This mix goes back to a number of classic tracks I had on vinyl, but never got around to using in a mix.
It has been 9 years since Chinchillin' first came out! And 11 years since Poetry Is For Faeries. I still receive the most fan messages from those two, particularly because they were traded heavily on soulseek and napster back in the day.

Allá - Es Tiempo: Wait for it... wait for it... Just when you're terrified of ending up with another indie cliché Animal Collective style shamble-song, the shambles (which never truly shamble, but build logically) give birth to a near perfect indie rock track. Ecstatic! Only the 2nd or 3rd time through did I actually realize she was singing in Spanish. I haven't heard the full length, but it's from 2008 and called "Es Tiempo" and you should check it out.

An Horse - Camp Out: Sometimes twee bands will tune their guitars just like Sleater-Kinney and have to vent off some of their aggro/emo tendencies. This is not a bad thing!
An Horse - Horizons: These tracks are from the 2008 album "Rearrange Beds", which I can only assume refers to either summer camp accommodations, or partner swapping. Or both? Anyways, this isn't fully formed perfection, but it is some darn fun grrrlpoppunk.

Arms and Sleepers - Butterflycatcher: I love chime breakdowns. Sometimes I just imagine a band made up entirely of triangle players and a beautiful singer. Well this has more going on than that, but is just as wonderful. Almost.

Bat For Lashes have such a fully formed gem with Two Suns. Building with what at a glance is a synthpop legacy, the composition itself actually owes more to mid-90s Sonic Youth and Mogwai than any Ladytron revival.
This album is an epic emotional adventure movie, with all of the grit and cynicism of adulthood recontextualizing what was once an innocent paradise.
Highly recommended.

Cardopusher - Everything Is A New Surprise: The least surprising thing about Cardopusher is his awesomeness. NO MORE BORING STEPPER BEATS! Fusing the fun of Kid 606 and (some of the) complexity of Venetian Snares in to a far more straight-ahead framework, this producer is just wonderful.

Fuck Buttons - Flight Of The Feathered Serpent: The Fuck Buttons are a force to be reckoned with. When the Boredoms went trancy and hippy at the end of the 90s, they planted seeds. And years later, the Fuck Buttons emerge as one of the few bands that take that 2nd-wave-Boredoms freakout glory and spin it in to something jaw-dropping, and not just something that makes people want to slap them (Holy Fuck I'm looking at your way). With a strong meticulous sensibility that reminds of the amazing Battles LP, this is one that will peak on a number of best-of-2009 lists. Highly recommended for indie hipster fucks everywhere.
Fuck Buttons - Surf Solar (7'' Edit): From the Surf Solar 7'' EP, this version brings down the 10+ minute original in to a single-sized morsel. Enjoy, but be sure to check the full length version on the LP eventually.

Hauschka - Rode Null: More contemporary instrumental music on this blog edition! From the 2008 album Ferndorf, Hauschka is a big part of the Fat Cat Record rennaissance. Fat Cat were mavens in the late 90s, releasing quality IDM-cum-postrock fare. Now that we are a generation past Tortoise, it's time for bands like Hauschka to shine.

Mastodon - Oblivion: OMFG! MASTODON! Wow, I am shocked how much I like this album. It's like a cross between Alice In Chains, Ozzy Osbourne and Soundgarden, with a dash of Dragon Force flair tossed in for good measure. I'm not a metal head, I don't listen to much at all, but this... this! It's everything glorious about that melodic 1994 grunge-metal production, but 15 years later. The album is Crack The Skye, a must for any metal fan on your xmas gift list.

I listen to lots of music. I have automated processes set up to harvest me random music, and I dive in to folders of thousands of tracks I didn't specifically choose to hear, and from that well I dredge up a lot of incredible surprises.
The works by So Percussion are on of those surprises and delights. I hadn't heard of them before, but they seem associated with the Bang On A Can collective. These tracks are from the 2006 album "Amid the Noise", and redefine our perceptions on percussion ensembles.
With a depth and intricacy that is beyond any syncopated drum machine, this LIVE ENSEMBLE creates stellar rhythmworks that many producers couldn't even put on their MIDI trackers.
Highly recommended for fans of live drumming, Taiko music, Steve Reich, and Aphex Twin.

Some big big new here folks: We have an exclusive track leaked out of France. Check this release ASAP for a rare track from the one-and-only Melissa Laveaux.
We are very excited.
In other news, I did a quickie edit of http://thetastates.com/ . I added in a widget to scroll my latest blogspot entries, which pairs well with the Facebook fan page feed that is on there.
This is of course ramping up to a proper edit of the site: a new mix to be posted. Hopefully within a week there will be more downtempo up. Check back soon...

Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto with Ensemble Modern - Broken Line 2: Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto have been making some of the best 21st century bliss-out minimalism for the past 10 years.
With just Sakamoto at piano and Noto on laptop, their meditative sound gardens raised the bar for the stirring beauty of contemporary minimalism. Now teamed with Ensemble Modern, their 2008 release "utp_" brings together a slightly fuller sound while maintaining the joys and curiousities of their earlier releases.
Recommended for fans of contemporary classical, abstract minimalism, Brian Eno, Satie, Luigi Archetti, etc.

Brother Ali - Tight Rope: Ali is back with a hot new album "Us". I have to give it another listen or two to see if it will rank in the year's top releases, but so far it's super tight and really dope.
Check this track out for another first: A fairly major MC, and a braggadocio one at that, that actually talks about homosexuality in a compassionate way. Not a single 'faggot' reference on the whole album.

Eryka Badu & Ziggy Marley - I Luv U (Dubstep Mix): Some chilled out dubstep bliss. You can't get much more chilled out than with Badu, Marley, and a dubby stepper.

Jesus Lizard - Puss: HOLY HOT REISSUES! The Jesus Lizard's "Inch" is a must have, unless you have all of the 7"s it collects on it already. Puss is my favourite Jesus Lizard song of all time. I must have been 14 when I got the Jesus Lizard / Nirvana split (Nirvana's track was the lovely Oh The Guilt), and it rocked my world. Inch is highly recommended for any hard rock fans, especially if you are a youngin that never listed to Jesus Lizard, and think that Jay Reatard came out of nowhere.

Metronomy - A Thing For Me (Blackout Crew Remix): WTF is this? Holy shit, I was not expecting this. Metronomy is all indie electro rock pop getting remixed by the latest bloghouse superstars... and here we have BLACKOUT CREW ON THE REMIX? Woah.
Blackout Crew, for those that don't know, are the ambassadors of Donk Music, a small subgenre of Euro hard-house/gabber that only really exists in Northern Ireland. They were famously featured in a Vice documentary, and got some internet WTF notoriety for their sickeningly addictive video for Put A Donk On It. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckMvj1piK58
So yes, this is total rave cheese, but I can't resist. This is just awesome. Pretty much any time you have a song, there is only one thing to do: PUT A DONK ON IT.

Natalia Lafourcade - Azul: Representing Mexico, Lafourcade is just a delight. I am often confused about how much I can get really excited about singer-songwriters that aren't speaking English, but it all works so well. Like Shugo Tokumaru, the composition is just so full and brimming with intelligence and passion, you know exactly what she means, even if you have no idea what she's saying. From the 2009 album "Hu Hu Hu".

Pearson - A Fade Out Is A Cop Out: Some great light Canadian indie rock styles. They're from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Who knew! Recommended for fans of The Acorn, Rural Alberta Advantage, and well, CBC-radio indie rock in general.

The Xx - Islands: Yeah, so good like trying to just limit this band to a chance few for your Ipod. Just get the damn album, ok?

They Might Be Giants - Feign Amnesia: I am a long-time TMBG fan (seriously, like I have a list of their songs that actually make me cry,) but for some reason didn't listen to The Else until recently. By no means a revolutionary statement, I was surprised at how fun it was.
They Might Be Giants - The Shadow Government: If you're new to the TMBG world, be sure to start with their self-titled debut, Flood, and Apollo 18. But this one's poppy, fun, and pretty solid. Recommended if you could get in to Factory Showroom. Also recommended if you run a meth-lab and want a funny song about your life.

MP3 blog 2009/09/21
blog 2009/09/21 - A trip down memory lane to memories I never had but form with plastic
Did you know that memories can't be trusted? Given a certain willingness on both of our parts, so sensory deprivation and so narcotics, I bet I could eventually implant memories of your days in the swinging 60s and the flapperful 30s. (Because don't you know that everyone in the 30s was a flapper?)
So come with me on another special GOLDEN OLDIES post, as we try and rework the malleable outlines of memory and re-encode ourselves with the most awesomest of probably doubt and charismatic adventures, all set to music that came out long before I was of age to properly enjoy it as new and fresh.
First thing first, and I do mean first: I have been listening to a lot of big band jazz as of late., especially from the 1930s. It's just incredible stuff.
Actually, I have been frequently alternating between 30s big band and late 90s Japanese Noise. I don't really know why, and maybe it's not best to psychoanalyze too much, but it is akin to a Swedish bath where you go from the chilly waterfall to the hottub in a few short steps...

Larry Clinton - Over The Rainbow (1939)
Next up, we have sample sources. When we go back to music of prior decades, we are now looking back within a new context, where the hits of yore have mostly been recontextualized via youtube cover song or having their entire melody ripped verbatim for a Daft Punk track.
So here are three tracks I have been grooving to, each of which has been famously sampled.
George McCrae - I Get Lifted (1974): Most obviously sampled by Keith Murray on the appropriately titled "Get Lifted", as well on Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg.
The Winstons - Amen Brother (1969): Pretty much the most famous sample of all electronic music, the break at 1:26 was sampled and passed around as "The Amen Break", instantly adding 2 inches to Alec Empire's penis.
The Seeds - I Can't Seem To Make You Mine (1966): OK, so this one isn't so famous, but Diplo beautifully reworking the guitar line and the "Girl I love you..." vocal part for his track Put That Pussy On Me. But the song itself kicks so much ass, the way the guy yelps and cries after each line is gorgeous, and was a technique that seemingly inspired Ian Svenonius's style on The Make-Up.
The next batch will focus on 80s alternative rock. Technically, I was alive in the 80s, but really my musical education didn't even really begin starting until 1989, and then just barely.
Jim Carroll Band - People Who Died (1980): The recent passing of Jim Carroll was the reason for starting this post. I just needed any excuse to post this track. Her was a person who died. R.I.P.
The Motor Totemist Guild - Farmer Without Strings (1985): I love this quirky post-nowave avant rock that was under the surface in the 80s. Follow the paths from back then to modern artists like Final Fantasy and Parenthetical Girls, hell even Architecture In Helsinki. Tellingly enough, this track is from the compilation "California Outside Music Association". Nuff said.
The Tapes - (I Fall) Head First (1980): The Tapes LP 'Party' came as a surprise and a delight. Listening to old new-wave rock stuff, I just often can't be bothered to care, but here was this LP with quirky competency that rivaled The Talking Heads!
The Tapes - Lg_Dg (1980): You don't have to purr to be a cat girl!
Only 2 tracks in the next segment, but oh what 2 tracks they are. Dream pop bliss!
Anne Briggs - Fine Horseman (1971): If you listened to this track without knowing the date, you'd wonder if it was coming off a leaked Alela Diane album. 38 years later, this enigmatic folk style is back in flourish.
Nico - I'm Not Saying (1965): By no means obscure, but such a great song to return to.
And for the rest of this post, here's just a bunch more oldies from 64-81, a quality 18 years, easily summarized by the following 9 hits.

Mama Cass Elliot - Make Your Own Kind Of Music (1969): You hear the opening strings and you know it's some good stinky cheese and you just love it. Go Mama, go!
Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun (1974): This song used to terrify me when I was a little child. A catchy pop song about DEATH? WTF? It's haunting and paradoxical and stuck with me through the years.
The Ad Libs - The Boy From New York City (1965): I have a huge heart-on for acapella doowop intros.
The Dixie Cups - Iko Iko (1965): This song blows my mind in it's clever addictiveness. A kid's jump-rope song has never been so satisfying.
The Stranglers - Golden Brown (1981): I first heard this song when Spooky Ruben covered it and put it on his Japan-only Wendy McDonald EP. I was delighted that the original was even better and featured a rare instance of pop-chart harpsichord.

Orv Owens - Obey Authority
"Why can't I get my child toobey me?" This is a question that most parents have asked but no one is giving good answers. This tape will create a desire in the childs subconscious to obey.
My friend Heather found this tape back around 1995. It says "(c) 1999" in the photo here, but that must be a new edition.
We were a gangly mess of sensitive art-punk-nerds and tittered in joy and laughter with this great find.

I got this from an old Sally Ann downtown when I was in high school. It closed soon after, I think. It was in the basement in a bin of caseless tapes. This one was white and just said "Obey Authority" on it. Years later I did some research and learned that this was made by Orv Owens, a Christian Fundamentalist mind-control guru (and choral singer!) who still sells quit-smoking and lose-weight sleep tapes online. This is the only thing I've ever recorded from tape to digital. I don't even remember how to anymore. :)

Bouncer Crew - Smokesum ft Frank-N-Dank: From the 2007 album Xtasy for Ladies, this is the single standout to be found. The album is OK, but in an album that is all party and no studying, you often end up with one jam and then 11 or so hangovers.

Calvin Harris - Flashback: The new LP is Ready For The Weekend, and while the sophomore effort doesn't come to matching his debut, if you are a fan already you'll probably be super in to this. Me, I like some of it and worry he's heading in to Moby territory, releasing "generic electronica for white college kids". For Flashback here, I can appreciate him channeling that early 90s pop dancefloor. So sugary sweet, you don't even bother to worry if it's bad for you.

Down The Lees - Talk is Not Cheap: What starts off as a paint-by-numbers indie pop song sticks to it's structural roots and builds and builds upwards, adding more drums, more organ, more chants and OMG the bliss of the indie song because a mantra of ecstasy.

This is from their 2008 album A Thousand Shark's Teeth, and actually acts as a stylist precursor for this years album by The Decemberists! You can hear just why she was chosen to perform the parts of "The Queen". An astounding talent.

I have to listen to the new Mountain Goats LP The Life Of The World To Come a bit more before I deliver my own verdict on it. It doesn't conjure up the same emotional and narrative ride of the last 2 albums, but I haven't given up hope.
The two tracks here are the most engaging on the album, so expect much more mellow after these.
Each song is titled after a biblical passage, and the entire work has a much more straightforward and subdued tone to it. I haven't read the backstory, but there has probably been a funeral or two between this album and the last.

Chris Schlarb - I: aaaaand we slow things right down with this quaint textural classical/ambient piece from the 2007 album Twilight & Ghost Stories. Pieces like this sit like jazz on my brain. A smattering of somewhat disconnected-yet-interworking layers of guitar, piano, radio organ static, reverbed strings, wind chimes and field recordings sit perfectly on my weary head.

Discuss - One Thing In Its Right Place: Dope downtempo/IDM from the 2008 LP "Aeration Swells". The beat hooks you right from the get-go, the subdued background voice tries to work it's way to the forefront, and finally comes to attention but still lacks coherence.

Emmy The Great - We Almost Had A Baby: I was initially head-over-heels for this band based on the first few leaked singles. Their full length was a disappointment, I'll admit it. But when I take this song, and built a playlist with this, "Hold On" and "24", I get butterflies in my stomach and want to dance and cry at the same time. Keep your ears affixed, Emmy The Great are potentially poised for some miraculous.

Esso & Woody - Don't Stop: The MJ estate is working on high-profile massive budget reworks, but in the meantime the underground has reworked and sampled MJ a million times over, and here we are again, this time sampling some horns riffs from the disco era and laying lyrics on top.
Filastine - Blung: Always one worth checking out, the latest Filastine LP "Dirty Bomb" didn't grab me as a whole. But fret not, as this track has just the amount of innovation and swagger, ironically seemingly effecting some hypnotic swirls that are almost Muslimgauze-ish. Good stuff.
There's a certain naive bliss that is often missing from electronic music. The feelgood innocence found abstractly between the likes of Bran Van 3000, Pizzicato Five, and early 90s stabs at electro pop. That joy is honored hear on the Fol Chen album "The Longer U Wait".
A collection of remixes and reworks, it's not entirely consistent, but the joy of joys on here more than makes up for the few toss-offs. Sufjan Steven's label Asthmatic Kitty has put this out, and I think you can even download the whole thing from their web site.

Immortal Technique - The 3rd World: This is from the "The 3rd World" and I just love that super bass slam on every 4th beat. Political songs are always a contentious topic, but this avoids most of the common pitfalls that make most tracks like this embarrassingly unlistenable a year later.

I can't properly express my joy that the new Antlers album "Hospice" is finally here. It is to 2009 what Okkervil River's Black Sheep Boy was to 2005: An emotional, mature, engrossing work that will dominate melancholy mixtapes for the next decade.
We originally posted up some of The Antlers here back in January, then another in August, and here are two more. The song Shiva is especially brilliant, with it's creepy mysticism of the narrator transforming in to the victim, and them departing, leaving one abandoned. I must have dreamt with that metaphor at least once before because it resonates so damn strongly.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. One of the best albums of the year. A classic.

The Big Pink - Dominos: This is the kind of music that sounds "straight ahead" these days, radio-friendly pop rock but with enough of an edge that it immediately catches your ear.

Azeda Booth - In Red: The delicious little vocals are constantly threatened to be gobbled by forward-charging percussion (both drum kit and electronic), and the swells of melodic repetition. It has the feel of any excited and nervous dream that leaves you a bit exhilarated and sad at the same time. Check back to March, where we previously had some Azeda Booth up in this place. A perfect way to get started!

"My Shit is Perfect" is the 2009 album from Mr. Bob Log the third, but only the 2nd song here is from that album. The first track, Boob Scotch, is from the 2003 album My Shit is Perfect. All of the maturity and refinement of early 90s Ween mixed with R.L. Burnside churning A-for-effort bluesy goodness.
And I think the idea of putting my breast into a scotch is kind of exciting. But that's just me.

Final Fantasy - Blue Imelda: This is from last year's "Spectrum, 14th Century" EP release. 2008 was a quizzical change of gears for Owen Pallett fans, but I'm sticking with him. I of course wanted the strings, but here we find steel drums and horns sounding like they are straight from a Beirut album. Still good stuff, and it only goes to remind us we can never underestimate this man.

Steven R. Smith - Paths In The Bower: I found this album, "The Anchorite", almost by accident, and I had to do an audio double-take because I was just ready to move on. But something snagged me and anchored me inwards, and a beautiful sound-world unfolded. Sitting in the realm of stunning soundtrack composition with the likes of Jonathan Bepler and Max Richter, he mixes up avant soundscapes with ambient textures, all with an epic sense of scale and imagery. Highly recommended, if the preceeding sentence doesn't sound terrifying to you.

blog 2009/08/24 - An ipecac or a smorgasbord. MP3s for your face.
Bibio have been stacking great reviews for their 2009 album Ambivalence Avenue and it's got some next-level shit on it. But it's also a bit of a snoozer. I'll level with you, it's not close to Boards Of Canada in terms of beatsmithing, and not even near Flying Lotus, who barely output a cohesive listen.
Definitely an interesting LP to dig for beatheads, but like Prefuse-73 and Machine Drum, it doesn't hold up as a solidified sonic world and will be remembered for a single or two come 2012. Fire Ant here is the standout for me, with seductive cutups and talkbox distortion.

Cortney Tidwell is representing here with 2 tracks from her 2009 album "Boys". The production here is wonderful, taking a great singer-songwriter aesthetic and filtering through a Morr Music rackmount in one track, and borrowing the St. Vincent mastering studio for others.
The album as a whole didn't melt my world, but I just know that I will be enjoying it on and off for the next 6 months. If these 2 tracks speak to you, definitely track down the album and get rewarded.

Eskmo - Agnus Dei: Eskmo (formerly Eskimo; hurray for Googleable names!) is here to kick our collective asses with the subwoofer. Up in the leagues of subheavy production that is only resided in by the likes of Rusko, Various Productions and DZ, Eskmo has one of the most original dubstep voices out there. (OK, most original next to Various Productions, who are currently top of tops. see below) Eskmo has a tonne of tracks up for purchase at Beatport.com, so go buy everything he's done. And at least the angels will have something awesome to bump when the apocalypse reigns down on us all.

I hadn't heard James Blackshaw before, and his 2007 LP "The Cloud Of Unknowing" just has me floored. Classical 12-string guitar wunderwalls of sounds and depth swirl over you. With a sense of delicateness borrowed from Loren Mazzacane Connors and stamina that would make Terry Riley applaud, this album is a remarkable instrumental work. Highly recommended.
If I had a magic wand that shot out fairy dust and performed non-consensual magical modification on you, the "shooting fairy dust" soundtrack would be James Blackshaw. (the dust would move slowly, k?)

I have always thought the world of Mexican electronic musician Murcof, ever since I first bought his debut LP Martes.
In a smart move, a producer finally hired him for soundtrack work, doing the entire score for Enlightened Blood (La Sangre Iluminada).

Murcof's soundtrack work follows the similar orchestral glitch of the past 7 years, but included here is a special remix included on the soundtrack release that is just divine. Highly recommended: both the soundtrack, and the movie.

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Starsmith Remix ft Ellie Goulding): OK, I know there have been a bajillion Passion Pit remixes on here, but I keep getting surprised. History has shown that most invigorating thing to do for both your fans and your career is to release all of the components of your song and let everyone and anyone remix them. This results in a glut of shitty remixes, but results in a few choice ones too. But woah there lassie, what we have here is the most radical result of that experiment yet: A total vocal reworking of Sleepyhead with the falsetto being replaced with a woman, and the detuned bass chorus being replaced with a man.

Radiohead continues with their online trends, releasing this on their website for pay-what-you-can, so go get a higher quality copy there if you want. Various Production - The World Is Gone ft Cat Power: As I mentioned above, Various Production are at the cream of the production crop. Bred of Skull Disco mutations, Rusko basslines and Funkstorung edges, I have been so amazed by their output in the last year. Top drawer, all the way. Oh wait a sec, let's toss Cat Power in to a song and make you wet your pants. This is as awe-inducing as when Karmacoma was first released.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Everlasting Gobstopper: I am an avid collector of 50s/60s/early 70s electro-acoustic music, and the 1971 release date of this film marks it perfectly for my interests. The sounds of the Everlasting Gobstoppers machine are a delightful concrete wonder, mixing traditional foley work with a Warner Bros 1940s aesthetic. It is joyous complexities like this that we don't perhaps notice as youth, but are super fun to rediscover later on.

I hadn't heard James Blackshaw before, and his 2007 LP "The Cloud Of Unknowing" just has me floored. Classical 12-string guitar wunderwalls of sounds and depth swirl over you. With a sense of delicateness borrowed from Loren Mazzacane Connors and stamina that would make Terry Riley applaud, this album is a remarkable instrumental work. Highly recommended.
If I had a magic wand that shot out fairy dust and performed non-consensual magical modification on you, the "shooting fairy dust" soundtrack would be James Blackshaw. (the dust would move slowly, k?)

I have always thought the world of Mexican electronic musician Murcof, ever since I first bought his debut LP Martes.
In a smart move, a producer finally hired him for soundtrack work, doing the entire score for Enlightened Blood (La Sangre Iluminada).

Passion Pit - Sleepyhead (Starsmith Remix ft Ellie Goulding): OK, I know there have been a bajillion Passion Pit remixes on here, but I keep getting surprised. History has shown that most invigorating thing to do for both your fans and your career is to release all of the components of your song and let everyone and anyone remix them. This results in a glut of shitty remixes, but results in a few choice ones too. But woah there lassie, what we have here is the most radical result of that experiment yet: A total vocal reworking of Sleepyhead with the falsetto being replaced with a woman, and the detuned bass chorus being replaced with a man.

Radiohead continues with their online trends, releasing this on their website for pay-what-you-can, so go get a higher quality copy there if you want. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory - Everlasting Gobstopper: I am an avid collector of 50s/60s/early 70s electro-acoustic music, and the 1971 release date of this film marks it perfectly for my interests. The sounds of the Everlasting Gobstoppers machine are a delightful concrete wonder, mixing traditional foley work with a Warner Bros 1940s aesthetic. It is joyous complexities like this that we don't perhaps notice as youth, but are super fun to rediscover later on.

blog 2009/08/18 - The aching fingers should never be placed in the ears!
Hello! I wanted to get this out sooner, but my life is incredibly busy, so they fall as they may.
I was happy to get a message from Ana Pettinari, whose stirring sone "El ciclo" was featured in the 2009/08/05 edition here. I loved loved loved the song (if you haven't listened to it a million times, do so now!) but didn't understand the words.
She is from Argentina, and of the song she writes a concise explanation: "It talks about some feelings or ideas that come over and over, taking away the calm."
And now, on to the new music...
Arms - Kids Aflame: Arms is intelligently written and delightfully stripped down in it's execution. The core aspects of a good pop song are refined, polished, and then warbled for good measure. No attempts are made to overproduce, just to let the craft speak for itself.

Basement Jaxx - Get Me Off (Elected 2009 Remix): This will get noted as probably the most interesting dubstep remix I have ever heard. It incorporates Jaxx samples from a few places, and weaves them almost like a megamix, but crafting something whole and intriguing. This Elected person is snazzy. I want more.

Copeland - The Grey Man: Sitting in that somewhat vague post-Coldplay space, Copeland occupies a similar space that Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun did in the early 90s: If you have a THIS shaped whole inside you, you will love it dearly. If not, you might just not be able to let yourself fall for emo-tinged crooning.

Crush Buildings - Ghoul Pounds: This one is just beautiful. Intricate percussion comes from a few sources and helps weaves a hypnotic click-track for the reaching and understated vocals that really pull everything together. Is that flute on there, too? Wow and apparently these people are from Ottawa. Top notch.

This is almost a guilty obsession because you just know it will blow-up once it is discovered and be bought up for some cell-phone commercial. Enjoy it while you can!

Mystery Jets - Young Love (Shoes Mix): The twirling synth here is immediately addictive, followed by the sheer youthful lust of the song. But don't be fooled: Gui has always been at the forefront of the electro world, giving us more unique and ground-breaking tracks than any AliveGoo5 approximation could ever muster. Another track of blissout tech.

Harlem Shakes sit on the tip of your tongue. They remind you of so many other great rock bands with a strong pop lean, but you get apprehensive naming similarities. So many things fit, and so many of those so many fits don't fit quite too well. They don't do it justice.
Recommended for fans of Pavement, The National, They Might Be Giants, The Mountain Goats, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. uggh whatever. "Technicolor Health" is the new album. And it's good.

Bell Orchestre really capture your imagination. Limp genres like "post rock" have long been floundering in their own redundancy, but the new LP "As Seen Through Windows" evokes the excitement as when you first heard Dirty Three and Hovercraft back in the 90s.
They also raise the bar by covering Aphex Twin's Bucephalus Bouncing Ball! I double-dare Sunn O))) to cover any of Come To Daddy. Aphex Twin hasn't sounded this good since Dillinger Escape Plan covered
him. Well, or since the 90s.
Recommended for all fans of post-rock and instrumental prog rock.

"So Far Gone" is Drake's new LP and it's pretty chill. I'm pretty picky with hiphop (can you guess?) and so a bunch of it came off as juvenile and unrefined, but there are a few sweetspots.
Obviously Kanye-influenced, but in a good way, he even inserts himself in with Lykke Li. And don't worry, he pulls it off. Well played, sir!

Cardopusher hits us with some darkstep bassy monster movie fun. Mr. Wobble's Nightmare parodies the classic 4 Hero track from about 18 years ago, but cranking up the BPM and squelching out the breaks'n'bass.

Phatcat & DZ - Shadows: Ottawa-based DZ turns in another scorcher. Appropriately following the Mr. Kird do-over above, this track digs back to the early 90s hardcore classic Valley of The Shadows by Origin Unknown and reworks it for the 21st century dubstep heads. Solid.

I found this book at a local library. It was in German, so I didn't really understand it, but was filled with large pages of triangles and warped squares, all overlayed. Hurray for avant-garde geometric scores!
The 10" was insert in the back sleeve of the book and features some wild music. And believe me, I own many many records of 60s/early-70s synth music, and the compositions here are in legion with the wildest. One of the most satisfying releases of all my 60s/70s contemporary electronics.
