MP3 blog 2011/09/28

blog 2011/09/28 - I'll never understand you and that's ok

So ummm...  yeah.  I realeased 2 mixes in the last month!   You should get them, as they are awesome.
I also posted the new release Lesbians On Ecstasy w/Big Freedia track, and did a special DJ edit.
After all that hard work, facebook says I lost like 6 "fans" last month.
Seriously people, WTF?

Death Songs - Ophelia:  I have a thing for songs where the instruments and hand claps generally overwhelm the vocals.

Dum Dum Girls - Bedroom Eyes:  The new album Only in Dreams is kind of awesome with it's cute bedroom rock sound and vocals reminiscent of The Long Blondes.

Grizzly Bear - While You Wait for the Others ft Michael McDonald:  This goes back to 2009, but I missed that this actually happened.  Best idea for a single's b-side ever:  replace your singer.

Iamamiwhoami - John:  This is probably a poo-ey youtube rip for all I know, but have to give some love to this youtube sensation done write.  Google it up if you don't know.

Lesbians On Ecstasy - She Likes to Party ft Big Freedia (CPI DJ Edit):  SHE LIKES TO PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTAAAAAY !!!

M83 - Intro ft Zola Jesus
M83 - New Map:  I hearby do declare:  having only listened to the whole thing once, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming is one of my favourite albums of the year.  AMAZING.

Machine Drum - Lay Me Down:  As an oldschool IDM breakbeat-head, the new Machine Drum album Room(s) and other singles have left me flat, but here, to me, is the best of it.

Nest - Stillness
Nest - The Dying Roar:  The Body Pilot EP is gorgeous.  Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.

One Republic - Good Life (Robert DWNTWN Remix):  ummm yes

Patrick Wolf - Bermondsey Street
Patrick Wolf - The Falcons:  Lupercalia.  New album.  OFFICIALLY AWESOME.  Good show, Mr. Wolf.

Purity Ring - Belispeak:  WELL WORTH THE WAIT, this new single is amazing.  Ladytron eat yr heart out.

Sundar Subramanian & Madawaska String Quartet - Diminished But Returning, movement 2:  As performed by the Madawaska String Quartet!  Fabulous work from this young Canadian composer.  That I went to highschool with...

The Mountain Goats - Commandante
The Mountain Goats - Yoga:  I have been sifting through older M.G. EPs ands rarities, so you'll see a bunch in recent weeks.  These 2 come from 2002's Devil in the Shortwave.

The Wombats - Our Perfect Disease
The Wombats - Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves):  Yup, This Modern Glitch is great pop indulgence.  Give in, get dancing.

The chosen families series:
In retrospect, I now consider Moonchild (in memoriam) the unofficial part 0 in this series.
Part 1: Directions To My Special Place
Part 2: Glittering, Waiting
Part 3: Always More Than This
Part 4 will be epic and long, and will hopefully be out before the year is over.
These 5 mixes embody an aesthetic I call "dreamer beats", the evolution of which might have been obvious to anyone who follows my mp3 blog regularly.  It is more of a focus on emotional content, psychological meaning and production minutiae of the tracks than it is about the genres, which range from dubstep to witch house to idm to folk to breakbeats to dreamwave to rock to downtempo to whatever else.

MP3 blog 2011/09/21

blog 2011/09/21 - we can get there but the struggle might kill us all

Akara - Invoking the Unnameable:  Sliding in somewhere between downtempo and electro-pop, this track is all epic.  From the new album "Extradimensional Ethnography".

Architecture in Helsinki - Escapee (The Polish Ambassador Remix):  AIH are always goofy pop fun.  I can't help but love them.  NO SHAME.

Emily Wells - Symphony 2; & The Click Boom Boom
Emily Wells - Symphony 4; America's Mercy War
Emily Wells - Symphony 9; & The Sunshine:  I caught Emily Wells on tour with Colin Stetson and she rocked her opening set with a comparable gusto.  Highly recommended for anyone who wants that sweet-spot between Tune-Yards and Coco Rosie.  Catch her on tour if you can!  "The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties" is from 2008, but still is super fun.

Fink - Perfect Darkness
Fink - Warm Shadow:  Perfect Darkness is a shock for those of us expecting more downtempo funk-lite.  Gone is the dub bass, and front-and-centre is the Jose Gonzalez meets Ben Harper guitar + vocals.  If that combo sounds tantalizing to you, definitely check this album out.

Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks (Chrome Canyon Remix)
Foster the People - Warrant:  Foster The People have been pumping out smile-inducing pop jams for my mp3 player all summer.  Big-ups to Chrome Canyon for turning the bounciest of pop songs in to a Hall-N-Oates slowburner.  Very brave.

Lazrtag - Guess What:  Oh fine, here's some straightup electro house.

No Ceremony - Hurtlove:  Like a chilled a Crystal Castles, all up in your bedroom.

Ryan Tanner - Peaceful Mind:  Reminds me of peak Damien Rice with some country twang.

Star Slinger - Mornin':  Straight-up Star Slinger style:  bouncey breathey breaky, heavy on the filter.

Teen Daze - Driving Home From The Beach (The Feeling Of)
Teen Daze - Hard Times_Good Times:  Umm what?  This is their TOUR EP?  Woah.  Yes, the Teen Daze Tour EP is one of my favourite EPs of the year.  It's some of the best chillwave pop out there.  Highly recommended.

Typhoon - Summer Home:  What can we say here...  maybe...  Gordon Gano hangs out with Beirut, and then they write a song after a cottage drinking binge where they listened to lots of Explosions In The Sky?  OK, that might be overstating things, but this is indeed wonderful.

GET TO IT!  LISTEN TO IT!  DISTRIBUTE IT!  POST ABOUT IT!
Why?  Because this mix was originally going to be much longer, but it got TOO LONG.  So I split it in to 2 conceptual sides.
The next part, chosen families 3, will be coming out in under 2 weeks, so digest this while you can.

AND ON TOP OF THAT, here's an mp3 blog to chew on.
I'm not feeling like using words AT ALL today, so I won't even feign it.  NO WORDS FOR YOU.  JUST MUSIC.  LA LA LA LA.

MP3 blog 2011/09/06

blog 2011/09/06 - the saving grace of this window of opportunity

Daedelus - My Beau ft Erika Rose and Paperboy:  Shocking, simply shocking!  Daedelus, producing something so damn smooth and slick and almost... dancefloor friendly?  Woah.  King of the quirky beats still maintains some odd bass squelch, but the RnB here is ready for the primetime.

Debbie Neigher - Home:  I don't normally go for typical jazz vocals, which this reminds me of at first, but then it gets all folksy and whimsical and then BAM, that chorus swoops in like a sip of a wine you've never quite tasted before.    From the self-titled new album.

DJ Rob 3 - Township Funk:  The CLASSIC South-African dance stormer gets my favourite re-flip.    No muss, no fuss, no nonsense.

Emmy The Great - A Woman, A Woman, A Century Of Sleep:  Emmy's songs are the diaries of a drama-rich life and certainly not everyone's cup of tea.  The new album is Virtue and slide this song alongside 24 and We Almost Had a Baby for my favourite little bits emotional tourism.

ill.Gates - Eggplantation (Knowa Knowone's Playa Sunrise Remix)
ill.Gates - That Look ft Niko:  ill.Gates has been blowing shit up left and right, sometimes being the modern day pinch-hitter for the likes of Amon Tobin, other time dipping in to his rich history of funky breaks.  First track here is off Autopirate Remixed and the second from the Schmunday School EP.  Tonnes of new stuff always seem to be coming down the pipe, so keep an eye open for this guy.

Jay-Z & Kanye West - Gotta Have It:  Another hit from Watch The Throne, short and sweet.

Jihae - Best Thing:  From 2008's Elvis Is Still Alive, smokey and reminiscent of Aimee Mann.  Super sweet.

Kastle - I Know:  Sexy stepper bass for all!

M83 - Midnight City (Alcala Remix):  New M83 album out soon!  In the meantime, let's enjoy the synthpop excess of the new remixes single.

Nguzunguzu - Wake Sleep:  I've been hyping Nguzunguzu for a while now, and oh look, he rocks it hard again.  Anyone remember that vocal sample?  Maybe sound kind of like a particular 80s house tracks?   HMMMMMMM?  So good.

Possimiste - The Flight of Lulu:  Musicbox IDM is a pleasure that everyone needs to enjoy.

RAC - Double Dragon Stage 1 (RAC Karl Kling Mix)
RAC - Duck Huntin' (Terrible Shot) (RAC Karl Kling Mix)
RAC - Mario Kart 64, Koopa Troopa Beach (RAC Mix):  RAC, the undisputed gods of remixing pretty much everything, blow shit up on the new Nintendo Vs Sega 2 album.  please give these people money.

Radiohead - Reckoner (Julianna Barwick Remix):  Barwick loads up on echo fx and looper pedals, and takes her gear rack to this Radiohead track which ends up sound more like a cover than a remix.

Stricken City - Some Say:  An oh so very British take on Vampire Weekend, perhaps?  From the new album Losing Colour.

The Morning Benders - Last Night (The Strokes cover):  Meh, what are you gonna do?  How can you even think to hate on this???

TV On The Radio - Will Do
TV On The Radio - You:  I thought the last TVOTR album was a bit 'meh', and I was shocked it got all the accolade that it did.  At least with these 2 new tracks from Nine Types Of Light, I can assuredly say "yes indeedy, I do like this."

Wu Tang & Jimi Hendrix - House Of Flying Daggers :  TAKE A SOUND!  TAKE WU-TANG!  COMBINE!  There have been a massive amount of projects like this coming out.  They are simultaneously love letters to the source material and to the Wu-Tang acapella ouvre.  This album is great for any one that loves Hendrix and Wu-Tang.  Seriously.  I'm not being saracastic...  I'm just Wu-tang-ed out.  *le sigh*  A gal needs some space, I can only handle so much wu in one year.

MP3 blog 2011/09/01

blog 2011/09/01 - welcome back to where you were before but now you're older and the magic is waning

NO I DO NOT CARE THAT YOU HAVEN'T DOWNLOADED THE LAST ONE YET, IT IS YOU THAT IS BEING SLOW NOT ME THAT IS BEING FAST!
sheesh.
Come on people, download, unzip, pop into your mp3 player and go!
Simple.  :)

Björk - Virus (Them Jeans Remix):  Any DJ in the 90s will tell you, Bjork changed the game.  No other artist sought out remixes more ferociously than the Icelandic one, everything from downtempo to breakcore to house to ambient to techno etc etc etc it was all there in the million+1 limited edition 12"s.  So of course now is the time, as happens before all new Bjork albums officially come out, that the remixes flood over our naked bodies!

Blanck Mass - Chernobyl
Blanck Mass - Weakling Flier:  "Wall Of Casios" was often used to describe Wyndham Hill records, but the aesthetic has been giving voluminous chorus and reverb pedals, some lowend filters, and a "fuck you I'm the real Goblin" attitude.  I wasn't in to the album as a whole, but the new self titled record is a must for fans of Vangelis, arpeggiator psych, and new-age-with-attitude.

Coss - Burn It Down:  From the new 'Before I Awoke', this guy isn't opening up new territory, but more retreading familiar sounds in style.  For fans of that Rawkus sound.

Dillon Francis - Beautician 2.0:  Synths-ahoy!  This is the way I like my electro.  Clean, exceptionally produced, and full exposition of what one can do with a DAW.  These are the lessons of 8-bit video game music brought to fruition.

Eleanor Friedberger - My Mistakes
Eleanor Friedberger - Owl's Head Park:  Yes, the voice does sound familiar!  IT IS INDEED the woman from Fiery Furnaces, and she's still as quirky as ever.  Like this year's PJ Harvey album, you might not instinctively be drawn to it, but yields a pile of awesome.  OK, this is not quite as good as the Harvey album, but "Last Summer" is an achievement in modern oddball pop music.

Holy Other - Touch:  Dubstep slowed down a tad!

Icona Pop - Manners:  Hmmm sounds remarkably like Alex Winston!

Lil B - Game
Lil B - Unchain Me:  So yeah, guy pisses off hiphop world by titling new album I'm Gay.  That's kind of funny.  And the response, of course, terrifying.  Dear angry hiphoppers:  fuck you douchebags.

Mexicans With Guns - Jaguar:  We dropped some MWG before, but besides that time this is my next favourite track off of Ceremony.  If you're a Buraka Som Siesta fan, this will definitely be up your alley.  Lots of electro, some great verses, a big hodge-podge of party-time.

Porcelain Raft - Talk To Me (Pierce & Pierce's Epilogue Remix):  Low and subtle, the way to go!

Sea Oleena - Southbound:  Gorgeous restrained pop.

The Jezabels - Endless Summer:  OMG total ecstatic indie rock.  From the new album Prisoner.

The Weeknd - Rolling Stone
The Weeknd - The Zone:  This group is really hit and miss.  Thursday is a bit more hit, but still I am only in to half the tracks.  Kudos for bringing something new to the table though.

Washed Out - Before:  Within And Without didn't really grab me except for a few tracks, and this is definitely one of my faves.
