CPI - Monastic Deathcore

Someone asked to make a mix of "Tibetan Deathcore", referencing the novel A Space Between Dreams.
I stared at my monitor curiously. (I was drunk)

In the end, I changed Tibetan to Monastic to reduce the blatant cultural appropriation and because much of the mix comes from monk-type-warrior-peepz.

CPI - Rock Out With Your Cock Out

2006 was a scant year for my DJ mixes, but this big project kind of overshadowed anything else I would have released anyways.

Rock Out With Your Cock Out is/was a multimedia performance, existing as a live set, a DJ mix, an art show exhibition, and as an online gallery.

View the gallery! (not work safe)

A number of pictures for the series will taken by Kenji Toyooka and Phil Steiner, and then a number of people took their own photos. Then it went somewhat viral and people from around North America sent in some shots as well, all on the topic of "Feminity and the phallus".

The mix certainly pales in comparison to what I can accomplish these days, but whatever, it's all good fun.

CPI - The Venus Envy Mixtape

Holy shit, 2004 was a busy year! Here we have mix #5 from that period.

I had been playing gigs for a number of charities at this point, and in particular for parties run by Venus Envy, a local women's health and sex supplies store. A few of my friends worked there and one asked for a mix of stuff to play in the store.

Borrowing from recent sets I did for Ladyfest Ottawa and the Venus Envy gigs, I assembled this mixtape. It abandons a lot of strict DJ rules, but was more fun for that.

CPI - June 19th 2004, Om Festival, Canada: Sumkidz Stage

This was probably one of my favourite sets ever. Om was a big hippie rave in the woods for 5 days with many soundstages and lots of good vibes.

I player Saturday afternoon on the largest stage there. It had been cold and rainy, and just as my set started (I think around 2:30?) the sun came out from behind the clouds and suddenly it was all smiles and dancing.

CPI - Libations for the Gods

By this point in the game everyone was clamoring for more party and dance-oriented sets, as had been unfurled at a few underground parties.

My response to that was to release another abstract hiphop mix. And oh boy did I love this one.
I was releasing these as limited edition physical promotional products back then, and the art for this one was from a Liam Thurston painting I bought, and was one of the best visual representations I had ever seen for my mixes at that point.

CPI - No Ones Around, There's No Need To Fake It

Most of my mixes, especially back in the first 6 years, were a scrapbook for me. They were there to remind me of certain emotions and states of being.
They were mnemonic devices to guide me on certain paths, for history and for ritual.

This was my favourite period of DJing. I almost got zero gigs because I was waaaay too abstract and outsider, and liked it that way.

This mix was the shining crown jewel of that period. After this my mystique became eroded as I became "Ottawa Famous". (tongue/cheek/check)
I was so proud of how the first half is all 60 bpm. I beat per second. Come follow me on a journey...

CPI - Robots Are People Too, disc 1

I was super happy when I started making this series. OK OK, I was still an angsty ball of nerves in life, but the Robots Are People Too series was very special for its time. People just weren't making IDM DJ mixes back then, and so this one stood out in a sea of progressive trance and filter house.

CPI - I Have No More Childhood Left?

Lots of people love Poetry Is For Faeries since it was their first exposure to abstract hiphop. A few less liked Lyrical Ontology because it pushed more stylistic boundaries.
Then I decided to go all out, and "I Have No More Childhood Left?" was made to commemorate all of my favourite veins of underground hiphop. It had the weirdo and avant-garde ish and I love this mix, but it is probably the one (non-experimental) mix that I receive the least fan-mail for.
A dud? Hell no. Just a refreshingly challenging journey through contemporary hiphop circa 2003.

CPI - Chinchillin'

PIFF got the most exposure due to searches and such, but this mix became undoubtedly the most popular of any I did. Ninja Tune downtempo wasn't as played-out back then, and in some cases offered a return to the beats that the "acid jazz" and "trip-hop" trends had burnt out.
I think I always kind of resented this mix because of how popular it got, and because it was one of the least challenging mixes (musically speaking) that I ever released

CPI - Poetry Is For Faeries

This was the first mix I got "Internet Famous" for. 10 years later I still get people writing me letters about how this changed their lives when they found it by random on someone's Soulseek or Napster account.

Released in 1999, this was a golden age for abstract hiphop. Anticon was just emerging and was barely known. Sole was at the peak of his youthful rise, Buck65 hadn't gone totally CBC, Josh Martinez hadn't ODed on pot and Why? hadn't become and indie-rock God yet.
They all went on to greatness, but they had this supreme naive charm at this stage.

CPI - Falling Sick Into You

Way back in 2000, performed at SAW Gallery January 7th, this was a love poem.

CPI - Falling Sick Into You

CPI - Just Scum.

I am going to kick off this blog with an entry for each of my mixes. I wanted to be able to sort them by tags, so having them here will certainly help.

Let's start at the beginning. I was born in 1979. By the time I hit grade 11 I was full-on enthralled in Japanese Noise and teen angst. To resolve both interests, I started an artier-than-though project to create 40-second sound segments, which were then randomized and assembled together in to a singular piece. In CD format, it was meant to be listened to on random.

Dedicated to Juntaro Yamanouchi and Eye Yamantaka, I present:
