Charli XCX - I'll Never Know: The marimba beat reminds me of the best Architecture In Helsinki, and the pop vocals are up there with the best of the year. So good.
Cultfever - Collector: Ever since Fiery Furnaces were never able to come close to the zenith of their debut, there has been a Blueberry Boat-shaped hole in my heart, and this song does well to pay tribute to it.
Diplo - Express Yourself ft Nicky B: We have 2 NICKY B tracks up for you this week, so best you all pay attention and dig this shit. Hot hot hot flavour from New Orleans that is giving Freedia a run for her money. Once again Diplo is so far ahead of the curve that you can't even see his taillights.
Ducky - Overdose: Oh god, that chorus loop just has me all swooney! *melt*
Edda Magnason - Jona (Vidderna Remix): Reminiscient of the most poppy Knife tracks, like Marble House.
Jason Burns - Back To You: And sometimes you jus want some chill bass loops.

Patrick Watson - Lighthouse: I haven't heard the new full length Adventures In Your Own Backyard yet, but I'm liking the slow simmer on this one. Just wait until the horns hit you at the 3 minute mark.
Perfume Genius - Dark Parts: While being rather morose and sullen, the new album Put Your Back N 2 It is totally hypnotic and enthralling. Beyond the clever title is emotive and concise songwriting that has been banging around in my head for days after hearing it. I'm going to let it simmer-down a bit more, but this one has me excited.

Royal Headache - Wilson Street: The self-titled Royal Headache album has production qualities that I consider deceptively garage. It SOUNDS garage, but you can tell there is dynamite precision going on here. Short, sweet, and a bundle of rock and roll fun. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Wil Bolton - Passing: The creaks and field recordings go so well with a pulsing synth organ. From the new album Under A Name That Hides Her.

Andre Lodemann - Coming Home: Oh well hello there slinky little tech funk, what you doin'? My favourite little number off the new album Fragments 1.
Andrew Bird - Danse Carribe: New album is Break It Yourself and so far so good. It's what you wanted, what you hoped for, and my god after his virtuoso performance in the finale act of the Muppet Movie you know you want some more damn whistling AND DAMMIT YES THERE IS GOOD WHISTLING.
Bastille - Overjoyed (Yeasayer Remix): I like the touch that Yeasayer give on the remix front. It's pretty refined and doesn't throw back to their own trappings, kind of like how most Hot Chip remixes fall flat, but really crafts some quality stuff that doesn't drown it's source material.
Chromatics - Birds of Paradise (Nikos Toscani Remix): I like satisfying plodding beats like this one, the simple pop really sits well on it.
Henry Mancini - Expierment in Terror (Creatures Bootleg): MANCINI, RESPECT!
I Self Devine - Hold On: holy cymbal ride batman! Biting in to some El-P claustrophobia stylee, this song really flies, in a scream at the screen kinda way.
Larvae - Remarkable: Deep night breaks from the new release Exit Strategy.
Long Arm - After 4AM: And lets keep that vibe, and add some jazz grooves to it all. From The Branches.
Mystikal & Mannie Fresh - Move Something: We're entering an interesting age with original hiphoppers in the middle age, and damn takes notes gramps, because Mannie Fresh is setting the bar high.
Pinch & Shackleton - Burning Blood
Pinch & Shackleton - Jellybones: The self-titled Lp eschews to many of the boring trends that have really made dubstep and subgenres a pathetic joke over the past 5 years. In the same way that tech-house producers had to shuffle off the confines of their dying genre and reinvent themselves, Pinch & Shackleton explore new sound avenues where their powers behind the boards are put to good and not evil.
Porcelain Raft - Backwords: Ok I hate to admit it but I was rather disappointed with the new album Strange Weekend, but this track was probably my favourite.
Port St. Willow - Hollow
Port St. Willow - Orphan: The new album Holiday is something to get a listen to right away, as you're going to need to let it marinate. For me it has the preciousness of Fleet Foxes mixed with the actual emotions of someone like E.M.A.. Definitely one to watch.
St. Lucia - We Got It Wrong (Xaphoon Jones Remix): Let's end on some total bounced-out pop ish. Perfect.

2:54 - Scarlet: So is that like AM or PM? The self-titled album is female-fronted rock music that brings me back to a combination of post-Yeah Yeah Yeahs, mixed with grunge-couple era early 90s stuff like that dog. and Breeders. I'm giving it more listens, but it's growing on me quite quickly.
2KWTVR - Body Feelings: The Whitney reworks, they burn! OOOOO it burns so righteously!
Beach House - Lazuli
Beach House - The Hours: So yeah Beach House have a new album out, it's called Bloom, and yeah it's as good as you hoped. Highly recommended. Get new underwear.
Best Practices - Future Cougar: So much hard rock ish in the world, and only a bit of it all sticks to my bones. When you get the whole gang up to the mic to scream together ecstatically, that usually does it.
Bondax - All Inside: Super sultry soul bass yes.
Cannon Bros. - Out Of Here: There's something about the vocals that just reminds me of delicious high-school angst/rage/romanticism.
Carrousel - 14: I love the passion in this track.
Exitmusic - Passage
Exitmusic - The Night: Ummm I THINK I MIGHT LOVE THIS ALBUM. In what has generally been a meh year for music, when compared to the last 2, I was totally not ready for this. I don't even know how it came my way, but I popped it in randomly and holy shit it was perfect. So epic, they almost sound Canadian. highly recommended.
Pandr Eyez - Bird Song
Pandr Eyez - Shinin': 2 tracks of cheeky bass fun from the Eyes On You EP. Keep reminding yourself: not every dipshit youth grows up to be Ke$ha, some are AWESOME.
Santigold - Freak Like Me (Pickster One Remix): Santigold was always prime remix material, and here's another one on point with a banger riddim.

WARNING: things are changing around here.
WARNING: things are changing around here.
BABY.
My wife and I are expecting our first child and that will have a direct impact on the level of my activities here, as it should.
My time will be much more limited, my projects less focused, my gigs less prevalent.
I have been DJing dance parties less and less over the last few years, for a few reasons. A big part of that is getting older and less and less of my friends being able to come out and party until 2am.
And another part of it is my disillusionment with the scene in general. I realize that DJing is 50% fashion, and I just don't care about fashion.
Being a woman, when I held residencies I would get one or more random dudes come up to me on any given night and make creepy and/or sexual comments to me.
And being a larger woman immediately makes one less viable as a DJ. Female DJs are always required to have sexy glossy shots for advertisements. And if you can rock that look, less people care if you're that good. I've read bios on female DJs that even state they only started last year, but oh they're already booking tours. Oh look, a photo gallery!
I have no animosity towards other DJs that have clothing sponsorships and model on the side or can rock the queerio hipster couture, but yes it is hugely important to recognize that it is 50% fashion.
Fashion is fine! It's just not my scene. I care about sound.
And family.
I will most likely continue to work in the area of dreamer beats and ambient music and experimental production. Those were, after all, my first loves. The slogan has always been: Bedroom music for bedroom people.
Dance music drifts in utility for me if I am not being hired to play it any more. I will still do the occasional party. I am still available for events and weddings. But I won't be playing 4 times/month any more.
I will probably maintain the MP3 blog, as it occurs more organically.
After Djing a birthday party for a 2-year-old this weekend I will officially be taking a leave of absence from DJing and art projects until the end of the summer, where I already have 2 major private parties booked. After that point, I'll just play it by ear.
I am going to be training 2 proteges in 2 different cities, but details on that later. It might be a terrible disaster, you never know. :)
With the gigs I will still be doing, I probably will not be taking any further gigs in places that do not recognize gay marriage. There are many states in the USA where my wife and I would have no rights as a married couple if something were to go wrong. We could be legally denied access to each other, and to our child.
And this is not a hypothetical, these kinds of horrible things happen far too frequently to gay families across your country. (my stats counter says most of you are located in USA...)
THIS IS SERIOUS BUSINESS, PEOPLE.
I want to make my request absolutely clear: please do whatever you can to elect officials who will work enact full equality for LGBT people and families. Marriage rights is only one of many complex issues, but it's a big one, and the most symbolic.
Gay families are everywhere, and if your government or state does not recognize and support them, they are hurting families and children.
That's it for now. I will continue using the small snippets of free time I find to do what I love. And when love is involved, who knows what can happen.

The King In Yellow picks up where they left off when they originally abandoned, and hardcore fans out there will enjoy it. The Green Kingdom - Crmbld: Egress sparkles and shimmers and has many quiet meditative points, straddling the ambient and idm/folktronica worlds.

Cold Specks - Steady: I Predict A Graceful Expulsion is one of those landmark albums of the year, the kind you hear and immediately guess if it will make the top 5 of the year, or just the top 10. Another powerful Canadian voice has arrived. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
DJ T - City Life ft Cari Golden (Maya Jane Coles Remix): First of 2 MJC tracks up in this place, I've just been grooving on some excellent deep house as of late. At first I was kind of digging the Maja Jane Coles DJ mix for its selection, but then you realize it could have been assembled much better so fuckit, do it yourself.
Doldrums - I'm Homesick Sittin' Up Here In My Satellite: The party starts here with the ramshackle cacaphony! From the new album Empire Sound.
Epic45 - People Say This Place Is Slowly Dying (Reworked By Charles Vaughan): The album Weathered is mostly remixes, and all of it has a magical golden quality to it. If you want that mid-90s AFX-styled electro ambience there is much to be had here. Also tweaks the drone centres and the meowed-out downtempo bliss centres. Recommended.
Flosstradamus - Rollup: The whole footwurk phenom was kind of irritating since most producers had no idea how to really produce. It was quaint. But here we have a veteran producer riffin on the formula to some fabulous results. And be sure to check their track with Kid Sister on it as well.
Gossip - Perfect World: New Gossip out in 2012! woot.
Hectic Zeniths - I Might Drown: From the self-titled new album, this might as well be a dubbed out Flornce and the Machines remix.
John Zorn - The Invisibles
John Zorn - The Middle Pillar: The Gnostic Preludes is the most beautiful thing on Tzadik out so far this year. So accessible your mom would love it, but full of depth and and emotion.
Kate and Janelle - Star Witness (Neko Case cover) (in P.C.V.S. stairwell)
Neko Case - Star Witness: If you didn't see this on youtube (And yes, this is a youtube rip), this is an achingly beautiful rendition of Case's track by two graduates from this Canadian arts-focused high school that was slated to be closed. They are in a stairwell and are almost overwhelmed by the reverb, making it a fitting eulogy. It makes me so sad to think it receives the arbitrary axe! And despite this video going viral and it making Neko Case cry, and despite the tragedy of the school closing, the school also went ahead and raised over $50k this years for mosquito nets to prevent malaria. Yeah, jaw dropping. So here's the original, and the even superior cover. Support the youth, people.

Maps & Atlases - Remote & Dark Years: I think the new album Beware and Be Grateful sounds like what I wished TV On The Radio sounded like.
Parov Stelar - Song For The Crickets: Deep jazzy grooviness is what they do best. Forget flipping a swing groove for anthem house music, this is where it's at.
Philippe Petit with Herve Vincenti, Maria Grigoryeva, Alexander Mahniev, Vladimir Shubin - Many-Minds in Many Worlds: Swirling, varied and challenging, Philippe Petit & Friends' Cordophony is at the very least one of the most interesting contemporary classical albums out this year. Varied instrumental groupings produce tracks move in sometimes startling. I don't find this an easy listen, but very compelling. Recommended for fans of more difficult classical music and improv jazz.
Scenic - Another Sky (The Magician Remix): The Magician rocks the nu-disco like none other.

Tong Zhi)"
A
comprehensive historical account of the queer movement in modern China. Queer
China, 'Comrade' China documents the changes and developments in LGBT culture
that have taken place in China over the last 80 years. Unlike any before, this
film explores the historical milestones and ongoing advocacy efforts of the
Chinese LGBT community. The film examines how shifting attitudes in law, media
and education have transformed queer culture from being an unspeakable taboo to
an accepted social identity. The film culminates with the submission of Dr. Li
Yinhe’s Same-sex Marriage Bill to the Legislative Affairs Commission of the
National People’s Congress in 2003, a major landmark event in the ongoing
struggle for acceptance of queer identity in China.

Akira Kosemura - Xiao Ge Er: Breezy electronic IDM beats with tinkley washes of piano and guitar is practically its own genre at this point. The whole album Grassland is all like this: super Sunday cobweb removal music. This album has more going on than most in the genre.
Basket of Figs - Holland: With a voice that could be straight from the 60s and off the album "Oh Eye, Oh Night", this single stirs something inside then finishes before you even know what it was.
Cultfever - Knew You Well: Fabulous pop from the self-titled album.

Death Grips - I've Seen Footage: In some ways it's more intense than their debut, in some ways it's more listenable because there's a bit less growly-yelling. Either way The Money Store is pretty damn amazing and you kind of owe it to yourself to check it out since everyone will be talking about it. And apparently the 3rd album might even come later this year...

David’s Lyre - Hidden Ground (Drugs Remix): The moody affected pop gets a kick drumming rework and experiences that Noah And The Whale effect: uber drama songs get a xanax shaped rework.
Dictaphone - Au Botanique
Dictaphone - The Conversation: Poems From A Rooftop is new and another fantastic album in the genre of "IDM artist releases beautiul record of electronic jazz ambience sound works". Namely, my favourite genre ever. Highly recommended.
Dose - Is That You: The big shiny vocal samples would make even Fat Boy Slim blush, but it the good vibes overpower on this, my favourite track off the new album When We Were High.
Francis - Traktor: Fits nicely in that wide open field of pop between Grizzly Bear and Phoenix.
Fucked Up - The Other Shoe: Did you know that Canada wins at everything? David Comes To Life was released last year just to remind everyone that our #1 export is awesomeness.

Chromatics - Back From the Grave: The post XX age is upon us! Dreampop is king!
Guillemots - I Don't Feel Amazing Now (Mooli Remix): Guillemots have always excelled at the epic emotional rollercoaster ride, and this remix just reframes it all perfectly. Some indie rock songs just need a quality bass-synth underneath them.
Jack White - Love Interruption: I haven't really followed this guy too much, but yeah this single kind of won me over, partially for the wind instrument selection, partially for the restraint shown that would normally have put this out as a over-amped cockrocker.
James Murray - Greenlands: Floods gives us serene fuzzed out keys that would fit well on many-a-soundtrack. But between names like Floods and Greenlands, you'd imagine something much more alienating soundwise. But we'd all be wrong.

If someone told me Kimya Dawson had released an extremely long album that featured more lyrics than an Aesop Rock album AND IT INCLUDED AESOP ROCK all over it, AND it had a memorial tribute song for Captain Lou Albano, I'd think that maybe you were right because why on earth would you make that shit up? This album Thunder Thighs is easy to dismiss and oh so worthwhile to get in to. It's a rare thing: a precious twee hipster growing up and having a badass midlife crisis. She is simultaneously realizing her music career is secondary to the joys of having a kid, that all of her friends are dying early, while spending much emotional energy exorcising her thoughts about her past overdose and substance indulgence. And yeah, Aesop Rock participates. Not just a cameo, but on like 7 tracks. Seriously, WTF. Well here are two songs, and yeah, 17 minutes total. Highly recommended for those that will be in to it.

The Antlers - Hounds ft Nicole Atkins: Not quite a remix album, Together is duets and reinterpretations and oh this one is my favourite. I like that Nicole hits the lower half of the harmony. This album also has an 18 minute Bears In Heaven track on it... Neato, but only for the hardcore Antlers fans.
The Flashbulb - The Great Pumpkin Tapes: From the album Arboreal, this is what the Charlie Brown kids will be ice skating to for eternity.
Tyga - Rack City (Grandtheft Bootleg): Rack city bitch, rack rack city bitch, over and over and over.
Yoshinori Takezawa - Draumar
Yoshinori Takezawa - Licht: Dream Line is a plethora of lowkey skittering beats that provides a tiny framework for the amazing piano and guitar to shine on top of. And is it just me or does Draumar sound like an acoustic rendition of a Mike Paradinas track? Recommended for those in the sleeping bags.
Zambri - Hundred Hearts: Dreampulses from the new album House of Baasa. Having 1 heart is hard enough, 100 is TROUBLE.
Zeds Dead & Omar LinX - Coffee Break: ZD has been on the brostep train, so I was relieved to find a batch of dope tracks that get in to the synth rap business again.

Guillemots - I Don't Feel Amazing Now (Mooli Remix): Guillemots have always excelled at the epic emotional rollercoaster ride, and this remix just reframes it all perfectly. Some indie rock songs just need a quality bass-synth underneath them.
Jack White - Love Interruption: I haven't really followed this guy too much, but yeah this single kind of won me over, partially for the wind instrument selection, partially for the restraint shown that would normally have put this out as a over-amped cockrocker.
James Murray - Greenlands: Floods gives us serene fuzzed out keys that would fit well on many-a-soundtrack. But between names like Floods and Greenlands, you'd imagine something much more alienating soundwise. But we'd all be wrong.

Au Vol - Warm Bath, Gaudy As Poppies (For Sylvia): The album Apothecary, in title and sound, is full of cracked romantic notions that you just can't resist. Ottawa's Au Vol has put together a tour-de-force album of sonics ranging from the rolling ambience of this track to the twisted electroacoustic slices of Ben Frost. Avicii - Levels (RebelRebel Remix): OK, it's not a revelution in funky disco house, but it's been a while since I heard this classic sample flipped and it just took me to 1990s goodvibe flashbacks.
Azealia Banks - Fuck Up The Fun: New Banks single! Yes, she spends most of it just talking shit to her bellybutton, but it's hard to say no to badass drumline stompers.
BADBADNOTGOOD - Earl ft Leland Whitty
BADBADNOTGOOD - Limit To Your Love (James Blake cover): FUCKING BOSS. BBNG2 is the new album and it's DYNAMITE. A perfect mix of standout instrumental jazz works with a few familiar breakbeat classic covers to keep it on and on and on and on. Highly recommended.
Balam Acab - Just Stay: There's something simultaneously machinelike and cold bout this, while at the same time being equally sparklefairy. GOOD SHOW, SIR.
Bill Callahan - Heaven Help The Child: Oh oh oh this is good. Released as a split 7" with Mickey Newbury, who also does a great rendition of the same same, this is what record store day is all about. SO GOOD. I love you Mr. Callahan. You're the new Johnny Cash.

Dominik Eulberg - Metamorphose: Back in the day, tech-house/minimal producers were a dime a dozen. Through inflation and Ableton Live, they are now about a penny for a hundred. That makes it all the more surprising when someone from that scene rises so far above their peers and releases something so incredible. Eulberg's new album Diorama is amazing. If you are a fan of electronic music, whether it be the more traditional 128 bpm housey stuff, or the more lush electronica IDM stuff I'm focusing on here, get this one.
Japandroids - The House That Heaven Built: New Japandroids single! can't believe I've never seen these guys. Must rectify that.
Korallreven - Sa Sa Samoa (Elite Gymnastics Remix): Yes yes, this is pretty much here for the oldschool breakbeat samples and the whispered 'Ecstasy' sample...
Male Bonding - Year's Not Long: I haven't been all rah rah rah for Male Bonding, but I'm going to say that this song is close enough to Cloud Nothings for me to really get in to it.
Nine Horses - Wonderful World: This is what I imagine cabaret music sounds like in hell. You know, the good hell you go to for all of the drugging and anal sexing you did in your life. And it's just Matthew Barney and bjork circling each other, slowly becoming whales.
Noah & The Whale - Life Is Life (Yuksek Remix): I swear this is the ultimate band for SAD SONG WITH AWESOME HAPPY REMIX. that should be a Grammys category, for reals.

Daughter - Medicine (Elliot Luke Remix): Some songs are just so beautiful you just imagine the perfect scene in your life's movie where they'd play over. What would you be doing? Why would it matter? And when the fuck did we suddenly learn to show restraint on the dubstep cliches and actually let the song take center stage? Kudos.
Emily Wells - Passenger (Kid Koala Remix): Awwwwwwwwww yeah we always need the gentle furry caress of the kid koala.
Filtertypen - After Laughter: CHOON. Classic samples, you've heard them all before, but never quite like this.

Francis - Creek Of Lonesome Town: Sometimes I wonder what would happen to Joanna Newsom if she grew up in small-town Ohio bar instead of being fed drugs by west-coast types. Apparently she couldn't fail.
Frankie Rose - Interstellar: With the likes of Class Actress, Young Galaxy, School of Seven Bells and Austra blowing up the female-led electro pop resurgence, I had high hopes for Interstellar, but it was mostly the title track that really grooved me enough.
Goldroom - Angeles (Follow Me reMix): The low-key production reminds me of that DFA-crew confidence where they know that sometimes the basic kick and snare are fine, and it's the groove that matters.
Hot Chip - Flutes: OMG NEW HOT CHIP!!!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM!
Joel P West - The Room Behind The Fireplace (excerpt): Sometimes we need to just sit down with some fabulous quartet music. Grab a scotch and an ottoman, crank up the hi-fi.

Alias - Wanna Let It Go: Such a smashing joint from last year's Fever Dream. Love it oh so much.
El-P - The Full Retard: Oh oh oh OH FUCK YES! El-P IS BACK IN FINE FORM, PEOPLE. After apparently losing most of his knew album last year to a hard drive failure, we pick it up, dust ourselves off, and get back to putting in WORK. Perfect.
Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch - Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby: Got back in to this track looking in to the documentary about the live performances of the songs from Oh Brother Where Art Thou because yeah the internet can be a timesink.
Gold & Youth - Time To Kill: The xx influence is evident, but what do we care? It's still a great track.
Loney Dear - What Have I Become: Probably my favourite track from the album Hall Music
Mr. Gnome - The Way: New Mr. Gnome! To me they are like Tennis or Joy Formidable: These random songs find their way in to my inbox and they are always SO GOOD, and I'm in love with them without even hearing the whole album. New album is Softly Mad and I am super duper excited.
Niki & The Dove - Mother Protect (Goldroom Remix): oh. OH YAY. I loved the original, and in the spirit of The Knife it needed a bigger boppier remix.
Perfume Genius - Gay Angels
Perfume Genius - Look Out, Look Out: I recently went back to relisten to Learning (from 2010) because of a glowing review and you know, it's mostly just these two songs that really do it for me. Gay Angels doesn't strike out like a pop song, but holds its own on atmosphere and tension alone. And of course Look Out Look Out is that emo-perfect pop song.
