a few notes...

1) as of New Year's Eve, I will be removing all 2010 blog entries from the server.  Go to http://www.thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/ and download now while you can.
2) someone informed me that I had accidentally removed my address from my wishlist.  I fixed that.  But also realized I should probably link to my wishlist at amazon.ca, since I am in Canada and no point shipping me stuff from the USA.
3) in case you missed it, be sure to check out my year-end holiday mega post and best-ofs.
4) have a great 2013, people!

[BEST OF 2012] Best albums of 2012!

blog 2012/12/18 - [BEST OF 2012] CPI's favourite albums

This year I wrote a lot about the crushing realization that there is just far too much music to ever really listen to.
I also lost my capacity to concentrate and keep swimming upstream.  We had a baby, and I find myself here in December having only dipped my toes in to the stream of releases.
But I still listen to far more music than the average human, so I will keep at this for a bit.  The mp3 blog will be maintained for as long as I still listen to music while at work, it seems.

As a DJ, I was thinking this would be a GREAT TIME to retire.  I released my magnum opus series (Chosen Families), and went out on a 2-part dance party that summarized my live party sets from the past year or two.
But I am really not brave enough to just cut myself off.  I lack that discipline and that conviction.
And in my head I have been formulating a long, multi-part series of drone ambient mixes, so that might still have to happen.  And I want to do more with noise...  SO yeah.
My cachet as a live DJ has never been more than a blip, and I imagine the attention I garner online will slowly dissipate as I peter out of existence over the years.
CPI:  not with a bang, but with a whimper.

And again, big thanks to anyone who has hired me in the past, especially for chill gigs, and everyone who bought me a book from my wishlist.  Your attached notes of gratitude were also appreciated.

I'm still around.  I'll still be in your life if you let me and keep coming back around these parts, but entropy always wins.

CPI'S top 20 albums of 2012

01) Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan
Someone else said it best:  The Dirty Projectors are unable to resist any moment that allows them to display how ridiculously talented they are.  This is 4th dimensional chess pop music,

02) Japandroids - Celebration Rock
The giants of Canada, and rightly so.  The emotional catharsis of the first album, wasn't a fluke.  They manage to expand upon it perfectly, and from the start of the fireworks to the end of the fireworks, some how a year has gone by in your heart.

03) The Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth
Like my favourite MG records, this one was a slow roll, tumbling in to my brain and just building up steam as the narratives soaked in.  The horns sections remind me of the highlights from They Might Be Giants' John Henry, the melancholy rich, but not to be outdone by the characters and concern.

04) Purity Ring - Shrines
Canada's best debut for 2012, by far.

05) Aesop Rock - Skelethon
Aesop is back on his stride and has released an album that is simultaneously mature and his funniest/goofiest album ever.  He even drops a beat-free streaming narrative of a heroic dog saving a drowning child.  He even writes songs about goofy haircuts, and brings in some Kimya Dawson.  And it all gels with the density and precision that will have you coming back for more, picking apart his flow line by line.

06) Best Coast - The Only Place
There is a schoolgirl joy that I only before found in the likes of that dog. that is so well represented here.  Not only is it summer shining fine, but also great diary-writing reminiscing music.

07) Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
A world of emotion and struggle are laid bare in my perfect rainy-day driving soundtrack of the year.  Oh and wait, what's that?  The guy from Beirut is here to party? Oh hell yes.

08) Passion Pit - Gossamer
Passion Pit are back and do exactly what you want them to do, except are even tighter.  That is all.

09) Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
The tender emotional weight of this album just envelopes you.  It has the eery spaciousness of the Weeknd, the dark edges of Xiu Xiu, and an unapologetic effectiveness that will help you get to the bottom of those lonely nights.

10) Kid Koala - 12 bit Blues
This is the album that Kid Koala was born to make:  A studio-based turntable composition that mines classic blues and reconstructs them as a contemporary opus that pays so much loving homage and has a blast doing.

11) Swans - The Seer
OH DEAR LORD IT IS GOING TO EAT ME OH GOD NO!   The scariest album cover of all time.  And an epic dark blues goth romp that fuses progressive noise metal structures with Pink Floyd bombast.  Listening to the 33-minute title track alone and naked should be requisite for entering in to the year 2013.

12) Fiona Apple - Idler Wheel
At the dawn of 2012, no one ever expected to be one of the hottest acts of the year, but here we are.  A critical darling of the indie press, and a critical darling of the mainstream rock mags.  WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT?

13) Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
The oscillation between goofy fun and intense aggression is what makes Cloud Nothing so enthralling, and they have even improved on what they laid down on their past album.

14) The Tallest Man on Earth - There's No Leaving Now
There is nothing staggeringly new about this album.  I don't listen to it and think MY GOD, HE'S CHANGED!  No, it is the steady work ethic that provides a reliable brilliance that endears this album to me.  It is all the goodness of this Swedish folkster that is highlighted, underlined, and reworked in to new forms.

15) Ryan Hemsworth - Last Words
Electronic albums like this are my favourite:  5 hot tracks, 5 hot reworks.  It's the perfect format.  An EP of genius, tucked in with an EP of genius reworks.

16) Niki And The Dove - Instinct
Remember that Kate Bush meets The Knife erotic fanfiction you always dreamed of writing?  Well lucky for you, here it is!  With a generous dash of Young Galaxy contemporary pop, this album hits all sorts of nodules in your brain that you probably haven't jumped at in years.

17) Death Grips - The Money Store
The energy of a first listen to Death Grips is what it was like to listen to Atari Teenage Riot back in their debut.  A cacophonous intensity you probably weren't used to before.  The kinetic percussion is all over the place, and I do recommend grabbing the insutrmental version as well.

18) Cold Specks - I Predict A Graceful Expulsion
Canadian folk can breed a deep resonance from the unlikeliest of places.  There is a tremble and roar in this album, and it just leaves you excited to hear what she will do next.

19) Hot Chip - In Our Heads
I kind of imagine Hot Chip as just the singer, going around performing with a microphone and a laptop.  He'd be the perfect travelling crooner.  Like with the beats, you can almost here the timecode in Ableton ticking ever forward.  Hot Chip have that reliable simplicity about them.  But they are also reliably one the best pop albums of the year.  Every time I expect a hint of complacency or compromise, they continue doing their thing, continue producing absolutely fun and satisfying pop albums.

20) How To Dress Well - Total Loss
With all of the hot future RNB out there, this one is the pinnacle for me.  It captures the emotion, the space, the lust, all without being all douchey.  Good job.

in summary...

One thing to note, to clear up some confusion:  I personally rate albums in regards to how good they are as a full album.  As something I want to put on and listen to from start to finish.
Where is Frank Ocean???  I know, I know.  I love Ocean too, but after listening to channel orange 10 times, there was only 4 tracks I actually cared to ever hear again.
So here are a handful of runner-ups.  Albums that have greatness on them, I have just been skipping around in them a bit too much.  Extra credit for the keeners.

Honorable mentions that you should definitely also pay attention to:
Antony and the Johnsons - Cut The World
BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG2
Beach House - Bloom
El-P - Cancer For Cure
Frank Ocean - channel orange

[BEST OF 2012] Top 20 experimental & instrumental albums

blog 2012/12/17 - [BEST OF 2012] CPI's favourite experimental & instrumental albums

Normally I would write glib, one sentence reviews for the albums.  Normally I would try and at least convey my enthusiasm for each and at least hint at the magic of it.
But after the devastating emotional crush of the Newtown massacre, I just don't have it in me.
After the barrage of cheerleading from the gun lobby, working hard to make sure it is ever easier to acquire more powerful weaponry, working hard to make sure nothing happens to alter America's fetish for guns, working hard to maintain a status quo that merely costs a repeated civilian slaughter that is a tragic outlier against every other 1st-world nation...  after taking in all of that, I just don't have the words.

Have 4 hours to wile away? You can sift through this...

MP3 blog 2012/12/05

blog 2012/12/05 - my beacons bring it back to me.

First up, you all should check out my new mix this Friday.  It will be livestreaming starting 8pm
details up at http://www.facebook.com/events/306756056095963/
But it will rock your Friday night, looping through the evening.  And if you tune in, you'll get the advance download URL.  It won't be available to the rest of the world until Monday.

On with the blog!

Black Elk - Aphotic Widow
Black Elk - Sparks:  Ethereal and acoustic bliss from the new album Sparks.

Bon Iver - Michicant (Pair Of Arrows Remix):  This track is all about that bicycle bell ringing.  SOLO!  OK also the wonderful soaring background vocals.

Cajsa Siik - Was I Supposed To:  Lovely little pop.

California Wives - Photolights:  Short and soaring.

Carrousel - Where Do We Go From Here:  Yes yes, I too thought this would be a rendition of the song from the Buffy The Vampire Slayed Musical.  Still, it’s a pretty great consolation prize.

Crystal Castles - Baptism (Sound Remedy Trap Remix):  Trap is mostly a joke now, let's move on.

Death Grips - Klink (Djemba Djemba Remix):  Down the harsh, up the love, and let the Death Grips synths shine!

Ellie Goulding - Hanging On (Svyable + PRFFTT Bootleg):  Great Goulding track gets a slight rework.

Little People - Aldgate Patterns:  Soft and warm and organic IDM that tickles me so.

Oh No - 3 Dollars ft MF Doom:  Tony snippet from the new Ohnomite.  And yeah probably the 80th time Doom has rhymed "mic" with Dolemite

papercutz - Where Beasts Die:  The vocals on here are fabulous.

Penguin Prison - Little Secrets (Passion Pit cover):  The bombast of the originals probably intimidate a lot of cover events, but the adorable cuteness of this one is the perfect angle.

Photek - Pyramid:  Wow, hasn't this guy been around since forever?  Oh teenage junglist version of me squees in delight!  But the heady adult in me appreciates the atmospheric breakbeats.

Purity Ring - Crawlersout:  Another great track from the stunning album Shrines.

Soreng Santi - Iron Man (Black Sabbath cover):  No explanation needed.

Soul Khan
- Wellstone ft Akie Bermiss:  Love me some slick and well done politically soulful musics.

The Pauses  - The Beginnings of Things:  Sounding a bit like Metric, all the concentrated fun.

Y La Bamba - Squawk:  End it off with this pair of addictive guitar and vocals!

MP3 blog 2012/11/28

blog 2012/11/28 - arms bazaar in the craft clutch

Earl Sweatshirt - Chum:  Wonderfully mellow new single from Earl Sweatshirt plods along like a freshly angsty Fat Lip

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Their Helicopters' Sing
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - We Drift Like Worried Fire (Detail):  Since Jesus ain't coming back any time soon, take holy solace in the return of GSYBE!  'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! is epic, B40and expects you down on your knees.

Hidden Orchestra - Seven Hunters
Hidden Orchestra - The Burning Circle:  Not Cinematic, but Hidden, this Orchestra's new album Archipelago is a stunner and highly recommended.

Ital Tek - Discontinuum (alternate non-album version):  Slick and mellow new b-side beats from Ital Tek.

Jhameel - Thinking About You (Frank Ocean cover):  OK Jhameel doesn't hit Ocean's notes, but he doesn't really need to get them all.  His "hey babe, I'm here with you at your laptop" intimacy does work really well with this teenage flirtation lamentation.

Kane Ikin - Oberon
Kane Ikin - Sleep Spindle
Kane Ikin - Slow Waves:  It has been a decade since, but do you remember the sheer orgasmic joy of Denzel + Huhn's "Time Is A Good Thing"?  The way the textures licked and looped and danced just for you.  This new album Sublunar brings back all of that hazy bliss with a touch more and the ambience dial.  Highly recommended.

Le1f - Wut:  With 5kinAndBone5 on the boards and Le1f up front, you can't help but bump.

Mariah Carey - Touch My Body (Cyril Hahn Remix):  Pop divas on cough syrup are always welcome over here.

Pinback - Proceed to Memory:  Pinback have always beena  bit muted, a bit understated, but the emotional resonance of this new song from Information Retrieved just grabs me the whole way through.  Totally inspirational.

Solange - Losing You (Cyril Hahn Remix):  oh oh oh oh so good, you mushy warm subbass you.

The Dirty Nil - Panzer:  The perfect amount of bluesy grind.

Theophilus London -  Dance Hall Days (Wang Chung Cover):  HAHAHAHA oh yes this is sweet ok yes yes.

Wu-Tang Clan - Six Directions Of Boxing:  You can't count Wu-Tang out.  They're like The Roots, they'll be around forever.  OK, not Dirty.  But you know what I mean.  This track is off the new The Man With The Iron Fists soundtrack.

MP3 blog 2012/11/22

blog 2012/11/22 - you need to forgive everything everything forever

Babel - Babbage Decade:  This is what christmas sounds like TO ME.  Oh the bells, the thunderous bells!

Crystal Castles - Pale Flesh:  Third CC album, confusingly titled (III), is pretty amazing.  Highly recommended.

Dry The River
- Animal Skins:  Driving mountain-sized rock from the new album Shallow Bed.

Hop Along - Diamond Mine:  I love her whispy chirpy voice oh so much, and the whole way the song just tumbles forward despite of itself.  The bleak lyrics are reflected in the album's title, Get Disowned.  Yes.

Nocturnal Sunshine - Meant To Be:  Wobblesex.  There, I said it.

Oskar Schuster - Les Sablons
Oskar Schuster - Sneeuwland:  Incredible piano from the new album Les Valses Invisibles.

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Good Cop Bad Cop:  Instrumentalist legends SMONSP have their classic Savvy Show Stoppers re-released!  Go go go go!  Yes, they are best known as having done the theme music for Kids In The Hall.

The Album Leaf - Stretched Home:  Luscious new release, Forward/Return, comes highly recommended for any fans of post-rock and idm textures.

The Soil & the Sun - Who Is He, Anyway
The Soil & the Sun - You Alone Know:  Imagine the folksy Fleet Foxes going epic mega family cultist!  Good times to be had on the new album "What Wonder is this Universe!"

The Very Best - Mghetto ft Xuman
The Very Best - Yoshua Alikuti:  The new album MTMTMK isn't as crazy awesome as their beat-jacking mixtapes of yore, but still lots of great stuff on here.

Two Door Cinema Club - Handshake
Two Door Cinema Club - Next Year:  The new record Beacon doesn't blow open previously locked doors, but meh, it doesn't need to.  TDCC have proven themselves as a standard-bearer of slick pop rock, and they deliver some choice cuts again.

Two Fingers - 101 South:  Great instrumental bass wiggle

Woodpecker Wooliams - Crow:  this is amazing and I love it and oh oh oh!

Zoe Phillips - Boat (Rameses B Remix):  Sparkling pop on moddy bap beat, very well done.

MP3 blog 2012/11/18

blog 2012/11/18 - it's safe up here, safe for now.

Author - In The Sky:  Smooth and crisp and FULL OF BELLS!

Best Coast - The Only Place
Best Coast - Up All Night:  The new LP The Only Place is a jangly indiepop delight.  Highly recommended

Cristian Vogel - Deepwater
Cristian Vogel - Lucky Connor:  Vogel's album The Inertials is full of icey textures and eccentric early morning beats.

EUS, Postdrome, SaAad - 3AM:  Grinding drone ambient from the new release Sustained Layers.

Finley Quaye & Skeewiff - Don't Do That:  Chilllllll…

Ginuwine - Differences (Blackbird Blackbird Bootleg Remix):  Sounding nothing like Ginuwine, this track is awesome.

Purity Ring - Belispeak (Nacey Remix):  Stripping down some of the reverb and laying it out on crisp tracks, this lovely remix chugs along.

Quench - Drecha:  IDM veteran from a decade ago, Quench is back with a new single, Hallstreak Foles, full of brainwerk beats.

Telephoned - I'm Real
Telephoned - One Thing (Amerie cover)

Telepopmusik - Don't Look Back (Pyxis Remix)

The End Of The Ocean - All That Is Will Cease:  Epic postrock from the new album In Excelsis.

The Knife - You Make Me Like Charity (Cry Wolf Remix):  YOU MIGHT KNOW THAT THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SONGS EVER, so so so psyched about this remix.

Why? - Strawberries:  OK while not the album we were all hoping for, this is a solidly delicious track from Mumps, Etc.

Xiu Xiu - Honey-Suckle
Xiu Xiu - Smear the Queen:  New Xiu Xiu album is "Always", and I'm enjoying it far more than I thought I would.  Like, it's seriously an enjoyable listen through all of its excesses and pain.  And female guest vocals!  I'm recommending this one for reals.

Zion I x Little Dragon - Ritual Union (J. Period ReFix):
Zion I x SBTRKT - Wildfire (J. Period Refix):  I always thought Ritual Union required a little something extra, and Zion I drops it down perfectly.  The always wonderful J. Period jacks the genius just right.

MP3 blog 2012/11/08

blog 2012/11/08 - that special moment where you realize friction is all an illusion

Andrea - Going Down
Andrea - Work the Middle (Real Remix):  Super chill bass delicacies.

Crystal Castles - BAPTISM (Sound Remedy Remix):  CC classic gets one last cosmic overhaul.

Ellie Goulding - Anything Could Happen (Henry Fong Remix):  Epic and ecstatic remix!  Goulding is finding a niche in house remixes that only Tori Amos dominated a decade ago.

FIDLAR - AWWWKWAARRRDDD ft Kate Na$h:  Finally an anthem for social anxiety and related medication.

Frightened Rabbit - State Hospital:  I am giddy for the forthcoming LP, but in the meantime I have the State Hospital EP to keep me warm.

Grizzly Bear - Sleeping Ute
Grizzly Bear - Speak In Rounds:  As was there debut, Shields is an understated rumbler of an album that will just percolate in all the right ways. Recommended!

How To Destroy Angels - Keep It Together:  Oh hey, did you know Trent Reznor has this side project thing?  Well yeah, he's been doing it for a while, but who really followed NIN since say, Downwar Spiral?  This track is like an ode to Emika and Pinch, but definitely caught my ear.

How To Dress Well - Running Back
How To Dress Well - Say My Name Or Say Whatever:  This shit is amazing.  If you thought WEEKND were good but waaaay too douchey, How To Dress Well's Total Loss will be perfect for you.  All the smooth r&b goodness, with a touch of Perfume Genius flair.  Highly recommended.

Kanye West - Clique ft Big Sean & Jay-Z
Kanye West - Mercy (RL Grime & Salva Remix):  Hey kids, there's this guy named Kanye West.  Have you heard of him before?

Lily And The Tigers - No Whiskey In My Coffee:  Down home folk twang drinking musics!

Machine Birds - If I:  Beautiful divapop from the Save Yourself EP.

Solange - Losing You:  OK so the Loveshack party beat underneath doesn't quite foot the mood, but still some great pop.

The Black Opera - Teleport:  Great new bside track, love the vox on the beat.

MP3 blog 2012/11/01

blog 2012/11/01 - the energy glistens and settles

Hi all, wanted to make a few statements for my American subscribers:
1)  Get out an vote!  Vote early if you can.
2)  Please consider how your vote will potentially impact LGBT families.  Draconian anti-marriage laws that block gay marriage need to be removed, and that is not happening under Romney.  With Obama, I believe that at the very least DOMA will be excised, and further progress can be made.  These are not hypotheticals, these are real families being fucked over by homophobes right now.
3)  The powers-that-be are working hard to limit access to voting and have been working overtime to disenfranchise as many as possible.   Please help your family and friends vote as well, and give commupins to those who seek to limit your rights to vote.

Action Bronson - It's Me:  This beat is crazy and all like "UNDER THE SEA, MOTHERFUCKER, THIS SEAWEED IS ALWAYS GREENER, DOWN WHERE I'M WETTER."  Short, sweet, he even leaves us with the culinary bar raised:  dude ain't eating unless the centerpiece is an ice swan.  Woah.

Araabmuzik - Bass
Araabmuzik - We All Up in Here:  The introduction vocal kind of makes me want to stab something, but chop those seconds off and we have some tight snare snapping beats from the new album Electronic Dream 2.

B.O.B. ft. Nicki Minaj
- Out of My Mind (Clark Kent Remix):  Pop hiphop and bass squelch is nothing new, but this one works real nice.

Bat For Lashes - Marilyn:  I haven't heard it all yet, but here's the new track from the much anticipated new album The Haunted Man.

Clock Opera - Once And For All:  A theatrical bombast that pairs well with Bat For Lashes indeed.

Cumbia Cosmonaut - Tribal Amazonico ft Deize Tigrona:  Deep raw riddims!

Danny Brown - Grown Up:  The classic DB single,

Death Grips - @deathgripz:  Hot hot hot Death Grips single from the same Adult Swim single program that dropped some Yamantaka // Sonic Titan on you before.  Amazing.

Dinosaur Jr. - I Know It Oh So Well
Dinosaur Jr. - Pierce the Morning Rain:  Oh so excited for the new album I Bet On Sky!!!!

Diplo - About That Life ft Jahan Lennon:  Diplo bags a Lennon and produces this sweet pop blissout number!

Dum Dum Girls - Lord Knows:  Perfectly broody new single.

Lupe Fiasco - Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free):  I hadn't been following Lupe for a long… well OK I almost enver followed Lupe.  But I do enjoy the horns on this new single, and always love the requisite "uggh, America… really?  Fuck…" track.

Makala
- Friendly Fire (Smakalites Original Version):  CHKA!  CHKA!  CHKA!  CHKA!  CHKA!  CHKA!  WOOO

Me and My Drummer
- You're A Runner:  Ultimately dramatic fanfare that comes across as Bat For Lashes meets Florence & The Machine.

Mucca Pazza
- Boss Taurus (Jon Kennedy Remix):  Downtempo deity Jon Kennedy blesses us with another dose of chill grooves.

Pasajero - En la playa:  Short on lyrics but big on grace.

POP ETC
- Live It Up:  A love letter to Max Tundra's Which Song?

Stealing Sheep - Shut Eye:  Like a kid's marching band, headnig off to the glory of war.

Tes Elations - Autumn:  close it all down with some sweet sweet folkpop!

Reasons I am a terrible at this DJ thing:
I don't care what anyone else wants to hear.
I don't have sexy glossy photos.
I don't network.
I don't care about fashion.
Instead of going to other DJ nights I stay home and work on noise projects.
Chances are I do not have what you want to hear.
I get confused as to why people aren't in to what I am doing, but strive to not actually care, and stay focused.

I feel like I need to wipe the slate clean of that pretension, get back to my original focus, and stop comparing myself to DJs that actually have "success" or "demand" or "buzz" or any of that, because really that's never what it was about, but somewhere along the way I lost the plot.

Dec 13: Divergence Movie Night presents an Evening of Short Films

Thursday, December 13, 6-10pm:
Divergence Movie Night presents an Evening of Short Films
6:00pm “Outlet” (2006)  Tells the personal stories of the teenagers who participate in a support group offered by a Bay Area youth organization called "Outlet."
6:25pm “In My Shoes: Stories of Youth with LGBT Parents” (2005)  Five young people who are children of LGBT parents give you a chance to walk in their shoes – to hear their own views on marriage, making change, and what it means to be a family.
7:00pm “Put This On The Map” (2010)  Fed up with a lack of queer visibility, twenty-six young people in Seattle’s eastside suburbs weave together this ground-breaking narrative of shifting identities and a quest for social change.
7:40pm “If She Grows Up Gay” (1983)  A blue collar African-American mother, talks about her pregnancy and raising her daughter with her lesbian lover.
8:10pm “And The March Continues!” (1997)  Presents a history of the lesbian movement in Mexico from its origins to the present.
8:45pm “No Regret (Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien)” (1992)  Through music, poetry and quiet, at times, chilling self-disclosure, five sero-positive black gay men speak of their individual confrontation with AIDS
9:30pm “BDSM:  It's Not What You Think” (2009)  Confronts stigma and stereotype surrounding kink and fetish play through leading voices within the BDSM community.

6-10pm at Raw Sugar Cafe, 692 Somerset St West
Free admission, $5-$10 suggested donation.
