win over on this one.

Claire - Games (Abby Rmx):  It's a fabulous pop song, but oh it's chill bass would fit it in so many places.  Dang lovely, AND 2 vocalists!

Crystal Castles - Untrust Us (Pause Music Mix):  Strip out the intensity and rattle and give us the pounding communique we all deserve.

DJ Cutman - Marblemadnass
DJ Cutman - Red Soil
DJ Cutman - The Moon:  BOOM, 3 of the greatest game soundtracks flipped and smoothed.  Marble Madness, Super Metroid, Duck Tales, represent!

Fire Through The Window - Hey!:  Waaaaay to short but so much fun while it lasts.

Glenn Jones - Going Back to East Montgomery
Glenn Jones - The Vernal Pool:  My Garden State is an acoustic guitar opus that, if you find the right frame to engage with it, opens up expanses for you.

Jon Kennedy - A Sure Thing
Jon Kennedy - Drive By
Jon Kennedy - Organised Crime ft Kate Rogers:  Filled with classic singles and great remixes, Strengthen The Roses is essential for downtempo fans of all stripes.  Some great slices on there for breakbeat lovers.

Kelpe - Answered (Jon Phonics Remix):  bass

Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Homeless ft Sarah Mclachlan
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - Shosholoza ft Lucky Dube, Bhekumuzi Luthuli, Hugh Masekela:  ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo god, how can you say no to a 2012 redux of Homeless?  Oh hells yes.  A few shining standouts on the Ladysmith Black Mambazo & Friends album for sure.

MP3 blog 2013/10/15

blog 2013/10/15 - some times there is a cloud of terrible just crashing around

invested in the moment for too long:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131015.zip

Battles - Sundome (EYE Remix):  Since my formative years in the early 90s, I've been a total EYE fangirl.  Even with a release with as mystifing purpose as a Battles remix album, I can always wash away the detreius and just chill with EYE and obliterate all structure.

Buck 65 - Dolores:  Rich takes vocoder lessons from Bon Iver and produces this lovely little fusion jam for 20 Odd Years: Volume 4 - Ostranenie.

Chance The Rapper - Good Ass Intro ft BJ The Chicago Kid, Lili K., Kiara Lanier, Peter Cottontail:  Acid Rap is refreshing in so many ways.  It's got GREAT stuff going on, but then it also has a few dalliances in to hiphop assholery, dropping slurs against gays and women just as casual banter and yeah, some great stuff, but fuck you for that, Chance.

Charli XCX - You're the One (Blood Orange Remix):  Dear lord, this is total pop ecstasy right here.  Everything going on is just essential.

Chiddy Bang - Mind Your Manners ft Icona Pop:  I guess it's Chiddy's thing, loop up a ridiculous pop hook and just go from there.  Whatevs, it totally works here.

Chihei Hatakeyama - Algenib:  Another drone slab from CH, this time from Norma.

DJ Hype - Dub Plate Fever:  So there I was sifting through the entire Suburban Bass back catalogue and this one pops out to me and my god it's been YEARS, but oh that "jungle jungle" sample was all it took and boom you're back and it's almost 2 decades ago.

Gaslight Anthem - Hold You Up:  Gaslight Anthem - Hold You Up
Gaslight Anthem - Skinny Love (Bon Iver cover):  From a 10" released on Record Store Day, Gaslight Anthem show off their meditative calming side to great effect.

Helios - Every Hair on Your Head (Ben Boysen Remix)
Helios - Halving The Compass (Rhian Sheehan Remix):  Here is a remix album I can dig in to, extended works for electronics and piano+guitar are always up my alley.

Joey Bada$$ - My Yout
Joey Bada$$ - World Domination:  Like Chance, Joey is part of a crop of young rappers who have tonnes of astonishing talent and are really excitiing, if you can work around the daliances in to douchery.

LOL Boys - Changes (Anenon One Take Cover)
LOL Boys - Changes ft Heart Streets:  I rarely put up 2 mixes of the same song, but Anenon stripped-to-the-horns version is so great not to pass on, and the original so lovely that what am I to do?

Shearwater - I Luv the Valley Oh:  The new album is Fellow Travelers and while I am not in love with all Shearwater albums, there are always parts of it that are incredible and have to dive in regardless.

The Pink Mountaintops - Rock n Roll Fantasy:  This goes back to 2004, and YES, it is the guy from Black Mountain and that is why it's so awesome.

Tic Tic Boom! - These Motions:  There is a Matt & Kim level of cheerleader exuberance going on here.

Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party - Danger Love:  With a name like that you're probably expecting some more radical speedbass type excursions, but nope, you get straight-up fabulous soaring pop.

THIS WEEK'S TRACKS

MP3 blog 2013/10/08

blog 2013/10/08 - there's a bell ringing, signifying the end

shake that laffy taffy:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131008.zip

Basia Bulat - It Can't Be You
Basia Bulat - Never Let Me Go:  I have been a fan of BB since her first album, and I recently saw her a 4th time.  She brought Evening Hymans and Rolf of The Acorn up on stage for backup vocals and it all created a transcendent few minutes.  It was a "you had to be there" kind of thing.  Her album Tall Tall Shadow is a fabulous folk whirlwind which strives to capture her live magic and is oh so close at achieving it.  Highly recommended.

Hop Along - Laments
Hop Along - Get Disowned
Hop Along - Some Grace:  Another track from Get Disowned appears wayback in this blog, but I listened to that post again and realized I had to get the full length album, and within discovered so much other great slow-burn emoangst fury.  Recommended!

Janelle Monáe - Givin Em What They Love ft Prince
Janelle Monáe - I Want You Back (Jackson 5 cover):  Oh hey we need a guest for this track. How about…  PRINCE???  Oh my god amazing.   The Electric Lady is out now to massive praise.  I like Janelle a whole lot, but I want to love her even more.  I love many of her songs and many things about her, but I just can't get in to any of her albums as a whole.  It was the same thing with Frank Ocean:  lots of mindblowing cuts, totally in love with the individual, but I keep skipping over tracks that I just can't groove on.

Joy O - Knock Knock
Joy O - Sicko Cell:  Using a clever SUPER SECRET alias, Joy Orbison serves up some of my favourite bouncy bangers.

Julia Holter - Goddess Eyes II:  Hot tip producers:  Check these ecstasy-inducing vocals and remix this shit for 15 minutes.

Le1f - Airbending
Le1f
- Pocahontas ft Kitty Pryde:  Fly Zone is a bit all over the place, but it's got a tonne of fun in it.

Punch - The Chase:  aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand before you know it, it's GONE!

Rhye - One Of Those Summer Days (Felix! Edit):  a moist summer morning jam stretched out as things start to evaporate

Sandro Perri - Romeo Heart (Slight Return):  Digging in to Perri's catalogue, I scooped out the great little gem of Plays Polmo Polpo, where he revisits his old electronica project tracks with new eyes.

Shigeto - Detroit Part 1:  Dope downtempo from the new album No Better Time Than Now.

Trim - Album Skits
Trim - Thoughts:  I only recently sifted through Monkey Features but oh fuck there is some SLAMMING grime ish here.  Love love love the playful beats.

Tsunami Bomb - Planet, Schmanet, Janet:  The cutest of all renditions from the Rocky Horror Punk Rock Show compilation.  I'm not the hugest RHPS fan but oh the re-interpretations!

MP3 blog 2013/10/01

blog 2013/10/01 - there is pain in it all

This week, and forever at the top:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131001.zip

Arcade Fire - Reflektor ft David Bowie:  Arcade Fire's back and the Talking Heads are once again king.  Kick out the cocaine disco grooves.  Oh and hey, David Bowie?  Woah.

Bat For Lashes - We Found Love (Rihanna cover):  Finally, the breathy drama of it can be fully realized!

Bill Callahan - Javelin Unlanding (Expanding Dub)
Bill Callahan - Winter Road (Highs in the Mid-40's Dub):  This is how Callahan serenades you on your way to the afterworld.

Cassie - Me & You (CRNKN Remix):  So many remixes of this classic, and this is my favourite one yet.

Elvis Costello and The Roots - Sugar Won't Work:  2 great tastes you never thought would go together!  Wise Up Ghost And Other Songs out now.

Guided By Voices - Class Clown Spots A UFO:  Ecstatic pop where the opening lines take me right to TMBG's John Henry album, and that sets the bar right high.

Lucas Hicks - Greenest Summer:  This is from the album Slower, and has that Wavvers fuzz with the Girls emotional package, I guess like a modern Eric's Trip sound?

Maxxi Soundsystem - Regrets We Have No Use For ft Name One (Matthew Herbert Remix):  I'll immediately dive in to anything Herbert has touched, but oh my the song title was truly what brought me here and hey there are blankets and I have decided to stay.

Ms Mr - Hurricane (CHVRCHES Remix)
Ms Mr - Think Of You (RAC Remix):  Insanely good pop.  Textbook great.  All of your favourite sonds with a voice reminiscent of The Gossip.  It's just great.  Highly recommended.

Murcof & Philippe Petit - Pegasus:  Pieces like this give me such shivers. I love gurgled electronics sitting on par with melodic chamber instrumentals, swirling together in a psychedelic incantation.  I haven't heard the new album "First Chapter" yet but if this is the masthead for it, I'm in.

Nine Inch Nails - Copy of a:  So apparently there was this guy named Trent Reznor and he was like, THERE, at the start of the internet and made some famous usenet postings or something?  Anyways, he wallowed in obscurity for a few decades, did some awesome background work for Aaron Sorkin dialogue, and has an album out now.  We wish him well and hope he can make a name for himself, he sounds very promising!

Scott Walker - 'See You Don't Bump His Head'
Scott Walker - Tar:  Bish Bosch is a singular musical world untouched by any reality you have known before.  It is all the mythology and symbolic density of The Swans rennaissance, if instead of an industrial blues background he had a baroque opera opera, then fell in a vat of mutagen.  This will not be for everyone, for the adventurous it is an untouchable work of capital A Art.

Sleigh Bells - Bitter Rivals:  New single tones down the crunch, ups the pop, and I love it all the same.

The Julie Ruin - Cookie Road:  Run Fast, out now.  Welcome back.

MP3 blog 2013/09/24

blog 2013/09/24 - no you can't just skip right to the end

Angel Haze - Drop It
Angel Haze - Wicked Moon ft Nicole Wray:  Angel Haze.  Reservation.  One of the best hiphop albums from 2012.  Simply amazing.  Highly recommended.

Beth Orton - Call Me The Breeze
Beth Orton - Magpie:  If you like your folk deep, tense brimming with a European magic, you'll love Sugaring Season.  While certainly very, ahhh shall we say "CBC-core", it is one of those adult contemporary sojouns you will have to take when you are ready for a lovely candlelit dinner.  Recommended for fans of the Be Good Tanyas and Sarah McLachlan.

Bill Callahan - The Sing
Bill Callahan - Winter Road:  Bill's back and he's stripped away even more, showing everyone how little excess an Album Of The Year truly needs.  Dream River is a turing test for if I want to sit on a dock and watch the sun rise with you.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Born Gold - Abdomen:  Lead single from the new album I Am An Exit, the production intensity has been turned down only a notch, just allowing the empathic vocals to shine even more.  Get on board people, this is a Canadian answer to Passion Pit's electrojoy.

Braids - In Kind
Braids - Near Enough:  Braids are back for 2013!  Very exciting.

Charli Xcx - Cold Nites (Remix)
Charli Xcx - Moments In Love:  I wasn't super digging the XCX mixtape, but I love these 2 tracks plenty, bringing in some RnB outside help, and then tapping the Art Of Noise.

David Lynch & Alan R. Splet - Eraserhead (Dance Mix):  Every time someone drops the needle on the Eraserhead soundtrack their mind drifts to thoughts like "Dayyam this needs a hot remix".  And thanks to the "Eraserhead: Original Soundtrack Plus" edition, here we are.

Ernie Hines - Our Generation (DJ Nu-Mark Re-Edit):  The classic, flipped for the 2nd wave hiphoppers by Pete Rock, done in a DJ friendly package.

Flosstradamus - ITH ft Tuneboy & DJ Issac:  soundboy be killin it

Hauschka - Radar (Alva Noto Remodel):  Probably my favourite takeaway from the Salon des Amateurs Remixes album.

Josh Martinez - Going Back to Hali ft Classified & Scratch Bastid:  Kinda hard not to just be smiles all over on this.

North Lake - Is It Dangerous To Go Alone:  Total tech wub that I can get right behind.  Go forth brave one.

MP3 blog 2013/09/17

blog 2013/09/17 - trash can orchestra through the EMU

AlunaGeorge - You Know You Like It (Dj Snake Remix):  My favourite new pop sensation gets a bumping little rework.

Angel Olsen - Lonely Universe
Angel Olsen - The Waiting:  Half Way Home is a heart-wrenching emotional apocalypse of a folk album that knocks the wind out of me.  She is a cross between Elizabeth Anka Vajagic and Janis Joplin and a destroyer of worlds.  Highly recommended.

Bonga - Mona Ki Ngi Xica (Synapson Remix):  Totally grooving on the smoothed out and slowed down house.

Childish Gambino - Toxic ft Danny Brown:  Danny on the Toxic samples works so perfectly.

Dollkraut - Loot (Krause Duo Remix):  Plod on, tech warriors.

Dum Dum Girls - I Got Nothing:  Another great track from the End Of Daze EP.

EuanCaiAtkinson - Rebound:  Elegant washed out morning music to cry to.

Kid Smpl - What Kept Us (Giraffage Remix):  The name Giraffage is soon synonymous with moonlit makeouts of the post raver set.

LOUDPVCK gLAdiator - Scaley (Pyramid Juke Remix):  Banger trap shit.  Use with caution.  Discontinue use if syptoms of diarrhea persist.

Mark Davis - Eliminate The Toxins:  I had this great song in my collection for a while but didn't know the artist!  Finally got around to googling him, but let this be a lesson people:  ALWAYS use proper ID3 tagging when you dump stuff online.

Matt Nathanson - Love Comes Tumbling Down (De Hofnar Bootleg):  Uplifting happy electro pop, yes!

Monoloc & Daniel Wilde - When I Get Older:  Brooding bass tech that holds a really lovely pop song in it.

Myopic - Jura:  From We Were Here

Shlohmo & Jeremih - Bo Peep (Do U Right):  Shlomo's trap-for-lovers fits so perfectly here with R&B.

Solvent - Frozen Food:  This goes back a bit, but I had been listening to the ol' Cashier Escape Route comp and the 90s era Solvent richness is always so stunning and satisfying.

The Weather Station - In The Bleak Midwinter:  Just in case the crushing weights weren't fully upon you…

MP3 blog 2013/09/10

blog 2013/09/10 - crushed by the momentum of just standing still

2morrows Victory - Lift Off (Tropics Remix):  Sick of 96 indeed, keeping it every day.

B.Lewis & Sango - Não é Nada:  This mix of pounding beat ans sweet soul gives smiles all around the block.

Cold Cave - The Great Pan Is Dead:  From Cherish The Light Years, this is like Robert Smith on speed and Muscles.

Die Antwoord - Diz Iz Why I'm Hot (Dom Dolla's Bass Remix)
Die Antwoord - Fatty Boom Boom:  DA always linger around with hot mixes always slipping out, and ahhhh yeah gotta pay some respects to the Fatty Boom Boom track of the last album.  The beat is just sick.

Gidge - For Seoul PT1:  Like if mopey indie rock got stuck in a loop and the machine spat out hypnotic plodding house.

Glasser - Apply (Lemonade Remix):  I can't tell if this is more dour or uplifting…

Kendrick Lamar - M.A.A.D City ft MC Eiht:  KL has so much hype and acclaim, but really I can't approach his stuff for the most part.  He's not Kanye douchey, but in this day and age do we really need Bitch This/That?  So tired on that front, makes the album hard to listen to as a whole.

Laura Mvula - Make Me Lovely
Laura Mvula - She (Jakwob Don't Stop Bootleg):  There is some amazing comlexity at work in this voice.  From the new album Sing To The Moon, I am getting super excited.  Oh and hey Jakwob here to ice that cake.

Lil Wayne - 6' 7' (Six Foot, Seven Foot) ft Cory Gun:  This goes back to 2010, back when Lil Wayne was a total douchebag.  Oh wait, he still is, but ahhh the things we endure for a banger.

MoonRacer - Shangri La:  Light and airy downtempo blissout.

Rapsody - Dark Knights ft Wale:  Ahhh man I love this track so much.

Robin Thicke - Run 2 Me (Sammy Bananas Bootleg):  So wait, who is this Thicke guy?  Is he really Alan Thicke's spawn?  The guy with the hair, from the 80s?  What?

The Zolas - Knot in My Heart:  From the album Ancient Mars, this is some straight up singalong rock.

ValkyR - Intelligence:  They have lots of great spooky fun on Metamorphosis and it's a bit all over the place but also just filled with ghosts.

Vladislav Delay - Narri:  A trough full of pulsing textures for you to just dunk your head in to and gorge, from the album Vantaa.

MP3 blog 2013/09/03

blog 2013/09/03 - sometimes I want you to be the one to call

A/T/O/S - A Taste Of Struggle (Commodo Mix):  Get ready for a chillbass heavy update this week, and we'll start it off right with this super smooth single.

C. Diab - Stone:  Wonderful melodies, all droned out in to states of bliss.

Conner Youngblood - Proportions:  Guitar + skitter vox all over this plodder.

Dan∆logOne - Places:  Downtempo framework with a 4/4 beat, from the album Skys.

Dracula Lewis - Permafrost:  Oh god I love this oh so much.

Flume - Left Alone ft Chet Faker (Ta-Ku Remix)
Flume - Sleepless (Paces Remix):  2 incredible slices from Fume here, and each by a familiar name in the so-awesome-bass category.

Julio Bashmore - Au Seve (Bengfang Trapped Remix):  Bashmore gets the intensity ramped up for a short little trap spell.

K.Flay - Hail Mary ft Danny Brown:  D.B. stands for douchebag, but the flow on this is all sorts of hotness.

Kanye West - Mercy (D.Fine Remix):  I've said it before and I'll say it again:  Kanye reworks are always best when you subtract the Kanye.

Little Boots - Motorway:  Little Boots is back with more of her pop pleasantries with her new album Nocturnes

Local Natives - You & I:  I am still digesting the new album Hummingbird, but this song immediately jumps out as a highlight.  For fans of Grizzly Baer, Beach House, and that entire vein.

Los Rakas - Abr Zame (Uproot Andy Mix):  The now classic riddim falls in to UA's toolkit and it still sounds like sex.

Ólafur Arnalds - Endalaus II
Ólafur Arnalds - Two Songs for Dance:  The new album Two Songs for Dance has some vocals on it that I really couldn't dig, but the instrumental tracks with their clicky IDM beats are pretty damn marvellous.

Rae Spoon - God Was On Your Shoulders
Rae Spoon - Love Is A Hunter (My Prairie Home version):  Let's not mince words:  My Prairie Home is a stunning album.  A fully realized new work, it also serves as soundtrack to the new National Film Board documentary of the same name on Rae.  Jarringly beautiful autobiographical songs sit perfectly balanced against instrumental vignettes, offering up moments of solace, reflection, and a moment to breathe before moving to the next scene.  It even includes an incredible rework of Love Is A Hunter.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Rhye - Open (Bondax Remix):  One of the most beautiful tracks of the last year gets a wonderful new dress for another night on the town.

Swimming - Triplebrie:  Yeah with a name like that I think I was guaranteed to love it.

Termanology - Bars For Days:

MP3 blog 2013/08/27

blog 2013/08/27 - beckoning on the horizon, the omen presents as a pony

2AM Club - Miley Cyrus:  Who is this Miley person everyone is talking about?  Sheesh.

CHVRCHES - Now Is Not The Time:  From the Recover EP, this band makes me oh so happy.

Cornelius - Design Ah No Theme:  Cornelius!  Yes the dapper Japanese blender musician whom we all swooned over in the 90s!  He scored a TV series on design called NHK DESIGN AH and as you can imagine, it's a pretty perfect fit.

Crash Of Rhinos - Interiors
Crash Of Rhinos - Standards & Practice:  Some truecore emo sounds from the brilliant new album Knots.

Giselle - Silk (Rummage Remix):  Rummage gives a sexy bass twist to this glorious little pop number.

Jill Barber - Two Brown Eyes (alternate mix):  I stumbled on to this "The Our Power Solar Music Compilation" comp, and it had this gem (and the Mike O'Neill one) on it.  Total Canadiana

Justin Martin - Ghettos & Gardens:  Just total bass bounce without any of the side fixins.

Mike O'Neill - She Believes In Me (99% acoustic mix):  In the same weekend that I was looking up old Inbreds stuff I stumbled on this great song on a little-known Canadian fundraiser comp and oh I love it.

Nguzunguzu - Drop Cage:  Speaking of pure piles of clickclack bass bins….

Ryan Hemsworth
- Overthinking
Ryan Hemsworth - Slurring (Baauer Remix):  2 slices from last year's brilliant Last Words album / double EP.  So so so good.

Subsist - Girl:  This.  This is just total sex right here.  All of it.

The Boxer Rebellion - Diamonds
The Boxer Rebellion - Keep Moving:  Occupying a space somewhere in between The National, The Walkmen, and The Cure, the new album Promises is seeming pretty darn exciting.

The Heavy Blinkers - Perfect Tourists:  From the new album Health.

The Inbreds - Amelia Earhart (live)
The Inbreds - You Will Know and Prince (live):  Looking up Mike O'Neill I discovered that Inbreds had released a live album I had never heard!  Woah!  Live In Calgary 1997 is available for digital purchase, and fabulous if you are an oldschool Inbreds fan.

MP3 blog 2013/08/21

blog 2013/08/21 - I notice you're watching too.

Aimee Mann - Labrador:  While being the lead single from the new album Charmer, and also the best song IMO, I love this song because the lyrics rework the notorious Bicycle Built For Two.

Alunageorge - Attracting Flies
Alunageorge - Lost and Found
Alunageorge - Your Drums Your Love:  Body Music is an incredible album, all of the best parts of Lily Allen, UK pop bass, Annie, & Robyn.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Author - Teacher:  This goes back to 2011, but it is a distillation of some of the best traditional dubstep elements, a postcard of what the genre might-have-been.  A readymade nostalgia.

Cat Power - 3.6.9
Cat Power - Manhattan:  Posting that remix last week reminded me that I enver really posted anything from Cat Power's 2012 album "Sun".  Why?   Well generally I was super disappointed with it.  But I do love these 2 tracks.

Celer & Hakobune - Merges Of Hysterical Exhilaration:  Time to chiiiiiiiil with a long selection from Vain Shapes And Intricate Parapets.

Ciara - Body Party (Sliink X Nadus Jersey Club Remix):  A great little rework with deep enough syntyhs and an ample number of snaps.

DOOM - Retarded Fren ft Thom Yorke & Jonny Greenwood:  Tragically named, but I love the beat here.  From Complex Vol. 1.

La Sera - Please Be My Third Eye:  This reminds me of St. Vincent in a really lovely way.

Lustmord - Babel:  The new album The Word As Power is absolutely incredible, and pairs the your-soundsystem-just-isn't-good-enough drones with guest vocalists.  The result is far more accessible for those scared of ambient music, and otherworldly for those of us that aren't.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Minipop
- [untitled]:  Space pop folk rcok smooth all over.

Monki Valley - Tanzania:  Total sweet grooves from the new Where I Used to Sit EP.  Amazing.

Sugar Stems - 6 Feet Under:  Crazy fun sunshine pop from the album Can't Wait.

MP3 blog 2013/08/13

blog 2013/08/13 - it all clicks together seemlessly

Annie - Tube Stops and Lonely Hearts:  New single from this dancefloor pop diva.

Blawan - Kaz:  Blawan - Kaz
Blawan - Vibe Decorium:  Totally sick deepness from Blawan, off the Bohla EP and What You Do With What You Have.

Cat Power - Cherokee (Nicolas Jaar Remix):  I love it when a beatsmithy producer takes a great track and says fuck it, no beat, just float on this hot bed of synth wonderment.  Let the flavours speak for themselves.

Clap! Clap! - Please Mother Rain Wash Our Souls From Human Evil:  Powerful heavybass clapbang shit from Gwidingwi Dema and it's totally storming.

Esme Patterson - My Young Man:  From All Princess, I, what really makes it for me is the demure male backup vocals.

Goldie - Kemistry (Justin Martin Remake - DJ Version):  Justin Martin makes everything better.  Cupcakes?  Justin Martin cupcakes are better and covered in special sprinkles.  Bicycles?  Justin Martin bicycles will get you there in half the time without smelling like shit.  And Goldie?  You best believe this is the hottest Goldie track you've heard in a decade now.

Los Cojolites - Luna Negra (Uproot Andy RMX):  Another crazy addictive banger from the always classy Uproot Andy.

Nina Simone - Feel Good (Skyphos Remix):  Admit it, you never tire of the endless Simone remixes, do you? DO YOU?

Shad & Skratch Bastid - Bound 2 (Dub):  Now THIS I wholehardedly endorse:  Take all the best parts of Kanye, strip out all of the terrible parts of Kanye (i.e. the Kanye,) and then drop in some Shad.  Problem Solved.

Speedy Ortiz - No Below
Speedy Ortiz - Tiger Tank:  Major Arcana stuns with it's raw power, both musically and emotionally.  The tremble alone makes your ears perk up.  A fine mix of Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Conor Oberst, and Sleater-Kinney.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Stephan Mathieu - Keid:  Clinical drone action from his new album The Falling Rocket.  Yeah, you keep waiting for the drop there, bucko.

Sun Glitters - Alone (Tours Edit):  Smooth sailing chillbass for your own rocky shores.

The Hold Steady - Criminal Fingers:  A true return to form, slipped out there on a 7" on record store day.  A new classic.

The Weather Station with Baby Eagle - Mule In The Flowers
The Weather Station with Daniel Romano - Tomorrow Is Forever:  Duets are often big affairs with bigger voices and bigger sounds.  Screw that, we're getting together, getting cozy, and getting intimate and let's snuggle.

MP3 blog 2013/08/07

blog 2013/08/07 - azzerrrywhere

Baths - Ironworks
Baths - No Eyes:  The new album Obsidian is garnering critical praise, but I can't get in to it as deeply as everyone else seems to.  Disclaimer aside, there is much chugging hazy beat pop action going on here.

Beck - I Won't Be Long:  Before enjoying any new Beck song, we all need a moment of silence to pity his desent in to the madness that is Scientology.  May he get free one day.

Black Ceiling - Tw1n P34ks:  Hitting you with with that Lynchian one-two tentacle punch!

Blue Stahli - Ghost of Love (David Lynch cover):  Cover of the "single" from Lynch's first album.

Console - Leaving A Century (Marek Hemmann Remix):  Part of a new trough of remixes, this one is my favourite mintech workout.

Freddie Scott - (You) Got What I Need (Danny Massure edit):  Another amazing beatfunk classic gets a sly edit so you can slip it in perfectly and educate the children.

Kabaka International Guitar Band - Mangala Special (Uproot Andy RMX):  If you didn't pick it up, Uproot Andy's Worldwide Ting mixtape was the hottest thing releasest in a year and lo and behold, the hot singles are coming out to blow up dancefloors everywhere!

The Futureheads - Acapella (Kelis cover):  What an odd choice: releasing Rant, an acapella album?  Where they hell did that come from?  Track included for perfect irony.

Wooden Wand - No Bed For Beatle Wand / Days This Long
Wooden Wand - Southern Colorado Song:  When the lyrics don't start until 3 minutes in, that is MY KIND OF FOLK.  Blood Oaths Of The New Blues didn't win me over as a whole, but my god these 2 tracks lick my socks off.

Yellow Ostrich - Elephant King
Yellow Ostrich - Marathon Runner
Yellow Ostrich - Stay At Home:  Strange Land is an album where I wasn't in to the whole, but this selection of tracks from it melts my face in such an amazing way, I just want this to be a single and declare it the best thing of the year.

Young Galaxy - Hard To Tell
Young Galaxy - Pretty Boy
Young Galaxy - Sleepwalk With Me:  Ultramarine weaves another synth electro pop spell that is more sultry and simmering than in-your-face, as you might expect.  This album continues to grow all over me.

MP3 blog 2013/07/30

blog 2013/07/30 - all for you is never quite true

Air Zaïre - All For You:  Summer will never die with the bouncing pop omg steel drum!

Balmorhea - Days:  I have a love for this organic instrumental electronica stuff, ala the early days of Tortoise.  From the album Stranger.

Budo + Hollis - Open (Rhye cover):  Create take on the original which is one of those songs where you probably should never try at karaoke.

Fatso - Clocks Inside ft Chris Martin:  A puzzle-piece of a song, just begging to be hooked in to an electropop set.

Hydraulix - From The Bottom (Salva Remix):  From the bottom of the "From The Bottom" EP

Joey Bada$$ - Hillary $wank:  $wank is something we can all get behind.

Kastle - Stay Forever VIP:  If someone asks you to Stay Forever, chances are they are ghost and therefore awesome.  Hug that ghost.

Lonnie Holley - Looking for All (All Rendered Truth):  THIS IS THE SINGLE OF THE YEAR, HOLY SHIT EVERYONE STOP MAKING ART NOW AND SPEND TIME WITH THIS.

Marian Hill - Whisky:  Starts off with some classic soulclapping, but the chopped vox push it up to a next level direction.

Shlohmo - Don't Say No ft How To Dress Well:  Yesss let's get this kid on all the sexy hot beats thank you.

Talk Normal - Lone General
Talk Normal - XO:  Sunshine is a sleeper album hit from 2012 and OMG how much do I love this band?   They are the perfect synthesis of Kim Gordon-fronted Sonic Youth with Laurie Anderson meditativeness.  Highly recommended.

Team Wild - Eugene:  Blistering charge of amazing rock from the album Taekwondo.

The Walkmen - Weight On My Shoulders:  My highlight from the Lisbon b-sides album.

Tokimonsta - Go With It (CRNKN Remix):  Super smooth pop bass goodness.

Tuesday Born - Wake ft Dnae:  More new soulful smoothness.

Tycho - Adrift:  Channelling their best BOC synths, from 2011's Dive.

Zomes - Loveful Heights:  No idea what is going on here, but this piece from Time Was is jaw-dropping.

MP3 blog 2013/07/25

blog 2013/07/25 - there is enough of this now

Bird - Stine Shine ft Little Brother & Notes To Self:  Big horn beat with browbeaten rhymes about personal responsiility?  OK!

CIRC
- The Night We Danced Without A Care:  Like if Four Tet took a lesson in writing pop music,

Dead Times - Feel:  This just in:  Annie Lennox is know a man and is once again making incredible pop music.

Disclosure - F for You:  Slinky dude vox often don't work, thus my aversion to much of Chromeo, but here I'm all like AWW YEAH GET THEM EVEN HIGHER IN THE MIX because it's pants off party time.

Ellen Allien - Lism (excerpt):  Allien is rightly apped for soundtrack work for the movie Lism and it's a wonderful full length meshed journey that is only 50% of what you'd expect and 50% of delightful surprise.  Recommended for Nyquil Drivers everywhere.

Jerusalem in My Heart - Yudaghdegh el-ra3ey wala al-ghanam:  If there is an escalator to infinite heaven, this is the sound that engulfs you forever.

Justin Bieber - As Long As You Love Me (Louis La Roche Remix):  Super bass pitched out goodness.

K Theory x Chrome Wolves - Stutter:  Robert Smith, is that you?  Oh swoon.

Loo & Placido - Back In Heaven:  Sweet lovin' deep house!

Nick Everett & Everybody - Hold On
Nick Everett & Everybody - I Try:  Oh this is the stunning kind of folk I just get all mushy for.  From the new album elsethings.

Pretty Lights - Color of My Soul:  A bit of that West Coast grindy midrange with a traditional downtempo groove.

Solo - Alki Bamba ft Deepshakerz:  More hotness on the deep tip.

Twin Shadow - Castles In The Snow
Twin Shadow - Five Seconds:  2 more fabulous Twin Shadow tracks.  I admit his stuff took a while to grow on me, but now I have no idea how I did without.

We/Or/Me - From the Top of this Thing:  Do I really have to explain how awesome this is?  At times channelling Giorno, this is a storytelling meditation.

Yellow Claw & Yung Felix - Dancefloor Champion:  Ra baba babababa BASS!

MP3 blog 2013/07/16

blog 2013/07/16 - only time for love is now

Bombay The Hard Way - Ganges A GoGo:  Always need a dose of raucous Bombay The Hard Way.

Dan Deacon - Konono Ripoff No. 1:  Perfectly titled, and an incredible single.  I love love love this.

Deafheaven - Dream House
Deafheaven - Windows:  HOLY.  SHIT.  Sunbather.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Demdike Stare - Collision
Demdike Stare - Misappropriation:  The new Testpressing #001 single is an overload of awesome bass.  Like the very first time you heard Techno Animal and got weak in the knees.

Ellie Goulding vs Apparat - Goodbye In The Water (LeeDM101 mashup):  I love the idea of mashups that are mellow on mellow and sensual the whoel way through.

Green Lantern - Splitting Atoms:  Just some straightforward dubstep bass.

Jeffrey Lewis - Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror:  I think this song is just hilarious and perfect.

Kanye West - Bound 2:  OK best we all ignore Kanye, but I love the naïve-style beat action going on here.  Kanye, shut up douchenozzle.

Keaton Henson - Teach Me
Keaton Henson - You:  I'm a sucker for this tender and wavering folk.

Kitty - Barbie Jeep:  Another great track from the Adult Swim singles selection, Kitty has won our naïve approval.

Metz - The Mule:  Freshly winning entry in to the Polaris short list, Metz are a fucking powerhouse and should be handled with nihilistic care.

Nuyorican Soul - I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun (PH Stretch Edit):  The classic gets a breaks-friendly edit and all the peoples smile.

Run The Jewels - Banana Clipper ft Big Boi:  Another hot track of this amazing FREE album from El-P and Killer Mike
