MP3 blog 2012/03/29

blog 2012/03/29 - last call at the bar for glowsticks and despair

Q-BOUNCE IS HAPPENING TOMORROW!  If you are near Ottawa, check it out:
http://www.facebook.com/events/279891165418044/

Apparat Organ Quartet - 123 Forever (Robotaki Remix):  When you hear the unknowable term "electronica", this is what really should spring to all of our minds.  Gloriously happy electronic machines singing us to bliss before our hurried metallic executions.

Beach House - Myth:  I do not think the new album Bloom is out yet, but always good to have more Beach House for the springtime.

Bravestation - Signs Of The Civilized:  There is something SO 1980s about this song, like a it fell off the Lost Boys soundtrack, with it's steel drums and funk-light synth bass, mixed with not-quite-Peter-Gabriel-but-maybe-the-guy-who-sang-NeverEndingStory-vocals....  And yeah that's a good thing.

Brother Ali - Shine On ft Nikki Jean:  The new EP/album The Bite Marked Heart finds Ali a bit sentimental and moody.  He's got solid yet subdued beats and shining wordplay, but there are few moments of uplifting funk that crowned his prior album Us.  If there are any fans of The Roots that don't have a ?uestlove-shaped crush on Ali right now, this should bridge that gap.

CSLSX & I Break Horses - Violent Sea:  Smooth and chill and it feels like the instrumental version of an ecstatic pop song.  I almost wish there was another version where the vocals took the forefront, but wow this version is fine too.

CutOff! CutOff! - Icefield:  For such a chill plodding bass track, I'm shocked it's so short!  But I'll take it, regardless.

Ford & Lopatin - Emergency Room:  The vocals totally do it for me in that Max Tundra kinda way, and the bass might as well be Gary Numan, so we're all good here.  From the new release Channel Pressure.

M.I.A. - Bad Girls:  Probably my favourite MIA track in a long while!   Not a dancefloor stormer, but they don't need to be, either.  And the video is amazing.

Pretty Lights - We Must Go On:  Pretty indeed, you sexy pile o downtempo breakbeats!

Qluster - Nachts In Berlin 1:  The new album Antworten was a surpising find!  Consisting of what sounds like mostly solo piano, it is incredibley produced and so damn seductive.  If you buy only one contemporary piano album a year, this one should  (so far) be at the top of your list.

Shlohmo - (inside):  My Shlomo binge continues.  This track taken from "Fine, Thanks".

The Flaming Lips - Butterfly, How Long It Takes To Die:  You know what sucked?  That stupid "Gummy Skull" idea.  You know what shockingly didn't suck?  The StroboTrip idea.  OK, so the crappy device isn't quite Gysin's Dream Machine, but the 3-track "EP" contains a 6 hour centerpiece that... well...  OK it's not so bad.  For 6 hours of continuous psychedelia, it's pretty darn satisfying.  And I'll probably listen to it more in my life that Kawabata Makoto's 8-volume private tape collection, so there's that.

The Mountain Goats - Dilaudid (Marrtronix Version):  Different mix of this classic, off the Dilaudid EP.  That release is for essentialists only

They Might Be Giants - Dirt Bike (Other Thing Brass Band version)
They Might Be Giants - Mr. Me (Other Thing Brass Band version):  2 classic TMBG tracks... now with BIG BRASS!  So so so amazing.

Xiu Xiu - Hi
Xiu Xiu - Hi (acoustic):  2 versions!  I couldn't help it, I love this song and couldn't choose one over the other.  New album, Always, out soon/now!

Young Man - Nothing:  Slow build pop grooves that are the perfect way to end this all!

MP3 blog 2012/03/23

blog 2012/03/23 - oh my sickness, it spills forth

Alaska in Winter - Demons:  Epic strings abound in this single from the new album Suicide Prevention Hotline.

Alex Winston - Everlasting Light (The Black Keys cover):  It's not quite Sister Wife, but her squeaking voice does a great job on this soon-to-be-karaoke-classic.

Alina Simone - Glitterati:  When you need to wash that Florence and her machine taste from your mouth.  From the new album Make Your Own Danger.

Fat Trel - Rolling:  BASS AND SNAPS 4EVAH!

Gemini Club - By Surprise:  Great little pop ditty from the new album By Surprise.

Gemma Hayes - Cloudbusting (live) (Kate Bush cover):  OMG YAY YAY YAY

Good Feeling Levels - Pretty Lights (Antiheros Remix):  Hey, remember when AIM dropped that lick way-back-when?  Yeah me too, but oh so nice to have it back in my life again.

Jacques Greene - These Days:  This cat is one of my favourite producers right now, riding a line Sepalcure and Andy Stott.  From the release Concealer.

James Blake - A Case Of You (Joni Mitchell cover):  I've been having a long-standing shrug against Blake, but oh this brings back the love.

James Drake - Find Your Limit:  The James Drake mashup album produced less WOWZAS than I was hoping for, but this minimal rework hits the spot.

Jean Grae - I Rock On
Jean Grae - Uh Oh ft Talib Kweli:  Cookies Or Comas has to be the best title for a hiphop album ever.  ha.

Kyoka - HADue:  Off the appropriately titled iSH single, I love me some mutant technoes.

Lissi Dancefloor Disaster - Oh My God:  Is anyone else reminded of 99 Red Balloons, or is it just me?  If not, you're missing out not being inside my head.

Listening Mirror - Wet Roads:  Lovely vocal drone from the new album Resting In Aspic, which of course will delight all ambient fans out there.

Machinedrum & Azealia Banks - Needsumluv:  It's hard to think that Machine Drum is only getting the respect he deserves now!  But here he goes big with young'un Banks and drops some hot shit.

Massive Attack - Hymn of the Big Wheel (Egyptrixx Remix):  If this puts sentimental shivers up your spine, chances are you are 30 years old or older.  I curtsy to you, fine elder traveller of the musics worlds!

Shlohmo - Places
Shlohmo - Same Time:  HEY REMEMBER WHEN I SAID I TOTALLY HAVE A CRUSH ON SHLOMO?  Yeah, I'm still digging all their stuff, and these 2 are from the Bad Vibes album.  So so so good.

MP3 blog 2012/03/13

blog 2012/03/13 - oh glory be the rains that wash away the crap on my back porch

Active Child - Diamond Heart (Man Without Country Remix):  More deeply sexy modern R&B for that end-of-day groove.

Antony & The Johnsons - Candy Says (live) (Velvet Underground cover):  Oh perfect, just perfect.

Grimes - Genesis (Ryan Hemsworth Remix ft Deniro Farrar):  I'm not all on the Grime buzz as much as the rest of the world, but do appreciate remixes that get rhymed on.  Yes, it's a bit juvenile linguistically, but the flow is pretty good.

Jay-Z & Kanye West - Niggas In Paris (MiMOSA Remix):  Speaking of flow, make way for the masters.

Kane Ikin & David Wenngren - Call:  The new album Strangers is a little bit cold and a little bit ethereal, very much recommended for contemporary ambient / postrocky soundscape fans.

Kathryn Calder - New Frame of Mind
Kathryn Calder - Right Book:  Calder's new album is Bright And Vivid and it has a lot of good things going for it.  A number of singles pop out at me right away, but I will chew on the whole thing for a while.  Highly recommended for fans of Jenn Grant and Neko Case.

Ladyhawke - Black, White And Blue:  A big-room pop veneer, but that doesn't mean you should skip it!

Leonard Cohen - Crazy To Love You:  HOLY SHIT, new Leonard Cohen?  Hurray, so glad he's still alive.  I didn't love the whole album, but this song is perfectly sweet.

Nick Waterhouse - Some Place:  Oh so rambunctous!  From the new album Time's All Gone.

Owen Pallett - Don't Stop:  Great little track off the rare A Swedish Love Story EP from 2010.

Perfume Genius - Hood:  New album from PG is out!  I liked a few tracks off the last one, and I imagine this one will be about as par.

Phantogram - Don't Move:  Big break girlpop is totally my thing.

Philip Glass vs Lyrics Born - Leila Dies (DJ BC Glassworks mashup):  from the Glassworks mashup collection, this is the track that really did it for me.

Santigold - Big Mouth:  The new single!  Doesn't move me quite the way I had hoped, but still pretty dope.

Shady Blaze - Stars Will Light A Way:  Love the flow AND the beat on this one.

Shlohmo
- The Way U Do
Shlohmo - Wen Uuu:  Shlomo is my new favourite producer.  HOw come I never heard of him until now?  SO FUCKING GOOD.  These are from the new Vacation EP, hot for 2012, but I got his older stuff too and it's allllll good.

Smog - I'm New Here:  WHAT.  I HAD NO IDEA.  No idea that Gil Scott-Heron covered motherfucking badass Bill Callahan for this track!  It's like the inverse of the mindfuck of discovering that Sam Amidon's Relief was actually an R. Kelly cover.  WOAH WOAH I'M FREAKING OUT HERE PEOPLE.

The Dears - Blood:  This sounds like the early 90s post-grunge surge, but oh yes I need me some of that Soundgarden-golden-age power chordage right now.

MP3 blog 2012/03/09

blog 2012/03/09 - this slips out and clacks along and finds its way.

Band Of Skulls - The Devil Takes Care of His Own:  Some totally appropriate barroom rocking, from the new album Sweet Sour

Breton - Sandpaper:  I guess it's fair to say Jamie Woon laid the groundwork for this overdriven superbright pop music.  Fron The Blanket Rule EP.

CFCF - Upon the Hill:  Bonus track from The River EP, brings me back to the good ol' Dirty Three days of instrumental glory.

Christoph Andersson - Capital:  All the pop goodness of Hot Chip with the funky house you've come to love.

Cloud Nothings - Fall In:  Another track from the new album Attack on Memory!   I'm really enjoying it, highly recommended.

Coltrane Motion - I Forgot There Was A War On:  I love his sweet saucey voice.  It's like Vampire Weekend, but with the less of the eye-stabby elements.

DakhaBrakha - Baby: what the i don't even huh?

Dirty Three - Ashen Snow:  The verdict is that I am sadly disappointed with Toward The Low Sun since I had such great hopes for it, but this is one of the few tracks that really jumped out at me.

DJ Nut Nut - Special Dedication (Sigma Remix):  94 ragga classic gets the dust-off and remix!  CLASSIC CHOON.  I had the original mixes of this back in the day, and oh that vinyl was worn worn worn.  One of the benefits of the remixing is that they often come with the original version on the flipside, so keeping that track alive with a new mastering and new pressing.

Miike Snow - Devil's Work (Keys N Krates Remix):  Suuuuuuch a hot remix!  And I love that they chop the classic Lucifer sample.

Rich Aucoin - The Little Creatures Know It, The Greatest Secret In the World:  CANADA BRINGS YOU THE EPIC POP ISH.  Wow, what a massive song this is.  Definitely check out the whole album  We're All Dying To Live because there are a number of delights on it.  Also be sure to check out the brilliant video for this track.  Mind you, I think its just titled "It".  Annoying/clever move on there part, they split this song in to three parts on the CD, making it have an insta-radio-edit version.  But even the video has the first part, so shouldn't the video be "The Little Creatures Know It"?  Anyways, awesomeness abound.  I edited all three parts together for yr listening pleasure.

Shigeto - Huron River Drive:  Remember discovering Tortoise?  That smoothed out electro jazz basement vibe?  This totally brings me back in to that space where druggy white kids discovered dub.

Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Phonat Remix):  The best skrillex remix EVER!   And probably the only Skrillex you'll see around there here parts.  Dump all that BRO shit, and extract the awesome fragments left over.   Nice.

Sleigh Bells - Comeback Kid
Sleigh Bells - End Of The Line
Sleigh Bells - You Lost Me:  The new album Reign Of Terror doesn't know if it wants to sound more like School Of Seven Bells or AC/DC.  Consequently, it is when they strike the notes of the former that they really make it work.

The Knocks - Brightside (The Sound of Arrows Remix)
The Knocks - Midnight City ft Mandy Lee (M83 cover):  Ecstatically bouncey pop house?  Sure, and add an M83 cover while you're at it!  EXPLOSION.  M83 is the new standard for any electropop group.  Get on it.,

Torch - Slow Down ft Meek Mill, Wale, Stalley & Triple C's:  And let's end off with some contemporary boombap goodness!

MP3 blog 2012/03/04

blog 2012/03/04 -  let's get this out the weekend is now

Q-BOUNCE is on March 30th:  http://www.facebook.com/events/279891165418044/
If you are near Ottawa, you should be there.

Big Freedia - Booty Whop:  BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP BEND IT OVER BOOTY WHOP !!!

Britta Persson - Some Girls Some Boys:  ahhh so classical and traditional and pleasant, like a 70s pop song slowed down and done as a traditional folk ballad.

Capybara - Neighbor Crimes:  VAmpire Weekend goes mumbley?  From the album Dave Drusky.

Christian Martin - Waiting:  Who cares about the diva vocals, this track is all about that crazy ass bass.  This has "subwoofer test" all over it.

Corin Tucker - Riley:  Hey remember how Wild Flag were kind of disappointing in that they didn't satisfy your teenage lust for more SK?  Yeah, me too.  THIS hits that spot.

EMA - Take One Two:  This is pretty much the most powerful song I've heard all year.  It is the same visceral rush as when I first heard Scout Niblett's Kiss.  It puts chills down my spine.  From the bonus CD of the incredible album Past Life Modern Saint, and was released as a single to help fight bullying, and has the most stunning video of EMA and her friends, comraderies in queerness trapped in a trailer park.  http://vimeo.com/36009480

FaltyDL - Brazil ft Lily MacKenzie:  Slick steppy breaks and all, but it's really the smooth and soulful vocals that are allowed to shine.  They are gorgeous.

Giraffage - Moments
Giraffage - Waste Yr Time:  2 little tastes of the new album Comfort.  Moments, with its flood of sounds, comes across like a more dance-floor friendly James Ferraro.  And Waste Yr Time is like listening to an old U-Ziq record with processed vocals on top.  The album on the whole has too much pumpy compressor action for me to love it as a whole, but some great gems in there, especially for fans of early 2000s Ghostly International-style electro breakbeat sounds.

Grinderman - Evil (Silver Alert Remix ft Matt Berninger):  Off the expectedly dissapointing remix album (Grinderman 2 RMX), this one actually has a winning formula:  Make Nick Cave feel like even more of a monster, and get The National's Berninger on board.

Heems - You Have to Ride the Wave ft Danny Brown & Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire:  So fucking heavy and so fucking good.

Jenny Gillespie - Creature of Our Make:  Wonderful song from the new Belita EP.

Magic Man - Layers:  Serene and understated and just so right.

The Irrepressibles - In This Shirt (Röyksopp Remix):  The post-Antony ope    atics get the epic workout treatment!

The Lonely Forest - Live There:  Reminds me of the Weakerthans, but more R.E.M.

The Morning Benders - Cold War (Wallpaper Winter Remix):  It takes restraint to take a bombast rock song and strip it down like this, so kudos!

The Roots - Kool On ft Greg Porn & Truck North
The Roots - Sleep:  Undun was practically an EP, but it has a few gems on it.  It slipped out at the end of 2011, and was a welcome gift for eager fans jonesing for just one more hit.

The Twilight Sad - Seven Years Of Letters:  Always epic and great, from Seven Years of Letters.
